You’re fortunate enough to be running in one of Britain’s oldest and best half marathons. Thank you for taking part. On the day itself it is you – the competitors and spectators - who make the ‘show’. So enjoy! ANDREW TAYLOR, RACE DIRECTOR

BUS ADVERTISING IS RIGHT UP MY STREET Paul Marshall, Marketing Manager for Park Furnishers
By using bus advertising as part of our media mix, we can reach a much larger proportion of the population with our advertising messages. This leads to more footfall, more enquiries and consequently more sales. It has enabled us to support our key sales messages and build our brand. Bus advertising put us streets ahead of the competition.
Note: all times are estimated and liable to change. Whilst every effort will be made to ensure races start at the published times, there can sometimes be delays due to circumstances outside our control. Check the race website, venue information boards and commentator’s announcements for up-to-date information

New for 2010 ONE-WAY PEDESTRIAN FLOW To reduce congestion at the venue we will be introducing a new one-way pedestrian system this year. For entry to the Runners Village competitors & spectators will be directed to use the Sports Centre gate via North Parade Road (or the Turnstile entrance via Edward Street). The Riverside gate & Grove Street will be exit only. Diversion signage & stewards will be in place to assist.
numbers enter from the rear of the start area in Henrietta Street via Grove Street (using the rugby club Riverside Gate from the Runners Village).
HALF MARATHON START To reduce congestion at the start of the race runners will again be ‘seeded’ according to the estimated finishing time given at time of entry, with the faster runners starting at the front, and slower runners at the rear. There will be no ‘wave start’ this year
WHITE START Faster competitors with white-banded race numbers enter from the rear of the start area at William Street (using the Lower Gate from the Runners Village). Green and orange-banded runners will not be allowed into the White Start. But white-banded runners can enter through the Green Start if they wish, for instance if they are accompanying green or orange-banded runners to the start.
Study the venue map to see where you need to assemble for the start according on the colour of your race number and the letter printed on the left side. Be ready for the main race start at 11.00am. Race marshals will walk you forward before your start time. Remember –whichever start bay you are in you will receive your own personal ‘chip time’. ORANGE START Slower competitors with orange -banded race
GREEN START Competitors with green-banded race numbers enter from the rear of the start area at Laura Place fountain (using the rugby club Riverside Gate from the Runners Village).
ALL COMPETITORS WILL BE REQUIRED TO SHOW THEIR RACE NUMBERS – including the completed next of kin and medical details form on the back of your race number – before entering the start area. We recommend you complete the form on the back of your race number before travelling to the race.
THE WHITE START WILL BE CLOSED 10 MINUTES BEFORE RACE START. After this time remaining runners will be directed to the Green or Orange starts. PARKING Additional bus services will be provided at the Park & Ride sites this year, plus additional parking at Bath Racecourse - next to Lansdown Park & Ride (weather dependant). But with limited capacity (only 2,000-2,300 spaces for 15,000 entrants plus spectators) the Park & Ride sites will be filled extremely early, probably before 8.30am. Also due to the shear volume of passengers arriving in such a short period of time there will inevitably be queues of maybe 30-45mins for Park & Ride buses both into the city before the race, and returning to the Park & Rides after the race. Additional parking is available in city centre car parks within walking distance of the start & finish – see map & final instructions for details. Please allow plenty of time for parking & queuing and plan ahead by identifying alternative parking in the city centre in case the Park & Rides are full.

Race Information I-PODS & PERSONAL STEREOS ARE BANNED The Bath Half is a 2-lap race & most runners will be overtaken by faster runners & lead vehicles during the race. For your own safety, to make sure you can hear marshals’ safety instructions and the approach of overtaking event vehicles and faster runners from behind, we regret that I-Pods & personal stereos are banned at this event. SPECTATOR VIEWING SPOTS At larger races like the Bath Half Marathon the start and finish and other more accessible viewing spots can become uncomfortably crowded for infants, elderly and infirm. If you are intending to meet competitors or spectators after the race please take time before the start to select suitable viewing and meeting points. See the course map for details. This year we are again advertising a number of family friendly viewing spots at quieter locations around the course adjacent to facilities such as toilets, cafes, play areas and parking (details will be published on our website nearer event time). We’ve also laid on additional entertainment this year to lift competitors’ spirits at some of the quieter locations around the course. And be sure to look out for the new cheering points organised by our race charities and local schools. Access points to the start area will be controlled by event stewards and security staff with instructions to only permit access to runners wearing the correct banded race numbers. Runners without race numbers will be sent back to the Information Desk in the Runners Village IPICO TIMING CHIP Your IPICO chip must be worn on the outside of one of your shoes (not on your wrist or ankle). Loosen your laces, thread the two ties supplied through the laces and the timing chip, and secure tightly so that your chip lies flat on the front of your shoe (as shown). Your IPICO chip will be activated when you cross the mats on the start line, again when you cross the 10k point and finally at the finish line. Please recycle your chip in the bins provided in the goody bag area after finishing the race, marshals will be on hand to assist removal. 10
Race Information THIS IS A NON SMOKING EVENT Smokers are asked to please refrain from smoking near competitors or spectators, either at the venue or on the course. RUBBISH REMOVAL Please also assist us by reducing the amount of rubbish created at the event. Either take your rubbish home with you or segregate and deposit your rubbish in the marked recycling bins provided. Runners are asked to drop their empty water and Lucozade bottles carefully on the kerbside. Please take care when disposing of drinks on the course to avoid injuring other runners or spectators. FITNESS & MEDICAL CARE Please read the medical advice pages in this programme carefully and also take the time to look at the expert advice on health, fitness, training, hydration (drinking & over-drinking), eating and race preparation on the Runners Medical Resource website: www.runnersmedicalresource.com WHEELCHAIR ATHLETES The wheelchair race is restricted to experienced registered disabled wheelchair athletes using racing wheelchairs only (special rules apply). Entrants in the wheelchair race are asked to contact the event office well in advance of the race to discuss arrangements. Wheelchair athletes are also required to register at the Information Desk in the Runners Village before 10.00am and to report to marshals at the start line before 10.20am. REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICY Entrants notifying us of cancellation before 26th December 2009 will have been offered a partial refund of £10 or credit towards a place for next year’s race. No refunds can be offered after26th December, but runners who notify the Bath Half Marathon office of their cancellation and return their race number before race day will be offered a guaranteed entry for next year’s race – at the new discounted online price (note this does not
apply to golden bond runners failing to meet their agreed fundraising target). RACE RULES The race is held under UK Athletics Rules of Competition – Licence Number : 2009-100372 . Entrants are also required to abide by the Race Rules and marshals’ directions which are available on the race website, or by post on request to the event office. ROAD CLOSURES & PARKING Road closures and parking suspensions will operate on the entire course route and on streets adjacent to Great Pulteney Street. Further parking suspensions will operate on designated alternative access routes for ambulances and buses in Oldfield Park, Bathwick, Walcot and Newbridge. All effected areas will be clearly signposted weeks in advance of the race. Vehicles parked on designated streets will be towed away and subject to a fixed penalty notice of * £70 plus removal charge of * £150 (plus storage charge of * £20.00 per day for unclaimed vehicles). Payment of charges & collection of removed vehicles must be made at Hinton Rescue’s pound on Locksbrook Road, Bath BA1 3EL (Tel : 01225 448025). Appeals must be made to Bath & North East Somerset Council. Note * details correct at time of publication PARKING No parking is available at the venue. Competitors and spectators are requested to use the Park & Ride sites which will be operating on race day, but with limited capacity these will be filled extremely early, probably before 8.30am. After 8.30am the Park & Ride sites are likely to be full & competitors arriving later should follow normal road signage to city centre car parks see map overleaf.
PARK & RIDE SERVICES Note: We recommend you time your journey to arrive at the Park & Ride site before 8.30am to allow sufficient time to get to the venue by 10.00am. The last buses from the Park & Ride sites into the City Centre before the roads closed at 10.00am were extremely busy last year. Free changing and baggage storage are located in marquees around the perimeter of the Runners Village, plus the Sweatshop ‘Runners Store’, Lucozade ‘ Performance Zone’, New Balance ‘Speedrun’ track, Heart FM Roadshow, entertainment, food and drinks, toilets and first aid. Listen carefully to commentator’s announcements and allow plenty of time to get to the start. Runners will be called to the start by the commentator 1 hour before the race start. Due to crowd congestion it could take you as long as 30 minutes to get from the Runners Village to your start position in Great Pulteney Street, and you should aim to be in position 30 minutes before race start. INFORMATION DESK The Information Desk in the marquee in front of the Cricket Pavilion in the Runners Village will be open from 8.00am to 3.30pm Tel: 01225 422255.

Race Information RESTRICTED AREAS FOR COMPETITORS ONLY The roadway in Great Pulteney Street and William Street and will be restricted to competitors’ access only. No public access is allowed to the medical unit in the finish area.
BAGGAGE TENT Free supervised kit storage for Half Marathon and Fun Run competitors will be provided in the baggage tent in the Runners Village. Expect this to be very busy during the peak finishing time for the Half Marathon between 1.00pm and 2.00pm.
MEETING POINTS, INJURED RUNNERS, LOST PERSONS & LOST PROPERTY Designated meeting points will be signposted in the centre of the Runners Village, and at the fountain at Laura Place. These are good places to arrange to meet supporters and competitors before and after the race, avoiding some of the more crowded locations - look out for the meeting point banners. Do not rely on mobile phones at the event to make your arrangements – at peak times during larger events mobile networks are often overloaded due to the volume of calls. For information about injured runners, lost persons and lost property contact the Information Desk in the Runners Village (Tel : 01225 422255) or a steward or marshal, and listen carefully for announcements on the public address system.
• Carefully tear off the pre-printed label on the bottom of your race number and attach securely to your bag. • Put a written note of your name, contact details and race number inside your bag to help us identify lost baggage. • Switch off your mobile phone before leaving your bag. • Do not leave it to the last minute to deposit your bag. • Please be patient when you collect your bag after the race.
TOILETS Toilets will be provided for runners’ use in the Runners Village and within the start area, but expect these to be very busy before the start of the race. Separate toilets are provided for spectators in the Runners Village. We also provide toilets at each first aid post (spaced every 2/3rds mile around the course) and at each of the 4 drinks station. There is always a high demand for toilets immediately before the start of the race, so allow plenty of time to queue.
Go the distance with us! Be part of it.
All bags are deposited at owners’ risk, do not place valuable or fragile items within your bag. The race organisers accept no responsibility for loss or damage.

Race Information START Both the Half Marathon and the Fun Run start under the gantry in Great Pulteney Street. Competitors should allow at least 30 minutes to get from the Runners Village to the start area. The Orange, Green and White Start zones will be divided into separate marked pens according to predicted finish times. Runners are asked to arrange themselves in the correct pen within their designated Orange, Green or White Start zone. Please be realistic and honest about your predicted finish time and start in the correct start pen. Starting too far forward at the beginning of the race is dangerous and will both annoy and impede faster runners behind you as they struggle to overtake in the first few miles. Wherever you start - the IPICO timing chip on your race number will record your own personal start and finish time. BATH HALF FAMILY FUN RUN In aid of the Royal United Hospital Forever Friends ‘Space to Grow’ Appeal
Entrants in the Bath Half Family Fun Run should assemble at the end of Edward Street next to the barriers before 11.00am. You will be able to watch the Half Marathon start from here before being walked to the Fun Run start by marshals. Children under the age of 11 years participating in the Fun Run must be accompanied by a responsible paying adult. Parents of unaccompanied older children must ensure their children are accompanied to the start area and met at the finish line. SPECTATORS Bath is a friendly City, priding itself on providing a warm welcome for visitors since Roman times. As a major tourist destination with easy traffic links, extensive shopping and restaurant facilities, the Bath Half is well regarded as a family friendly race, and for its fantastic crowd support from local residents and visitors alike. We welcome all spectators, please give every runner your warm support – it really makes a difference. The most 16
Race Information popular places to watch the race are the start/ finish in Great Pulteney Street and more accessible points on the course, particularly at Churchill Bridge, Green Park, Park Lane and Queen Square. To get a good viewpoint at these locations you will need to arrive 45 mins to 1 hour before race start, and at peak times the pavements may become too crowded for infants, elderly or the infirm. As an alternative we can recommend a number of family friendly viewing spots at quieter locations around the course (for instance the Royal Victoria Park playground) adjacent to facilities such as toilets, cafes, play areas for children and parking. For further details please check out the race website and course & venue maps. In addition a number of churches on the course route will also be staying open during the race to offer refreshment, shelter or a meeting point for spectators and runners – and to support their own runners. Facilities on offer vary with each church – some include play areas for children, tea, coffee and toilets. The race venue, city centre and central car parks will be very crowded on race day, so allow extra time for your journey, to get into and out of the Runners Village, for the toilets and to get a good viewing point. For safety’s sake, spectators must follow marshals’ instructions in crossing the road. Do not encroach onto the carriageway or obstruct either the runners, race officials or the medical team. Please do not smoke near runners or other spectators. Please respect local residents and take your own rubbish home with you or use the bins provided! The toilets in the Runners Village, at first aid posts and drinks stations are designated for runners’ use. Separate toilets are provided for spectators in the Runners Village, but expect these to be busy, particularly before the start of the race. If you are accompanying competitors we suggest that you agree a meeting place and time in advance, such as the designated places in the Runners Village and Laura Place, and do not depend on mobile phone coverage immediately after the race, as the network may be overloaded. COURSE ROUTE AND ROAD CLOSURES The course route will be closed to traffic - except for emergency and event vehicles - from 10.00am,
and will be progressively re-opened after 1.30pm. Sections of the half marathon route are run in the opposite direction to normal traffic flow where runners will encounter traffic islands, raised kerbs and other obstructions which could cause a tripping hazard. Please look out for marshals’ warnings and take extra care when negotiating these obstructions. THE BATH HALF IS A 2-LAP RACE Runners finishing in over 2½ hours will probably be lapped by the lead runners on the Upper Bristol Road – just after your second mile. The majority of runners finishing in around 2 hours will probably be lapped by the leaders halfway round your first lap at around 4-5 miles at the far end of the course at Twerton Fork. For safety sake - to avoid impeding faster runners coming up behind you – first lap runners will be directed by marshals and safety vehicles to move into the inside (left hand) lane (and to stay in the inside lane). COMPETITORS MUST BE CAPABLE OF FINISHING THE HALF MARATHON COURSE WITHIN 3 HOURS. To minimise inconvenience to motorists and residents, half marathon runners finishing in more than 2hrs 45 mins will be directed by marshals to run sections of the course on the pavement obeying normal highways rules when the effected section of road is re-opened to normal traffic. A minibus shuttle service will be provided to transport half marathon runners suffering from minor injuries or exhaustion back to the secondary first aid post in the Runners Village, just inside the Sports Centre gate The Bath Half takes place within the centre of a major city, cutting across access routes to a regional hospital at Bath Royal United Hospital. We need to maintain access for emergency services and event vehicles along the whole of the half marathon route throughout the race. All runners must be prepared to give way, swap lanes (and stop running if necessary) for ambulance, police, fire brigade and event vehicles.
DRINKS STATIONS & TOILETS Highland Spring bottled water & Lucozade Sport will be provided on the left hand kerb at the following locations on the half marathon course: Highland Spring bottled water 2 miles, 5 miles, 8 miles, 10 1/2 miles, 12 1/2 miles Lucozade Sport (orange flavour) 4 1/2 miles, 10 miles, 12 1/2 miles Drinks stations on the right hand side are for faster second lap runners only. Highland Spring bottled water and Lucozade Sport will be given to you in the goody bag area immediately after you finish the race. There will also be an unlimited supply of cupped tap water before and after the race in the Runners Village next to the Information Desk. During the half marathon look out for the advance warning signs on lamp posts as you approach each drinks station, get yourself on the inside (left hand) lane well in advance, if the first or second tables at a station are crowded (which is highly likely), move straight on to the third or fourth table. Don’t be selfish, please don’t waste drinks which might be needed by slower runners behind you, and be sure to dispose of your drink safely in the designated bin areas on the kerbside just after the drinks stations or in the kerb. If you don’t intend to take drinks please move into the middle of the carriageway well clear of the drinks station to avoid accidents. We do not provide sponges. Toilets will be provided at all half marathon drinks stations, and at every first aid post. Any competitor found urinating anywhere other than in an official toilet will be disqualified. ENTERTAINMENT AND CHEERING POINTS In addition to the ever-popular Samba Sulis drummers in Green Park, we are planning additional entertainment to lift your spirits at some of the quieter locations on the half marathon
course ! A number of our race charities and local schools will also be organising cheering points around the course to support runners. PRE AND POST MASSAGE A team of local volunteer sports masseurs at the Runners Village will be offering competitors pre and post-race massages organised by the Fire Services Charity. See the event website for more details. MILE MARKERS The exact measured point of each mile mark will be spray-painted on the roadway, but these marks can be difficult to see if you are running in a large group. Signs will also be fixed on the nearest lamp post – but these can be several metres away from the mile mark itself. There will also be digital clocks displaying the ‘gun’ time on the start/finish gantry, at the 10K point and on the lead car. 10K TIMING POINT All runners must pass under the 10K timing point on your first lap, in order to record an official time. On the second lap runners should run wide (to the right) of the timing point and stay in the right-hand lane past Churchill Bridge up to the finish, unless otherwise directed by marshals.
finish area is for medical casualties only. If you feel sick or unwell at the finish move to the side of the finish area and ask for assistance from the marshals and medical team who are on hand and trained to help you. Otherwise please leave the finish area immediately after finishing the race, and do not linger in the finish area or goody bag area. Marshals have authority to disqualify any runner failing to move on when asked. Runners will not be allowed to re-enter the finish area after collecting their goody bag – and will exit via the Lower Gate into the Runners Village. We recommend that you pre-arrange to meet supporters and fellow competitors at one of the designated meeting points in the Runners Village or in Laura Place. The Fun Run will also finish under the main gantry in Great Pulteney Street. GOODY BAGS Goody bags will be handed to half marathon and fun run finishers in the Runners Village just after the finish area. In addition to the free medal and an event t-shirt given to half marathon finishers you can purchase official half marathon tech T-shirts with the latest wicking technology and other race merchandise on the day, or through the race website – subject to availability.
HALF MARATHON AND FUN RUN FINISH The digital clock on the finish gantry will show your provisional ‘gun’ finishing time. The IPICO timing chip on your shoe will automatically record your start and finish time as you pass over the timing mats on the start line, plus your intermediate time at the 10K point. The finish line in the Bath Half is busier than the landing runway in an international airport, with over 150 runners crossing the line every minute at peak time! Tips for Race Day TRAINING SUPPORT For information on half marathon training and preparation- see the race website (www.bathhalf.co.uk). DIGITAL MAPPING TOOL, BLOGS AND COMMUNITY SITES See the event website for links to our digital training mapping tool, blogs and community sites to upload and share your own Bath Half photos and videos. TOP TIPS FOR RACE DAY Be prepared Ensure your kit and race number are ready, and your journey planned in advance. Pack a drink and snack in your bag for after the race. Don’t forget to fill in the contact and medical details on the back of your race number. Leave yourself plenty of time to get to the venue, to warm up, leave your kit at the baggage tent, use the toilet and get to the start area. Agree in advance where and when you will meet supporters and fellow competitors. Stay warm and calm at the start A bit of walking or a few minutes ‘light jogging’ is plenty of warm-up for most runners – save your energy for later. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get to the start, listen out for the commentator’s announcements. But when you’ve deposited your warm clothes at the baggage tent 1hr before the start, you’ll still need to stop your muscles getting cold, so bring along an old t-shirt or sweatshirt (or even a bin liner with arm and head holes) which you can wear on your way up to the start and peel off after the aerobics warm up, just before the gun goes off – it will go to a good cause as we recycle discarded clothing for charity. Please take care when discarding your unwanted clothing and use the designated drop off areas by the side of your start pen. A few years ago one of our competitors sustained a nasty injury getting tangled up with a thoughtlessly discarded bin liner.

Medical Advice Start slowly Be realistic about your estimated finish time and start in the correct start pen. Starting too far forward at the beginning of the race will impede and annoy faster runners behind you as they try to overtake, this can also be dangerous as slower runners often get tripped up and even trampled. Most runners go off far too fast at the start, especially at Bath where the first mile is downhill – keep something in reserve for the last mile back up the hill! Treat the busy roads at the start as a warm-up, rather than wasting energy trying to dodge other runners. It is best to conserve energy for the later stages of the race by running the first half slower than the second half (known as ‘negative splits’). You will suffer in the latter stages of the race if you have been forced along at a faster pace than you are used to in the early miles. Run an even pace Use the free pacing band for your own estimated finish time obtainable from the Lucozade ‘Performance Zone’ in the Runners Village. This will give you your own split times for each mile– and adjust your pace as you pass each mile marker. Drink and eat little and often Want to know the secret to not fading fast near the end ? Ensure you start the race hydrated and top up your fluid and energy levels regularly. Read the race doctor’s Medical Advice carefully and check your urine colour – it may sound gross but it really works! There are drinks stations every few miles on the course, so use them when you feel thirsty, particularly the early ones. Make sure you have practised running with Lucozade Sport beforehand. Take care not to gulp large amounts of water, as drinking too much water can be dangerous. Adjust the amount of water you drink according to the weather conditions on the day. Do not attempt a sprint finish However tempting this might seem at the time, do not attempt a sprint finish unless you are an seasoned athlete with experience of regular and structured speed and interval sessions.
Be sensible Don’t run if you feel unwell, or have been unwell in the four weeks prior to the race. Don’t run if you haven’t trained properly and haven’t run 8 miles comfortably in the weeks leading up to the race. Come back again next year - there are plenty of other races out there in the meantime.
RUNNERS’ MEDICAL RESOURCE The Bath Half has teamed up with the race directors and race doctors from the largest races in the UK (including the London Marathon and Great North Run) to set up the most authoritative guide for down to earth advice on health, fitness, training, hydration (drinking), eating and preparation for endurance races. Check out the website at www.runnersmedicalresource.com before race day. ADVICE FROM THE RACE MEDICAL DIRECTOR MEDICAL HISTORY If you have a medical problem which makes it risky for you to run a half marathon (13.1 miles) discuss these with your general practitioner before you start any new training programme – particularly if you have a family history of heart disease or sudden death, if you have had any symptoms of heart disease, such as chest pain or discomfort on exertion, sudden shortage of breath or rapid palpitations. This advice supplements anything your GP says, and the advice on the Runners’ Medical Resource website. Any runner with an existing medical problem which might require special attention, such as epilepsy, diabetes or a history of heart problems, is required to forward details of their condition and their GP’s contact details in writing to the Race Medical Director (contact details below), who may wish to discuss your condition in confidence with your GP. Providing the Race Medical Director is satisfied that your GP’s consent has been obtained, you will be required to mark a large cross in black felt tip on the front of your race number, in addition to details of your condition and any current medication on the rear. Running in someone else’s race number can have serious consequences for the identification and treatment of a casualty in the event of a medical emergency. FIT TO RUN? If you haven’t followed a properly structured training programme and cannot comfortably
manage an 8-mile continuous training run with a month to go before the race, you will not manage the half marathon in safety and are unlikely to enjoy it. Please do not run on this occasion, keep training and try again next year. STILL FIT TO RUN? Please do not run the Bath Half if you feel unwell or have recently been unwell, even if you are raising money for charity. Most medical emergencies during races occur in people who have been unwell but do not wish to miss the event. If you feel feverish, have been vomiting, have had severe diarrhoea or any chest pains, or otherwise felt unwell in the last 4 weeks before the race, then it is unfair to you, your family, your sponsoring charity and the race support staff to risk serious illness by becoming a medical emergency. You are unlikely to do yourself justice, and there are plenty of other races that you could run in once you have recovered. RUN WITHIN YOUR LIMITATIONS & AT AN EVEN PACE The excitement of competing in a major event such as the Bath Half Marathon often tempts inexperienced runners to go off far too fast at the start, wasting valuable energy needed in the later stages. So make sure you start in the correct start pen. Also please do not sprint as you approach the finish of the race – this additional stress can be very dangerous – unless you are an experienced athlete. FLUIDS You must replace fluids lost in sweat, otherwise your body becomes dehydrated and less efficient. On the other hand, drinking too much can be very dangerous and lead to hyponatraemia (water intoxication), fits and even death. Make sure you are not-dehydrated before the start of the race. AVOID ALCOHOL THE NIGHT BEFORE THE RACE. Dehydration is easy to detect, you should always drink enough water to keep your urine pale straw colour and abundant.
START THE RACE WELL HYDRATED by drinking up to 250ml (half a pint) of water or sports drink half hour before the start. If you drink too much water before the start you will waste time in the toilet queue. There will be frequent drinks stations around the course, but don’t feel obliged to drink at each one. ONLY DRINK WHEN YOU FEEL THIRSTY. Drink little and often, and do not gulp large volumes of fluids before, during or after the race. Don’t waste water at drinks stations by taking extra bottles to pour over your head, as this deprives slower runners behind you. Many runners use Lucozade Sport as part of their training regime and during a race to provide additional energy and aid recovery. But DON’T TRY ANYTHING NEW ON RACE DAY that you haven’t already tested in your normal training. Everybody has different fluid requirements, some people sweat more than others and some absorb fluids quicker. You will also need less fluid on a cold day than on a hot day. During your pre-race training learn how much water your body needs, see how this varies with different weather conditions (and if you are wearing a heavy costume), get used to drinking and carrying fluids on the run, and check your urine colour on a regular basis. On a cool day most runners (aiming to complete the Bath Half marathon in more than 90 mins) should not need to drink more than 500 ml (one pint) of fluid per hour. After finishing DO NOT DRINK LARGE AMOUNTS OF WATER. Keep on drinking little and often, spacing out your drinks and have something to eat including some salty food to ensure you don’t get hyponatraemia. Replacing fluids lost during a half marathon will be a gradual process taking 24-48 hours.

Medical Advice DIET Eat what suits YOU. Large doses of supplementary vitamins and minerals (such as iron) are not essential and produce no benefit if you are on a good mixed diet, but additional vitamin C in small doses is reasonable when fresh fruit and vegetables are in short supply. Training helps you to sustain a high level of muscle glycogen if you eat a lot of carbohydrate. If you can, eat within 2 hours of your long runs – this helps replace the glycogen. Before you run the Bath Half, decrease your intake of protein (meat) and increase your intake of carbohydrate (pasta, bread, potatoes, cereals, rice and sweet things), especially in the last 3 days when you should be reducing your mileage and resting. Unless you reduce the protein you will not eat enough carbohydrates. Carbohydrate (glycogen) depletion and then loading does not help all runners and can make your muscles feel very heavy. ON THE DAY All runners must fill in the contact and medical details on the form on the back of their race number, to assist identification in case of a medical emergency – this will be checked by marshals before allowing you into the start area. Make sure your friends or relatives know your race number and likely finishing time. If you drop out of the race please notify the nearest first aid point, so that supporters waiting for you at the finish can be informed.
feel unwell when you finish move to the side of the finish area and ask for assistance from the marshals and medical team who are on hand and trained to help you. Otherwise don’t stand about getting cold, keep moving, reclaim your bag and change into dry clothes as soon as you can. Do not obstruct other runners or officials in the finish area. Don’t trust your clothing to someone you don’t know – use the free baggage tent. If you feel unwell after you have left the finish area ask for assistance from the marshals and medical team and go to the secondary first aid unit on the far side of the Runners Village, next to the Sports Centre gate. Keep on drinking little and often after the race, and have something to eat as soon as you can, including some salty food to avoid hyponatraemia. Some runners feel faint more than half an hour after finishing the race and this is often because they have taken insufficient fluid and food after the finish. Finishing your race at a ‘steady’ pace (rather than a sprint finish), going for a gentle ‘warm down’ jog in the Runners Village after you have recovered, or booking a post-race massage, will help reduce stiffness in the days after the race.
Wear appropriate clothes for the weather. On a cold wet day you can become very cold if you have to slow down or walk. A hat and gloves help prevent heat loss and are easily carried. In a hot day wear loose mesh clothing and start slowly. Carefully monitor your fluid intake (see previous section on FLUIDS), this will help you feel better later in the race and may prevent cramp which is most common in runners who have not trained sufficiently or are dehydrated. Follow the marshals’ and medical team’s instructions.
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE Train sensibly, follow a properly structured training programme, such as those on the race website, don’t run if you feel unwell on the day or in the 4 weeks before the race, and run at an even pace within your limitations. By observing this simple advice the vast majority of competitors will not require any medical assistance on the day. First Aid posts are located every half-mile around the course. These are supplemented by mobile teams of professional ambulance service paramedics, NHS doctors and nurses on the course and at the primary medical unit in the finish area, all linked by radio communications to our medical control. There is also a further secondary first aid tent for minor injuries on the far side of the Runners Village, next to the Sports Centre gate.
AT THE FINISH Do not attempt a sprint finish unless you are a seasoned athlete with experience of regular and structured speed and interval sessions. If you

A minibus shuttle service will be provided to transport exhausted runners or runners with minor injuries from the course directly back to the secondary first aid post in the Runners Village. If you do drop out of the race and decide to make your own way back to the finish area please assist us by reporting your name and race number to the nearest first aid post, so the commentator can inform your relatives waiting at the finish. All runners must be prepared to give way and stop (if necessary) for emergency service and event vehicles. Runners are also required to report any casualties to the nearest first aid post or race marshal. Runners failing to obey marshals or medical team directions will be disqualified. TREATMENT OF CASUALTIES Most casualties will be treated on site by the event medical team. Casualties in the finish area and more serious cases transported by ambulance from the course will be treated in the primary medical unit in the finish area. Runners collected from the course suffering from exhaustion and more minor injuries will be transported by minibus to the secondary first aid tent on the far side of the Runners Village, next to the Sports Centre gate. In rare and serious cases patients will be transported by ambulance to the Accident and Emergency Department at Bath Royal United Hospital. For information on injured runners contact the Information Desk in the Runners Village (Tel : 01225 422255) or an event marshal and listen to announcements on the public address system. Please note that event staff are bound by NHS of patient confidentiality. Information on patient treatment can only be given to next of kin and with the consent of the patient. No public access is allowed to any of the First Aid or medical treatment facilities. Enjoy your running. Keep this advice sheet and refer to it before the day. Running High are pleased to support the Golden Bond Charities listed below, and wish their runners the best of luck in their fundraising. It is not too late to choose a charity to fundraise for, and make a difference.
Charity Fundraising CHARITY FUNDRAISING Charity fundraising has been a major focus for the Bath Half Marathon with over £7 million pounds raised since the introduction of our Golden Bond scheme in 2000. Our priority is to ensure maximum benefit from the places reserved for the official race charities whilst achieving increases in fundraising year on year as the event expands. Last year alone an amazing £1.3 million was raised for charity, this was a fantastic achievement and we thank all of the runners, their families, friends and work colleagues who raised money for charity and made 2009 our best fundraising year ever. This year we hope to break the 2009 figure and work towards the new goal of raising £1.5 million for charities and voluntary groups in a single year. GOLDEN BOND CHARITIES 15% of the 15,000 places have been allocated to Dorothy House Hospice Care our Official Lead Charity and our other 40 Golden Bond charities. Each Golden Bond runner has pledged to raise a target amount for their chosen charity in return for their reserved place and being part of their charity’s team. The Bath Half has worked closely with Dorothy House for the last ten years since they were one of our first race charitiesin 2000. We hope that independent (own place) runners

If not, why not? There are a thousand good reasons to raise money for those who are unlucky enough to need your help. Please raise money for Dorothy House Hospice Care or one of our other race charities and get your friends, family and work colleagues to sponsor you round the 13.2 miles. Every little bit helps, and each step you take will raise money for a worthwhile cause!

VIRGIN MONEY GIVING
This year we’ve teamed up with the new not-forprofit fundraising website Virgin Money Giving. This fantastic new website allows runners to create their own personalised fundraising page to receive on-line donations from friends, family and work colleagues direct to the charity or charities of their own choice. They even reclaim the gift aid from the government on the charity’s behalf. For every £10.00 donated your chosen charity receives £12.46.
