FROM VERTICAL TO HORIZONTAL…

Cerro Torre

THE IMPOSSIBLE MOUNTAIN. The granite mountain on the Argentinian-Chilean border is regarded as one of the toughest peaks in the world, due to its sheer, smooth walls and often adverse weather conditions. Up until 1970, it was even reputed to be the “impossible mountain”. Cesare Maestri was first to conquer the mountain, with the help of a compressor and around 300 bolts – an approach that is still controversial in the mountaineering world today. By free climbing Cerro Torre along the legendary Compressor Route, the Mammut Proteam athlete David Lama has written a piece of mountaineering history. He is the first climber ever to have achieved the feat of scaling the south-east face of the imposing granite formation without technical aids. Watch out for the movie due for release in January 2014…

Peter Ortner

VERTICAL ADVENTURES. From shepherd’s helper to extreme climber: Peter Ortner was born in Lienz in 1983. Even as a young boy of 12, he could never resist the lure of the mountains around his home. By the time he was 18, climbing had become a passion and Peter quickly realized that mountaineering was what he wanted to do. Mountaineering in all shapes and forms. From rock climbing to ice and mixed climbing in the winter. Since then, hardly a year has passed without various expeditions around the world in search of vertical adventures. 2012 was a particularly spectacular year. Peter’s very first expedition of 2012 was a trip to Patagonia, where he climbed the Compressor route on Cerro Torre with David Lama. In the summer, his next project then took him to the other side of the world. The dream team of Peter and David made their way over the Baltoro Glacier towards Trango Tower to climb their next granite giant. With the ascent of the “Eternal Flame” safely in the bag, they continued to the Chogolisa Base Camp at the furthest end of the Baltoro Glacier at 5,000 meters. “I must admit that never before had I climbed a mountain as arduous as this, yet standing on the summit was one of the most amazing experiences ever. At 7,668 meters, we found ourselves looking out onto a panorama of 8,000 meter peaks.” www.peterortner.at
