hello Well what an exciting two months it has been since I launched mamamag. When I decided to start this little magazine I knew it would work, because I knew the mums of Bayside had never had anything like it before. But boy did it go well beyond my expectations. What a fun ride! Within days of distribution (which was amazing fun in itself, meeting fabulous people at local businesses and children’s services), I started getting phone calls from people wanting to get involved. I’ve met with many local businesses and services, all that recognise mamamag as the perfect spot to advertise to you, the local mums of Bayside. I’ve had coffee with numerous fabulous local mums, all with a small business or story to tell. It’s so encouraging seeing great women starting their own businesses, just as I have done and I plan to bring you stories about them over the evolution of mamamag, in the hope they may inspire you too. This month I met Corinne who has started a fabulous little boutique market in Brighton called Brighton Bazaar (page 32), an amazing single mother, Jodie, whose new toy shop in Glenhuntly only stocks goods either made or sourced by local Melbourne mums (page 8). I’ve become involved in the monthly mums morning held at The Deck Brighton (page 42), which is like a glamorous mothers group, in an awesome setting, with the best lemon slice you will ever taste! Who could resist? Whilst I knew mamamag would work well as a local advertising platform for Bayside businesses, I wasn’t sure what the readers would think of the magazine as a whole, but judging by the feedback I have had on Facebook, we are on to a winner. “Just picked up a copy of mamamag! Love it! Great idea and look forward to reading more, Congratulations!” - Rebecca “Love the new mamamag, just finished reading it. Congratulations” - Jarrod Yes, that second one was even from a man!! Thanks Jarrod. Stay tuned for our Daddy issue in September, celebrating Father’s Day! So mamas, keep sending me your feedback. If there is a topic you’d love to see covered, drop us a line via email or Facebook. And don’t forget to enter our August Facebook competition to win an amazing spa pack from Uspa. x

stop the rot... August 4-11 is National Dental Health Week, so what better time to ask yourself “am I doing everything I can to look after my little one’s teeth?” Most people think that sweets and lollies are the only foods to blame for tooth decay (and they are the main culprits). But, bacteria not only use the sugar in sweets to create acid, they can also use any food that contains sugars and other carbohydrates – foods like pasta, fruit, potato chips and snack bars. It’s not practical to cut out these foods completely but if you can cut down on them and don’t snack in-between meals it gives your teeth a much better chance of staying healthy. Healthy Eating for Babies and Toddlers

Healthy Eating for Older Kids

Follow these simple tips and your baby will have the best chance of avoiding tooth decay in their baby teeth and then in their permanent teeth.

The main thing to remember with older kids is that they often like to eat a lot of sweets and fizzy drinks and they often snack on them throughout the day which means their teeth are under constant attack.

• Don’t settle your child to sleep with a bottle of milk, soft drink or fruit juice. If they like to suck on something, give them a dummy or a bottle of water. • If your baby has a feed before bed, gently wipe down their gums or teeth with a clean, moistened cloth before putting them to bed. • Avoid giving your baby or toddler frequent snacks. Stick to their main meals. • Even healthy foods like bread, pasta, crackers and milk contain high amounts of sugar. This is why it’s important to make sure you clean your child’s teeth and gums morning and night.

Although it will be difficult at first, the best way to put this right is to get them to only eat at main meal times and encourage them to eat foods from the ‘healthy’ list below if they do need a snack during the day.

Did you know that it takes two to three minutes to brush your teeth properly but most people only spend 30 seconds or less?

Visiting the dentist regularly for a check-up is something that can easily be forgotten or postponed but is essential in maintaining healthy teeth and gums. If your child hasn’t seen a dentist in over twelve months – book them in for a check-up and clean and polish. Your dentist will be able to advise on this. Prevention is always better than cure and regular dental examinations can catch any problems early and help maintain a healthy mouth. Remember, children who have regular dental check-ups tend to have fewer dental problems.

For more tips & information visit www.dentalhealthweek.com.au 6

teaching kids to Brush Even though baby teeth fall out and are replaced, any decay at this stage can still affect the development of your child’s permanent teeth. To give them the best chance of avoiding tooth decay, follow these five simple tips:

1. Start cleaning teeth early

3. Use the right amount of toothpaste

As soon as the first tooth appears start by wiping with a clean, damp cloth every day. When more teeth come through, switch to a small, soft toothbrush – but no toothpaste. You can sit your child on your knee, facing away from you, supporting their head with your arm.

We need fluoride to fight cavities but if children under six swallow too much toothpaste it can cause white spots on their permanent teeth. To avoid this, use only a small amount of toothpaste (about the size of a pea). Teach your child to spit out the toothpaste and to rinse well after brushing. You can get milder, low fluoride toothpastes for kids under six.

Begin using toothpaste with fluoride when your child is 2 years old. You can use a fluoride toothpaste earlier if your child’s doctor or dentist recommends it.

2. Supervise brushing Brush your child’s teeth twice a day until your child has the skill to handle the toothbrush alone. This could be around age six or possibly a little earlier. When they start brushing let them do their own teeth then brush their teeth straight afterwards to make sure they didn’t miss anything, particularly along the gum line.

4. Introduce flossing Once any two of your child’s teeth touch each other, it’s time to start flossing. The tiny gaps between teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach make a perfect hiding place for food particles and bacteria. Try and do this once a day.

5. If they don’t like brushing… If it’s proving difficult to teach your child how to clean their teeth, ask your Dentist to show them, at their next checkup.

There are also things you can do at home to make teeth cleaning more fun for kids. • Allow your child to brush your teeth first, then, get them to try their own and finish off by brushing their teeth for them to make sure they didn’t miss anything. • Talk to them while you’re brushing, telling them what you’re going to do next. • If they’re reluctant to let you brush, get them to roar like a lion and open their mouth really wide so you can reach the back teeth. For the front teeth, they can pretend to growl like a tiger. • Get your child to brush their favourite doll or teddy bear’s teeth before you brush theirs • To make sure your child brushes for long enough, brush along to a favourite song • Invent some ‘nasties’ for your child to get rid of – fight ‘plaque monsters’ or hunt for ‘molar mutants’ to get them to brush all the hard to reach areas and protect their teeth. 7

MUM’S SECRET IS OUT For single mum Jodie Seidner, the secret to happiness is doing something she loves and being able to spend time with her 16 month old son Benjamin at the same time. And where better to do that than in a toy shop.

work and determination! Soon 5 contributing mums grew to 20 and just a month in from opening it is already drawing a loyal following of local families coming to shop, play and enjoy.

A self confessed ‘market mum’, with a background selling children’s books, Jodie discussed her initial idea with her 40 strong mothers group and then put a shout out on a Melbourne Mothers and Babies Facebook group. Here she soon discovered that there were plenty of other Melbourne mums around that made kids toys and children’s products but had no real platform to get them out there. So began Jodie’s journey creating ‘The Secret Toy Garden’, a shop by mums for mums. Every product in the shop is either made by a Melbourne mum or supplied by a mum’s business.

The shop stocks gorgeous hand made toys, wooden puzzles, sensory items, clips and jewellery, babies clothes and books.

This cute and quirky shop with hand painted wall murals, fake grass floors and a fantastic play section for the kids, was set up in just one month on no budget, but instead with hard

8

The shop is not just a shopping destination; they also offer Hebrew and English music sessions and story times, craft sessions, drama classes and photography portrait sessions. Succeed or not, Jodie is not worried. In her mind she has succeeded already, with her son happy and many Melbourne mums benefiting in the process. Pop down for a visit at 1213 Glenhuntly Road, Glenhunty or visit them on Facebook. Just search for The-Secret-Toy-Garden. And if you are a mum with a product you’d love to market, PM Jodie via Facebook!

Chicken Lasagne

Serves: 6 Prep time: 30 mins Cook time: 60 mins Method: Preheat the oven to 200°C:

Ingredients: 350g Love Pollo Rotisserie Roasted chicken 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 clove garlic, peeled and finely chopped 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced 100g of mushrooms, brushed and sliced 2 tablespoons tomato purée 1 teaspoon dried basil (or 1 tablespoon of fresh basil) 400g can of chopped tomatoes (no salt added) 600ml milk 1 bay leaf 1 small onion, peeled and chopped 1 clove garlic, whole 50g unsalted butter 50g plain flour 12 dried lasagne sheets 50g mature cheddar, grated 50g Parmigiano Reggian, grated Cook’s Tip: Serve with a Love Pollo salad - Kale & Quinoa or Beetroot, Spinach & Feta! 16

To make the sauce, brown the onion and garlic in 1 tablespoon of oil for 5-6 minutes until soft. Increase the heat then add the pepper and mushrooms and fry until golden. Add the Love Pollo Rotisserie Roasted chicken, tomato purée and basil and stir to combine. Add the chopped tomatoes and simmer for 5 minutes until thickened. Remove from the heat and leave to cool slightly. Meanwhile make the Béchamel sauce: Pour the milk into a saucepan, add the bay leaf, garlic and onion and bring to a simmer. Cook gently for 15 minutes then pass through a sieve into a jug. Melt the butter in a separate saucepan. Add the flour, stirring to a thick paste. Cook the mixture at low heat for 1-2 minutes. Gradually whisk in the infused milk, bring to the boil and cook until you have a thick white sauce. Spread one third of the Love Pollo Rotisserie Roasted chicken (Pollo) sauce over the bottom of a lasagne dish and cover with a layer of lasagne sheets. Pour a little of the Béchamel over the pasta then repeat the layering, finishing with a final layer of Béchamel. Sprinkle the cheddar and parmesan over the top then bake for 30 minutes until golden and bubbling. Set aside to rest for 5 minutes before serving.

staying healthy this winter 3 things that reduce your immunity… and the easy fixes. Your immune system is a wondrous thing. A strong immune system protects you from all manner of illness - but when it is compromised, you are left susceptible to every bout of cold, flu, and gastro doing the rounds. So what are the major factors that decrease your immunity, and what simple steps can you take to keep yourself and your family healthy this winter?

1. Stress

2. Sugar Although sweet treats send your taste buds to dizzying heights, they also have a profoundly negative impact on your immunity. Research shows that after people consume 8 tablespoons of sugar - the equivalent to 2 cans of soft drink, a cupcake, or a handful of lollies - their immune response plummets by a whopping 40% for up to 5 hours. The Fix:

Immunity decreases significantly during times of stress, leaving you vulnerable to illness and disease. But the reality is that almost everybody experiences either acute situational stress or on going chronic stress– so what can you do to mitigate the damaging effects of stress on your immune system? The Fix: In an ideal world you would simply remove the stress from your life - but for most people, this isn’t always achievable. And while we know that practices like yoga and meditation promote an improved sense of wellbeing, what do you do when life is so hectic that you can’t see your way clear to meditate? Laugh! A good laugh boosts your immune system, increases the flow of oxygen to your heart and lungs, reduces pain, and floods feel good chemicals into your body. Whether you tickle your funny bone by sharing a laugh with loved ones or by watching a funny movie, get in a good chuckle on a daily basis to boost your immunity and your mood.

Don’t be fooled in to thinking it’s only soft drinks that contain a lot of sugar - be wary of drinks that are marketed as ‘healthy’. Your average apple juice has the equivalent of 6 teaspoons of sugar, whilst sports drinks contain about 7 teaspoons of sugar. Instead go for water and flavour it with a squeeze of orange juice or a few sprigs of mint and a slice of lime.

3. Vitamin D Deficiency Vitamin D not only boosts your immunity, but also improves your mood and contributes to healthy bone density – so what do you do during the winter months, when it is easy to become deficient in Vitamin D? The Fix: Simple Vitamin D boosters include getting out into the winter sunshine every day for 10 minutes, having a teaspoon of cod liver oil a day, and eating plenty of oily fish. If you are deficient in Vitamin D–which a simple test from your GP will identify– targeted supplements can help to restore your Vitamin D levels.

3 immune-boosting supplements for children: Probiotics – Maintains a healthy digestive system, which is responsible for 70% of immune response. Cod Liver Oil – Naturally rich in Vitamin D and A, which work wonders for healthy immunity. Zinc + Vitamin C –This vitamin and mineral combo will not only boost immunity, but will also help with wound healing and skin conditions. HEALTHYMAMA Hydration is vital for pregnant or breastfeeding women Every little cell, tissue and organ in your body needs water. Your body depends on water for survival. Staying on top of your daily hydration needs will see you enjoying better health and functioning more optimally in your activities of daily living.

How much water should I drink everyday? Recommendations vary considerably but in reality everyone is different and therefore what is adequate for one might not be for another. The average is about 1.5 litres. Typical signs of dehydration include; a dry mouth, fatigue, headaches, dizziness, darker urine or in more extreme cases little or no urine. During the summer months, fluid intake needs to be increased in order to avoid these symptoms. Hot humid weather can have a significant impact on your hydration levels. And just because its winter, doesn’t mean you don’t need to drink. It’s always important! Water is the best option for staying hydrated, however there are numerous drinks and foods that can help provide the water you need. Always be mindful that drinks such as fruit juice, soft drink and sports drinks can all add significant calories to your diet. It is advisable to keep these to a minimum. Some fresh fruit and vegetables may also contribute to your hydration level as they have high water content.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding Weight increases on average 12kg during pregnancy, and most of this added weight, 6 to 9 L, is water, because… 1. The plasma volume increases (mainly water) 2. 85% of the placenta is water 3. The foetus itself is 70-90% water To ensure adequate water intake during pregnancy, it is recommended an increase of 300 mL per day compared to the normal intake for non-pregnant women, taking total adequate water intake (from food and fluids) to 2.3 L, or approximately 1.85 L/ day from fluids. During lactation, water intake needs to compensate for the loss of water through milk production. Milk is made of 88% water, so it is therefore recommended that lactating women increase their water by about 700 mL/day, meaning an adequate intake of 2.7 L/day (from food and drink), or approximately 2.2 L/day from fluids.

A few tips for staying well hydrated: Keep a bottle of water with you at all times. Aim to refill it a couple of times over the course of the day. Increase your water intake when exercising. Make sure you drink sufficient amount before, during and after your workout. Include a glass of water at all meals.

Adding a slice of lemon or lime to water may assist in making it more appealing and thereby encourage you to drink more frequently. Include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet on a daily basis. The high water content will contribute significantly to your overall hydration levels.

Is Your Child’s Spine in Line? How many of us have taken our children to have their teeth, ears or eyes checked? Most of us probably have. Have you taken your children to a chiropractor to have his or her spine checked? If you never have, I wonder why not? It’s probably because you didn’t know that you should.

Any interference or blockage to these messages stops you from controlling and healing yourself 100%. It’s a scientifically proven fact that this lowers your level of health. Our mission is to remove these areas of interference, enhancing your ability to be healthy.

When people see that children are off to the Chiropractor for their regular check-up they frequently ask, “Why do they need adjustments? They don’t have bad backs do they?” The answer is invariably, no, most kids don’t have “bad backs” but they certainly do have a high likelihood of accumulating physical, chemical and emotional stresses from their environment on their spine and nerve system as they grow.

Youngsters suffer numerous accidents and falls while learning to walk, riding a bike, or even while jumping, running around or participating in sport. But after their tears have dried, underlying injuries could go undetected.

Your child should have a chiropractic examination as soon after birth as possible. Spinal trauma to an infant’s or child’s spine can occur during the birth process as well as from any number of tumbles while learning to crawl, sit up or walk. Your child’s spine grows almost 50% in length during that first year (that’s the equivalent of a six-footer growing to nine feet in just 12 months!). It’s this kind of tremendous growth and developmental change, which makes continued chiropractic examinations so important in the early stages of your child’s life. If you remember how your body works – you will recall that you control and heal yourself. This all happens through your Nerve System. For you to be healthy you need 100% of the messages from your Brain to flow down your Spinal Cord and along your Nerves to every part of your body – to every cell, tissue, organ, muscle and gland.

Our goal is to shift the community’s focus away from sickness care towards true health care through appropriate chiropractic care and education and to advocate healthy lifestyle choices including a healthy Nerve System, good nutrition, proper rest and relaxation, exercise and attention to emotional wellbeing. In Chiropractic we believe it’s much more important to optimize health and wellbeing than wait until some illness occurs. Through regular adjustments, as well as awareness on proper diet, exercise and posture, Chiropractic can help you raise a child whose body is structurally and functionally sound. Regular Chiropractic spinal exams can provide corrective and preventive care for your son or daughter and peace of mind for you. By Dr. Alan Corin, Chiropractor Chiro-Works Bayside

Fossil Making

from their new studio in Cheltenham.

holiday programs for the kids.

Let the kids create their very own fossils with things they can find around the house. Then turn them into original funky necklaces. Instructions Mix water, baking soda and cornflour in the saucepan and stir over a medium to high heat. The mixture will thicken up quickly. (If 5 mins in, your mixture is not thickening turn the heat up). Once your mixture is thick like mashed potato, remove from the heat. Let it cool down just until you can easily touch it. Spoon onto baking paper, wrap up and put into the fridge for 10mins to cool.

Materials needed: • ¾ cup of water • 1 cup baking soda • ½ cup cornflour • baking tray • oven • spoon • saucepan • rolling pin • milk / juice bottle lid (or anything small and round) • various plastic animals, beads, buttons, Lego men • skewer • wool

34

Place a piece of baking paper onto table. Roll out your mixture approximately 0.5cm thick. Using your circle cutter (lid) cut out some circles. Carefully push your animal shapes into the circles. Using a skewer put a hole in the top and place onto a baking tray. Once you have made all your shapes place tray in the preheated oven (170 degrees). Depending on the thickness of your shapes they should take between one hour and one and a half hours, turn them at least once during this time. They should feel hard to touch. Be patient, you don’t want them to crack in too hot an oven. Hang them on some bright wool, and they are good to go!

Why Do Children Do What They Do? Being a parent can sometimes be overwhelming. Often parents can feel confused as to what is occurring for their child and wonder ‘why do children do what they do?’ The world of children and the world of adults can seem miles apart. Adults may struggle to truly understand children, their behaviours and how to guide them on a daily basis as they grow and make their way in the world. Cosmos Child was designed for this purpose, as a communication tool for parents to bridge the gap in understanding and encourage our children to reach their highest potential. Cosmos Child is both an energetic healing modality and complete philosophy on childhood wellbeing created by Dr. Maxine Therese. Dr. Therese has researched children’s wellbeing and needs for decades and formulated a new needs model for children based on the chakra’s. Cosmos Child recognizes that children have seven foundational needs that should be supported and affirmed. These needs are: 1. The need to be safe and secure. 2. The need to feel. 3. The need to act. 4. The need to love. 5. The need to speak. 6. The need to see. 7. The need to know. When these needs are not met the child’s body and energetic systems become imbalanced.

Dr Therese says “these imbalances manifest as the most common health, behavioural and emotional issues we see in childhood today. As a trained certified Cosmos Child practitioner, I use a kinesiology muscle test to read the energies in the child’s body, mind and spirit to diagnose any imbalance in regard to the child’s symptoms. In this way I am able to access information at a subconscious level and bring forth memories, emotions and other experiences which are causing any given imbalance or stress. Once the issue is understood in a way that is meaningful to the child, their natural balance and wellbeing is restored. From my personal experience of working as a practitioner in my private practice, I see how Cosmos Child offers parents a new way of relating to their children, which deepens their bonds, connection, and understanding of one another. Cosmos Child places emphasis on the importance of teaching children how to connect and understand their own emotional life as a key aspect of healthy development.

Dr. Therese says “If we can assist children to understand and value their feelings, unique sensitivities and foundational needs, we can offer them a way to stay connected to their inner knowing as well as their inner source of wellbeing” I believe our children are our greatest gifts and teachers. I feel it is an honour to work with parents and their children and assist them in their journey through life. When we become aware that children’s symptoms are a direct reflection of what they are experiencing in their immediate environments and affecting their emotional life we are empowered to make changes that realign them with their optimal health and wellbeing. If you feel you and your child would benefit from a private consultation I will be offering Mamamag readers a special introductory offer of a $80 1 hour treatment and a free Children’s Wellbeing Chart. THE WRITE START! Learning to write takes time, but there are many things your child can do to develop this skill even before they hold a pencil. Here are Kinderschool’s Top Five Tips for getting your pre-schooler ready to write!

1 2

3 4 5

Use LOWER CASE letters - This helps to model the correct letter formation. Even though capital letters are easier to write, when your child starts school they will need to learn the lower case so it’s best to teach them early. Only use capitals for the beginning of their name. Make it TACTILE - Draw a letter on a sheet of paper and use sticky dots, pasta, buttons, play doh etc. to stick on in the writing direction. Try finger tracing it with them a few times before they begin. By using finger paint, shaving cream or sand your child can practice writing freely, without the frustration of getting it wrong. You can always smooth it over and try again! If you don’t want so much mess, whiteboards are also a great option.

TRACING - When they are ready to hold a pencil and attempt to write on paper, start by drawing the letter in dots and have your child practise tracing first. You can use a dotted font on the computer to print out letters (or their name) in large type. Make it MEANINGFUL - When you are teaching your child to write a particular letter, talk about the sound it makes at the same time. If your are teaching your child their name, make sure they understand that you must write it from left to right and all on the one line!

BE POSITIVE - Praise all attempts and encourage your child to have a try. The more confidence they have, the more likely they are to want to learn to write. If they are not interested, don’t push it.

And remember, it’s very important to make sure children have developed their fine motor skills sufficiently before expecting them to be able to hold a pencil correctly and start to write. For more information about your pre-schooler’s literacy development, speak to your child’s Kinder teacher, maternal & child health nurse or contact Kinderschool to discuss enrolling in a suitable class.

Free mums & Bubs morning Creating mamamag has given me the chance to meet so many great local businesses and services that Bayside has to offer. But this one is especially good and even better it’s free! Held on the first Tuesday of the month is a free mum’s morning at The Deck Brighton. In the gorgeous private function room out the back (where the kids can run around freely without the worry of upsetting cafe patrons), like minded mums (with their babies and young children) can get together, share stories, sip a coffee (and the best lemon slice I’ve ever tasted) and just enjoy a lovely morning out of the house. The Deck do a fabulous coffee and they even put on free delicious fruit and cheese platters to make us feel spoilt! It’s also a hub for some small local businesses, mamamag included, who can come along and show off their wares. Every month the delightful Susie from Little Party Faces provides

42

free face painting and activities for the kids. She does an amazing job and leaves you free to enjoy your coffee and chat whilst the littlies are amused. They’ve also had ‘I Want Chocolate’ who sell great little hand made chocolate goods and the cute Little Turtle Baby range is on display so you can stock up on baby gifts while you enjoy your morning tea. I’ve met lots of lovely local mothers, shared stories and had a laugh. I even found some other mums that have 3yo daughters who are also going through the ‘my way or the highway’ phase (thank god it’s not just me!). So come along next time, alone, with a friend, or bring your whole mother’s group. Everyone is welcome. It’s a lovely morning out! The Deck Brighton. 212 Bay Street Brighton. 9.30-11am.
