MALTHOUSE THEATRE FRIENDS: IN 2019 WE’RE BRINGING YOU FRESH THEATRE THAT WILL BE JOYOUS, TERRIFYING, HILARIOUS, AND LEAVE YOU AWESTRUCK. This season explores ghost stories, where history permeates the present and spirits surround us constantly. Whether it is the haunted house at number one Cloud Street, the ‘mad’ female mystics, or lovers and families returning from the past; these ghosts are our collective consciousness reminding us of the dangers of forgetting. Exquisite terror will be found in the vastness of outer space in the world premiere of the science fiction cult classic Solaris, and in the claustrophobia and isolation of the Australian thriller Wake in Fright. Together we’ll share the cathartic rush of screaming out loud in the dark. Season 2019 is also filled with hilarity as we introduce you to a personality-altering cult in The Temple, a lacerating comedy about US race relations in Underground Railroad Game and a side-splitting sendup of Melbourne’s class divisions as the lines between bogans and chardonnay sippers blur in Australian Realness. We’re also thrilled to return our smash-hit Indigenous revenge comedy Blackie Blackie Brown. She’s BAAACK! Our season is proudly bookended by performances from two of Australia’s most extraordinary divas: Ursula Yovich, who will electrify our Merlyn Theatre stage in Barbara and the Camp Dogs, and just in time for Christmas, Malthouse Theatre’s beloved cabaret star Meow Meow will whip us into a frenzy as we end the year with a purr. Thanks to your support, Season 2018 was a huge success. Join us again for another scream-filled ride in Season 2019.

— The New York Times
Today’s subject is race, with a little sex, slavery and power on the side. Let’s have fun with it. Let’s play a game. Yes, you’re all invited to watch. Underground Railroad Game is a darkly comedic take on how the First World has become jaundiced by its racially-charged back story. With repartee, acuity and nudity, creators and performers Jennifer Kidwell and Scott R. Sheppard interrogate the confusion of arguments and archetypes that have arisen from the shadows of Western society. The New York Times heralds it as one of the best, most influential American plays of the last 25 years. Join Malthouse Theatre on this wild ride, conducted by the original 2017 Obie Award-winning company, straight from the USA. There’s a shift-in-your-seat experience to be lived here. What you get from it will depend on how you play the game. #UNDERGROUNDRAILROADGAME

‘BLOW[S] THE ROOF OFF OUR COMPLACENCY’ — Time Out
Barbara fronts a pub rock band, captivating crowds with cutting wit, diabolical rage and unrepentant sexuality. She may be fun, she may be dangerous, and she may be speeding headlong towards a dead end. Rene, her ‘sister’, hears that Mum is sick. So, they set out on a wrenching road trip to reconnect with their disconnected family. The roar of motorbikes and growling dialogue are intercut with guitar-driven arias. Malthouse Theatre’s Merlyn stage is made over into a sticky-carpet band venue—a transformation that will see some lucky audience members seated up-close and personal with Barbara and the band. There, Ursula Yovich (Heart is a Wasteland) and Elaine Crombie (Blaque Showgirls) are ready to rock out again after a sell-out season in Sydney. Their powerful vocals are accompanied, live, by an all-female three-piece outfit. So, take a stool at the bar and amp up for a noisy night with Barbara and the Camp Dogs. Limited seats will be available to watch the show from the comfort of a couch, table or bar stool on the Merlyn Theatre stage. To select these seats please specify in the booking form on page 57.

The two families—the Lambs and the Pickles— are as contrasting as the Australia they inhabit. Teetotallers and tipplers, workhorses or wastrels, fate makers versus chance chasers. But really, they’re two sides of the same coin; one that was tossed during World War II and remained in motion for decades.

The power of this staggering Australian saga is more haunting than the ghosts who speak out from the walls. It’s more elusive than the serial killer who prowls their neighbourhood. It’s transcendent, like the Lambs and the Pickles themselves, whose lives and loves live on today. This is a once-in-a-generation chance to see Tim Winton’s award-winning story on stage, and in 2019 Malthouse Theatre ups the ante. Directed by Matthew Lutton, Cloudstreet will be a monumental new production unprecedented in scale and ambition. Encounter the epic story of Cloudstreet with a ticket to the full Cloudstreet Experience, where you will see the whole story in one event, with dinner or lunch provided for everyone. Or choose to discover the story over two nights, when the saga is shared in two parts. #CLOUDSTREET

That’s why the residents of The Temple are always being someone else. Feel free to jump in. It’s a liberating exercise that is really catching on. Join an orgy of comedic performers for a short course on How to Be Human. Everything’s set for a group session of gags, traumas, banter and tantrums—each as hysterical as the last. Dubliner Gavin Quinn concocts a wild Irish brew with Australian ingredients, including Nicola Gunn (Piece for Person and Ghetto Blaster), Ash Flanders (Blackie Blackie Brown), Mish Grigor (Ich Nibber Dibber), Aljin Abella and Marcus McKenzie. It’s the best little town in the world.
CAST / Zahr a Newman A Malthouse Theatre production.
Just passing through? Things a bit grim? Chin up. John Grant is well-read, but an outback misadventure strands him—cashless and jobless—in a harsh and remote Aussie outpost, Bundanyabba. So, he makes new ‘mates’: they’re quick with a drink, but with every scull a dark violence lurches forward. Are these blokes fair dinkum, or is there something more sinister at the heart of this little Aussie town? On our Beckett Theatre stage, the entire world of Wake in Fright is conjured by the always-evocative Zahra Newman (The Book of Mormon) accompanied by a sonic assault from art-electronica band, friendships. Under the direction of Declan Greene, Kenneth Cook’s iconic work of Australian Gothic horror is felt in the flesh. Bring sunscreen, buy a beer and wear your ear plugs. Once we pierce the Yabba’s ocker veneer, you better be ready for the explosive brutality pent up inside. #WAKEINFRIGHT

MYSTERIOUS PLANET. INCOMPREHENSIBLE INTELLIGENCE. GHOSTS OF REGRET. ‘Until you experience it,’ said Snow, ‘there’s no point talking about it.’ A cagey comment, but Kris took it in stride. Then, she experienced it. Within hours of arriving in orbit around the mercurial planet Solaris, Kris encounters evasive inhabitants, self-isolating scientists and the ghost of a lover who died long ago. Yes. Here, on the other side of the galaxy, Earth’s dead visit. Above an uninhabitable world possessed by a powerful intelligence, the crew are sleepless and lost. They fight with the nature of the planet below, their mission, their own motivations, and the dark horrors of their past that haunt the space station. Could the planet itself be to blame? Tarkovsky and Soderbergh have tackled Stanisław Lem’s classic sci-fi novel on screen. Now, Malthouse Theatre and The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh bring this world-premiere thriller to the stage. Matthew Lutton directs a script by master Scottish writer David Greig, featuring Eamon Farren (Twin Peaks) and a stellar international cast.

MY DEARWORTHY DARLING BECKETT T H E AT R E BY / Al ison Crogg o n DIRECTED & D E S I G N E D BY / THE RABB LE CAST INCLUDES / Jennif er Vul etic Malthouse Theatre and THE RABBLE present My Dearworthy Darling. Developed while in residence at La Chartreuse Centre national des écritures du spectacle; with the assistance of the Copyright Agency’s Cultural Fund; and generously supported through the Monash University Centre for Theatre and Performance, Artist in Residence Program.
A GAS LIGHT FLICKERS THROUGH A FOG OF AGES. In modern day Australia, a marriage is pulled apart by mistrust, paranoia and violence. A woman breaks apart in the turmoil. In medieval England, a woman has mystic visions. The patriarchs write them off as female madness, but she knows her truth. These visions allow her to be heard—maybe even to connect across centuries. In My Dearworthy Darling, threads that run through history are woven into a tapestry. As the strands draw ever tighter, the old languages threaten to tear asunder. What new worlds might open? The lyrical imagery of award-winning poet and novelist Alison Croggon, in a play written especially for feminist theatre mavericks THE RABBLE, is manifested in a visual feast. There is no madness here. Only truths that a corrupted world doesn’t want to hear. #DEARWORTHYDARLING

Australian Realness was developed with assistance from the Monash University Centre for Theatre and Performance, Artist in Residence Program.
A BOGAN AND BOURGEOIS BATTLE FOR A SUBURBAN BACKYARD. The summery embrace of an Aussie family Christmas. Familiar characters pop the cork on mid-range bubbly for a raucous celebration of festive traditions. But, all is not well. As adult kids regress to the parental homestead, Mum and Dad’s apparent wealth is waning. They’ve sold the Audi. There are fewer presents. They’re even renting out the back shed to supplement their income. There’s a bunch of yobbos in the backyard! Following a Christmas dinner invitation, ocker antics start to infect the house. First, it’s the tracky dacks. Then, it’s the durries. Before you know it, the working class are treading their unsophistication all over the polished floorboards … or so it may seem. Zoey Dawson pries open social divides with incisive comedy and exacting satire. Directed by Janice Muller, the cast members shine twice, each playing two characters—one bourgeois, one bogan. Australian Realness fast-forwards from the dawn of the Howard era to revel in the shattering of expectations and artificial class divisions.

‘THOUGHT-PROVOKING’ — The Age
A ritualistic battleground for two dance greats, Common Ground is a choreographic game of chess. Ingrained rules are upturned by unexpected moves —intricate gambits, sacrifices and reactive attacks. Chunky Move Artistic Director Anouk van Dijk evokes the birth of ballet in a modern milieu, as two of Australia’s most sought after dancers go movefor-move, through to the intense endgame. Tara Jade Samaya (ANTI—GRAVITY, Chunky Move) and Richard Cilli (CounterMove, Sydney Dance Company) perform a unique duel that lights the fuse on equality and betrayal. YOUR JOURNEY WITH MALTHOUSE THEATRE AWAITS. At Malthouse Theatre we collaborate with local and international artists to create inventive performances that cut to the core of the human experience. Theatre has the power to interrogate, disrupt and to be an agent of change—and we think it always should. At Malthouse Theatre, the work we produce explores the world personally, socially and politically. Based in a dedicated venue, The Coopers Malthouse in Melbourne, we are a home for live experiences that entertain and provoke a dialogue with and within audiences. Welcome to Malthouse Theatre. Join us in 2019 for an epic journey through an awe-inspiring year of theatre.
