DIRECTOR’S NOTE After the totally unexpected success of our first show, Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, we were given some very wise advice from a dear friend, “don’t throw the baby out with the bath water”. She was suggesting we keep all the elements of our debut show that made it so popular with audiences around the world - the live piano score, the dark humour, heightened style of acting, and most importantly the interplay between live actor and animation. The following few months were spent wading around in the quagmire of bad ideas, in an attempt to take 1927 in an entirely different direction, the pressure of creating our second show weighing heavy. When we put some work in front of an audience, things became a little clearer. They made it quite apparent that what they wanted was not an entirely different show, but everything we established in our debut show.
THE YEAR 1927.... THE PARADISE PARAKEET BECAME EXTINCT.
Its taken us a while to take our wise friend’s advice on board, but in doing so we have created a charming, creepy and otherworldly little show that feels like a graphic novel burst in to life. The characters are original and sympathetic, the environment is utterly absorbing, and the animated cockroaches are truly spellbinding! Most importantly we’ve made a unique 1927 world, where anything can happen… SUZANNE ANDRADE
SUZANNE ANDRADE
ESME APPLETON
SUZANNE ANDRADE PERFORMER, WRITER & DIRECTOR
Suzanne Andrade was educated at Bretton Hall where she attained a degree in Theatre Performance, and later an M.A. in French Theatre from Manchester Metropolitan University. Upon graduating Suzanne entered and won several small scale stand-up comedy competitions before moving to London and establishing herself as a performance poet. Suzanne began working with Paul Barritt to develop several small scale shows involving her poetry and his projections eventually performing as part of a literary cabaret in the 2006 Edinburgh Fringe. Since forming 1927 she has been responsible for writing and directing Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Suzanne is also a regular contributor and performer on the spoken word circuit, frequently performing with Apples & Snakes and Spoken Ink. If Miss Andrade were an animal she would be a goat.
ESME APPLETON PERFORMER & C0-COSTUME DESIGNER
Esme was educated at Bretton Hall where she attained a degree in Theatre Performance. She also has an M.A. in Performance from the Central School of Speech and Drama and has trained at the Mxat School of Theatre in Moscow. Since graduating, Esme has performed in numerous short films and also alongside the magician John Vanderput. A long time collaborator with Suzanne Andrade, Esme performed at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and also in several other shows before 1927 were officially formed. Since joining 1927 she has helped to develop Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and is currently developing new work for 1927. If Miss Appleton were an animal she would be a red squirrel.
PAUL BARRITT
LILLIAN HENLEY
PAUL BARRITt FILM, ANIMATION & DESIGN
Paul was educated at Middlesex University where he studied Philosophy and then Illustration. Before forming 1927, Paul worked as a freelance illustrator and animator. Paul has exhibited his artwork in various galleries and has been published as part of the Comic Book Project. Paul has worked with Suzanne on various projects, including a show that was taken to the 2006 Edinburgh Fringe as a part of a literary cabaret and has also made several stand alone films based upon Suzanne’s writing. Since forming 1927, for which he has made all the animations and films, Paul has helped create Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea. Paul is currently a Lecturer in Animation and Illustration at Middlesex University. If Master Barritt were an animal he would be a dog.
LILLIAN HENLEY PERFORMER & COMPOSER
Lillian studied at the Northumbria Live Theatre Academy in Newcastle upon Tyne, where she attained a Masters degree in Theatre and Performance Practice. Lillian has been touring with a variety of theatre companies since graduating, including work with the Live Theatre and numerous shows with the Globe Theatre Players. Lillian is currently composing two original piano scores for two rarely screened Laurel and Hardy silent film shorts. She also writes and performs her own songs and is working on an original album. She can sometimes be found playing original ragtime piano in secluded pubs and cafes across London. Since joining 1927 Lillian has been working both as musician, composer and actress. She has written all of the music for Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and has played an integral role in the development of the show. If Miss Henley were an animal she would be a deer.
Who the devil are 1927? 1927 was founded in London by writer, performer and director Miss Suzanne Andrade and animator, filmmaker and designer Master Paul Barritt in 2005. The pianist and performer Miss Lillian Henley joined 1927 in 2006, along with performer and costume maker Miss Esme Appleton. 1927 are a theatre company that specialise in combining performance and live music with animation and film. Storytelling is at the core of their practise. Spoken word, film and song are combined within their work as a means of exploring innovative ways of telling stories. 1927 reinvent old idioms, silent film, music hall song, fairy tales and cabaret to tell stories that are concerned with contemporary issues for a modern audience. The company has developed an approach to combining the mediums of film, performance and music to great effect, both technically and conceptually; pushing the forms worked in to new and exciting places. Using up-to-date technology, 1927 mix advanced “multi shmulti media” practice with performance, with performers on stage interacting with layers of films and animations to create unique multi-disciplined magical filmic theatre. 1927 cut their teeth on the London cabaret scene. They performed extracts of their first show in cabaret venues, spoken word nights and comedy clubs. They also supported some major cabaret acts and bands, including The Dresden Dolls at the Roundhouse. In 2007 their debut show Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea took the Edinburgh Fringe Festival by storm. They won five awards and their show was a complete sell out! They were then booked for world tours in 2008, 2009 and 2010. 1927 are delighted to return to Malthouse Theatre to treat you to their sparkling new show The Animals and Children Took to the Streets.
