Mammut Testevent
Mountain safety is a topic that concerns us all. Freeriders from all over the world gathered for the great freeride event under the motto “Snow Safety” in order to test the new Mammut snow collection. More than 4000 applicants wanted to test the functionality of the jackets and improve their safety expertize at the same time. Unfortunately, only 200 were able to participate. Amir Fazlic from Bosnia belonged to the lucky ones: “It’s cool to see just how much fun this kind of safety training can be!”

The program was packed as full as an expedition s a b backpack. With workshops, competitions and presentations, and the active involvement of all participants. As soon as photographer Röbi Bösch is ready, 200 freeriders tear down the hill, but the light isn’t quite right yet. Everyone back up again. What a relief that the Melchsee-Frutt lift company is paying for all rides. OK, second attempt. Great – picture captured. Let’s call it a day! Everyone has earned the fire-roasted meat and vegetable skewers and fondues. Simon, the fire artist, presents his show and “No way out” rock the tent. Drinks are served at the igloo bar and Röbi shows pictures of a world tour to the applause of the crowd. What a day. What a night. www.mammut.ch/basecamp 1900 m | Melchsee-Frutt | Obwalden | Switzerland

Mammut Safety Check
Safety Training for Man and Dog. Mammut is committed to snow safety. By developing innovative clothing such as the Asiago and Diamond Jackets, as well as effective safety technology. The PULSE Barryvox avalanche probe and shovel are important companions when mountain slopes tantalize you with untouched, deep powder snow. One thing was clear during the safety check at Melchsee-Frutt, the participants should be involved too. An exciting day with top-class safety workshops awaited them. Including: Stephan Harvey from the Institute for Avalanche Research, tour planning with Mountain Reality and the Mammut safety workshop. During the outdoor avalanche training in the mountains, our four-legged friends demonstrated what they are capable of. As a reward for every dug-up participant, they received a tasty little treat.

Safety in Your Mobile
Systematic Shoveling
The new Mammut safety application for the iPhone and iPod includes a clinometer and altimeter, a compass and links to all avalanche bulletins worldwide. Hold the iPhone parallel to the slope to display the approximate angle. Together with an avalanche status report, the angle of the slope, the slope exposure and altitude are important factors when properly assessing the avalanche risk. Download for iPhone and iPod in the AppStore – more information at www.mammut.ch/safetyapp
The minutes tick past relentlessly. After 15 minutes the chances of survival of a buried victim drop dramatically. In particular the shoveling eats up time. The right method, the V-shaped conveyor belt approach, makes shoveling faster and more effective. In 2004, avalanche rescue instructor Manuel Genswein investigated the most effective shoveling method.
Probe light (240 cm) Dyneema cord | Telescopic locking | Special packing with instructions and emergency plan
A field test in Norway has now shown: regardless of how deep the victim is buried and the angle of the slope, the conveyor band strategy comes out best. In addition to the PULSE Barryvox and a shovel, Genswein recommends that people going on tours should also carry a probe. “It can make the difference between life and death.”

Marcel Meier Avalanche dog handler How long does it take to train a dog? 2 years. When he’s three years old, he’s ready to start work. How do you motivate the dogs? The dog is rewarded with a piece of sausage when he finds a buried person. He is actually looking for the sausage, not for the person. What did you pay attention to when you buried people under snow during the testevent? The person in the hole had to have a radio, a PULSE Barryvox and a shovel in case of any difficulties.

Stephan Harvey WSL Swiss Federal Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF What is the most important aspect when assessing a slope? To follow the so-called 3x3 method: Preparation using the avalanche bulletin (www.slf.ch). Local assessment of weather and risks. Assessing for each individual slope: how steep is it; where could I trigger an avalanche; can I use suitable tactics to reduce the avalanche risk? Remember: the best protection from avalanches is to avoid triggering them in the first place! When does it become dangerous? Fresh snow, strong winds and high temperatures generally increase the avalanche risk. Also, the steeper the slope, the greater the danger!

What do you need to remember when using the Barryvox? To work calmly and deliberately. All searchers must first switch to “search” before they start. Should everyone search at the same time? It is better if just a few people search while the others are ready to start shoveling. Shoveling takes a lot of time and effort. What does snow safety mean to you? Training with the equipment and of course carrying it with me. However, the most important thing is saying “No” at the right time, no matter how tantalizing the slope is.

Mammut Alpine Clothing
Thought Through down to the Last Fiber. If you are pushing yourself to the limits, you can expect the same from your clothes. Mammut has used the electrospinning process to develop a breathable, waterproof membrane. Sweat is rapidly transported to the outer layer. A revolutionary method that ensures 100% water- and windproofness, while still guaranteeing maximum breathability.
Jean-Pierre Damerau Mountain Reality What does snow safety mean to you? Being properly prepared. From the terrain, the choice of route to the correct equipment – safety does not start in the mountains, but rather in your own living room. Some people feel safe because they are carrying their PULSE Barryvox. A PULSE Barryvox is not a talisman that protects you from avalanches. In an emergency it is essential for survival, but ideally you should never be caught in such a situation in the first place.

Sander Kuik Netherlands The testevent took place under the banner of snow safety. What does this mean to you? Everything we did here. Avalanche searches, avalanche burial. This is im portant because more and more people are skiing away from prepared pistes. Do you know avalanche assessment methods? Yes, I’ve used them before and I’m also friends with a mountain guide from South Tyrol. I practice searching with the PULSE Barryvox at least once a year.

Queen Maudland Antarctic
The Antarctica Expedition.
In November 2008 we left for the Antarc tic. Unsettled weather and temperatures ranging from –30° to –50° dominated our expedition. We climbed the 750-metre high Holtanna west face, but our free climbing ambitions were crushed due to the icy temperatures. It was cold and more difficult than we had expected. The first ascent of the west face would nonetheless turn out to be a success in
our mountaineering career. “Eiszeit” – 24 pitch route and climbing grades of up to 7+ and technical grades of up to A4. We completed the first free ascent of the Holtanna one week later via the north pillar. The final target was the Ulvetanna peak. We climbed it in just two days via the north-west pillar. The first ascent of “Sound of Silence” 8–/A2 was the greatest expedition of our mountaineering career. More reports: www.stephan-siegrist.ch
