Welcome Can you believe the year is almost over? School holidays came and went in a blur. Between embarking on fun family adventures (that’s me and the kids at Healsville Sanctuary!) to publishing two Mamamags for the first time (an adventure in itself, but a very fun one!), the holidays felt like they never even happened. I did manage to set up office at Crocs Playcentre one day, which was rather handy. The kids had a ball whilst I plugged away on my laptop. Several mums admired my multi-tasking, commenting on how clever I was and the kids worked my distraction by ordering ice creams and ‘bubbles’ for lunch (mother of the year!)! We had a fun morning at Sandy beach digging up the children’s pirate treasure (thanks Grandma for burying it 15min prior and for helping Milla make her cool map!). If you have a little pirate in the house (yes, mine’s a girl!) then this is a fun activity for any weekend. Milla spent several ‘Grandma afternoons’ painting her treasure box, purchasing treasure (from the local $2 shop) and plotting and decorating her pirate map. Then one blustery morning at the beach we all followed the map to unearth the loot! With holidays over and the successful first distribution of two magazines, I finally found the time to settle into the new Mamamag office. Whilst I still have lots of decorating to do, it feels like home already. It is fabulous having a bigger space to spread out and enjoy. Here’s a sneak peak! I will post some pics up on Facebook when I have it all looking fabulous! Until next month, be good mamas! xx /localmamamag @localmamamag

messy faces! 5 tips for stress-free mealtimes End the dinner battles and win the food war! Follow these five simple tips and you could find mealtimes become a lot less stressful and a lot more fun!
1. Be a good influence How often have you let a naughty word slip out when you thought the kids weren’t in earshot only to have it repeated back at the most embarrassingly inappropriate time, i.e. in front of the mother in law or during quiet story time? You are the biggest influence on your kids, so let them see you eat a wide variety of food, try new things with them, involve them in planning what to cook for dinner and make time for when they can cook for you. Make food exciting and enticing for everyone in the family and hopefully it’ll rub off on the fussiest of eaters.
2. Eat together It’s a scientifically proven fact that family mealtimes can have a massive beneficial impact on your kids; improving social skills and speech, lowering risks of obesity and eating disorders, and helping them do better academically. But if you are like every other Australian family, getting everyone together at the table every night is nigh on impossible. Don’t give up; there is no magic number of how many meals we should eat as a family, so if weekday family dinners are impossible, make a family ritual out of Saturday pancake breakfast, Sunday roast lunch or the classic Friday night takeaway.
4
3. Be prepared Unless you are lucky enough have a full time cleaner, nanny and PA, there will be those nights when you don’t have the time to spend cooking up a storm in the kitchen. Keep a stock of quick, simple healthy meals in the fridge and freezer and you will always have something wholesome to feed them.
4. Let them get messy Cooking with kids doesn’t have to be laborious or time consuming. Give them an empty bowl and a spoon and get them to make their own dinner by choosing and adding ingredients. Start with a base of pasta or rice (or a wrap), and then get them to add ingredients like cooked peas or broccoli, ham, cheese, and olives. Make a simple cheese sauce to go over the top and you can even sneak a few blended or mashed veg in there - who knew spinach could be so tasty? Keep this fun, and you might find most of the meal has been eaten before you’ve finished cooking!
5. Keep calm and breathe! You can’t make every meal a fun, exciting experience, and sometimes kids are going to be tired, full or just plain annoying. As frustrating as it can be to have your lovingly made, wholesome meal treated as if it were poisoned, making the dinner table a battle ground will do more harm in the long run, than a couple of plates of food going in the bin. Don’t give up!

PND... a mum’s story Another day in the life of a blissful, calm mum who absolutely loved motherhood….hardly! My days as a mum couldn’t be further from it. My days consisted of swinging on a pendulum of loving motherhood and hating motherhood, but as the swing gained momentum, the loving moments were becoming few and far between. At the time I had a 22 month old and a 6 month old and my time was increasingly being spent resenting my baby, yelling at my toddler, seeing the look of fear on his face and falling to the ground in tears of guilt, mortified by the person and mother I had become.
I was doing almost everything I swore I would never do as a parent. Where did this anger come from? Where did this self-loathing came from? This was not the person that I used to be before kids. I was an achiever damn it. I get things done. I get things right. If there is a problem I fix it! Why was this so hard? Why was I feeling this way? Why couldn’t I get this right? After all, everyone else did it with ease (or so I thought). These typical thoughts and feelings consumed me, but they also became my catalyst for change and the inspiration that would transform the lives of many other parents feeling exactly the same. Little did I know it at the time, but these experiences were The Parental Stress Centre of Australia in the making. You see, what I was experiencing, was the swing between anxiety and depression. And it was one particular incident where I got so angry, I slammed a knife on the bench and it bounced off and narrowly missed my (then) two year old’s head.
8
But it was in that moment, everything changed. Because right in the middle of my tears, these words sprung into my head. They said: “No one else can change this for you. No one else can change the way you feel about your life. Only you can!” As logical as those words were, they deeply resonated within me and from that moment on, I was like a woman possessed. I watched my reactions. I observed my thoughts behind my reactions. I pulled out every single personal development book I’d ever read or notes from courses I had attended and I retrained myself to think differently about parenting. On my journey of self-discovery and change, I realised that information like this was not readily available to parents – resources out there were all mainly focussed on how to control your child’s behaviour, or they offered simple advice like “walk away when angry” or “take time out”. That advice is helpful, but it just wasn’t enough. There was nothing that was teaching me how to look at my own behaviour, understand it and change it by changing how I thought.
So I started to teach others what I’d learnt. I started to write about my experiences and how I could change my thinking in the heat of the moment and I started to bring some value to my adversities.
I was gutted! What sort of monster was I?
Fast forward eight years of applying this information and teaching it, combined with working for a retreat dealing with clients with severe depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol addictions and you find yourself looking at The Parental Stress Centre of Australia.
I went running to my room crying uncontrollably and screaming how much I hated my life….all with my then 6 month old on my hip.
Just last month we were named the winner of the 2014 Ausmumpreneur Rising Start Awards acknowledging us for our work with parents.
My message these days to other parents is this: “What you’ll find in my resources is far from being presented from a pedestal of perfection. I have to apply what I teach every day to myself. Parenting is not easy. We all know that, but it doesn’t have to be hard either. And it doesn’t have to end in depression and anxiety. Your thinking holds the key to how you feel. Often we focus on stopping the feeling and trying to stop our behaviours and we put all our effort here. But when we understand just how powerful our thoughts are, you will see that our reactions and emotions are just the end result. If you want to change how you feel and react, you have to change how you think. Then you will automatically see a change in behaviour and emotions. This is the philosophy The Parental Stress Centre uses for parents AND for our child’s behaviour. This month will see the promotion of Postnatal Depression Awareness Week at the forefront of media, being held nationally from 16th to the 22nd of November 2014. The Parental Stress Centre will be running a live online 4 week workshop called ‘BE the Change’ in alignment with raising awareness and teaching parents how to understand and alleviate parental stress, depression and anxiety using the specific methods that have helped me and hundreds of other parents across Australia and the world. For more information and help (for mums and dads) visit parentalstress.com.au By Jackie Hall, mum of 2 and founder of the Parental Stress Centre of Australia Information and support can also be found at panda.org.au or beyondblue.org.au

it will just have to do! “I’m sick of looking in the mirror and saying - it will just have to do”. As a mum of two, I know the daily routine all too well…the alarm goes off, the kids need bribing to get out of bed, the packed lunches need making, one of your kids spills cereal everywhere, yet another nappy needs changing, your husband leaves his half-finished breakfast on the kitchen table…...it’s a pattern repeated every day and everywhere.

In between all this bedlam and our determination to walk out of the door leaving the house looking acceptably tidy-ish (although I’ve come to the conclusion this is impossible) we also have to grab time to get ourselves dressed. Yes, I know, throwing on the first thing that falls from our wardrobe is often the simplest and quickest option, but does it really have to be your only option? Time to break the habit! Time to walk out of the door every morning feeling stylish! Confine those sloppy trackie pants and big sweatshirts to nights curled up in front of the TV. Feeling better about yourself on the outside, will only improve your confidence and positivity, whilst also giving your ‘can-do’ attitude a boost. Now, don’t panic, it’s not necessary to put on a Little Black Dress and pair of 6 inch Jimmy Choo’s every morning for school drop-off. Some well-fitting jeans (a 110% ‘must have’), stylish top, jacket or great cardi and a handful of co-ordinating accessories will just do the trick. It’s still simple and it’s still quick.
So to get you started, here are a few hints and tips: 1. Move those trackie pants and ‘around the house’ clothes to a separate area of your wardrobe. Be firm and promise yourself that they are now only for wearing at home or sloppy Sundays (and yes, we are all still allowed those). 2. Whilst you’re going through your wardrobe, use the opportunity to chuck out any old clothes and dispose of wardrobe `horrors’. Make a list of any clothing gaps, especially if you’re saying goodbye to wearing your trackie every day, as you may need to invest in some new tops and jeans. Keep this list handy, so you can focus on buying the right clothes in the correct styles/colours, helping you to build a more flexible working wardrobe. 3. Take time to organise your wardrobe so it’s easy to use. You can’t coordinate your clothes if you can’t see them. Try arranging your wardrobe into casual and more formal sections according to the seasons. Then within each section colour block your clothes. Once you’ve reorganised, mixing and matching, especially in a hurry becomes effortless. 4. Develop your daily signature style – one that suits you, your body shape, lifestyle and personality. It will become your comfort zone within which you can experiment and find ways to express your individuality. For example, you may love adding bright scarves or oversized necklaces or edgy sandals. Keep refining your ideas until you feel you’ve nailed it and it becomes second nature.
5. Even though you’re a Melbournian….. don’t rely on black! Get to know which colours are your ‘wow’ ones and wear them, even if it’s just with accessories. 6. Plan your outfit the night before . No need to lay it all out, but visualise it including bag and shoes to ensure everything works and coordinates. When you wake up you’ll know exactly what you’re going to wear, rather than grabbing the first thing you see in the panic to leave on time. 7. Know how long it takes you to get ready in the morning and be realistic about this. 10 minutes less in bed can reduce the stress of rushing and lead to a much calmer morning. 8. And for those of you that really, truly can’t part with wearing your tracksuits, find styles that are fashionably cut and flattering (such Lululemon and Lorna Jane) then to complete your look, try adding a coordinating scarf, some simple jewellery and a stylish pair of sneakers. And finally, even though Spring is almost behind us, it’s not too late to have a Spring clean of your wardrobe. Just have some fun and say goodbye to ‘it will just have to do.’ Sarah Singer runs dressyu Melbourne, a personal styling and interview coaching consultancy. www.dressyu.com.au.

After school snack or lunch box idea? We’ve got you covered thanks to Kirsty at Bayside Bodyworx
Vietnamese rice paper rolls
Makes: 12 | Prep time: 20 mins
Many mums have been asking for a healthy after school snack idea and so we had Kirsty from Bayside Bodyworx provide us this beauty! If you wish to make them more of a meal, you can add 80g of rice vermicelli, soaked in warm water for 2-3 minutes and drained, to the rolls. Ingredients:
Method:
2 ripe avocados sliced in 6 pieces and placed in lime juice to prevent browning 12 large (22cm) rice paper wrappers 24 coriander leaves 24 mint leaves 200g store bought or leftover homemade roast chicken or 12 cooked Australian tiger prawns or other protein of choice 1 cup bean sprouts 1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce 1 cup thinly sliced or grated carrot
Fill a shallow dish with warm water. Dip 1 rice paper sheet in water, then drain and place on a board. (It continues to soften on standing.)
Dipping Sauce: 2 tbsp sweet chilli sauce, 1 tbsp fish sauce, 2 tbsp water, 1 tbsp lime juice. Whisk ingredients in small bowl and adjust according to taste. There should be a delicate balance between sour, salty and sweet.
Arrange 2 coriander leaves and 2 mint leaves in a line across the lower third of wrapper. Place 1 prawn or other protein half across the herbs, then 1 avocado slice alongside. Place another prawn or piece of protein half on the avocado, and place another avocado slice on the first prawn. Top with some bean sprouts, shredded lettuce & carrot. N.B. If making into a more filling meal or snack add vermicelli at this stage too before rolling. Fold base of the wrapper over filling, and fold in the sides. Roll up to enclose. Place on a tray. Repeat with remaining wrappers and fillings (to prevent sticking, keep the rolls slightly apart on the tray). Serve with the dipping sauce.

Awful Auntie, David Walliams, $19.99 The books by David Walliams are delighting Bayside kids with their Roald Dahl type humour and this new books is no exception. This is the story of Stella, whose parents, Lord and Lady Saxby, were killed in a car crash, and of her dreadful Aunt Alberta, who is plotting to trick her out of her inheritance. But with mischievous and irrepressible Soot, the ghost of a chimney sweep, alongside her Stella is determined to fight back... And sometimes a special friend, however different, is all you need to win through. Grade 2 and above.

the healthy harvest Encouraging children to love their vegies! Everyone knows that vegetables are good for you. Many parents earnestly strive to ensure their children eat them every day, but many don’t succeed. In light of this all-too-common challenge, parents often ask for tips on getting kids to eat more vegetables. And we’ve got a new solution! Meet Emma Martin, a local Bayside mother, founder of Edible Education and author of her first book ‘The Healthy Harvest’. Emma’s business, Edible Education, is where nutrition and education merge. Its core focus is to educate children about healthy eating and where food comes from. Emma believes that education can lead to a change in the food behaviour of children and in turn, decrease levels of overweight and obesity. After having her two children, Emma, a university-qualified nutritionist, found a gap in the education provided to young children about where food comes from and the benefits of healthy eating. Using her own children as inspiration, she wrote a children’s picture book that teaches children about good nutrition and where food comes from based around the five food groups. The book is both fun and factual, and through use of rhymes and vibrant characters, children and parents are led on a journey through the book. With the help of Harry Harvester and his friends – Alfie Apple, Carly Carrot, Charlie Cheese, Wally Wheat, Sammy Salmon and Tommy Takeaway – children will learn the importance of each food group, where food comes from, the nutrients they provide and how much they should consume to get the maximum health benefits for their growing bodies. The Healthy Harvest is available for sale through Emma’s website www.edibleeducation.com.au, and locally through Kidna Books in Hampton. You can also enter our November colouring in comp for your chance to win 1 of 2 copies right here at Mamamag!

MAMA of the month This month we met with Fiona Trewhitt, a Hampton mum of three exceptionally cute kids, Life and Wellness coach, Fitness Professional and founder of the Mumafit app. Her app is consistently ranked in the top 100 Health and Fitness Apps - out of a whopping 23,000+ apps! Go mama!
You have your own Fitness app, so I guess we should assume fitness is your background. What were you doing before kids? I was working for an AFL Club for the last seven years, and before that had many years in the sport and recreation industry. Many moons ago I completed a degree in Sports Science. What gave you the idea to start an app? It was hubby’s idea originally. He’s an exercise physiologist and had trained many pregnant women, so when pregnant with our third, he suggested filming my exercise regimes to share. What were the first steps you took to turn the idea for Mumafit into a reality? First steps were filming me during each trimester and working with our developers to build the app. The app has loads of content, so there was lots of groundwork. It’s grown so much since then and been a wonderful journey.
Being in the iTunes app library means you are available worldwide. Is this something you thought much about when you developed the app or were you tailoring it more for the local Aussie market? I didn’t think too much about it, but it has been downloaded in so many different countries and my blog is read in every English speaking country, so it blows my mind. There are countries where women don’t have much freedom or resources, so I’ve loved helping these women. This must make marketing the app a bit interesting, yes? Yes, it’s tricky as I market my wellness coaching services nationally and the app internationally, so it’s forced me to think differently. Social media, particularly Instagram, has been a great tool for me.
Tell us a little bit about the app and what people can expect: People can expect a user friendly companion to keep them active during pregnancy and early motherhood. It features a safe exercise program for each trimester, post natal program, stretch program, over 60 exercise videos, inspirational quotes, daily pregnancy tips, exercise diary, and the ‘prameter’ which maps and measures your cardio. Plus it links to my blog www.mumafit. com.au where there’s a wealth of information.
This is my first pregnancy and I’m so happy that I’ve found Mumafit. I love how you are inspiring, realistic and kind! Most “fitness moms” make you feel like you’ve failed if you can’t achieve what they have, but you make us feel motivated even if we haven’t achieved it yet . I love how you put health of baby before everything else and that makes me trust and follow your strategies. (Danielle) 26
If you haven’t already, jump over to mumafit and download her app!! This was the motivation I needed. Also I have never used a ball while training and found it a lot more comfortable. And I sure am feeling it (fitmummydiary on Instagram) You’ve now branched out into life and wellness coaching. Is this something you’ve always been passionate about? I’ve been a qualified life coach for 8 years, so it’s nice to finally use this in such a niche way. I’m fascinated by the human mind, personal development, and how we are so commonly our own worst enemy. I’m LOVING helping mums gain more clarity, greater self love and find easy ways to prioritise their health and improve the health and happiness of their family. I’ve achieved lots in my career, but this is the most self-satisfying work I’ve ever done. What sort of services do you offer? I Skype with women nationally to help them break unhealthy habits, create healthier habits and to think and feel differently. I assist women with planning and time management to fit in enhanced self-care practises, teach meditation, stress management, self-love, correct physical rehabilitation after baby and offer breastfeeding friendly cleanses and meal planning assistance. All sessions are private and tailored to the individual so can go in any direction, which I love. Motherhood can be tough, so I love helping women find more energy and a positive mind-set to make it more enjoyable. Where do you see your business heading in the future? Good question as I have an abundance of ideas and a distinct lack of time with three children under school age! You must have your hands full with your three little cuties. Got any funny parenting stories you’d like to share? My funniest (in hindsight) would be me getting a spray tan and my two year old and 11 month old locking themselves into the beauty salon with all of my clothes, phone and beautician’s phone. Long story short, we managed to call for help. 45 minutes later, (during which I was wearing paper underpants and hastily borrowed beautician’s top) the door was destroyed with a hacksaw to rescue the kids. 27

Parklife
mamamag park of the month!
Our park of the month is thomas street park. Thomas Street Hampton. I’ve been coming to this park since I was young and it must be one of the most premium wooden adventure playgrounds in Melbourne. People drive far and wide to spend a day exploring this glorious fort playground, but as Baysiders we are lucky to have it so close. The amazing wooden structure has so many nooks and crannies to be explored, with secret hideaways, tunnels and narrow walkways (careful some are designed to move!) to keep kids busy. There are three slides, a flying fox, turrets to keep a lookout from, a wooden car, sandpit, monkey bars and four swings all under a shade sail. The whole park area is huge with bbq’s, toilets, bike paths and lots of space to play or picnic. And on some weekends you can even enjoy a pony ride (for a small fee)! What’s not to love!

Does your child suffer from recurring ear infections? Chances are when you take your child with an ear infection to the doctor you’re going to walk out of there with a prescription for antibiotics. Antibiotics have been prescribed for many years because researchers and doctors thought that ear infections were primarily bacterial, but we now know that 80% of ear infections start out as viral in origin, and complicate treatment recommendations. Studies also suggest that between 45% and 80% of kids with recurring ear infections have food allergies. In other words, it’s more likely than not that a food allergy is at the root of the chronic ear infections. The most typical would be to gluten, dairy products, soy, peanuts, and some of the non-gluten grains. The standard treatment with antibiotics can be, at best, partially effective in the majority of cases and what parents don’t know is that they’ll actually resolve themselves within four to seven days without any antibiotic treatment at all. Helping ease pain and discomfort should be the primary treatment course. If antibiotics were harmless, as we originally thought they were, it wouldn’t be a big deal, right? But we know that they’re not harmless, and ironically,
32
taking antibiotics is actually going to increase the risk of contracting chronic recurring ear infections because it disrupts the microbiome, which then makes the child more susceptible to future ear infections not to mention the havoc it’s playing on their pristine digestive ecosystems. Unfortunately, allowing the body to heal itself is less adopted these days, with most doctors still prescribing antibiotics and most parents are still asking for them. Guidelines released in 2006 encourage doctors to initially manage the pain and not prescribe antibiotics for children who present with ear infections and to defer antibiotic use for the sicker children who are not improving two or three days later. I know of some doctors who are aware of this, but it’s very difficult for them not to prescribe antibiotics because the parents are really distressed. And heck, I get it. I have a kid and it’s downright awful watching her in pain, so I certainly don’t blame parents for wanting to alleviate the suffering of their children. The problem is as just mentioned, it’s complicated – a bit like some relationships. If the antibiotic won’t be helpful in 80% of the cases, then that’s a pretty big risk you’re taking, to take an antibiotic when it’s unlikely to work long term and it’s downright toxic
to our bodies. Taking the antibiotic kills off the beneficial bacteria and promotes the colonization of more disease-causing strains, and now the next ear infection has a greater chance of being bacterial, not viral. But it does not matter the cycle has begun and at the next visit your kid gets another antibiotic anyway, starting the cycle of infection after infection, antibiotic dependency, and impaired immune function. Then grommets perhaps and you’re potentially in for years and years of dealing with ear problems when perhaps it was a food allergy in first place.
• Lastly strengthen the immune system and consider botanical or herbal alternatives to antibiotics. There’s Elderberry, Albizzia and Echinacea amongst others that I can provide. Then we have, Vitamin C, which you can use up to 400 mg in a 1 to 3-yearold child. I wouldn’t exceed 400 mg. You can also increase foods like bell peppers, papaya, guava, strawberries, kiwi, broccoli, kale, and other leafy greens that are high in vitamin C. Fermented Cod Liver oil is also potent for immunity, containing high levels of Vit A, Vit D, Vit E, EPA/DHA and Vit K2.
So what should you be focusing on as a parent with a child who has recurring ear infections?
At Lifessential, we seek to prevent disease from occurring and use the power of food to support and nourish the vital force and body to heal one’s self. It’s worth remembering that we are all unique and our cases can all be very different and seeking the advice from a qualified functional or integrated practitioner is always recommended before taking any medications, herbal or not. The information on this page is general information and should not be used to diagnose or treat a health problem or disease without a professional health care provider.
• Certainly the primary goal is eliminating any food triggers that could be contributing to these recurring infections since the food allergies are a factor in many, if not most, cases of recurring ear infections. Eliminate all grains, diary, soy and peanuts from the diet for at least two weeks then bring back one of those foods each day. • We want to fix the gut, to improve levels of beneficial bacteria and the best way to tackle this is via probiotics and prebiotics. It’s important to use a kid’s probiotic and look for strains that are naturally in the gut of infants at that time, Bifidobacterium infantis is the main one. Prebiotics such as potato starch, have a greater impact over the long term in increasing the levels of beneficial bacteria. Mix with something like coconut milk and start at ¼ tsp and build up slowly over time.

Tackling the take home reader Does the thought of listening to your child read fill you with dread or delight? Parents have such an important and influential part to play in their child’s reading journey, so here are some tips to make the experience a positive one!
Before reading! Choose a time when your child is not tired and one that fits into the family routine. Remember they’ve had a busy school day and reading to you is revision, not another lesson. It’s a time to show you what they can do! Firstly, look at the cover together and predict what the book may be about. This puts the child at ease and creates the desire to read it to find out more.
During reading! If your child struggles with a word there are a few strategies they can use, but it depends on the word. It’s no good telling your child to sound out the word “because”! If it’s a sight word, simply tell them the word and move on. If it’s a word they can sound out, remind them to look at the letters and what sounds they make to decode the word. Remember that some words have 2 letters making one sound. Eg. rain would be sounded out as r..ai..n. If the book uses repetitive language, make sure they are looking at the words while they read, not just memorising it and looking at you!!
Always allow your child time to work out the word before you intervene. Stop at appropriate places in the book and talk about the pictures, the characters and what might happen next. This also gives your child a break so they are ready to tackle the next page. If it’s a long book, take turns by reading a page each. This way you can show them how to read with expression and fluency. It also builds a sense of partnership and shows that you value the experience. Praise their attempts as you go and remain positive.
After reading! Talk about whether their prediction was correct. Did they like or dislike the book and why? If they liked it, why not re-read the book on another night or to a different person? The more confident and fluent they become the better. Remember that reading should be enjoyable and rewarding. If your child doesn’t want to read to you or isn’t progressing, seeking some outside support may be just what they need. The school may not offer a reading program that suits their learning style so a fresh approach can often be the answer! By Emily Weight - B.Ed. Putting smiles back Mental health issues affect as many as one in seven Australian children. Studies suggest that mental health issues are prevalent across all Australian communities. There is a pressing need to provide a range of quality support services to families regardless of their socioeconomic situation. Family Life, a Bayside charity, provides this support to children across the whole of Melbourne’s South-East. Under the guidance of CEO Jo Cavanagh OAM, Family Life provides responses that include: counselling, assessment, school and family support programs, community engagement and educational programs. Family Life’s Children’s Mental Health SHINE program gives a supportive ear to children aged 5-16 who may be experiencing difficulties with stress, anxiety, depression and other challenges. Family Life also offers support to children who have parents with mental health concerns, or who are experiencing the ripple effect of mental health issues in their homes and in local communities. Ms Cavanagh says,
“Mental health issues do not discriminate. Family Life’s Family and Children’s Mental Health services allow us to support children and teenagers across the South-East, who are experiencing challenging or difficult situations, and risks.” Contact Family Life on 03 8599 5433 www.familylife.com.au www.shine.asn.au 38
Community is a primary focus of Family Life. As is well documented, whole social groups see the effects of well-supported children, through lowered crime rates, higher school enrolments and social stability. In providing a safe environment for children, Family Life nurtures the very heart of the community. Family Life is pleased to announce the launch of the SHINE Children’s Mental Health website. Children often lack the language and understanding to express their feelings. Based on Family Life’s extensive experience working with children and families in the community, designed for children, the website provides engaging and accessible information about a variety of mental health concerns, written in words that children can understand. Through use of the site, the children become equipped with language to communicate their worries, and greater awareness of how they’re feeling.
“There is a preventative element to it. We want to encourage children to become not just happy children, but happy adults, too,” Cavanagh says. And with as many as one in three Australian adults experiencing mental health concerns (half of which began before the age of 14 years old), Family Life’s work is now more important than ever. Through SHINE Children’s Mental Health program, Family Life is paving the way for an informed, empowered and healthy community in the future.

flowerstyle 5 tips for styling flowers in your home To celebrate the launch of Bateau in Hampton, a flower shop without the frou-frou, Bateau’s own Jan Drinan has put together 5 tips for styling flowers in your own home.
1. Flowers speak for themselves Clear your coffee and dining tables of everything else and let the flowers speak for themselves. Simple and unstructured is better - I’d rather spend my money on three bunches of the same flower (e.g. a field flower like Geraldton’s Wax) and let it burst off the table, rather than an arrangement of three or four different flowers and greenery in the same vase.
2. Spread the love Mirror your dining table arrangement, and break off a few sprigs and scatter them throughout the house in smaller vessels such as mini milkshake bottles or old glass honey jars.
3. It’s not about how much you spend Short on cash? Greenery and blossom sticks from your garden (or your neighbour’s garden, shh!) in a lovely white ceramic jug can really bring a room to life.
4. Get creative In between trips to the flower markets, I decorate my home with anything from fruit and vegetables, herbs to walnuts. For instance, for a green and yellow colour palette I might decorate my table with a big wooden box of lemons and limes, a white soup bowl of green heirloom tomatoes and a few big bunches of greenery from my father in law’s lemon tree.
5. Love your vessels! When I travel I’m constantly scouring antique shops and markets for Belgium blue & white ceramic jugs, copper pots, French mixing bowls, wine boxes and locally crafted chopping blocks. Beteau is a new kind of flower shop that is designed to inspire customers to use the creativity they have in themselves and style the things they find at Bateau into their own homes. In addition to selling fresh cut flowers, greenery and found objects, Bateau will also offer: • Event styling for weddings, parties and very special occasions • Curated pieces for the home by local artists, • A subscription service offering 3, 6 and 12 month home delivery service 295 Hampton Street Hampton | www.bateau.com.au 40

The pram workout!
Ok ladies, there’s always a way to squeeze in some exercise, whether it’s at home or taking out the pram. Pushing a pram is a good workout for the legs, core and arms, but make sure it’s the right height for you and you’re not bending forward too much, loading up your lower back. That copped enough while you were pregnant. We want to strengthen it now, especially if you didn’t keep up your exercise prior. So how do you do this? There are so many things you can do, but let’s start with the pram this month. You have 3 ways to do a pram workout – 1. On your own, 2. Get a group together and hire a trainer like myself to bring equipment and meet at a park for a mums and bubs class, and 3. Instead of just meeting your mothers group for morning tea, meet up to walk and do exercises – then get a coffee! And if you’re already thinking those 3 options are too hard, then they will be. You have to want to tone, strengthen and get fit, and have a go before you say they don’t work. That’s why a mothers group can be good, as you get support from others going through the same things, and you can help each other with the positives and negatives.
So where to from here? If you’re on your own and want to find a group, ask around. Maybe you prefer to work out alone. Most parks have exercise equipment now, or at least benches you can do things off. Pick 6 exercises and make up your own circuit then take the pram for a jog or walk between sets. A 30min high intensity session is perfect to give you a kickstart 3 times a week with some low impact in between. That means you have to sweat and breathe heavy – it’s good for you! Or you can do the same thing with your group. Each pick an exercise to contribute to the session. Or hire a trainer between you to keep the cost down and have someone looking out for your technique, giving you guidance if you have any injury issues to work around, and get more variety with different exercises and equipment. So are you ready to get started? I know you’re already wondering what to wear. Any excuse to buy something new – even if it is training gear. Make sure you have the right shoes too. Pick what’s best for you and have fun reaching your goals! This month HealthyMama is brought to you by Carolyn Smith from Inspired Fitness Solutions www.inspiredfitnesssolutions.com

National Psychology Week 9-15 November 2o14 National Psychology Week is an opportunity to increase public awareness of how we can all lead healthier, happier and more meaningful lives. According to the Stress and Wellbeing in Australia Survey published by the Australian Psychology Society Stress in 2013: • Almost three-quarters of Australians (73%) reported that stress was having some impact with almost one in five (17%) reporting that stress was impacting their physical health. • In 2013, significantly more Australians (65% 2013 vs. 60% 2012) reported that current stress was affecting their mental health, with one in five people reporting it had a strong to very strong impact on their mental health. • One in four (24%) Australians reported mental health issues as a source of stress. • Finances, family and health issues continued to rank as the top causes of stress for Australians. • Working Australians reported significantly lower overall workplace wellbeing in 2013 compared with findings in previous years. • Working Australians reported significantly lower levels of job satisfaction and significantly lower levels of interest in their jobs than in the previous two years. • Generally, working women were significantly more likely than working men to report that they felt valued and supported to do their job. The focus for National Psychology Week this year will be helping Australians to manage stress and increase their wellbeing, and to recognise when professional help is needed.
How can I recognise if I am anxious or depressed? Anxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried. While stress and anxious feelings are a common response to a situation where a person feels under pressure, it usually passes once the stressful situation has passed, or ‘stressor’ is removed. Anxiety is when these anxious feelings don’t subside. Anxiety is when they are ongoing and exist without any particular reason or cause. It’s a serious condition that makes it hard for a person to cope with daily life. We all feel anxious from time to time, but for a person experiencing anxiety, these feelings cannot be easily controlled without help. Depression is not just about feeling down now and then. The word depression is commonly used to describe many feelings, such as being sad, ‘blue’, miserable or upset. However, a person can feel all these emotions without suffering from the mental disorder depression. The difference lies in the length and severity of the feelings. Clinical depression is a mental, emotional and physical state that is intense, long-lasting and seriously affects daily life. It is a pervasive despair, not just a mood that someone can snap out of readily. How can a psychologist help? A psychologist can help by supporting you, helping to understand to causes of your anxiety or depression, resolve issues and work toward your personal goals, using their expertise, skills and knowledge. They use a variety of ‘talk therapy’ approaches to help you manage stress, overcome depression and increase wellbeing. By Anastasia Sagris-Desmond, MAPS. fun for the kids juggling balls Fine Motor skills are super important for our kid’s growth and development. The simple act of playing with a ball can help improve these skills. It will mean that your kids can write neater, colour neater, do up buttons, get dressed faster, eat correctly and more. So I thought why not have fun and help out our kids too. What you will need: For one ball • 3 balloons • half a cup of uncooked rice • scissors • a funnel (can be done with out but will make it easier) Let’s get started • Grab your first balloon and place on the end of your funnel • Pour in all of the rice and tie the end of the balloon as close to the rice as possible. Cut off the end of the balloon, close to the knot. • Grab your second balloon and cut the end off. • Then cut four holes around the balloon. • Place this balloon over the rice filled balloon • Grab your last balloon and repeat, Cut off end, cut holes, place over rice filled balloon. • And you’re done! Repeat this process to make as many juggling balls as you want (at least three). Have fun!! Don’t forget to come and visit me at lizzyann.com.au Come and do a Christmas workshop with me, lots of fun!!!
