A note from the DIRECTOR

At this point we began to think about making a show that expressed how we were experiencing ourselves now, about how we wanted to live, about change and the desire for it and the role fantasy played in all this and ultimately about brushing up against a sense of mortality. In his book Depression and the Body, the psychotherapist Alexander Lowen links our quality of life with our ability to negotiate the collapse of the dreams that occur throughout our lives. He defines ‘dreams’ as not only things we desire for ourselves, but also those aspects of life that we never imagine ending until they do, such as relationships, health, friendships, death of friends and family, and our personal shifts in beliefs and attitudes that we have been confronted by and may not have expected. Come Away with Me to the End of the World is a quietly personal meditation of some of these things.

——> pg 3

——> pg 2

Come Away with Me to the End of the World grew out of a series of catch-ups between company members over a number of years. There was no sense of a show in the beginning. We would just be together talking about what was happening in our lives — the usual things. Somewhere in the midst of this we realised we had been working together for over twenty years. We had never really thought about it before. We would come together for a show and then move on to the next one. Our work has always been about the ‘now’, the ‘present’. We rarely considered the past or events moving through time in any conscious way when it came to making work. It came as a bit of a shock in some ways. Whilst we had been working together we had also been sharing our personal lives. We had seen each other create families and experience forms of happiness, live in different parts of the world and experience changes, grief and trauma and loss and everything in between. It was strangely moving to acknowledge this. As we had been witnessing each other live over the last twenty years, we had also been watching ourselves dying.

Edward II / is a leader who fails to lead — a king who loses everything because of his addiction to another man. Newly crowned and convinced he’s invincible, he flaunts his affair and in doing so, affronts the nation. Anthony Weigh’s new adaption leaves the Elizabethan language behind, to meld the lust and politics of the 14th and 21st centuries to dizzying effect.
