I ta ly Italy’s unique blend of the finest art, architecture and history combined with beautiful countryside, stunning coastlines, and delicious food and wine means that we will always have an unrivalled passion for this wonderful country.
Pat Bellieni - My Italy... I have just returned from another successful trip to Venice and Florence, this time accompanying two of the newer members of the Kirker team and showing them around some of my favourite haunts. I am always delighted to go back to Venice, whatever the season; the water reflects the colour of the sky and illuminates the city in many different hues. The quality of light here is unique. We arrived on a crisp, clear, winter’s day and could see the snow-capped Dolomites framing the very distinct silhouette of my favourite destination. The arrival water taxi transfer always brings a smile to my face, I feel like a glamorous 1950’s film star as I approach my hotel over the lagoon in Kirker style. The following morning we enjoyed a walking tour with one of the Kirker guides, an experience which all three of us enjoyed – although I know the city like the back of my hand, there is always a new corner to discover or a fresh angle to see. For 2014, we will be offering all Kirker clients the opportunity to join a walking tour with an expert local guide every Tuesday, for the special price of £15 per person – complimentary for all holidays before 31 March. From Venice we took the new and very stylish Italo train service down to Florence, which takes a little over two hours. We then had the chance to wander the streets of Italy’s most immaculate Renaissance city, as well as visiting the small hilltop town of Fiesole, which is home to a new Kirker hotel this year – the charming Villa Fiesole. Although we thoroughly enjoyed the Kirker guide and Uffizi Gallery tickets, this time I also managed a little shopping... I have to admit that the Florentines do something even better than the Venetians.
New Hotels For 2014 Prices include flights, private transfers or hire car, accommodation with breakfast, Kirker Guide Notes as appropriate and the services of the Kirker Concierge. ** Please note that outdoor summer swimming pools are weather dependant (unless specified), please ask for further details **

France Although we have featured holidays to France since 1986 we were delighted that our first dedicated France brochure launch in 2013 was a resounding success. For 2014 we have further expanded our range with new hotels throughout the country and a new section dedicated to the beautiful Dordogne. One of our keenest Francophiles, Ben Williams, who visited Bordeaux and the Dordogne in the Autumn of 2013 describes his experience below. Ben is one of a number of colleagues within the Kirker reservations team who look forward to using their first hand knowledge to help you to create the perfect tailor-made itinerary.
Ben Williams - My trip to the Dordogne... We started by visiting a new hotel for Kirker: Le Saint James in the charming hilltop village of Bouliac, known as ‘the balcony of Bordeaux’. The hotel has modern, eye-catching rooms, a state-of-the-art cooking school and a Michelin-starred restaurant with breath-taking views over the Gironde river floodplain and the city beyond. The food was out of this world and to dine al fresco on the terrace in October was a real treat. We then took a hire car east, into the Dordogne, where we stayed at the charming Château des Vigiers. The region around the hotel is well known for its vineyards and the Château produces its own delicious red wine, served in both of its restaurants. Kirker clients will be accommodated in the 12th Century Château itself which is set amongst the golf course and extensive parkland. After a delicious breakfast (the chef here is meticulous about sourcing locally produced ingredients) we headed further into the Dordogne region to its principal town of Perigueux. Here we enjoyed a most informative walking tour of this pretty mediaeval town before visiting the Château de Lalande.Your hosts here are the charming Catherine and Yves and they have renovated this pretty little château to an incredibly high standard – whilst Yves prepares delicious local food with a twist which reflects his native Alsace. The charming town of Brantome on the banks of the river Dronne, otherwise know as ‘the Venice of the Perigord’ was to be our next overnight stop. Our hotel, the Moulin de l’Abbaye is the former mill that produced electricity and flour for the town. Our room here overlooked the river and the waterside terrace where we enjoyed a delicious dinner that evening. We continued our journey, visiting the lovely town of Montignac and the UNESCO World Heritage Lascaux caves. It was here that we visited the elegant Château la Fleunie. Despite the grandeur of this 12th Century castle, and its excellent facilities, it is one of the best value options for a spring holiday in the Dordogne, and it makes a perfect base for exploring the Perigord region.

P er s on a l Fav o ur i t e s Our experienced reservations team are passionate about travel, whether discovering new destinations or re-visiting familiar favourites and are keen to share their enthusiasm and knowledge for their best loved cities, hotels and sights. Here are some personal favourites chosen by a selection of the team. Prices include flights, private transfers or hire car, accommodation with breakfast, Kirker Guide Notes as appropriate and the services of the Kirker Concierge.
Alex Carey - Siena Many people think of Siena as a day trip from Florence but it really does deserve more than that. I stayed at the Grand Hotel Continental which is the only 5* deluxe hotel in the city centre. Many of the rooms have wonderful views over the Sienese rooftops towards San Domenico church or the duomo. On our first morning we ventured out of the hotel down the winding mediaeval streets when suddenly the magnificent sight of the Piazza del Campo in the shadow of the imposing “Mangia” tower opened up before us. The frescoes in the Palazzo Pubblico and the black and white marble duomo can rival anything to be found in Florence, Rome or Venice. 3 nights for the price of 2 until 30 April at the Grand Hotel Continental - price from £885, saving £175
David Lugg - Munich Munich would make even the most impassive visitors feel young at heart. On my recent trip in December I found myself marvelling at the abundance of wonderful Bavarian Christmas markets, all the while supping hot Glühwein under a gentle dusting of falling snow. And as I looked around me, I noticed that everyone was doing the same, celebrating everything that Christmas stands for, but without the rampant commercialism that a modern city often brings. Should you yearn for a winter or spring city break with authentic markets (not just at Christmas), beautiful architecture, and some of the most friendly locals I have met, then I could not think of a better place than Munich. The city also offers a wonderful and comprehensive programme of opera and concerts throughout the year - ask the Kirker Concierge for details. 3 nights at the Hotel Torbrau - price from £698
Kathryn Irons - Bilbao Despite having seen a fair bit of Spain over the years, the Basque Country had until recently remained an enigma to me. The city is now best known for the Guggenheim museum designed by Frank Gehry. Set on the river in what used to be docklands and home primarily to works by Basque artists, the building itself is as much a piece of sculpture as anything found within. The whole area was regenerated around 20 years ago, and is now also close to both Kirker hotels in Bilbao - in particular, I would recommend the Grand Hotel Domine for a room with a view of the majestic Guggenheim. Bilbao has more to offer than art though, and is one of the best areas to sample pintxos. For those lovers of tapas, think bigger, better, and even more delicious! 3 nights at the Grand Hotel Domine - price from £696, staying in an Executive room with Guggenheim view.
Monika Kiss - Malaga Usually considered solely as a gateway to the nearby coast, Malaga itself has plenty to offer. I was surprised by its magnificent architecture and the range of cultural establishments. We were lucky enough to have a great dinner in one of the oldest restaurants of the city, almost next to the Picasso family who were dining there too. They were in the city to celebrate the anniversary of the opening of the famous Picasso Museum, which proudly shows a wonderful range of the artist’s works in the city of his birth. Art aside, there are also good beaches around and comfortable hotels – we stayed in the Parador del Golfo, slightly outside the city centre but with its own private beach and golf course. 3 nights at the Parador del Golfo - price from £672
Nicky Ball - St Petersburg My first trip to Russia started with four days in St Petersburg visiting its many jewel-box palaces and galleries, all beautifully showcased against cloudless blue skies. The mind-boggling Church on the Spilled Blood and the impressively opulent Peterhof Palace with its elegant gardens were two of my three highlights… the third being my visit to the recently opened new stage at the Mariinsky theatre to see a ballet performance of Cinderella. Having enjoyed ballet for 10 years as a child, I was probably just as excited as the young girls practising their pliés in the stalls during the intervals! I was not disappointed… what a privilege. My top tip would be to book a table for a pre-performance dinner at Sadko, an authentic Russian restaurant just a few minutes’ walk away – enjoy a hearty stroganov whilst listening to live folk music. The Peterhof Palace Kirker Concierge can secure much sought-after tickets for the best seats at the Mariinsky before you travel, and would be glad to make a restaurant recommendation and book a table for dinner. Other key highlights included the astonishing Hermitage Museum which is best appreciate in the company of an expert local guide. Hotel Astoria is perfectly positioned within the “Golden Triangle” area of the city, which contains many of the essential sights, including St Isaac’s Cathedral. Please ask at time of booking for the supplement for a Superior Deluxe room with a view of St Isaac’s. 3 nights for the price of 2 until 31 March - price from £1,095, saving £150 4 nights for the price of 3 until 12 May and 1 July until 24 October - price from £1,335, saving £190. Includes Russian Visa service.

Murray Mitchell - Mallorca
Giles Binnie - Dresden
Whilst many visitors to Mallorca head straight for the coast, the capital Palma is a must see. A sunny day here is like no other; the grand majesty of the cathedral looking out over the turquoise waters of the port is breath-taking.You could get lost for hours walking along the charming paved streets, finding surprises around each corner. But this is a vibrant and lively city too and there is no shortage of enticing restaurants offering traditional paella and tapas. The boutique hotel Palacio Ca Sa Galesa, originally a Mallorcan Palace built in 1571, has now been transformed into an intimate 12 room property. Hidden down a quiet street in the heart of the old town, it is the perfect base from which to explore this bustling city.
Dresden, rather like Berlin, is a city which has been under continuous reconstruction since the destruction of World War Two. The restoration that has taken place in the centre of this university town has seen the resurrection of iconic buildings such as the Baroque Zwinger Palace, the Semper Opera house, where performances again take place (ask the Kirker Concierge to arrange tickets) and the colossal Frauenkirche. We had the pleasure of staying across the river in the beautifully furnished Bülow Palais which is situated in a residential area of the city just ten minutes’ walk from the sights of the main square. Don’t miss the famous Green Vaults which house the treasures of the Saxon kings - ask the Kirker Concierge to pre-book timed entrance tickets. 3 nights for the price of 2 until 30 April at the Bülow Palais - price from £579, saving £112
5 nights for the price of 4 for Kirker clients all year at the Palacio Ca Sa Galesa - price from £787, saving £130
Marcus Freeman - Czech Republic A 17th Century baroque château in the rolling Bohemian countryside, an hour from Prague, the delightful Château Mcely is highly recommended for a few days of relaxation after sightseeing in the city. Private gardens contain the spa pavilion, outdoor jacuzzi and a natural swimming lake. On my visit to the hotel I enjoyed the excellent Piano Nobile restaurant which serves seasonal cuisine with an Italian twist, made using local produce – dinner is best enjoyed on the terrace with views of the garden and the St George Forest beyond. 3 nights for the price of 2 at Hotel Paris, Prague (all year) & Château Mcely (until 31 March) - 6 night holiday price from £998, saving £201 Chateau Mcely
Ben Williams - Aix-en-Provence Cézanne’s home town, Aix has many excellent museums. The Granet museum in the centre of town has a collection of paintings from the famous masters of Provence, including 8 recently acquired Cézanne originals; whilst the man himself is celebrated at one of his original workshops, the Atelier Cézanne, a short drive above the town centre. On the way up to the atelier we stopped in at the hotel Villa Gallici, a patrician villa, 15 minutes’ walk from the central Cours Mirabeau, which has been the town’s most refined hotel for many years and whose garden terrace is among the best dining spots in the region. 3 nights for the price of 2 until 27 April at the Villa Gallici - price from £797, saving £238 Villa Gallici

Kelly Rogers - Slovenia I always enjoy discovering a new corner of Europe, especially one as charming yet little-visited as Slovenia. The capital Ljubljana is a delightfully manageable city for a short break, with a relaxed and elegant atmosphere, carefully restored historic buildings and some wonderful restaurants lining the river which winds through the old town centre. My favourite place to stay is the contemporary, boutique hotel Vander – with just 16 stylish, modern rooms. If you have time to stay a little longer I can highly recommend a city centre stay combined with a few nights in the countryside. The Julian Alps to the north, the Lippizaner horses in Lipica to the south west or the Relais & Châteaux properties at Otocec or Idrija are certainly worth a visit and can be combined with flights back to the UK from Zagreb, Trieste or perhaps Pula in Istria. Vander, Ljubljana **** Deluxe This contemporary hotel is the personal passion of the owners – it is one of the finest boutique design hotels in Europe. Located in the pedestrian area, just one street back from the river, it has a stylish bar and an excellent restaurant. For those who wish to eat out, there are many local bars and restaurants nearby. There are just 16 modern rooms with glass bathrooms, a rooftop summer plunge pool with solarium and a small bar which offers outstanding views. 3 night price from £529 per person
Ljubljana
Castle Otocec ***** Superior Located in a historic castle on an island in the Krka river this unique property has established itself as the discerning traveller’s favourite hotel in Slovenia. The 12th Century building has been beautifully and sympathetically restored using expert craftsmen with a great flair for combining traditional materials with striking contemporary design. Located just one hour from Ljubljana by car, guests should stay for two nights and be sure to book a table at their gastronomic restaurant. All 16 rooms have modern bathrooms and river or garden views – prices for spacious suites available on request. 3 night price from £768 per person

F urt h er A field So u t h Afric a Kirker’s Ed Coltart spent a fortnight exploring South Africa with his family last year. Here he gives a flavour of the first week in the Western Cape. After a pleasant overnight flight from a wintery London, we landed in Cape Town to bright warm sunshine, and picked up our wheels for the next 12 days. With my son Max in the back and my wife in the passenger seat we dispensed with the need for a Satnav and found our hotel, The Vineyard in the leafy and affluent suburb of Newlands, without a single wrong turn. A warm welcome greeted us and we enjoyed a delicious brunch on the terrace overlooking the beautiful gardens while our room was prepared. We were upgraded to a suite with balconies overlooking the gardens below and headed out to the pool for a refreshing dip. A veteran of this fabulous country, my wife suggested we take advantage of the clear day and climb Table Mountain, so we used our afternoon to take the cable car up, for walk around the summit, supper for Max and a ‘sundowner’ for us. After a great night’s sleep, we headed back in the car to explore the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Point and see the penguins of Boulders Beach in Simons Town. We did not expect the added bonus of being able to swim with the penguins, seeing baboons lining the roads and climbing on passing cars, and wild deer grazing in the protected Boulders Beach national park – our safari had started early it seemed! On recommendation from the Kirker Concierge, we ate that night outside at the Jonkershuis restaurant in Groot Constantia – a must for anyone staying in Cape Town. With reports of blizzards and freezing temperatures back home, we smugly continued our sightseeing in warm sunshine, enjoying an excellent lunch on Cape Town’s waterfront. After lunch we took a boat trip and tour of Robben Island. And what a highlight this turned out to be – a fascinating and informative bus tour around the island before being shown the prison buildings by a former inmate and contemporary of Nelson Mandela himself – one of the most inspiring, humbling and thought-provoking afternoons of my life. A late finish meant we ended up enjoying supper in the ‘Square’ restaurant at The Vineyard.
On Saturday we drove up to the Waterford estate near Stellenbosch where we were treated to a drive through the vineyards with two stops to taste their whites and reds before finishing up with a lesson in the art of pairing chocolate with three of their wines. A thoroughly enjoyable day in some of the most beautiful countryside. On our last day in Cape Town we took a short boat trip from Hout Bay to the seal colony which inhabits a rocky island offshore. Max wanted to go back to Boulders Beach and the penguins, which we followed with a beach-side lunch in the sun in Simons Town. Finally, we said goodbye to this beautiful hotel and headed up to the Winelands and the town of Paarl where we were to spend the next two nights overlooking the vineyards. Awaking to bright blue skies and a light cool breeze, we decided to give ourselves the morning by the pool - a reward for a busy five days of sightseeing. We booked the loveliest of picnic lunches in the grounds of the Boschendal wine estate before heading into Franschoek later, for some shopping and a browse in the town’s oldest shop ‘Oom Samie se Winkel’ followed by afternoon tea. From the Winelands, we then headed south, clinging to the beautiful coastline with breath-taking views across False Bay towards Simons Town and our old friends, the penguins. We arrived in Hermanus in time for a stroll around, and what a lovely place Hermanus is – a buzzy little resort with some fine shops, great beaches and excellent eateries. It is here that in winter, whales can be viewed close into shore. Our hotel, The Marine is fabulous – the oldest hotel in town and full of character, charm and history. Table Mountain We were given a lovely room with a terrace overlooking the gardens and the bay and enjoyed a delicious dinner at the ‘Burgundy’ restaurant, including Malva pudding – sticky toffee pudding only better – for dessert.
The Western Cape Follow in Ed’s footsteps on this week-long itinerary combining the best of South Africa’s Western Cape, from cosmopolitan Cape Town, and the Cape vineyards, to the coastal city of Hermanus where Southern Right Whales and Humpbacks can be spotted from July to November. We can create your own tailor-made itinerary, whether it is a short break in Cape Town or perhaps a longer holiday continuing on to the Garden Route and the game reserves of the Eastern Cape - ask your travel agent for details. A seven night holiday staying for four nights at The Vineyard, Cape Town and three nights at the Marine, Hermanus costs from £1,855 including flights from UK to Cape Town and private transfers throughout.

KIRKER CONCIERGE SERVICE
Time Out With Ted Kirker’s Director of Sales & Marketing shares his top tips for the perfect short break.... Each year I plan at least one trip for the whole family and for 2013 we chose an old favourite, Paris certainly worthy of regular visits and, for those who prefer to walk it is easy to achieve most objectives on foot. We set off just after Easter with the Wakelets (now 14, 16 and 18 years) staying for 3 nights at Le Tremoille - Deluxe hotels do not get better than this (see page 11 for a very special offer). Three highlights were; firstly the museum passes, saving invaluable time queuing at two favourite museums: the Rodin and Musée d’Orsay. Secondly, a 3 hour private guide, which I had booked (after encouragement from my ‘lifestyle manager’ - the Kirker Concierge, Charlie Dyson), to introduce my children to the city - they still talk about it now and it is vital if you wish encourage children to develop an appetite for cultural short breaks... but don’t forget to include a coffee and coke stop. Talking of appetites, the third highlight was a lunch at Le Train Bleu restaurant (thank you again, Charlie) apart from excellent food & wine, the service, style and ambience could not have been better and ensured that we all snoozed peacefully on the Eurostar home. We are already planning our short break for 2014 and will certainly be consulting the Kirker Concierge to ensure that I remember to pre-book all the key elements that transform the experience into a wonderful and very relaxing Kirker holiday.
No holiday is complete without consulting the Kirker Concierge in our London office to help you to plan one or two extra items in advance. We highly recommend a private excursion in the company of a local expert and the Kirker Concierge can also help with opera and concert tickets, restaurant recommendations, tickets for sporting events and museum and gallery entrance. Tickets are normally delivered to your hotel prior to arrival at no extra cost.
NEW ADDED VALUE FOR 2014
Kirker includes a wide range of additional benefits in many of our top cities. This year we are delighted to offer new extras including a Granada Card, which offers entrance to the Alhambra Palace and a Berlin ‘Museuminsel’ card which allows visitors into the great institutions on Museum Island such as the Pergamon Museum. All Kirker holidays to Prague now include a private walking tour which reveals the fascinating history of this beautiful mediaeval city. We are also arranging a new Venice Walking Tour every Tuesday at a cost of only £15 for Kirker clients, and complimentary until 31 March – a wonderful way to see the city from the perspective of an expert local.
2014 CULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS 2014 promises to be a memorable year, with several significant landmarks and a number of new exhibitions. Whether your interest is in art, history or music, there are a series of major events taking place across Europe from the Centenary of the start of World War One to the 400th anniversary of the death of El Greco.
Bon voyage.
WWI Centenary
This year marks the centenary of the outbreak of WWI, which Kirker will commemorate with a series of events. We will be organising a study weekend in Oxford on 4 July, which will feature talks and music from a range of experts, and we will be travelling to Turkey and Flanders on two escorted holidays – see page 18 for more details. For those who wish to visit the sites associated with the conflict independently we can create a tailor-made itinerary.
El Greco
The Cretan-born master died in 1614, and the 400 year anniversary will be celebrated extensively in Spain, his adopted home. There will be special exhibitions at Madrid’s Prado Museum from June and in Toledo, where he spent much of his career, from March.
