Experience
The CapeVerde Islands As the largest independent specialist tour operator to Cape Verde we first visited the islands 20 years ago and were involved in the first direct flights from the UK. Our aim has always been to provide a knowledgeable, honest and open service so that we can be certain we are helping you find the perfect holiday and the perfect hotel to suit you. Honest and informative brochure We are passionate believers in portraying a destination in the most honest way possible, which is why this brochure has been put together by those who know and respect the Cape Verde islands and everything they stand for. The archipelago is a genuinely breathtaking place, with its diverse allure from sandy beaches and warm seas through to dramatic island interiors with their precipitous rice terraces to bustling cultural centres such as Praia and Mindelo. Tourism here is still relatively new, and for that reason there is information that every holidaymaker should be aware of before making a decision as to whether Cape Verde is right for them – some of which may not be mentioned by other tour operators.

A Personal Experience I first visited Cape Verde almost 9 years ago after watching ‘A Place in the Sun’. I was a travel agent at the time and even I had never heard of it! When we stepped onto that golden sandy beach with its crystal clear waters my partner and I fell in love with it instantly. We decided there and then to buy a holiday home and soon after sold up and moved permanently. Years have now passed and my affections for these unique islands have continued to grow. From the dramatic beauty of Santo Antão and Fogo, the rich and vibrant culture in São Vicente and the mesmerising beaches on Sal and Boa Vista, I love each and every part of the archipelago. Whichever island you choose to visit, I am sure you will be as captivated as I am. See you soon. TRACEY HALL Cape Verde Experience Resort Representative

What to expect
Hard to beat as an all-round holiday destination The Cape Verde islands are a crescent shaped archipelago 500km west of Senegal in the Atlantic Ocean. They enjoy their own diverse culture, strong sense of history and identity that have been widely influenced by Africa, Portugal and Brazil, yet remain unique to Cape Verde.
up to a destination that feels incredibly alive, raw and emerging for sure, but with a tropical climate and enough beauty and beguiling charm for even the most seasoned traveller. The short flights (around 6 hours), the small time difference (1 hour behind GMT) and the friendly people all add to the appeal – not to mention that the islands are still low key enough to feel like a bit of a discovery.
This diversity is only accentuated by the fact that each individual island is also so different from its neighbours – different in people and history, different in landscape, different in levels of development and even in dialect. It all adds
The ten islands all offer something different, and whilst it’s true that most holidaymakers go to Cape Verde to simply relax in the sunshine it does pay to explore, as there is so much variety on offer. You’ll find excellent

Fogo ©Westend61 GmbH/Alamy hotels and beaches; sun and surf on Sal and Boa Vista; an active volcano on Fogo where they produce their own wine of notable quality; the genuinely breathtaking interior of Santo Antão with its rice terraces clinging to crags and precipices, the history of Santiago and the throb of music in the cultural centre of Mindelo on São Vicente. Something for everyone! Flying is the most practical way of travelling from island to island however it should be noted that TACV (Cabo Verde Airlines), providing the island’s internal flights, can and do change schedules and flights are sometimes delayed, cancelled or even depart early. For this reason we recommend an overnight stay on Sal or Boa Vista for one night following or prior to an international flight. The smaller islands are more difficult to visit due to infrequent flights but our team will be happy to advise what itineraries are possible. There is a regular ferry service that operates between São Vicente and Santo Antão. For more information on the smaller islands such as São Nicolau, Brava, Maio and Santa Luzia please visit our website CapeVerde.co.uk
Currency The local currency in Cape Verde is the Escudo expressed as $ or CV Esc which can only be obtained on the islands. There is a fixed exchange rate of $110:1€ therefore with charges this works out at around $100 for each 1€. We recommend that you take either Euros or Sterling. Travellers cheques can be changed on some islands but the commission rates are high. Visa and Mastercard are accepted, and all other cards i.e. Switch and Maestro are not. We recommend that you do not rely solely on ATM machines for all your holiday money.
With its mixture of year-round sun, excellent beaches and geographical, cultural and historical interest, the Cape Verde islands are hard to beat as an all-round holiday destination.
Tourism - the facts It is vital to remember that tourism is still very much in its infancy in Cape Verde and health and safety, as well as service levels in hotels and restaurants, do not always compare favourably to hotels in more established destinations. There is poverty and you may encounter locals trying to sell you paintings and handicrafts. Despite being off-putting at times, the sellers are quite harmless. There is on-going development on the islands, which can range from single villas to huge complexes and during your visit you are likely to see and hear some building work. If there is building work taking place either in, or next to your chosen hotel, we will advise you if we feel it will affect your holiday.
A bit of background Given the location of the Cape Verde islands – 500km from the coast of West Africa – it’s not surprising that they remained uninhabited until Portuguese traders populated them in the 15th century. The islands became an outpost of the Portuguese empire and a stop on trading and slave routes across the Atlantic, including visits by Sir Francis Drake in the 1580s. As such the islands do have a unique culture, part West African, part Portuguese with a splash of Brazilian, and the people are fiercely proud of their heritage – both on a national and individual island level. INTRODUCTION
Climate
Language
The weather on each island can vary but year round temperatures on all the islands are in the mid to high twenties. Sal and Boa Vista enjoy virtually uninterrupted sunshine although it can rain occasionally between August and October. Due to their location in the Atlantic Ocean and some of the islands being flat, the archipelago attracts a constant breeze, which is heightened between November and April - perfect for water sports, though cooler in the evenings.
The official language of the islands is Portuguese, and this is used for anything that is written; yet Portuguese is rarely spoken. Instead they use Creole, their national language, and even this can differ from island to island. The Cape Verdeans are generally very friendly and welcoming – many people will approach just to chat and to use and practise their English.

Hotel service levels and standards in Cape Verde should not be compared to those in other holiday destinations, therefore we have created our own rating system based upon standards available within the islands and taking into consideration feedback from our customers. Our ratings are illustrated by a hibiscus flower. A flower outline illustrates a midway grade. Our team will be happy to discuss in more detail which hotels would best suit your requirements.

You will find a selection of restaurants in the main towns offering local Creole dishes as well as some international cuisine and many will have live Cape Verdean music at least once a week. There are numerous bars and restaurants in resort areas such as Santa Maria (Sal) and Mindelo (São Vicente) and these can be throbbing with music long into the night. The smaller, quieter islands including Boa Vista do not have such a wide selection of dishes and the limited menu may well be what they have prepared on the day. Prices vary, but expect to pay the equivalent of between 25-30€ for a three course meal with wine. Below are a couple of examples of the best and most popular Creole dishes: Cachupa - Cape Verde’s national dish, a slow cooked stew made with beans and fish or meat. Buzio - A tasty traditional stew made with shellfish and soya sauce. Bol de Cus-Cus - A delicious cake made with corn and sugar, usually served warm with butter and cabra cheese. Of particular note is the abundance of freshly caught seafood including tuna, wahoo, bica and lobster. Vegetarians are increasingly well catered for in hotels with many offering a vegetarian dish or cooking something to order. In local restaurants however, choice is more limited with a pasta dish or omelette typically offered.

INTRODUCTION
Families Children are made to feel very welcome in Cape Verde. Some hotels have children’s clubs and babysitting services, whilst others have play areas or daily activities for children to join. A trip to the islands will prove extremely interesting for children due to the vibrant culture, changing landscape and the range of activities available inside and out of the hotels. We do not recommend multi island hopping itineraries to those families with younger children due to the extra travelling involved. Please check our hotel descriptions, or to discuss the requirements for your family further, please call our expert team on 0845 330 2046.
Getting around Cape Verde Taxis are readily available in the larger towns and as a guide, a 2 to 3 mile journey would be approximately 3€. The most inexpensive way of getting around are the ‘aluguers’ that are easily identified buses that drive around towns, often full of passengers and packages. You simply shout when you want to get off! Car hire is available but roads can be poor and quite bumpy outside the main towns with little signage, therefore we do not recommend this.
A Personal Experience Whether you are a compulsive traveller or a compulsive sunbather, Cape Verde is a good choice. Island hopping by air, I touched down in Praia, on Santiago, and could have been in Africa. On São Vicente, with its British colonial history and haunting morna music, I felt like I had travelled the world on a half-day island tour. When staying put with my family, Sal ticked all the boxes: fantastic seafood, pure white beaches, turquoise water, the colourful sails of kitesurfers reeling in a cloudless blue sky, temperatures topping 27 degrees even in December… and all just a six-hour flight from London. ACTIVITIES
Activities
Out & about in CapeVerde Along with its superb beaches and great year-round climate, the Cape Verde islands offer a wide variety of activities and must-do excursions. There is certainly something for everyone whether you fancy a little bit extra on your holiday other than topping up your tan and enjoying the local cuisine. There is a wide range of excursions available on each island which can be taken by plane, boat, camel or quad bike, and on foot there are as many scenic hikes, rambles and treks as you can manage! To enquire further about a specific activity or excursion and to check what is best on your chosen island please call our reservations team on 0845 330 2046 or visit CapeVerde.co.uk/Excursions
Water sports The archipelago is one of the top locations for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing due to its glistening waters and constant breeze.
Fishing Catch small-fry with the locals or go rock or deep sea fishing for the big game and the great marlin.
Whale watching Cape Verde is reputed to be the birthing ground of humpback whales. Take the opportunity to catch a glimpse of these incredible creatures on a dedicated boat trip.
Trekking Jaw-dropping ravines, towering peaks and plummeting craters are just some of the delights on offer for walkers in Cape Verde. From amateurs to experienced hikers, guided or unguided routes are available. Of course each island does have its own niche and there are better times of year to visit if you wish to partake in a particular activity during your stay. To assist with your decision, we have put together a monthly grid which will help you to choose when to travel and which island suits you best.
Diving and snorkelling Corals and marine life are abundant around the islands, with plenty of interesting reefs, volcanic caverns and wrecks to explore.
Turtle conservation Now considered as one of the most important nesting sites in the world, thousands of loggerhead turtles flock to the beaches of Cape Verde each year. Enjoy the opportunity to see these endangered animals up close whilst doing your part to ensure their on-going protection with the non-profit assocation Turtle SOS Cabo Verde.

SAL
Take a quick glance at the huge golden sweep of the beach at the resort of Santa Maria and you’ll be under no illusion as to why the island of Sal has become famous for its beach holidays; if you’re looking to switch off totally and spend some time soaking up the sun, we might just have the perfect place for you...
Viewed from the plane window after a few hours of the slatey blue of the Atlantic Ocean, the island of Sal is quite a prospect. The interior of the island is of reddish rock, and for the most part is almost completely flat and barren whilst the southern coast holds the renowned golden beaches. To the north, the island’s capital, Espargos is home to the majority of the Sal’s residents and is well worth visiting if you wish to see the workings of an authentic Cape Verdean town.
Island of Sal
Famous for its year-round beach holidays The main resort area of Santa Maria is where you’ll find most of the hotels, plus a continually growing number of lively bars and restaurants offering a variety of local and international dishes. The highlight is of course the wonderfully fresh seafood, which you can see being brought in at the town’s pier every day. Santa Maria is only a 20-minute drive from the airport, so you can be by the pool or on the beach quickly after touching down. The beach is exceptional and does seem to roll on forever, therefore it’s not too difficult to find a nice quiet spot to relax. Many visitors come to Sal for the water sports and it’s hardly surprising. Sal’s long sandy beaches and turquoise waters make a wonderful playground for windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing. The wind can sometimes be very strong and Sal is considered to be amongst the world’s top five windsurfing locations. Diving and fishing are also available and there are plenty of places to hire equipment and organise trips, which can be arranged by our resort team. There is currently development work happening across Sal including parts of Santa Maria however, we have found it does not detract from the main reason people go to Santa Maria – the sun and the glorious sandy beach.

Hotel Morabeza Island of Sal
Customer Favourite - Family Run - Beachfront
T
he Morabeza has once again been voted the top hotel by our guests. It is family run with friendly staff, is immaculately kept, has great facilities and restaurants, and is located just a few steps from the glorious Santa Maria beach.
Morabeza is a local word meaning ‘hospitality’ - a term which the hotel more than lives up to. It’s the longest established hotel on Sal, and was originally the home of a Belgian family, the Vynckiers. The fact that it’s now run by their granddaughter (Sophie Marcellesi) adds a real sense of continuity and provides a strong family atmosphere.
As the suntan starts to fade the lovely holiday memories linger on - we have just returned from our 7th holiday in Cape Verde staying at the ‘Hotel Morabeza’ this hotel just keeps getting better. Mr Palmer, Brentwood
It has developed into a very attractive and much sought after hotel, particularly with the new addition of a third swimming pool. The executive block continues to be a firm favourite amongst guests housing a smart pool area, excellent rooms and spacious suites. The grounds of the hotel are extensive with a broad range of superbly furnished room types and with excellent facilities at every turn: the main pool area with a bar, tennis courts, archery, mini-golf, a well-stocked library and games room equipped with two snooker tables and table tennis as well as a gym. All this and yet the hotel never feels overly busy, it absorbs everything into its air of peace and calm. There is also the superb Beach Club, which is right on the sand and is the perfect spot for lunch or a refreshing drink. A popular way to explore the resort’s excellent restaurants and themed evening meals is choosing the bon appetit dining option. With this, you get dinner at the hotel in the newly refurbished Les Palmiers restaurant on the first and last night of your stay plus the Saturday barbecue buffet each week, leaving you free to venture out into Santa Maria to try the local bars and restaurants on the other evenings.
Hotel Morabeza is brilliantly positioned behind a stunning beach, a gentle stroll from the (beating) heart of Santa Maria. The staff are delightful, food delicious, and blissful beds very comfortable.

Odjo d’Agua Hotel Island of Sal
Family Run - Central Location - Small & Friendly
R
ight in the heart of Santa Maria, enjoying a privileged location and its own sandy beach, Odjo d’Agua is a small, family-run hotel with an authentic Cape Verdean feel.
We can’t praise the hotel enough. First of all the staff were so friendly from the receptionist to the chambermaids. The actual location was stunning and breakfast on the terrace was just perfect.
The hotel has a charming interior with many personal touches as well as antiques and photographs from the owners’ history. The warmth of the greeting adds to this family atmosphere as well as guests receiving a personal guided tour of the hotel. The rooms are simple but comfortable and are situated on two floors, with upgrade options available including sea views and suites.
Mrs White, Poole
From the swimming pool, the views along the shore are fabulous, although nothing can match the outlook from the Farolin restaurant. Perched on a sea wall promontory, the restaurant comes alive at night with gentle live music and serves some of the finest freshly caught seafood anywhere on Sal. A bon appetit dining option is available at a supplement, with this you get three evening meals per week, offering the perfect way to experience the cuisine both at the hotel and around Santa Maria. To the side of the hotel, there is a more sheltered sandy cove, ideal for sunbathing or having a quick dip. For those who want to stroll along the sand, the Santa Maria beach with its soft white sand and crystal clear waters stretch as far as the eye can see. The Odjo d’Agua is only a short stroll from the resort centre of Santa Maria and is the ideal choice for those wishing to venture out of an evening. There is an impressive array of restaurants serving the local Creole dishes or international cuisine as well as bustling bars and a variety of shops to peruse at leisure. Please note there are some unguarded drops around this hotel.
I particularly liked the atmosphere created by the excellent location and the staff. ACTIVITIES

Tropical Residence Island of Sal
SELF-CATERING Couples - Families - Apartments
N
ewly built and in a quieter area of Santa Maria, the Tropical Residence is a welcome addition to our programme and a fine example of the self-catering accommodation now available in Cape Verde. It is the ideal choice for those wishing to sample the wide variety of cafés and bustling restaurants in the resort. For those who simply want the flexibility of doing things their own way and at their own pace, there is also a wide variety of produce on offer nearby, from the colourful market stalls to local delis and fish fresh off the boats from the central pier. The residence is modern in style with lush gardens and swaying palms. Set over three floors and surrounding the large inviting pool area, each spacious apartment is well equipped with all modern conveniences and is decorated in a contemporary style. The soft golden sands and aquamarine seas at Santa Maria beach are just a 5-minute walk from the residence and it is just a little further along to the town centre, where guests can truly experience the beating heart of Sal. Sure to be a popular choice with our more independent guests, the Tropical Residence is ideal for those wishing to explore all that Santa Maria has to offer.

BOA VISTA
There is a tendency to resort to over-used adjectives when describing Boa Vista – tranquil, beautiful and unique. Yet there is something of all of those things in this beguiling island. From the emerging dunes and towering date palms, to the blanketed sands and glistening waters, the beaches will truly take your breath away. Whilst the interior of the island is something of a lunar-like moonscape sculpted by the winds over the years, the outer edges are dominated by sweeping golden sand and turquoise sea. Praia des Chaves beach is a stunning prospect, hundreds of metres wide and stacked up at one end with massive dunes. Santa Monica, in the south of the island, is something else again: its 15kms of sand stretch away from you in either direction. Ervatao beach is a true haven for wildlife and one of the world’s key nesting sites for loggerhead turtles.
Island of Boa Vista
The perfect place for escaping and relaxing Boa Vista’s main town and population centre is Sal Rei, a sleepy little port in the north west. It is starting to gather a small selection of bars and restaurants, but like a microcosm of the island, activity here tends to be fairly low key and normally at the weekends. This is translated to the hotels, which although having varying levels of facilities, daytime activities and night time entertainment, above all else tend to be places to relax and unwind. What the hotels all share however, is privileged access to the real allure of Boa Vista – the beaches. As well as being a sunbathing heaven, activities are aplenty on Boa Vista. Due to the constant breeze, the island is the perfect venue for water sports of all types - from surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing, to deep sea fishing and diving. For those wanting to stay on land, there are also a number of excursions available. Drive over the sand dunes on a quad bike for an exhilarating ride or take a 4x4 tour across to the deserted Praia de Santa Maria, named after the marooned Spanish cargo vessel that ran aground on the beach in 1968. Marine Club Island of Boa Vista
Couples - Older Families - Beachfront
S
et on a hillside overlooking the bay of Praia de Cruz, the Marine Club is an attractive hotel with an international flavour.
The hotel offers good facilities including a lovely pool area, a massage suite, a daily activity programme, and evening entertainment consisting of local or international music. The grounds are very well kept, with flowering bougainvillea and tropical plants lining the narrow cobbled lanes and pathways leading down to the sheltered beach area and bay. All the rooms are simply furnished and scattered on the small hillside (making this hotel unsuitable for the less mobile) and you also have the upgrade option of a sea facing villa with a spacious terrace. Marine Club benefits from wonderful views across the bay throughout the hotel, which can perhaps best be enjoyed from the restaurant and bar. The wooden pier that stretches out over the crystal clear water provides the perfect place to sit and relax or enjoy a pre-dinner apéritif. Meals are buffet style and are taken in the main restaurant or at the snack bar by the pool. As well as half board, there is a full board and soft drinks board basis available at a supplement, including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks along with unlimited soft drinks and water. For those who wish to venture out of an evening, you are also only a short taxi ride away from the island’s capital Sal Rei, with its quiet squares and ever growing number of restaurants and bars.

Orquidea Guest House Island of Boa Vista
Family Run - Central Location - Small & Friendly
S
et in colourful, tropical gardens filled with hibiscus and palms, the family-run Orquidea Guest House is a charming, sea front property and already a popular choice with our guests.
With only 10 rooms surrounding the central courtyard, the property is small and intimate whilst the chattering macaws Abare and Kiriku, pet dogs and fresh water turtles living in the grounds all add to its quirky Cape Verdean character as do its friendly owners. All rooms are simply decorated and have their own balcony where you can enjoy the sea breeze and take in the peaceful setting. Being only a stone’s throw from the shoreline, the property is the ideal choice for beach lovers – stroll through the sand dunes or cool off with a quick dip in the Atlantic Ocean, the choice is yours! The guest house is also only 250m from the town square of Sal Rei, Boa Vista’s capital, with a handful of bars and restaurants playing live Cape Verdean music at the weekends. Whilst staying at Orquidea, we strongly recommend exploring the island. From awe-inspiring beaches and the famous turtle conservation to marooned shipwrecks and dune buggy tours, there are many excursions available. Orquidea Guest House is the perfect choice for those wishing to get away from the larger resorts and experience the true Boa Vista.

Spinguera Eco Lodge Island of Boa Vista
Family Run - Tranquil - Small & Intimate
S
et on the edge of the Norte national park, about 8km from Sal Rei and surrounded by nothing but sand dunes, Spinguera is a truly unique property with a sustainable ethos that is passionately upheld by its Italian owners.
Once a settlement for farmers and fishermen, this beautiful eco lodge has been transformed into a peaceful haven for rest and relaxation with an authentic Boa Vistan feel. This charming property comprising only 12 rooms is arranged in stylish stone cottages which have been beautifully designed to connect with their natural surroundings. Sculpted wood, stone and seashells form the decoration of most rooms as well as an abundance of linen drapes. Whilst there is no swimming pool in the grounds, there are plenty of sun traps and shady hideaways on offer – while away the hours on one of the hammocks or soak up the sunshine on the cushions and loungers. The white sands and turquoise waters of Spinguera beach are also only a 10-minute walk across the dunes, where loungers and bali beds have been provided for your comfort. Although the sea can be rough at times, the picturesque bay is simply idyllic and the perfect spot for a stroll or a paddle. There is also a more sheltered cove which is safer for swimming, a further 20 minutes away. With a charming restaurant onsite, serving a fusion of Cape Verdean classics and Italian cuisine, it is highly recommended to upgrade to half or full board. The food here is delicious and fresh and the service, friendly and personable. Spinguera Eco Lodge is an ideal choice for those seeking an authentic and unspoilt location with little but the sea and a good book for company. HOTEL FACILITIES

SÃO VICENTE
Home to some of Cape Verde’s greatest musicians, writers and thinkers, São Vicente is regarded as one of the main cultural centres of the archipelago. With its vibrant atmosphere, architectural delights and varied landscapes, a visit to the island will not disappoint. The capital city of Mindelo is the hub of the island and is rightly proud of its rich traditions in music and the arts. Visitors are likely to hear the delicate melancholy of the traditional mornas as sung by the island’s most famous daughter, the late Cesária Évora, plus the more frantic sound of the funana coming from the bars and restaurants, especially over the weekends. The architectural reflections of early British and colonial influences are also present with cobbled squares, wide streets and old-style buildings and monuments, reminiscent of times past.
Island of São Vicente
A vibrant culture full of Cape Verdean flavour The port of Mindelo is a stop for vessels of all shapes and sizes from local fishing boats, to merchant ships and those sailing between the continents. Mindelo is also the gateway to the island of Santo Antão, with the ferry across to Porto Novo departing from here. Geographically, the island offers a vast array of landscapes - from the dramatically beautiful mountainous interior, the dried river bed of Ribeira Julião with its lush plantations and typical Cape Verdean villages, to the spectacular coastline around the Baia das Gatas. Festivals are an important pastime for the Cape Verdeans with the biggest celebrations taking place on the island of São Vicente. Head to Mindelo for the Creole Carnival each February inspired by the carnival festivities and costumes of Brazil with a Portuguese flavour mixed in, and the Full Moon Festival at Baia das Gatas celebrated at the end of August.

T
he Porto Grande is a comfortable hotel overlooking the central square right at the heart of Mindelo, the cultural capital of São Vicente and the second largest city in the archipelago. They say if you want to understand Cape Verdean music, you need to stay in Mindelo...
The guest rooms are simple but comfortable and are situated on two floors, either overlooking the town square to the front of the hotel or the pool to the rear. Live music is played in the lobby bar some evenings, which attracts both locals and holidaymakers, and the outside seating area overlooking the square is a lovely spot to enjoy a drink. The hotel’s à la carte restaurant offers a mix of international and local traditional food with a definite Portuguese bias. During the day you can relax around the hotel swimming pool, use the facilities including a well-equipped gym, or take an easy 15-minute stroll to Laginha, a lovely urban beach, popular with locals, where bathing is possible, tides permitting. Being conveniently located in the heart of the city, you can also take the opportunity to explore Mindelo’s plentiful shops, markets, restaurants and layers of fascinating history, openly displayed in the colourful buildings of varying architectural styles. SANTO ANTÃO
With precipitous peaks, jaw-dropping ravines and dwellings clinging to the mountain sides, Santo Antão is a beautiful island and the second largest in the archipelago. Many visitors are attracted to the island for its hiking, particularly the ribeiras, but for those who prefer a less energetic option, the stunning views can still be appreciated from the road. The scenic drive from Porto Novo in the south across the mountain range to Ribeira Grande in the north east is an awe-inspiring journey. Landscapes quickly change from being bare and arid to mountains which, as the road meanders expose breathtaking views of verdant valleys at every turn, with villages appearing either deep below or high into the distance. Visitors to Santo Antão must also see the village of Fontainhas, perched on the edge of a rock above a deep ribeira. The houses in this unique village line the street and have a sheer drop of several hundred metres behind them.

SANTIAGO
Santiago is the largest and most developed island in the archipelago with a rich history and dramatic mountainous scenery. Its unique blend of diverse landscapes makes it aesthetically pleasing to visit: from volcanic rocks and barren plains to green valleys and beautiful dark sand beaches.
The spectacular hinterland of Santiago is superb for walking, with most trails starting in the interior of the island and then following a ribeira or stream down to the coast. The most challenging hike on the island is to ascend the Pico da Santo Antonio, a twin peak, shaped rather like a canine tooth. Alternatively, a tour up to the northern fishing village of Tarrafal and back along the east coast is sure to be an unforgettable day out.
Island of Santiago The archipelago’s historic capital
In the islands’ capital Praia, a bustling African town with a clear Mediterranean flavour, you are sure to see Santiago’s vibrant culture and turbulent history. Old colonial buildings line the main square on the Plateau, where you will find the Presidential Palace and the Palace of Justice. Bustling markets, chic cafés and quality restaurants can also be enjoyed and are dotted around the town. A day trip to the old capital of Cidade Velha (a UNESCO world heritage site) and Forte Real de São Filipe, the main slave trading point between Europe, Africa and America, provides an interesting insight into the island’s troubled past. This is where the history of Cape Verde began and the town has had many famous visitors over the years including Sir Francis Drake and Charles Darwin. Please see page 33 for other hotels on the island or the Sail Cruiser Panorama on page 34 which sails from Praia.

FOGO
Described as the ‘Island of Fire’ due to its active volcano, Fogo is an absolute highlight of any visit to Cape Verde. The fourth largest in the archipelago, its lunar like landscape with steep peaks, dark rugged rocks and black sand beaches showcase the island’s wild volcanic nature. Still warm from its last eruption in 1995, a trip up to the active volcanic crater, Cha das Caldeiras, is a must. Visitors can walk around in the crater, and see evidence of the spectacularly fertile land at its heart, where the islanders grow coffee beans and the grapes which produce the famous Fogo wine. São Filipe, the capital of Fogo, is a pretty town with character, and is the third largest in Cape Verde. The buildings are of Portuguese design painted in pastel colours with terracotta roofs. Pretty squares, cobbled streets and plenty of trees and flowering plant pots add to the vibrant and colourful town scenes.

Something Different...
Experience the vibrant culture and charming locals on São Vicente and Sal. Staying your first 4 nights in Mindelo, the second largest city in the archipelago, you will fall in love with the colonial architecture and cobbled streets as well as the locals’ passion for music; from the delicate melancholy of the traditional mornas to the more frantic tempos of funana. Back on Sal, the draw of Santa Maria awaits with its stunning stretches of beach and ever growing numbers of boutiques, bars and restaurants.
Spend time in two of our most popular hotels and get to know the stunning islands of Sal and Boa Vista. With clear waters and pure white sands, Sal is a beach lover’s paradise offering a plethora of water sports as well as a vibrant atmosphere in the town of Santa Maria. Home to some of the most dazzling beaches on the archipelago, Boa Vista is an ever changing landscape, sculpted by the wind. Sahara like oases are dotted around the interior and depending on the time of year, turtles can be spotted on some of the beaches.
Enjoy two of our most unique properties and spend time exploring Boa Vista. Starting at Spinguera Eco Lodge on the deserted north coast, this twin centre offers you the chance to fully unwind with nothing but a good book for company. The remainder of your stay at the Orquidea Guest House will allow you to explore the quaint town of Sal Rei whilst being the perfect base from which to discover this picturesque island. Marvel at the beauty of Santa Monica beach and bear witness to the marooned shipwreck or drive across the sand dunes of the Viana Desert, the choice is yours.

With our extensive knowledge we can also tailormake an itinerary for you according to your island and hotel preferences. Please call our team on 0845 330 2046 who will be happy to assist.

All our properties have been carefully selected and visited by us. We ensure that they offer acceptable standards of safety and quality and that they conform to the local fire and safety laws and regulations, however these laws are not as stringent as in the UK.

We work with Dick Sisman, founder of the Tourism industry climate change service (TICOS) and former Managing Director of Green Globe and Green Flag International, offering you the chance to help offset some of the environmental damage aircraft emissions cause. By opting in to our Carbon Offset Scheme, a donation of £5 per person will be invested into our new Gambian community tree planting programme which not only offers carbon benefits but at the same time economically supports rural villages. FAIR TRADING CHARTER The Cape Verde Experience is operated by Serenity Holidays (Serenity Holidays Ltd). We are committed to a policy of fair trading and make every effort to ensure that you have an enjoyable holiday with us. Our terms of trade have been formulated as a result of our responsibilities under law and in no way affect your statutory rights as a consumer. We accept responsibility for the quality of the holidays we provide and the excursions booked with our local representatives. Please read this carefully and keep with you on holiday as it sets out the basis of the contract between you and Serenity Holidays Ltd. We are a member of ABTA, membership number V5963. We are obliged to maintain a high standard of service to you by ABTA’s Code of Conduct. We can also offer you an arbitration scheme for the resolution of disputes arising out of, or in connection with this contract. Further information on the Code and arbitration can be found at http://www.abta.com DATA PROTECTION When you make an enquiry or booking with us, information about you is collected. This refers to information such as your name, contact details, travel preferences and any special needs/disabilities or dietary requirements. By giving us these details, you consent for these to be used as necessary in processing your booking and complying with legal requirements (e.g. forwarding passenger lists to airlines). We may also use your details to send you future holiday brochures or advise of special offers from ourselves - should you NOT want to receive these, please tell us. Some of your information may be considered “sensitive personal data” under the Data Protection Act 1998, which will only be used when it is necessary for us to communicate your needs to a hotel or airline. For more information – please refer to our ‘Privacy Statement’ shown on our website www.CapeVerde.co.uk. We sell the following arrangements: Package Holiday A “package holiday” is a combination of at least two of the following services (a) transport, (b) accommodation or (c) other tourist services (not ancillary to any transport or accommodation and forming a significant part of the arrangements) where booked through us at an inclusive price. Accommodation or Flight only If you book accommodation or flight only through us, we will accept responsibility for your booking in accordance with the terms set out in the relevant sections below. As this is a single component, the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992 do not apply. FINANCIAL SECURITY: If you book a package holiday through us the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992 require us to provide security for the monies that you pay for the package holidays booked from this brochure. For packages that include flights we provide this security by way of an ATOL (number 1866) administered by the Civil Aviation Authority. When you buy an ATOL protected air holiday package, or flight only arrangements, you will receive a confirmation invoice from us (or via your travel agent through which you booked) confirming your arrangements and your protection under our Air Travel Organiser’s Licence number [1866]. In the unlikely event of our insolvency, the CAA will ensure that you are not stranded abroad and will arrange to refund any money you have paid to us for an advance booking. If we are unable to provide the services listed (or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the Trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme. You agree that in return for such a payment or benefit you assign absolutely to those Trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out of or relating to the non-provision of the services, including any claim against us, the travel agent (or your credit card issuer where applicable). You also agree that any such claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme. For further information visit the ATOL website at www.atol.org.uk. The price of our air holiday packages includes the ATOL Protection Contribution (APC) we pay to the CAA. This charge is included in our advertised prices. For packages that do not include flights, as a member of the Association of Bonded Travel Organisers Trust Limited (ABTOT) Serenity Holidays Ltd has provided a bond to meet the requirements of the Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations 1992. In the event of Serenity Holidays’ insolvency, protection is provided for non-flight packages commencing in and returning to the UK and other non-flight packages excluding pre-arranged travel to and from your destination. Please note that packages booked outside the UK are only protected when purchased directly with Serenity Holidays Ltd. In the above circumstances, if you have not yet travelled you may claim a refund, or if you have already travelled, you may claim repatriation to the starting point of your non-flight package. Flight Only arrangements are protected by our ATOL (number 1866) as described above. 1. YOUR HOLIDAY BOOKING When making a booking you must be aged over 18 years and have the authority to accept and do accept on behalf of your party the terms of these booking conditions. All correspondence and documents are sent to the party leader who is responsible to us for all payments in respect of the booking. The contract is made on the terms of the information in this brochure, the details set out in the confirmation invoice. We agree that the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction and English Law applies (unless you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, in which case you can bring proceedings in your local court under Scottish or Northern Irish law, as applicable). Our confirmation invoice is our acceptance of the booking (as detailed therein), and the contract is made on its issue. We ask you to check the details and any anomaly should be reported to us or your travel agent immediately otherwise the details shown on the confirmation will be presumed to be correct. Verbal quotations should not be considered binding until the first invoice confirmation is received. All holidays and offers published in this brochure are subject to availability at the time of booking. 2. PAYMENT If you wish to confirm a booking you must pay the deposit of £95pp. Your final payment will be detailed on your invoice and must be paid in full no later than 8 weeks before your departure, or your booking may be deemed cancelled and your deposits retained. If payment for your holiday is made by credit card a handling fee, currently 2% will be levied. 3. IF YOU WISH TO CANCEL YOUR BOOKING You will need to let us know as soon as possible either by telephone or in writing (or must ensure your travel agent does so on your behalf). Since we incur costs from the time we confirm your booking, the cancellation charges set out below will apply, calculated from the date on which we receive your notice of cancellation. You will then receive a cancellation invoice detailing any charges. No. of days before departure

The charges above apply to your total holiday price excluding any insurance premiums, amendment charges or charges for goods sold and dispatched. The conditions of your travel insurance policy may allow a refund claim. Please note: if any members of your party cancel, but the others still wish to travel, it may be necessary to re-calculate the cost per person based on the new party size as the accommodation may now be under-occupied. This may result in an increased amount per person payable to secure the original booking. 4. CHARGES FOR NON-INCLUSIVE HOTEL ITEMS AND DAMAGES You enter into a separate contract with the hotel or residence for these items (e.g. parking, bar bills etc.), and agree to pay locally for any charges for items or services used by your party and not included in your holiday price. The accommodation we arrange for you can only be used by those people named on your Invoice. You are not allowed to share the accommodation with anyone else or let others stay there. 5. IF YOU REQUEST A CHANGE TO YOUR BOOKING All amendments to your booking, e.g. name changes, dates of travel or accommodation, will incur a charge, the amount of which will depend on the nature of the change and the time before the date of travel. Any changes made within 8 weeks of departure may be treated as cancellations and re-bookings. The lead name on a booking cannot be changed under any circumstances and this would also be classed as a cancellation and re-booking.
6. IF YOU BOOK THROUGH A TRAVEL AGENT we will assume that in dealing with us the agent is acting on your behalf. All monies you pay to the travel agent are held by him on our behalf at all times. 7. IF WE CHANGE YOUR HOLIDAY Although it is unlikely, we may occasionally have to change your holiday arrangements and we reserve the right to change or cancel your booking. Most changes are minor and we will always endeavour to advise you or your travel agent of any such changes at the earliest possible date. Note: Any amendment or cancellation fees you incur in terms of other arrangements you have made with other providers under separate contracts are not claimable from us. Package Holiday & Flight only: A change of airline, aircraft type, overseas airport of destination, travel timings by 12 hours or less and accommodation of a similar or higher standard in the same resort or region are classed as minor changes which do not entitle you to cancel or change to another holiday / flight without paying our normal administration charges, and for which no compensation or refund is due. In accordance with EU Regulation 2111/2005 we are required to advise you of the actual carrier operating your flight/connecting flight/transfer. We do this by listing carriers to be used or likely to be used as follows: Thomson Airways and TACV Cabo Verde Airlines. Any changes to the actual airline after you have received your tickets will be notified to you as soon as possible and in all cases at check-in or at the boarding gate. The carrier may occasionally have to change the type of aircraft used on a particular flight without advance warning. In such circumstances where you have booked and paid an additional seat supplement and such seat cannot be provided, then you will receive only a refund of the supplement paid. Occasionally, we have to make major changes to your travel arrangements or accommodation. A major change is a change made before departure, which, on the basis of the information given to us by you at the time of booking we can reasonably expect will have a major effect on your holiday. The following changes are examples of major changes: changing travel times by over 12 hours, your UK departure airport (excluding London airports), your holiday region, a change to a lower standard or type of accommodation or reducing the number of days’ holiday. If we have to make a major change or cancel your holiday we will tell you as soon as possible. Where possible, we will offer the following options: you can either a) accept the changed arrangements b) purchase another holiday/flight from us at the advertised current selling price or c) cancel your booking upon which we will refund your monies in full and final settlement. If you have booked a Package Holiday, subject to the note below, irrespective of whether you choose a), b) or c) we will pay compensation to passengers who paid the full brochure price as follows: No of days before departure

Accommodation only: If we make a change to your accommodation and you don’t want to accept it, you can take any alternative we are able to offer you (you will pay the increase in cost if the replacement is advertised at a higher price than your original booking, or receive a refund of the difference if it is less expensive) or a refund of the money you have paid to us. This does not apply where the change is not material. Examples of non-material changes include, but are not limited to, temporary withdrawal of facilities or seasonal unavailability of amenities. If we have to cancel your accommodation, again we may be able to offer you an alternative. If you accept it, you would pay the difference if it was advertised at a higher price than your original accommodation, or receive a refund of the difference if it was advertised at a lower price. Or we will refund the monies you have paid us for your accommodation. We will not be responsible to pay any compensation following a change or a cancellation by us. Applicable to Package Holiday, Accommodation or Flight only bookings: Note: If a change or cancellation occurs because of circumstances beyond our control, for example war, threat of war, riots, civil disturbances, actual or threatened terrorist activity and its consequences, industrial disputes, natural or nuclear disasters, fire, health risks, adverse weather conditions, hurricanes, floods, unavoidable technical problems with transport, closure or congestion of airports or ports, epidemic or pandemic illness and all similar situations we will have no liability to you. No compensation payments, expenses or any other sums, including the cost of securing alternative accommodation will be paid by us. 8. IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT In the unlikely event you have cause for complaint whilst abroad, about the accommodation or about any other element of your holiday, you must refer it immediately to our local representative. It is unreasonable for you to take little or no action whilst on holiday and wait until you return to complain, and you must take reasonable steps to minimise the consequences of the problem. If you fail to follow this simple procedure we will have been deprived of the opportunity to investigate and rectify your complaint whilst you were in resort and this may affect your rights under this contract. If a problem cannot be resolved locally you should complete and sign a Guest Comment form in resort, setting out the details of the problem. This should be handed to your representative who will give you a copy; it is essential that you also report the problem to any supplier of the service you are complaining about. Any complaint must also be followed by written confirmation of all the details, with any supporting evidence, within 28 days of your return from holiday. 9. OUR RESPONSIBILITY Package Holiday: If the contract we have with you is not performed or is improperly performed by us or our suppliers we will pay you appropriate compensation if this has affected the enjoyment of your travel arrangements. However, we will not be liable where any failure in the performance of the contract is due to: you; or a third party unconnected with the provision of the travel arrangements and where the failure is unforeseeable or unavoidable; or unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised; or an event which we or our suppliers, even with all due care, could not foresee or forestall. Our liability, except in cases involving death, injury or illness, shall be limited to a maximum of [3] times the cost of your travel arrangements. Our liability will also be limited in accordance with and/ or in an identical manner to: (a) The contractual terms of the companies that provide the transportation for your travel arrangements. These terms are incorporated into this contract; and (b) Any relevant international convention, for example the Montreal Convention in respect of travel by air, the Athens Convention in respect of travel by sea, the Berne Convention in respect of travel by rail and the Paris Convention in respect of the provision of accommodation, which limit the amount of compensation that you can claim for death, injury, delay to passengers and loss, damage and delay to luggage. We are to be regarded as having all benefit of any limitation of compensation contained in these or any conventions. You can ask for copies of the transport companies’ contractual terms, or the international conventions, from our offices: Serenity Holidays Ltd, Atlantic House, 3600 Parkway, Solent Business Park, Fareham, Hampshire PO15 7AN We do not accept liability for happenings or actions outside our control, e.g. delays to travel services, the temporary invasion of pests, the presence of indigenous animals or insects, government action, industrial disputes, damage or inconvenience resulting from the weather (e.g. drought conditions) or from acts of God, or your party’s negligence resulting in loss or accident. If the contract we have with you is not performed or is improperly performed as a result of failures attributable to a third party unconnected with the provision of the services, or as a result of failures due to unusual and unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, the consequences of which could not have been avoided even if all due care had been exercised, or an event which we or our suppliers, even with all due care, could not foresee or forestall, and you suffer an injury or other material loss, we will offer you such prompt assistance as is reasonable in the circumstances. If you
have taken our recommended insurance cover, you must make an insurance claim in respect of any legal fees incurred abroad for that purpose, and if you have taken alternative insurance, you must do likewise under any Legal Expenses cover provided by it. You must also provide us with the confirmation from the insurance company of receipt of your notification to them of your claim. Excursions or other tours that you may choose to book or pay for whilst you are on holiday are not part of your package holiday provided by us. For any excursion or other tour that you book, your contract will be with the operator of the excursion or tour and not with us. We are not responsible for the provision of the excursion or tour or for anything that happens during the course of its provision by the operator. Accommodation only: We have a duty to select the accommodation providers with reasonable skill and care. We have no liability to you for the actual provision of the accommodation, except in cases where it is proved that we have breached that duty and damage to you has been caused. Therefore, providing we have selected the provider with reasonable care and skill, we will have no liability to you for anything that happens at the accommodation or any acts or omissions of the provider or others. We also have no liability in the following situations: i. where the accommodation cannot be provided as booked due to circumstances beyond our control (see the Note in clause 7) ii. where you incur any loss or damage that could not have been foreseen at the time of your booking, based on the information provided by you. iii. where you incur any loss or damage that relates to any business activity. iv. where any loss or damage relates to any services which do not form part of our contract with you. If we are found liable to you on any basis, we limit the amount we have to pay you to a maximum of three times the cost of your accommodation. This limit does not apply to cases involving death or injury. 10. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY You undertake to exercise due and reasonable care in respect of your holiday accommodation and its contents, to leave it in a clean and complete condition, to respect local and on-site regulations and bye-laws, to limit party numbers to those on your confirmation, to remit payments as invoiced on or before the due dates, to indemnify us against all loss or damage arising directly or indirectly from any act, default or omission of your party, and not to exceed the published occupation capacity of the accommodation. Any serious abuse of a property or its contents may render you liable to eviction without compensation. 11. PRICES AND SURCHARGES The price of your holiday was calculated using the exchange rate of £1 = 1.18€ on 30th April 2013. We reserve the right to increase or reduce prices, and the current price of your holiday will be advised to you at the time of booking. Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of all the information and prices provided to you, regrettably errors do occasionally occur. In the event that an incorrect price has been given in error, any booking made based on this price, will not be valid. You will be advised of the mistake at the earliest opportunity and you will then have the option either to pay the correct price for the travel arrangements or to cancel and receive a full refund of any monies you may already have paid. Once you have booked your holiday we reserve the right to surcharge for cost increases due to government action such as changes in VAT or any other government imposed charges, transportation costs (including the cost of fuel), taxes or fees chargeable for services such as landing taxes, embarkation or disembarkation fees at airports, and exchange rates. Package Holidays There will be no charge within 30 days of your departure. We will absorb such increases up to 2% of your basic holiday price (excluding insurance premiums and any amendment charges). If the surcharge is greater than 10% of your holiday price you have the option of changing to another holiday that we offer (if we are able to offer an alternative you will not have to pay more, but if it is of a lower quality you will be refunded the difference in price) or you have the right to cancel (within 14 days of receiving surcharge notification), in which case we will refund in full all monies paid to us except insurance premiums and any amendment charges. Should the price of your holiday go down due to the changes mentioned above, by more than 2% of your holiday cost, then any refund due will be paid to you. However, please note that travel arrangements are not always purchased in local currency and some apparent changes will have no impact on the price of your holiday due to contractual and other protection in place. Accommodation and Flight only We reserve the right to pass on all increases. If we ask you to pay us any increases in taxes, similarly, if any taxes you have paid to us are reduced or abolished, you will be entitled to claim a refund. Such right shall not apply in respect of any surcharge paid in respect of aviation fuel costs. 12. TRAVEL SERVICES When you travel by air the relevant carrier’s ‘Conditions of Carriage’ will apply to your journey, some of which may limit liability or exclude liability in accordance with the relevant international conventions. Copies of the conditions are available for inspection at any ABTA travel agent. Information given by us about such services is for guidance only and the carriers concerned accept no responsibility for our brochures. It is your responsibility to report promptly at the check-in times given by the carriers and with the appropriate valid travel documents (e.g. passports), and we cannot be held responsible for any costs incurred by you if you fail to do so. Occasionally there are times beyond our control when a flight is delayed. We will work closely with the airline and our resort office to make sure any delay is as short as possible and that your overseas transfer and accommodation arrangements are changed if necessary. Our aim is to minimise the inconvenience of delays as far as possible. Under EU law you have rights in some circumstances to refunds and/or compensation from your airline in cases of denied boarding, cancellation or delays to flights. Full details of these rights will be publicised at EU airports and will also be available from airlines. Please note that reimbursement in such cases is the responsibility of the airline and will not automatically entitle you to a refund of your holiday cost from us. Your right to a refund and/or compensation from us is set out in clause 7 ‘if we change your holiday’. If your airline does not comply with these rules you should complain to the Passengers Advice and Complaints team at the CAA (email: passengercomplaints@caa.co.uk website www.caa.co.uk). In March 2006 the European Commission published a list of airlines considered to be unsafe and which are therefore not permitted to fly passengers or Cargo in the EU or operate within the European airspace. This list is updated every three months and can be viewed by clicking on the website for the European Commission http://ec.europa.eu/transport/ air-ban/list_en.htm. Alternatively, should you wish to be sent a copy of the list, please contact us either by telephone or in writing. 13. TRAVEL INSURANCE You agree to our requirement: at the time of booking your holiday you either accept our travel insurance or you or your travel agent make immediate alternative arrangements with cover at least equal to our own policy. 14. SWIMMING POOLS AND OTHER FACILITIES Where a swimming pool or other facility is referred to as being available for use, such availability is at the hotelier’s discretion and is understood to be conditional upon temporary or unavoidable closure necessitated by: the hotels essential maintenance programme, accident, damage or malfunction of equipment, and in the case of swimming pools: compliance with any water conservation regulations imposed in times of drought, damage or malfunction of the mains water supply. The above are understood to be a result of force majeure and not to reflect on our failure to deliver an advertised facility. 15. ARBITRATION In the unlikely event that a complaint cannot be settled amicably between us, you may if you wish refer the matter to arbitration under a special scheme, which, though devised by arrangement with ABTA is administered quite independently (details on request or from the ABTA website www.abta.com). This is a simple method of arbitration on documents alone with restricted cost liability to the customer. The rules of the scheme provide that the application for arbitration must be made within eighteen months of the date of return from the holiday but in special circumstances it may still be offered outside of this period. The scheme does not apply to claims over £5,000 per person or £25,000 per booking, nor to claims mainly or solely in respect of injury or illness or their consequences. Alternatively, AITO’s Independent Dispute Settlement Service may be called upon by either side to bring the matter to a speedy and amicable solution. 16. PASSPORT/VISA It is the responsibility of all customers to ensure they have a valid passport and to check entry requirements such as passport validity and any required visa. In addition, you must consult your GP for advice regarding recommended medication and anti-malarial drugs before you book. 17. HOLIDAY PARTICIPATION Should anyone be refused admission to the flight or to the destination country by the airline or government authority due to the correct documentation not being in order then we are powerless to assist and cannot be held responsible. Any passengers considered being unacceptably under the influence of alcohol or drugs may be denied boarding to the aircraft or entry into the country. In these circumstances we shall consider the customer as having given notice of cancellation and be under no liability for any costs or charges incurred as a result of our doing so.
