2013 ANNUAL REPORT
ALL BECAUSE OF YOU!
2013 was MAM‘s 30th anniversary year. We celebrated all year long to remind ourselves of the substantial heritage passed on by our founding congregations and volunteers. We recognized that the founding principle of helping our neighbors has given us a legacy of great trust in the community and we pledged to continue to uphold that trust through our next era. We look forward to continuing to shape our programming to respond to the needs of those who are less fortunate. As we reflect and report on the past year, it is apparent that 2013 was the year that our investments in programs to help families become more economically stable started to show great results. After years of planning and creating new programming and even adding 17,000 square feet to accommodate additional classrooms, a computer lab and offices, the numbers of clients who accessed English as a Second Language classes and Employment Services soared. Students eager to improve their English skills found their way to MAM to be able to be promoted in their workplace, speak to their children’s school teachers, become citizens and set a good example for their families. Unemployed workers at the end of their rope came to MAM and found emotional support, guidance for the job search, a better understanding of how to compete in the job market and for many, job offers. Thank you for all the support that has allowed us to not only keep families in their homes, in school and at work through our assistance programs, but also offer a hand up to those who need it. I invite you to see what MAM clients have achieved with the help of their neighbors in 2013.

IN NOVEMBER 2013,
three families from one apartment complex came to MAM for help after they had lost all their belongings in a building fire. When they came to our office, they had only the clothes on their backs. MAM helped all three families with rent assistance and clothing vouchers until they were able to find another apartment complex to live in and land back on their feet.
ROBERTO is one of our most dedicated ESL students. He dreams of owning an air conditioning repair business, and he would like to be able to communicate with his clients. Roberto registered for three classes in order to maximize his English practice throughout the week. He is taking morning classes at John Knox Presbyterian Church two days a week and evening classes at Fair Haven United Methodist Church. Roberto is now attending Level 3 ESL classes.
BARBARA suffered a broken arm and was unable to work. She works in a deli and spends the better part of her day making sandwiches, working the cash register, and operating the slicing machine. Because she injured her arm at home, she did not qualify for worker’s compensation, and was also not allowed to return to work until she was cleared by a doctor. Barbara was unable to earn her usual hourly wages and fell behind on her rent, but she only needed an extra $150 to avoid eviction. MAM was able to provide Barbara with rent assistance to keep her and her children from becoming homeless.
ERICA came to MAM two years ago to receive help in Employment Services. She had been a stay-at-home wife with three children, but circumstances changed and she had to find work. Erica had no prior work experience and wanted to learn what was expected of her during a job interview. She came to MAM weekly and worked very hard to earn a certificate from the Employment Certification Program. Thanks to MAM, Erica now works full-time as a teacher’s aide and also has a part-time job.
