free Bayside fun for the Bayside mum 1
Welcome Welcome to the first issue of mamamag! We are so thrilled to be here and we hope you join us for the ride! I started mamamag as a local platform for parents and small businesses to get their word out there. To create something fun to read whilst you drink your coffee with your toddler hanging off your leg. To help families find out about exciting new events, community projects, products and places to visit in the Bayside area. And finally to create something clever to help our local businesses promote themselves locally! I’m a local Bayside mum to my two little cherubs (or devils depending on the day). I’m also a local small business owner and a graphic designer with a love for everything printed. So mamamag comes out of my passion for all of the above. It’s not an online blog (there are plenty of them), it is a printed monthly magazine designed for you to sit back and read and enjoy (if only the kids would give you 5 minutes to yourself!). But I’m not in this alone. mamamag is also a community that we want you to be a part of. That way we can be sure that this little mag has exactly what you want to see in it. So if there is something you think we should know about, an event, a fundraiser, a fabulous park or coffee shop or a to-die-for new product you think every mum should have, drop us a line, we’d love to hear all about it. Each month we will have many regular articles. We will visit a Bayside street to find all the hot spots (check out Bay Street Brighton this month). There will be recipes, fabulous kid’s book reviews from our friends at Page 8, park of the month, HealthyMama fitness and nutrition, reading and literacy ideas from Kinderschool and of course some pages for your creative kids. This month we’ve also got school holiday ideas, the all important info about registering your child for kinder in Bayside for next year, the sometimes controversial subject of treating head lice and we explore some local delights like the Bentleigh Market and a local cubby maker. We hope you love this first issue as much as we do. And remember, shop locally and support mamamag’s local advertisers, as without them we wouldn’t have a FREE mag to bring you each month. Until then, enjoy mamamag and keep on smiling! x /baysidemamamag

Rumble in the jumble Who doesn’t love a good jumble sale. Mad not to really! You never know what you might find! My partner took me to the Camberwell Market for the first time recently. My my, what a treasure trove of goodies. But it was so massive I was completely bamboozled and didn’t know where to start and left with just a 6 pack of jam donuts! But I have the answer to this problem with my new find (well not entirely true, I’ve been going for a while now!)... the Bentleigh Sunday Market. Sure its not in Bayside like Mamamag likes, but it is just up the road and is a fraction of the size, so it is much easier to navigate both to and within. Nestled in the Coles carpark next to Bentleigh station on Centre Road, this oversized jumble sale runs every Sunday morning, rain, hail or shine and for just a gold coin donation to the local Rotary, it is all yours for the taking. I find that upon entering a trash and treasure sale, one of two things can happen. One, you can look around and think ‘gee what a load of
crap’ or Two, a strange wave of craziness passes over you and you suddenly start asking yourself if you could use that second hand pair of rollerskates, if that fake fur might be cute for Winter or is it too late to start a teaspoon collection? But whatever happens, you can find just about anything here, even the kitchen sink (well bathroom today, for a modest $15, really?). With over 145 stalls you can find plants, clothing, cosmetics, jewellery, books, videos, tools, antiques, crafts, pre-loved goods and more! And just looking around at all the different walks of life, from the little Nanna selling off her treasured items (junk), to the 20-something trying to make a few bucks out of the clothes she no longer wears or fits, makes it a fun place to visit. Plus there is always breakfast at Little Tommy Tucker afterwards! The market runs every Sunday 7am-12noon. For more information visit www.bentleighmarket.org

Scratching for Answers? The real truth about Head Lice My son’s school perform a lice check once a term and publish the classes affected in the school newsletter so Mums know to keep an eye out if needed. That’s great and touch wood neither of my two kids have been affected before, but it was scary to see that these little critters had managed to infiltrate 17 classes between prep and grade 6. Head lice have been around for thousands of years and unfortunately we are never going to be completely rid of them. There so many myths about how to manage them so we are here to set them straight. The real truth about head lice and treating them.
Do head lice fly or jump between kids? Head lice do not have wings so they can’t fly. They can’t jump because they do not have ‘knees’. Head lice crawl very fast and require head-to-head contact for transmission. Children are more inclined to get head lice than adults because they engage in more head-tohead contact - over secrets, games, sports. That is why head lice are seen more widely amongst kinder/primary school children than adolescents or adults.
Do head lice live in carpets, clothes, hats or sheets? No. Head lice very rarely fall from the head. They require blood to survive. Head lice feed three to four times a day and without blood, will dehydrate in six hours in a dry climate and 24 hours in a humid climate. An egg requires warmth to hatch. This the reason why they are laid close to the scalp. The further away from the scalp, the less likely they are to survive.
10
Do head lice only like clean hair? No. Head lice are not selective. They don’t care if hair is long, short, blonde, brown, washed this morning or last week. As long as they are warm, and have blood to drink, then they are content.
What treatment kills 100% of head lice or eggs? There is no single treatment that kills 100% of head lice or eggs. Whichever treatment you choose it can take time and persistence to get rid of head lice. Use a method that will not risk the health of your child.
Is there a way to prevent head lice? No. It’s important to check your child’s head regularly with conditioner and comb even when you don’t think your child has head lice. There is no research to prove that chemical or herbal therapies can prevent head lice.
How does the conditioner and comb method work? It’s a very cheap and effective way of finding head lice. Hair conditioner does not kill lice, but it does stun them for about 20 minutes, meaning they do not move around, and it is difficult for them to hang on. This gives you time to comb through the hair with a fine tooth (head lice) comb. Repeat this every second day until there have been no live lice found for ten days.
How does a chemical head lice treatment work? Only use products that are licensed or registered for head lice. There are four different active chemicals that target head lice, each works differently and aims to kill lice and/or eggs.
Do some products work better than others?
Why does my child keep getting re-infected?
Over time, head lice may develop resistance to some chemicals. It is important to check if a treatment you used has worked, and if not, treat again with another product that has a different chemical in it.
Re-infection is the least likely reason for head lice returning in a week’s time. If eggs do not die, or were not removed during the original treatment they may hatch and the life cycle starts all over again. To break this life cycle you must re-treat (regardless of treatment method) seven days after the first treatment and continue with weekly checking.
Why do you have to treat again in seven days time? Head lice eggs take six to seven days to hatch. And when you treat, it’s easy to miss an egg or two. By treating again in seven days, you are aiming to kill and comb out any head lice that have since hatched from eggs, which were missed.
Should I treat everyone in the family?
What should I wash or treat at home?
Does my child have to miss school?
As head lice only live for a short time off the head, the only extra cleaning needed is to wash the pillowslip on the hot cycle or place in the clothes dryer. Head lice combs can be cleaned in hot soapy water.
According to the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2009, children with head lice can be readmitted to school after head lice treatment has commenced. A certificate from a doctor or council is not required before your child goes back to school. Head lice are not the fault of schools, other families or children.
It is important to check each family member, using conditioner and comb, for head lice but only treat those with live lice.

READING IS CHILD’S PLAY! We all want our children to be successful readers, so what can we do to ensure they are “reading ready”? Kinderschool teacher, Emily Weight, firmly believes that learning to read can and should be FUN. She also advises parents to lay the foundations early to avoid difficulties later on. Playing games and getting children involved in hands on activities are great ways to engage your pre-schooler in literacy. Here are 5 simple ideas to get you started...
1
Play I Spy
2
Get Crafty
Try using the letter sounds instead of the traditional letter names, ie. I spy with my little eye, something beginning with ‘sss’ rather than ‘es’. Extra challenge: use ending sounds or diagraphs such as ch / th / sh etc.
Grab some old magazines and cut out pictures of things beginning with a particular letter. (This also gives your child practice using scissors.) Then write the letter in lower case in the middle of some poster paper and make a collage around it. NB: Try to stick to the phonetic letter sound ie. ‘c’ is for cat not circle or chocolate.
Rhyme
Sing nursery rhymes and read rhyming books to your child. When they know the rhyme or book well, try leaving out the last word for them to say. Extra challenge: Make up new verses Eg. Hickory Dickory Dock... The cat ran round the block...
4 5
Alliteration
Have fun thinking up funny sentences using your child’s name. Eg. Silly Sammy slipped on soggy salad sandwiches. Try it with their friend’s names too! For older children you could write the sentences down and have them do the illustrations.
Multi-sensory programs
Use a multi-sensory literacy program such as Jolly Phonics. By getting children active in their learning via songs and actions for each sound, young children can remember them more easily. It’s learning by doing!
So play around with words, play games and get involved and your child will learn to love literacy!

Parklife Our park of the month is Basterfield Park. Corner of Dane Road and Seafoam Street, Hampton East. This hidden gem is not known to many but certainly worth a visit. The huge park has a beautiful ornamental lake with plenty of bird life to keep the littlies amused. The park offers playgrounds on both sides of the lake and acres of grassy hills for the kids to run around to their heart’s content. There is a covered pergola with half a dozen barbecues, built in seats and tables and of course the all essential toilet facilities. I visited on a Monday morning and found a fabulous circuit training session being run by Carolyn at Inspired Fitness Solutions. Most impressed, I have since signed her up for our monthly HealthyMama page! Check it out on page 25.

HEALTHY MAMA Each month we bring you a different health, fitness & nutrition tip.
The perfect pushup: A great exercise for upper body & core strength How do I progress to a full pushup? Let me tell you pushups are one of those exercises that even after you’ve mastered a full one, there’s still more & so they never get easier! They take a lot of upper body & core strength working together to get right. Let’s start at the beginning. Level 1 – I would prefer you start off on a bench so you don’t create bad habits. Take your hands just outside of shoulder width on top of the bench. Step your feet back hip width apart. Your back should be flat & the edge of the bench level with the top of your head. This means when you bend your arms & lower your chest to the bench it should touch in line with your breasts. Then push back up away from the bench. If the kitchen bench is too low, then you may need to start at the wall. Take the hands wide at chest height & touch your nose to the wall keeping a straight back. It’s important to brace your core & not let your back sag here or you might end up with a sore back instead. Also the position of the head is important. Don’t let it drop down, keep looking forward. Remember your neck is an extension of your back so if you bend it you are bending your back. Level 2 – Once you can comfortably do 20 pushups off the high bench, then you need to find a lower bench or chair or you can go to your knees on the ground. All the same rules apply with positioning. Your hands should be inline with your breasts as you lower down, not your upper chest or neck. Also practice getting down low to actually engage your chest muscles [pecs] & triceps [tuckshop arms]. Level 3 – The full pushup on hands & toes with a lovely straight back. And remember to breathe! Practice holding the full plank first to increase strength then do the pushup. The variety of pushups then becomes huge! Enjoy!
HealthyMama is brought to you monthly by Carolyn Smith from Inspired Fitness Solutions. She has been a Personal Trainer for over 13 years & been in business for over 12 years, located in the lovely Basterfield Park, Hampton East during the week, & various beach locations on Saturdays. Carolyn has a passion for health & fitness and is thrilled to bringing you different tips on health, fitness & nutrition each month. I’ve got to have that... A recent visit to the Melbourne Baby & Toddler Show was met with mixed feelings. Firstly I went to find new and exciting products to tell you about, not to shop for my kids. Secondly, I didn’t have the kids or a pram with me. So I was certainly in the minority and had to battle my way through the masses using only my bare hands and my quickly filling showbag as armour. But the battle was worth it and all because within the last 20 metres of my exiting the grand old Exhibition Building I passed the CNP Brands stall. How did I miss this on my earlier passing. This product... well let’s just say it’s almost enough to convince me to have a third child, and I don’t make that statement lightly.
It’s a power folding, mobile phone charging, kilometer counting, headlight-sporting stroller that charges itself as you walk.
Presenting.... The Origami® from the clever US people at 4moms®. This isn’t just a rather good looking stroller, this is so so much more. At the touch of a button this stroller folds or unfolds itself. This stroller is a techloving parent’s dream and besides pushing it does most of the work for you. It’s a power folding, mobile phone charging, kilometer counting, LCD-sporting stroller that recharges itself with generators in the rear wheels that charge as you walk. What’s that? You want more? This baby (pardon the pun) has headlights to make you and your bubba visible all the time and additional pathway lights located under the stroller that turn on automatically in low-light conditions. Plus of course it has all the usually boxes ticked like a bassinet option, one push brake, handle bar bag accessory, peek-aboo sunroof, four-wheel suspension, four cup holders, six colour options and loads of storage. And it’s all yours for $1499.95
Even if you are not in the market for the Rolls Royce of strollers, this baby has got to be seen to be believed. Check it out at www.4moms.au.com/origami.html

Glitter Calm Jars A creative approach to time out. The kids love to make them and the parents love to use them! Watching the glitter swirl and twirl and slowly settle to the bottom helps kids to calm their minds and body.
To make these sparkly swirly jars of fun you will need; • One jar approx. 800ml to 1 litre • Food dye • Glitter • Glitter glue • 2 tablespoons of Detergent • Warm water • Liquid nails/super glue 1. Half fill the jar with water 2. Squeeze in the glitter glue into the jar. The more glitter in the jar the longer it takes to settle to the bottom. 3. Shake in a good amount of normal glitter. Add the detergent - this helps the glitter to separate and flow more freely. 4. Add a couple of drops of food dye. 5. Fill the jar with water 6. Put liquid nails on the lid before closing nice and tight. 7. Give the jar a good shake and watch it swirl, twirl and slowly fall to the bottom.
