Dear Reader, This October marks the one year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, a storm that took everything from some of our local families and community members. Halloween happenings and events were cancelled all over the city and replaced by destroyed homes and gas shortages, leaving many community members to struggle still to this day. As we enter October, I ask that you reflect on this time and remember that there are others still in need and suffering from this terrible disaster. Though we have not commemorated the storm in this issue, we have not forgotten what it took from our community and ask that you enjoy this season and celebrate the work that we, as a community, have done to rebuild.

Happy Halloween!

8 To the possible dismay of the single artsy hipster set, Williamsburg Brooklyn is no longer only for them, but hundreds of budding families. Each year, Williamsburg’s family population keeps growing and with it comes a wonderful array of resources. Williamsburg is split into several parts; north side, south side and east end (East Williamsburg) and no matter which area you hail from, parents can find just about everything they need right outside their front door. Visiting Williamsburg with your kids? Then you will be able to enjoy indoor play spaces, parks, food festivals, and more. Check out our list of kid friendly resources in Williamsburg.

Williamsburg has two wonderful places to check out films with your children. Nitehawk Cinemas hosts regular family friendly screenings that even include baby friendly movie screenings, while Videology, a local screening room, hosts weekly screenings of old school Sesame Street shows for only $2 per child. Brooklyn Bowl hosts family days at their popular bowling alley where children have plenty of space to run around and play while practicing their bowling skills.
Puppetsburg A PUPPET SHOW THAT BRINGS TOGETHER LOCAL ARTISTS TO CREATE AN EDGY, HIGHLY CONTEMPORARY PUPPET SHOW FOR THE LITTLEST OF AUDIENCES. Looking for a puppet show or theater experience to expose your child to, but worried they are still too young? Puppetsburg is what you are looking for! It is a unique puppet show created with babies & toddlers in mind. We all know young children are wiggly and not ready to sit in their seats as mere spectators and Puppetsburg is interactive so children can move about freely participating in the whole experience. The shows change weekly so you can keep going back for more. When we visited the show, the storyline was that the puppet Clementine became slowly consumed by technology! She used her iPod, watched a ”chick flick” and then went on Facebook. During all this, she missed out on several play dates with her friends. The kids were able to touch and say hello to the puppets at certain points of the show and the babies and toddlers were enthusiastic and engaged throughout. The show uses locally crafted puppets to promote social skills, environmental, and safety awareness in their story lines and the kids get to know these original puppet characters, created by artist Lauren Maul of Park Slope. One of the puppets, Piggy B, is a hipster pig with oversized glasses & an ”over it” look on his face! The Founder Sarah Todes started her own company Puppetsburg and the show brought local artists together to

For practically every Birthday, holiday, or special occasion, I was on a massive hunt to find my daughter a super cute tutu. So, I decided to get in touch with my crafty side and started making tutus myself, for fun, on my spare time.” When not being a devoted mom and tutu maker, Kimberly works at Project Achieve recruiting volunteers for ongoing HIV prevention research studies. MY DAD MAKES
NIGHTMARES Growing Up With Special Effects Expert A.S. Hamilton. Long before the internet and computer animation in films, there was special effects makeup. Special effects artists make us believe the unbelievable, see the un-seeable, and bring to life the characters that live in our nightmares and under our beds. They have been the unsung heroes of film since the beginning of cinematic history. They created the faces for many iconic monsters such as the Mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein and the Werewolf. These skilled craftsmen are a small, select group of people with many talents that range from applying hair to a monster one thread at a time, to sculpting the perfect likeness of a dead president. Their workbenches are covered with the scraps of movies past, layered with fake blood, latex rubber and all manner of paint and pigment. OFFSPRiiNG was able to catch up with the daughter of special effects artist, A.S. Hamilton, to chat about the art, blood, and gore of special effects makeup from her perspective.

Yes, for the most part. I taught myself how to use a sewing machine and how to play the drums. I also taught myself how to use a professional camera and I enjoy taking pictures of my friends. HAS YOUR DAD TAUGHT YOU ANY OF HIS TRICKS? He didn’t really teach me, I learned by observing what he did and imitating it. Whenever I was in his shop, I would watch what he was doing or sometimes he would use me as a model, that’s how I learned. I know how to make my skin look like it is peeling off, by using Elmer’s glue and foundation. I also know how to use a welding torch to heat up metal.

Inflate and Create THE ART AND DESIGN BEHIND THE
BROOKLYN BALLOON COMPANY
27
Two years ago the Brooklyn Balloon Company was created by company founder Robert Moy, who lives with his wife and six year-old son, in Brooklyn. With a background in fashion, art, and design Robert creates balloon sculptures that amuse children and adults alike. Balloon twisting is this father’s new-found profession. He can create anything from miniature cars and wearable butterfly wings to giant balloon sculptures and Star Wars light sabers. Robert is a natural entertainer, who gives back to his community by volunteering his ballooning talents for events at New York City public schools and non-profits such as the Red Cross and the Center for Domestic Violence. Only a short time after this new and innovative business hit the streets, the company has expanded it’s services to include face painting and been hailed as some of the best children’s entertainment in New York City. We caught up with this awesome dad and business owner to ask a few questions about what inspires him to do this work and how he enjoys living in the city with his child. HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? “My family went to my wife’s company holiday party two and a half years ago and my son and I were captivated by a balloon artist there. It was a first for us seeing someone make more advanced balloons. Afterwards, we hired someone for my son’s 4th birthday party who got me interested enough to attend balloon twisting workshops. I thought balloons could be a perfect medium for me to incorporate my background in fashion, art and design along with entertaining kids.” WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO MAKE THESE BALLOONS? “I am inspired by kids! Who wouldn’t want to make kids laugh and have fun? The designer in me also wants to make super cool looking balloons! The same goes for face painting, which the company also does, and I like to keep my designs modern.” WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO IN NYC WITH YOUR SON? “We love going to the Children’s Museum of the Arts in West Village, Jane’s Carousel in Dumbo, Smorgasburg in Williamsburg and the Central Park Zoo.” YOU HAVE EXPANDED YOUR SERVICES TO INCLUDE VERY COOL FACE PAINTING! IS THAT SOMETHING PEOPLE CAN HIRE YOUR COMPANY TO DO WITHOUT BALLOON SERVICES? “Because we are so busy as a company, I am not able to do all of the face painting on my own, but I have two awesome face painters who work with me to keep the design vision and aesthetic the same. A person can hire the Brooklyn Balloon Factory to do just balloons or face painting, or both if they like.”
