Mammut Testevent
Showdown in the North Face Arena. Not for fair-weather mountaineers: the exciting Testevent for the new Mammut Eiger Extreme top range. Experienced and proven mountaineers from all over the world were invited to test the new collection. Their goal: to put the collection through its paces during an ascent in icy cold conditions and, in the ice field at the peak of the North Face of the Eiger, to form a large “X”. The sign for Extreme …

At 5 a.m. sharp, top mountaineers from Slovenia, the USA, Austria, Germany and Switzerland set out for the Eiger. The ice and snow conditions were fantastic and they made rapid progress over the western flank up to the ice field at the peak of the North Face of the Eiger. Unsurprisingly, skyrunner Josh Wharton was first to the top (and back down again). Johann Kaufmann had already outlined the planned “X” using fixed ropes. Everyone quickly took up their positions and photographer Röbi Bösch photographed the new key visual at least 1,000 times from the helicopter. An event for X-treme fun all round. For more information: www.mammut.ch/testevent An omen perhaps?
We’re hanging on …
… and Robert Bösch looks on.
The Wall is marked out.
Eiger Extreme
Past the Death Bivouac and Traverse of the Gods to the summit. The Eiger North Face is the embodiment of Extreme. On the second ice field, the Traverse of the Gods or the Spider, humans and equipment are put through harrowing tests. The Eiger Extreme collection has been developed for times like these. The abrasion-resistant textiles and new combinations of materials are exceptionally light, withstand extreme mechanical strains and offer maximum protection against climatic influences.

A new record on the North Face of the Eiger For some, it’s the nightmare of the Alps, for others it’s their greatest aim. No other rock face polarises quite as much as the Eiger North Face. The best mountaineers in the world come to Grindelwald to pit themselves against it. In 1938, the first ascent took the climbers four days. Today, the speed record set by the Swiss mountaineer and Mammut Pro Team athlete Daniel Arnold stands at 2 hours 28 minutes. He has shaved 20 minutes off Ueli Steck’s previous record to become the new speed record holder on the Eiger.

Climbing has continuously developed. As is also demonstrated by more than thirty new routes, for example “Magic Mushroom”. 20 pitches, 600 meters of climbing, a difficulty rating of 7c and, as the reward, the breathtaking freedom on the steepest mushroom in the world. This progress would not have been possible without the equally rapid development of materials. Mammut is playing a leading role in this area, and with the Eiger Extreme collection is confirming its commitment to uncompromising quality and innovation. For more information: www.mammut.ch/extreme

Start
“The initial difficulty was overcoming the formidable mythology of the North Face. The Eiger’s grim aura is so strong that it inspires fear in even the best and strongest.” Jon Krakauer, Eiger Dreams

Summit ice field
“Finally we were no longer overwhelmed by the mass of the black wall above our heads and glimpsed more sky. It was a joy to be able to climb, relax and gain a foothold on the ice and snow field leading up to the summit ridge.”
Reinhard Karl, Erlebnis Berg
Anne Sauvy, Pierre Leroux, Guide
Stollenloch
“The Stollenloch window, the traditional escape route from the Wall for parties in distress. An unbelievably strange feeling of contrast. From rain driven by the wind into an electrically illuminated science-fiction cavern with the unbelievable moaning of the wind.”
Second ice field
“On the second ice field, we were moving in the center of the arena. We weren’t on a ‘death wall’, but were moving in a dead zone. While everyday life carried on mundanely below, we were completely reliant on ourselves.” Nordwand Jacket and Pants Abrasion-resistant, high-altitude touring and ski touring outfit made from waterproof and elastic Gore-Tex -T ® Pro Shell® material. The -Tex jacket with an adjustable hood ensures a perfect fit with or without a helmet.
Douglas Haston, In High Places
9
Mittellegi Ridge
“Despite the fresh snow, sheer ice shimmered. Through gaps in the fog, we looked down to the tiny houses of Grindelwald. One last push on reluctant ankles and muscles and we were standing on the sharp line of the Mittellegi Ridge.”
Trion Nordwand | Nordwand Glove
Hermann Buhl, Achttausend drüber und drunter

Gore® X-trafit™ technology, active moisture transport prevents rapid chilling.

Death Bivouac
“Rusty hooks, decayed ropes, everything at our breakfast location reminded us that success and safety are endangered as soon as summit progress falters on this bleak and murderous wall.” Gaston Rébuffat, Étoiles et tempêtes
3
First ice field
“I was approaching the ice field when I heard a booming salvo. There was just enough time for me to take cover in the Swallow’s Nest. The volley of stones whistled over my head and I continued my ascent to the first ice field where shiny ice was now visible.” Walter Bonatti, I giorni grandi
Nordwand TL The crampon-compatible boot for expeditions, classic high-altitude tours, ice and mixed climbing. Brimming with innovations, including Base Fit®, Easy Entry System, Speed Lace System, Power Strap and carbon insole.
6
“A snowy dome emerged immediately in front of us. The summit. And as we took it all in, we stood there and shook hands. We had done it, made the Eiger our own.”
Chris Bonington, I Chose to Climb
Kurt Diemberger, Gipfel und Geheimnisse
7 Photos: Jost von Allmen
Traverse of the Gods
“We approached the Traverse of the Gods, a series of boulder-strewn ledges clinging onto to the vertical wall. We heard the melancholy melodies of the cows and the rattling of the cog railway. This emphasised our isolation more than the most remote mountain could have done.” Spider
“The steep patch of firn or ice in the middle of the summit wall is known as the ‘Spider’ due to the cracks radiating out from all sides of the snow field, like legs and tentacles. The Spider can be a deadly combination of snow, ice and rock. If you are surprised by bad weather, there’s no escape.” Heinrich Harrer, Die Weisse Spinne

Scotland? They only have hills over there. The highest mountain is just 1,344 meters. However, the more we looked into it, the more interesting the prospect became. We therefore decided to (Stephan Siegrist, Michi Wärthl, Thomas Senf, Mario Arnold, Stephan Ruoss and Dani Arnold) to fly to Scotland in February. The people were friendly and the scenery was truly beautiful. It certainly left us in no doubt that even small mountains can be difficult too! It’s unbelievable how many difficult routes there are, all without bolts. All climbers should strive to accept and respect this ethic.

Safety Technology
Maximum safety for maximum freedom. Safety for the entire group. The fundamentals are good route planning, knowledge about avalanches and proper conduct on the mountains. The Mammut avalanche airbag prevents the personal risk of burial and therefore acts as a preventive measure. For efficient rescues, the PULSE or ELEMENT Barryvox速, an avalanche probe and shovel are essential.
ELEMENT Barryvox速 Digital 3-antenna device pared down to the essentials. The ELEMENT Barryvox速 stands out thanks to its ease-of-use and clear instructions. Its one-button operation and clearly laid-out display make the device very user-friendly. Rapid, precise location is guaranteed, even for less experienced users.

The biggest peak project in history. Mammut is celebrating a birthday. On the world’s most beautiful peaks. Mountaineers from all over the world are warmly invited to celebrate with us. The ascent of the peaks is the real celebration: 150 rope teams are climbing 150 peaks all over the world within a period of one year. Equipped with the new anniversary collection and led by IFMGA-certified mountain guides, they will make their summit dreams come true. The Mammut Anniversary Basecamp launched the celebrations for our 150th anniversary, and the ascent of the Jungfrau in August 2011 marked the first of the 150 peaks. However, as well as creating some unforgettable experiences for the peak climbers in our anniversary year, we also want to transmit values such as solidarity, team spirit and rope teams. Each of Mammut’s anniversary actions is helping to support the IFMGA, to assist mountain guides from emerging nations and guarantee the safe ascent of the 150 summits in the biggest peak project in history.
Mountain sport in book form To celebrate its 150th anniversary, Mammut has compiled 150 stories by wellknown authors on the topics of alpinism and outdoor sports. This fascinating collection of words and images provides an insight into mountain sports of the past and future.
