TATEMENT

am a storyteller. Instead of using words printed in paper and binded into books, i use experiences which ultimately translate into spaces that come together to form buildings, communities and furthermore, cities. My architecture is based on narratives, i see architecture as a mediator between place, time, history, and people. In order to communicate a message, it has to be clear, understandable and enveloping. I have seen and experienced that the built environment has an impact in people's mental and emotional health, therefore, architecture should embrace the senses in order to create a positve impact in people's lives. Today's architecture is turning away from people, and is being isolated into utopian cities and circumstances. My believe is that architects should take a stand and convey a meaningful message to the people that we build for trhough experiences, perceptions, through the intangible. For me, architecture is a story written in its own language, and it's our duty to make that language relevant and trascendental.

A

rchitecture, understood as a mediator between people + place, is used as a medium to provide the user with multiplicity of experiences while roaming through the city, site, and the building itself. Located in Chattanooga, TN., Insertion is a punctured intervention to the Hunter Museum of American Art, one that gives continuity to the culture of the Bluff District, and to the patchwork created through architecture during the different expansions of the museum. Thus, by inserting a series of volumes in the existing gaps between each patch, the proposal creates a framing effect to celebrate the individual character of the pieces, while enveloping the user with an unifying transition element

between the patches. The culture of the bluff, the location of the the project, and susteinability were understood as a tool to take missed opportunities throughout the existing condition of the Hunter Museum of Art and turn them into the generator for the conceptual and design development . Architecture, is then seen as an instrument that should speak to the user, reflecting the identity of the context its seating in, it should address the current issues, and furthermore, it should employ solutions to make the existing context better It should ultimately make the user feel that the architecture piece integrates seamlessly to the context, helping the user absorb with pleasure his experience between the confines of the architectural piece, and beyond.

public becomes a driver for the physical manifestation of the proposal.

T

he proposal for a scientific research institute in the nation's capital locates itself in the intersection between the two main typologies of its inmediate context, the national mall. The pragmatism of institutional architecture housing museums and other agencies addresses the program needs and constrains, and it's challenged through the playfulness of monuments and memorials for visitors, tourists, and locals alike. Engaging the public in an often sealed off programmatic environment was of vital importance. More so when the site is taken into consideration. Acting as a getway, not only to the national mall, but to a more public approach to the scientific fiel. The

tarting with two main volumes, these are sliced and shifted, and lifted in a series of operations to address the pedestrian flow around and thorugh the site, these volumes are reconnected through circulation bars and bridges that allow the constant communication between programs and people's activity both outside and inside the building. Brisging the gaps between public and private, local and tourists, interior and exterior, and institutional and civic monuments.

he circulation strategies employed in the proposal involve using the anchoring volumes as the main circulation. Both ends of the volumes are occupied by the egress and both fire stairs are connected by a series of platforms along which the vertical circulation is located. Elevators and freight elevators are distributed for each volume. By doing this, the volumes become independent from one another enhancing the conceptual reading of the project. In terms of accessibility, ramps are Located in the central public space allowing access for the shifted volumes. Also, at levels 06 + 09 are located 2 bridges which would Facilitate the circulation and integration of the program allowing for the public to occupy the proposal vertically, as well as creating collaborative spaces. T

he structural strategies employed in the proposal are the response of aseries of exploration at the conceptual level. The circulation volumes should act as the main system, therefore the development of a diagrid was imperative to carry the series of loads in an efficient manner. To help support the diagrid, the horizontal loads are carried through 2 ft. Thick post-tensioning concrete slabs. In terms of the vertical loads within the columes, a grid raging between 15 - 22.5 Ft is used, though at some specific moments those loads are transfered to other members through the slabs for the spatial integrity.

ocated inside of a quarry in lacoste, france, the artist studios were inspired by the provincial typology of the borie, a primitive hut that captures the genius loci of the place in its impresicion. By retrofitting the idea of the borie interlacing its vernacular character with the contrasting

sharpness of the site and contemporary construction technologies, the proposal would embrace the spirit of the place, of scad, and of art. The cluster, as a result, is seen as an architecture of extent instead of restraint, responding to the personal and individual character of the art-making process by generating experience, and ultimately, inspiration.

T

he life in primitive huts revolved around the hearth. It was symbolism of balance, warmth, an the axis mundi. Using the idea of the hearth of the hut, a core is erected in the quarry giving the cluser a vertical movement to experience the quarry in differnt directions. At the same

time leaving the floor open. The studios are then plugged-in into the core, and the cluster as a whole is also plugged-in into quarry itself. Therefore the public aspect of the program serve as the circulation core and gives another dimension on the experience and inspiration of the artists into and from the quarry.

T

he Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design partnered with City Park, New Orleans for the development of a student-led project that would benefit the waterfront of the bayou as well as the sport fields adjacent to the selected area. The initial process included an ethnographic research in order to propose a program attending the needs of current users + to attract new users to the area, as well as selecting the specific location for the intervention. The proposal aimed to create four main programmatic nodes. The articulation the entrance by creating a beacon, the creation of a gathering space drawing upon the existing trees and their canopies for shade and shelter, a pier over the water acting as a look-out point, fishing pier, bird watching pier, or a small crowd gathering space, and an art piece thay would create a corresponding relationship across the bayou. he formal manifestation is a hybrid of three initial proposals developed by smaller group of students. One scheme aimed to recognize and respond to natural conditions on the site altered by time by creating a screen that would filter the views and frameing a pier that extended into the water. Another scheme aimed to claim a piece of land perpendicular to the water edge in order to create a promenade to attract people into the main programmatic elements. The last scheme focused on dicoverability and the relationship across the bayou responding to the specific site conditions and activation both sides, instead of favouring one. The built intervention managed to exacerbate the underlying character of the site while creating new exeriences to engage the different uses ocurring in its surrounding, and furthermore creating a playfull overall experience by addressing both sides of the bayou. 31

T

he city of charleston, south carolina has played an important tole in the african-american history of the united states. Iaam is then understood as an element that brings together history, program, and place through the experiential aspect of architecture to celebrate not only the narative of the program, but of charleston as well. Using the physical and conceptual relationships between the city, program, and the harbor as a starting point, the constant communication between the two is explored through

the movement of the user through the site and architectural piece, the interplay between solidity, translucency, and transparency, as well as the concepts of geometry, disrruption, and directionality explored through the conceptual phase of the quilt, an african-american tradition in the south. As a result, iaam is an exploration on how the narratives of history an program inform the undrstanding of the built environment and visceversa, creating a series of experiences that conforms the identity of a culture, and of the city.

T

he triangual panels that function as the envelop of the building are polytetrafkuoethylene, a material that prevent direct sunlight from striking the faรงade and to limit direct sunlight gain by 50%. It also reduces glare, and improves daylight penetration. The skin shape is inspired by the oysters perched on the pylons of the harbor forming an encrustration that works independently

and changes the appearance of the pylons, while leaving intact the structure underneath. This helped the narrative of going from the solity to the transoarency as the user circulates through the different galleries, groing first through the galleries ith a slavery content, and ending in the abolition on the top galleries on the tower where the incrustration disappears so the users can enjoy the views and be reflect on the place, history, and culture as one. T

he proposal for a mixed-use residential building addresses and responds the transitional condition currently privailing in central city. The projects aim to be aware of the past, be inspired by the present, and providing opportuniries for the future through programatic elements, as well as architectural articulation. The formal response is nurtured by the building morphology of the neighborhood creating spaces that incentivate the creative nature of the new orlean's people. Progammaticallty, a day care and an after school mentorship program by in house artists is proposed, creating opportunities for people to grow, as well as to incentivate artists to move into the neighborhood and develop their career here, providing active spaces that promote the community environment that artist often strive in. Thus, the proposal provide spaces to learn, live, and create, where architecture takes an active roll in each role, as well as the connection or transition between them.

THE CIRCULATION ADDS AN OPPORTUNITY TO INCLUDE VARIATION ON THE RESIDENTIAL SCHEME. RESPONDING TO THE CHARACTER AND SCALE OF EUTERPE ST. THE UNITS FACING THIS SIDE WOULD BE WALK-UPS WITH A DIRECT ACCESS FROM THE ST. ON THE OTHER HAND, ON BARONNE ST. THE CONFIGURATION REQUIRES A SINGLE LOADED CORRIDOR AND CREATES MOMENTS WHEN IT TURNS INTO A DOUBLE LOADED CORRIDER WHEN THE VERTICAL VOLUMES TOUCH THE HORIZONTAL CIRCULATION. The parameters of this quarter's project was to develop a proposal responding to the architectural national identity of switzerland while taking into consideration the concepts of reflection, relaxation, and rejuvenation. This was an opportunity to create an impact in the life of people through architecture. The official website of the swiss department of human rights addresses the overcrowding of prisons as a recurrent problem on switzerland's judicial system since 2006. It also mentions that

the european committee for the prevention of torture and human degrading treatment or punishment have been actively requesting the inclusion of therapeutical programs and other treatments in order to provide more adequate institutions. By combining these two aspects lies an opportunity to push the boundaries of architecture and the proposed program's essence [a prison] while exploring alternatives for atypical methods of incarceration.

ABSTRACT :: For some countries, terror has been an inherent concept in the formation and transformation of their urban condition. 1959 marked a turning point in the history of the Cuban territory. With the coup of the Cuban Revolution and the beginning of the Castro dominance, a control over the territory and the urban fabric became in effect alongside the exercise of political power. The display of control on the built environment was the tool used to impose the new political system across the island at a faster rate. In response to the frugality consequential of the new political system, a survival phenomenon spontaneously arose as Cuban families struggled with the economic models of the island. Many have had to develop a second means of income by either growing and selling produce or livestock. Urban and rural conditions present a different set of challenges that can potentially be addressed and engaged through architecture, urbanism, and the public realm. Holguin, the capital city of the Province of Holguin, is further known as the city of parks/ plazas. The inhabitation of these public spaces have experienced a fast paced transformation within the last 3-4 years, much due to recent public accessibility to the internet. Parks have

become places of interaction, of connection and reconnection, not only at a personal, but a virtual scale. This phenomenon have made people take a stand and reclaim their city. Although, Holguin's parks/plazas are being refurbished, planning deficencies evidence a lack of engagement to the changes that society is experimenting by the porosity of the blockade. Public spaces that respond to their actual flux of information, and the interaction of the different spontaneous phenomena coexisting in Cuban territory is required in order to provide healthy communities that aid its people to achieve a better quality of life as the country keeps transitioning. In a metaphysical way, architecture is the bonding element that facilitates the regeneration of healthy environments through community engagement.

THESIS STATEMENT :: Historically, some political systems have utilized urbanism and the public realm as tools for propelling political agendas. Through a Public Interest Design approach, architectural strategies premised on tactical urbanism and social engagement have the potential of reclaiming public space from the grasp of agents of power, and return it to the communities for their betterment.

olguin’ss parks are embedded in the collective memory, and cultural identity of its people. Throughout history, each one have performed a specific role in the sustenance of its people. Acting as a backbone, these parks define not only Holguin’s urban character, but its cultural and social growth through a series of pockets in its main urban corridor. The recent public accessibility to the World Wide Web in selective public spaces, have allowed people to experience the city and its public spaces in a new manner. This phenomenon gives a way for their redevelopment, not only as spaces of connectivity and information, but as spaces of production at various levels. This can be achieved by activating not one, but all of the parks in a series of programmatic interventions creating a network (hub to

sattelite relation) that aims to engage community at different scales and broadening their impact in the social, economic, and cultural development of the city.

T

o provide spaces that respond to the cultural economies taking place as a result of the economic crisis. Using Havana as a case study, where urban lots and Seed Houses were developed as production spaces to aid the development of society during the Special Perdiod. Also, by understanding urban public space as the prime space for social interaction. Through the study of current uses ranging from leisure, cultural events, to digital connectivity, as well as the development of new uses give a way for an integral transformation of the parks. Recently available digital technologies should play an emergent role in urban and social transformation.

S

avannah, GA, is well known by it's urban grid designed by James Edward Oglethorpe who founded the Georgia Colony, and the town of Savannah in 1733. His masterplan was named after him, and the Oglethorpe Plan has been well studied as a precedent to follow. The plan sought to create a balance in the ratio of town lots vs. urban lots which lead to the development of a module repeated accross town 24 times. The layout was built around a square which would facilitate sun, and wind to permeate the city as well as creating public spaces for its inhabitants. Parallel to the square lots for commercial and/or institutional spaces were created, and residential lots were created perpendicularly to create a balance not only between the natural and the built environment, but between building typologies and usage as well.

T

oday, the squares laid out in the 1730s have become the symbol of the city. Attrcting not only tourists, but architects and urban planners that want to visit and learn from such a successful plan. However, there is no documentation on how the squares are used, or visited, which means that the city is marketing itself blindly without any documentation of its success or lack of altogether. Algorithms and parametric engines and models have the potential of crossing the bridge between the digital and physical realms to extract information from today's public realm, social media.

B

y using Grasshopper and Mosquito, the Geolocation of social media users who have documented their visits to the savannah squares can be tracked and mapped. By creating a visial output of that data, more information about the usage of the squares understood at a macro scale as well as a micro scale (in comparison to one another), will become available to move forward the marketing of the city with pertinent information that comes from the users itself. Today's technology is relying on the mediatic phenomena to gather information that can become relevant in the pursuit of a common goal and people, as well as entities should take advantage of that in order to make desicions that benefit the people they serve.

T

his excercise was seen as an opportunity to explore with some of the components and techniques discussed in class. By overlaying and manipulating different components and parameters, a wide variety of iterations were created. The explorations were focused on the

concepts of height, weight, rotation, morphing, count, step, and domain to achieve variations withing the original scheme. The final selection was based on the two extremes of variations, and a middle ground that proved the most success in the process.

Residual spaces are left-over spaces of the process of urbanization of a place. These spaces are usually categorized as un-safe, un-productive spaces. Residual spaces have a prominent presence in the urban fabric of a city, therefore, design strategies should be employed to the betterment of these spaces and to their inclusion the the network of public spaces that serve the inhabitants of a city. The portion of I-10 underpass between Tulane Ave. and Canal St. present the coexistence of three differing conditions for these residual spaces. The aim of this study is to understand each of the conditions independently from one another, in relation to rest, and in relation to the context in order to analyze the contextual cues that allow these uses to happen. Also, by studying the impact of these residual spaces in the circulation patterns of the urban fabric, one can begin to understand how people react to these spaces, thus creating a framework for the advocacy of better design of the residual spaces of urbanization in new Orleans.

he Albert and Tina Small Center for Collaborative Design is the Tulane School of Architecture community design center focusing on public interest design and education. Currently issues of affordable housing and advocacy are being explored. A need for affordable housing in the city of New Orleans is very evident, with zoning ordinances limiting the density of residential developments, affordabilty is rapidly becoming a necessity. An initial exploration of different neighborhoods (on the left) was made to understand how the zoning codes have change and to establish a framework upon which to build the study from. After the initial study, a more in depth study of the neighborhood of TremĂŠLafitte is currently in development for the advocacy of affordable housing and more density in the neighborhood with the hopes that this excercise becomes a model for subsequent studies in different neighborhood.
