Nicola Gunn CONCEPT, TEXT, DIRECTION & PERFORMANCE

Nicola Gunn is an award-winning writer, director, performer and designer. She combines text, choreography and visual art to make contemporary performance work that responds to a self-generated impulse to tell a story or explore a form. She has received critical acclaim for a genre of sophisticated performance, has toured to New Zealand, North America, Europe and throughout Australia, and has collaborated with local and international artists. Most recently she created Mermermer with choreographer Jo Lloyd for Chunky Move; The Interpreters for Site is Set at Alliance Francaise performed in French, English, Auslan and Bunwurrong; and published her first comic book with Michael Fikaris, Instruction Manual for Lonely Mountains. Nicola was artist in residence with Kaldor Public Art Projects under the mentorship of Marina Abramovic in 2015; and has received commissions from MTC, Malthouse Theatre, Chunky Move, Field Theory and Performing Lines/Mobile States. Nicola is the recipient of an Australia Council for the Arts Creative Australia Fellowship, a Churchill Fellowship and a 3-month Paris CitĂŠ Residency. She holds a Master of Arts (Art in Public Space) from RMIT.
Jo Lloyd CHOREOGRAPHER Jo Lloyd is a Melbourne based choreographer who uses movement as a social encounter, revealing behaviour over particular durations and circumstances. A graduate of VCA, she has presented internationally in Japan, New York, Hong Kong, and nationally in Dance Massive, the Biennale of Sydney, Dark MOFO and Next Wave. Recent projects include; Confusion for Three, (Arts House), All Our Dreams Come True with Deanne Butterworth (BUS Projects) and Mermermer with Nicola Gunn (Chunky Move/ Next Move). She has performed in works by Chunky Move (Gideon Obarzanek), Shelley Lasica, Shian Law, Sandra Parker, Prue Lang and Ros Warby. Other works include curating 24 HOURS (Dancehouse), choreography for Ranters Theatre, Back to Back Theatre and visual artist David Rosetzky; assisting Alicia Frankovich (ACCA, Melbourne Festival); and a durational performance with Nicola Gunn for Melbourne NOW (NGV International & Gertrude Contemporary), working with visual artist Stephen Bram. Jo has received several Green Room and Australian Dance Award nominations, two Asialink Performing Arts Residencies and the Dancehouse Residency. In 2016 Jo was the Resident Director of Lucy Guerin Inc.

Kelly Ryall SOUND COMPOSITION & DESIGN Kelly is an award-winning composer, musician and sound designer for theatre, film and dance. He is recognised nationally for creating immersive and multi-layered musical landscapes. He is a deeply collaborative artist, working alongside Nicola Gunn, Adena Jacobs, Angus Cerini, Anne-Louise Sarks, Matthew Lutton and Susie Dee, amongst others. He has worked for Australia’s major performing arts companies, including MTC, Malthouse Theatre, STC, PTC, Bell Shakespeare, Belvoir, Force Majeure, KAGE and Griffin. He has established a music driven theatre/performance practice, where score as opposed to script is the driver behind a work. Recent works include, Edward II (Malthouse Theatre), Animal (Influx), Double Indemnity (MTC), The Bacchae (Fraught Outfit), Title and Deed (Belvoir) and Boys Will Be Boys (STC). Works in progress include Against the Tide, an interactive artwork for Sydney Festival 2018 and You Animal, You (Force Majeure). He has been awarded three Green Room awards and a professional development award from Melbourne Festival.

Martyn Coutts AV DESIGN
Niklas Pajanti has designed for a diverse range of leading Australian and international companies including: MTC, Chunky Move, Dancenorth, Ilbijerri Theatre, Victorian Opera, STC, Belvoir Theatre, The Eleventh Hour, Brink Productions, Malthouse Theatre, ACMI, Melbourne Festival, Adelaide Arts Festival, Commonwealth Games 2006 and MICF. His lighting design for Spectra by Dancenorth toured to OzAsia Festival in 2015, Yokohama Japan in 2016 and Sydney Festival in 2017. His work on The Wild Duck for Belvoir toured from 2011-2016 to the Vienna Festival, Holland Festival and The Barbican in London. He lit MTC’s production of Rupert, which toured to Theatre Royal Sydney and The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. in 2014. Niklas was lighting designer on Belvoir’s Angels in America, which won the Helpmann Award for Best Play in 2013. Awards include two Victorian Green Room Awards for best lighting design, an Age Critics Award and an ACT Green Room Award for outstanding production of Brink’s When the Rain Stops Falling. In 2009 and 2010 he was nominated for a Sydney Theatre Award, and in 2008 he was nominated for a Helpmann Award, for best lighting design.
Martyn Coutts is a performance maker, dramaturg, video artist and arts leader. His work focuses on the relationship between the live and the mediated body. Key work, I Think I Can (with Sam Routledge) has been presented across Australia, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Canada, the UK and the US. In 2017, it will be presented in China and at the Royal Shakespeare Company UK. Martyn is a founding member of art collective Field Theory, who created major works in Sydney, Melbourne and Christchurch dealing with community, public space and discursive practice. He has co-directed large-scale community works with Ian Pidd in Hobart, Queenstown, Melbourne and Brisbane. From 2011 to 2015 he was an Associate Artist at interdisciplinary company Aphids, programming and creating works including the national tour of Thrashing Without Looking. In 2014 he became a member of the Artistic Directorate of The Unconformity in Queenstown, Tasmania. He has been dramaturg and video artist for critically acclaimed dance and performance works across Australia and presented at major festivals in all capital cities. Martyn lectures in video for performance at the VCA in Melbourne.

Shio Otani COSTUME DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION A self-confessed crafter, Shio is interested in all things handmade and works with theatre, dance, jewellery design and textiles. Using an in-depth understanding of dance and movement, she designs garments that are visually cohesive and create meaning within works. Her designs often combine her love of craft techniques such as knitting, crochet and patchwork. Shio has designed costumes for award winning companies Back to Back Theatre (Super Discount; Ganesh vs the Third Reich; Food Court; Small Metal Object; Soft), Lucy Guerin Inc. (Weather; Microclimate), Chunky Move (247 Days), and for artists Stephanie Lake (Aorta), Jo Lloyd (Public Unpublic; High Maintenance; Hospitals and Airports), Antony Hamilton (Forces X Antony Hamilton), David Rosetzky (Gaps; Untouchable; Hothouse; Custom Made; Summer Blend), Lee Serle (Activate, P.O.V.; Framed Moments), Ash Keating (Continuum), and most recently Jo Lloyd and Nicola Gunn (Mermermer). Shio graduated from VCA with BA in Dance and studied Fashion at Box Hill Institute of TAFE. She has also graduated from Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE with Advanced Diploma in Jewellery Design.

Jon Haynes is a performer, writer and director. He studied Drama at Sheffield University, a postgraduate acting course at The Poor School and completed a PHD at The University of Kent. Jon co-founded the multi award-winning Ridiculusmus in 1992, since which time he has collaborated with CoArtistic Director David Woods to jointly devise, write and perform in shows including: Tough Time, Nice Time; Ideas Men; Say Nothing; YES YES YES; The Exhibitionists; The Third Policeman; Three Men in a Boat; At Swim Two-Birds; Paranoid Household; How To Be Funny; Total Football; The World Mouse Plague; The Eradication of Schizophrenia in Western Lapland and Give Me Your Love.
Gwen Holmberg Gilchrist PRODUCTION MANAGER & LIGHTING OPERATOR Gwen is a Melbourne based lighting designer and production manager. In 2006 she formed theatre company Night Train Productions with Humphrey Bower, designing Kreutzer Sonata (2007) Raising the Dead (2007) and Skin (2009), before the company relocated to Perth. She has collaborated closely with Nicola Gunn since 2007, founding company Sans Hotel in 2009 as her design collaborator and production manager. Sans Hotel credits include At the Sans Hotel (2010), HELLO My Name Is (2012), In Spite Of Myself (Melbourne Festival 2013), Green Screen (NEON 2014) and A Social Service (2015). Additional lighting credits include In the Dark: Deborah Hay Solo Project (Carlee Mellow 2010), and Ulrike Meinhoff Sings (Sapidah Kahn & Turtle Lab 2011). She has received multiple Green Room nominations for lighting and production. Gwen has also held the position of Venue Manager at various theatres in Melbourne between 2009 - 2016, including Dancehouse, Fortyfive Downstairs and Theatre Works. She is also an AV technician at ACMI, Federation Square.
