From Gang List to Best Sellers List:

Wichita poet who was once on WPD’s Gang List aspires to become a best-selling author A Wichita poet can now add “author” to his resume. Desmond “Des The Poet” Bryant will release “Better Days in 90 Days: Secrets, Tips & Cheat Codes” on Monday, August 23rd at The White Building. Personal growth and a promise to his late mother inspired him to write the self-help book. From 6:30-8:30 p.m. he will host a book signing and seminar teaching others about “manifestation, preparation and execution.”

Writing the book allowed Bryant to reflect on his life’s ups and downs. He hopes it will resonate with others and inspire them to take back control of their lives.

“I grew up in a poverty-stricken household with parents who had drug addictions,” says Bryant, who self-published the book. “You can decide that you want better for yourself.”

He has enjoyed performing spoken word poetry at venues across the country as “Des the Poet.” But he felt compelled to create a book to motivate others.

“My mom used to tell me, ‘Write the book. What are you waiting for?’ Bryant recalls. “She’d say, ‘I ain’t gonna be here forever.’”

List. The list documents gang members and individuals WPD believes are gang-related even if they have not been found guilty of a crime. The list is so confidential that many of the people listed never know they’ve been identified as gang members until they have police interaction. He believes that at age 16 he was added to the list when police pulled over a car he was riding in with family members who were associated with gangs.

Bryant worked closely with the city’s Chief of Police to have his name removed from the gang list. He was instrumental in WPD’s decision to mail notices to youth under the age of 18 if they were added to the Gang List.

Bryant doesn’t want to be seen as a gang member or as a criminal. Instead, he wants to be recognized as a husband, father, community member, entrepreneur and eventually a best-selling author.

“I wrote this book so that others can look at me and see the light in me that could be in them too,” he says.

The book retails for $97. Those who purchase the book at the booking signing event will receive a t-shirt, complimentary wine, and access to the seminar. After the event the book will be available for purchase on Amazon. For more information, visit sincerelydesi.com/better-days-in90-days.
