FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Recently, a student group from University of Houston’s Bauer School of Business conducted a marketing project for MAM. Their presentation began with one student’s story: “My name is Eddie and my family moved to Houston when I was in the second grade. The other kids in my class were on step 7 and I couldn’t find my way to step 1. I was miserable. Then my teacher discovered I could not see clearly. She knew my parents would not be able to afford a visit to an eye doctor or eyeglasses, so she told my mother about MAM and everything changed. MAM paid for my doctor visit and eyeglasses. I could see and I could learn.” He then pointed to the screen with a photo of himself in the 2nd grade having his eyesight tested. Eddie is now 22 years old and will soon graduate with a degree in Finance and dreams for a Master’s degree in Business. MAM’s mission was alive and well and right in front of me – a young man who would be able to take care of himself and his family, who discovered that not only could he see, but loved learning. Now he is giving back to an organization that helped him and his family. You help Eddie and thousands like him every year. I invite you to take a look at our Annual Report and see just how much you helped Houston in 2014. Because of your gifts, over 5,000 families had the means to meet their basic needs through rental and utility assistance, case management, employment services, learning English, mental health counseling and more. Eddie said “Kindness has no language” because it is offered and understood by all. Thank you for your kindness.

MAM STORIES is a recently widowed senior citizen and her income is not enough to cover her daily expenses. Jean filed for widow benefits, but the process took 45-60 days. In the meantime, MAM helped her with rent and utility bills until she received widow benefits. She was referred for counseling, financial, and legal services so she can plan her will and learn how to manage her finances now that her husband is not with her.

is a single mom of three young children who worked cleaning offices. The late evening hours took her away from her children and the chemicals used in her work caused health problems, so she turned to MAM for help with medical prescriptions. Brenda was afraid to look for another job until her MAM caseworker encouraged her to enroll in the Employment Certification Program. After graduating, Brenda accepted a new job as a dispatcher at a logistics firm. She now spends her evenings with her children and she is healthy!
