Verona Opera Festival This world renowned opera festival has been held in Verona’s spectacular Roman Arena every summer since 1913. Opera lovers gather to experience extravagant productions and memorable performances in unique surroundings with the ancient arena as a backdrop and night sky above.

Kimberly Fitzgibbon, reservations consultant - The Verona Opera Festival Last summer I visited Verona during the famous summer Opera Festival for the first time, and it was an unforgettable experience. We stayed at the Villa Cordevigo, between Verona and the shores of Lake Garda, and an excellent location for those who wish to explore both city centre and peaceful countryside. In the summer the rural location provides a welcome escape from the city centre, and the hotel itself is surrounded by mature gardens, an inviting pool area, and a tranquil atmosphere. While we could easily have spent the remainder of the trip enjoying the sunshine by the swimming pool, indulging in the cuisine, and strolling through the gardens, we eventually had to pull ourselves away and head into the heart of Verona. I was struck by the idea that people had been coming here to watch entertainment since the Arena’s construction in 30 AD. Today one can easily picture how it would have looked in ancient times - a façade of white and pink marble and seats for 30,000 spectators. Seeing the opera in the open air in that ancient arena is a magical experience - and as we relished Shakespeare's story of Romeo and Juliet retold by Gounod in the very city where the fictional lovers’ drama unfolded, I couldn't help but think that this was something remarkable. Our seats on the Numbered Steps allowed for a fantastic view and for those looking for an opera experience, they are a good choice. For true opera aficionados however, the Gold Sector stalls is the place to be. The advice of the Kirker Concierge is crucial to make sure you make the most of the experience – not just in terms of the seats, but also to arrange a pre-opera dinner at a recommended local restaurant.

Close to Lake Garda and just half an hour from Verona,Villa Cordevigo is a handsome country hotel with 23 bedrooms in a 16th Century Venetian villa. There is a chapel dating from the 1400s, a spectacular summer swimming pool, an impressive spa and chef Giuseppe D’Aquino’s excellent Michelin-starred restaurant, Oseleta. The surrounding countryside is home to famous vineyards, ancient castles and Romanesque churches.

The De Rome is located in the heart of Berlin, just off the Unter den Linden and not far from the Brandenburg Gate. It has 146 bedrooms, a restaurant serving Italian cuisine, and the ‘Bebel’ bar with its excellent views over the famous Bebelplatz. The Savoy stands on the Piazza della Repubblica, in the centre of Florence and has been completely refurbished. Its traditional Italian exterior reflects the turn-of-the-century period in which it was built – but there are many Rocco Forte individual touches to lift this hotel above the norm. The public rooms and the 102 bedrooms have been beautifully decorated in a modern, contemporary style with typically Florentine colours. Fine meals are served both in the hotel restaurant ‘L’Incontro’ and alfresco on the terrace; there is also a bar.

Alex Carey

Kelly Rogers - Hotel Glockenhof (4* Superior), Zurich I recently enjoyed a wonderful short break in Zurich, and was pleasantly surprised by this attractive city. I highly recommend a private guide (speak to the Kirker Concierge who would be delighted to arrange this), as there are many ornate guild houses, and a collection of 1,224 decorative drinking fountains, which are easily missed without the guidance of a local expert. Armed with my Swiss Pass – a handy rail pass which we can book for you in advance, I also ventured into the heart of the Bernese Oberland, onwards and upwards (thanks to four cable cars) to the Schilthorn. Made famous as the setting for the James Bond film, ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’, its rotating restaurant offers 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains. 3 night price from £998

Nicky Ball The Grand (5* Deluxe), Amsterdam

- Borgo Scopeto Relais (4* Deluxe) I have been to Tuscany several times now, and my favourite time of year is undoubtedly the spring. Many hotels have excellent offers at this time of year and the weather can be wonderful even in April. I can think of nothing better than enjoying a local wine in a Tuscan garden with spectacular views over the rolling countryside. The Chianti region around Siena not only makes some of the most famous wines but is home to pretty mediaeval towns such as San Gimignano and Siena itself is the perfect place to enjoy winding mediaeval streets and a delicious lunch in the famous Piazza del Campo where the Palio horse race takes place twice a year. 4 nights for the price of 3 from 1 April 11 June & 17 - 31 August - price from £689, saving £105

Sarah Jones

Ignacio Foley -

- Riad La Maison Bleue, Fez

My very first trip with Kirker was to Amsterdam back in 2001 and I was interested to see the changes over the past 13 years. Reassuringly the city was much as I remember, but the city’s art museums are more impressive than ever. With the reopening of the iconic Rijksmuseum and the neighbouring Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam has two of the most impressive collections in the world, and a short train journey away is the beautifully renovated Mauritshuis in The Hague, which is also home to a spectacular collection of Dutch masters. After a long day of sightseeing it is wonderful to relax back at The Grand Hotel. Its Garden Terrace becomes a tranquil, candle-lit haven in the evening where you can enjoy a cold beer and some ‘bitterballen’ – typical Dutch (and very moreish) meat croquettes.

Arriving in Fez, I felt as though I had been transported back in time. The old medina still exists as it did in the 9th Century – narrow winding streets with local markets, intricate and beautiful mosaics and secret rooftop cafés, from which to watch the bustling scenes below with a cool drink. Without the advice of a local you are almost certain to miss things, so all Kirker trips to Fez include a morning in the company of a private guide, who will reveal hidden gems such as the University of al-Qarawiyyin, one of the oldest universities in existence, which is covered in beautiful carved cedar wood and mosaics. Further afield, the 3rd Century Roman ruins of Volubilis, and the Imperial city of Meknes are both within reach of a day trip from Fez.

3 nights for the price of 2 until 31 March price from £696, saving £184

3 night price from £549

1 April onwards - 3 night price from £949

Al Bustan Palace (5* Deluxe), Oman On my most recent visit to Oman, I decided to explore some of the country’s fascinating history. Compared to many of its neighbours in the region, Oman has a variety of well-preserved historic sites including historic forts at Bahla and Jabrin, not to mention Nizwa, the old capital known for its silver souk and round fort, which was one of the highlights for me. As we approached, we negotiated the market stalls piled high with sweets made out of date syrup and almonds in all varieties, before our guide explained that they used date syrup (hot) as a weapon! I can highly recommend climbing the 60 steps or so to reach the top as the views of the surrounding palms and hills are simply spectacular. If you are considering an escape for some winter sun, look no further than Oman, but don’t forget to ask the Kirker Concierge about a day trip to Nizwa. 7 nights for the price of 5 from 1 - 30 May - price from £1,539, saving £280

Pat Bellieni - Château la Chenevière (4* Deluxe), Normandy Our Saturday morning voyage from Portsmouth to Caen turned out to be a highlight of my recent trip to Normandy. I spent the time shopping, catching up on my favourite book with a drink at the bar followed by a surprisingly delicious lunch of fresh crevettes, smoked salmon terrine and a delicious glass of Chablis – and of course all tables include a fantastic sea view. I can thoroughly recommend the Château la Chenevière as a base from which to visit Normandy’s landing beaches, nearby Bayeux and the delightful countryside. Dinner in the château offers outstanding service and gourmet dining at very reasonable prices. The Kirker Concierge can book a table – and, most importantly, arrange for an expert private guide to ensure you make the most of the many sites and museums devoted to the Normandy Landings. 3 nights for the price of 2 from 1 March - 2 April - price from £469, saving £140 4 nights for the price of 3 from 3 April - 30 September - price from £669, saving £160

Time Out With Ted Kirker’s Director of Sales & Marketing shares his top tips for the perfect short break and domestic harmony... I have two key travel objectives for 2015 – firstly, a visit to Madrid in February for a 3 night half term break. My daughter, Mary, is taking her Spanish A-level in the summer, so 3 days being immersed in Spanish food, wine, art and architecture would be the perfect distraction from revision…whilst at the same time helping with her quest for the elusive A grade results. The fact that her devoted parents are slightly obsessed with the Prado (El Greco is a favourite) and Thyssen (… why don’t more museums display works in chronological sequence?) art galleries, and have a passion for tapas at La Trucha in Plaza Santa Ana is purely coincidental. Naturally, the Kirker Concierge will arrange to treat us to a private walking tour with an expert guide – and a delicious dinner at a recommended restaurant. Secondly, I plan a child-free early spring break to Morocco with the long suffering Mrs Wake. The plan is to combine a few days in Marrakech with 3 nights in the Atlas Mountains. I am ashamed to say that this idea was first inked-into my wish-list about 20 years ago – what a pity I didn’t consult an expert Kirker consultant at the time! However, following a recent whistle-stop work trip to Marrakech, the General Manager of the Kirker local agent (the charming Mr Ali Kasmi), extracted a promise from me that I would return to Marrakech with my wife before the end of April. I now feel 100% confident that this public declaration will ensure that neither Ali nor Mrs Wake will be disappointed – and look forward to a much needed short break holiday…

Southern Africa

From the sophisticated restaurants and fine hotels of Cape Town’s Victoria & Alfred Waterfront to the rolling vineyards of the Winelands and the dramatic scenery of the Kruger National Park, South Africa has a wide range of experiences which will tempt the most discerning traveller. As we endure the British winter, Southern Africa enjoys its summer, making this the perfect destination to combine some winter sunshine with a relaxing city break, a visit to the Boer War battlefields or a quest for the famous ‘Big Five’. Please speak to your travel agent for advice and a tailor-made quotation, or for a copy of our dedicated brochure.

THE KIRKER CONCIERGE The Kirker Concierge is available to all Kirker clients at no extra charge to help with every detail of your holiday before your travel to make sure you make the most of your short break. • • • • •

Our exclusive Kirker Guide Notes contain our favourite trattoria, brasseries and tapas bars, but it is essential to consult the Kirker Concierge for recommendations before you travel. If you are celebrating a special occasion, why not ask the Concierge to reserve a table at an exceptional gastronomic restaurant such as ‘La Terazza’ in Rome, or ‘Enoteca Pinchiorri’ in Florence? There is no better way to understand a new destination than with the help of a local expert. We include a private guided walking tour with all Kirker holidays to Prague, Marrakech and Fes, whilst in Venice we offer a shared walking tour for the special price of £10 per person (winter) and £20 per person (summer). Wherever you are travelling, please ask about private excursions with one of our wonderful local guides. In many Kirker destinations we now include entrance tickets for museums such as Florence’s Uffizi Gallery and the Prado in Madrid. For those who have been before, we would be delighted to offer an alternative, arrange additional tickets or book entrance to a special exhibition. The Kirker Concierge has access to tickets for some of the most prestigious theatres, concert halls and opera houses in Europe. Call for expert advice on the best seats and the latest schedules. For those who prefer sporting events, the Concierge is also able to assist with booking football tickets, Formula One passes or even rugby tickets for the Six Nations this February.

We are proud to be a Preferred Partner of British Airways. For spring 2015, we are delighted to announce a range of new BA routes including direct flights from London to Bilbao and Seville in Spain, Funchal in Madeira and the Mediterranean destinations of Crete, Sardinia, Bodrum and Split. Speak to your independent travel agent for details of the latest special offers and upgrade supplements for Club Europe – from as little as £50 per person each way.

This is just a small selection from the wide range of special offers available. To request a brochure please speak to your independent travel agent.
