About the Isle of Man The Isle of Man is the ideal location for establishing or relocating a business due to its position as an innovative financial centre offering low taxation in an excellent regulatory regime.
Location
The Economy
The Isle of Man is situated at the heart of the British Isles in the middle of the Irish Sea between Ireland (31 miles) and the United Kingdom (31 miles). The island is 33 miles long and 13 miles wide with a population of approximately 85,000 residents.
The Isle of Man economy has seen 29 years of continued economic growth (as at the 2011/2012 financial year).
The Isle of Man is a beautiful island with unspoilt beaches, mountainous countryside, sweeping coastline and bustling townscapes. Such scenery has provided many a backdrop for the film industry in recent years, the island having doubled as Cornwall, Yorkshire, Norfolk, Hampshire, Brighton and even the Caribbean.
Background
The Island's Government has positively encouraged economic growth in recent years by creating a favourable tax regime and suitable legislative framework for expansion. The Isle of Man is an established and respected international finance centre, built on political and fiscal stability, low taxation and a fully supported modern infrastructure. The endorsement of the Isle of Man as a leading finance centre has again been evidenced by Standard and Poor's sovereign rating of AA and the white listing by the OECD.
The island is a self-governing dependent territory of the British Crown which is not part of the United Kingdom, but for which the Crown has the responsibility for ensuring the good government of the island and for its external affairs, but the Island's democratically elected government exercises full control of its internal affairs and territorial waters. By long standing convention, the UK Government does not legislate for the Island except with the specific consent of the Island's Government.
The key sector which has contributed to this growth has been in financial services, and to encourage diversification sectors have been promoted including film and television, shipping and aircraft management, e-commerce and internet businesses coexisting with traditional industries such as tourism, fishing and agriculture.
The High Court of Tynwald is the Parliament of the Isle of Man, is over 1,000 years old and is considered to be the oldest Parliament in the world with unbroken existence.
Quality of Life The Isle of Man has remained in the fortunate position of being able to offer affordable high quality commercial and residential accommodation in an open and spacious environment whilst many other offshore jurisdictions have become expensive and overcrowded. The island has an exceptional health system, high education standards, and excellent transportation links and communication systems and whilst being a modern progressive environment maintains a traditional independence and proud heritage.

Taxation

Personal Income Tax
Corporation Tax
The island has its own income tax and customs and excise framework and is independent from the United Kingdom in respect of direct taxation. Income tax is low, the standard rate being 10% and the higher rate being 20% and recently the Isle of Man Government revised the tax cap which provides that an individual's tax liability is limited to £120,000 (£240,000 for jointly assessed married couples or civil partners) irrespective of income generated per tax year payable annually over five consecutive tax years. There are also generous personal allowances.
The standard rate of corporate income tax in the Isle of Man is 0% and 10% received by a company from any of the following sources:
5
banking business land and property in the Isle of Man (including property development, residential and commercial rental or property letting and mining & quarrying)
There are also no stamp duties, capital gains tax, wealth tax, capital transfer tax, inheritance tax or death duty imposed in the Isle of Man.
VAT The Isle of Man benefits from a special relationship with the European Union which allows the streamlined movement of goods between the Island and the Union. The Isle of Man is the only offshore financial centre where zero tax rate companies may operate within the European Union VAT system and trade freely within the European Union. Businesses trading in the Isle of Man may apply to register for VAT in the Isle of Man providing that they can show that day to day management and control of the business is effected from the Island. Once VAT-registered, any Isle of Man business is subject to the normal UK/EU VAT rules. Registration for VAT is compulsory for companies making taxable supplies which at the end of any month, the total value of taxable supplies made during the preceding 12 months (on a rolling 12-month basis) exceeds £81,000. Also, should a company expect that the value of taxable supplies within a 30 day period will exceed £81,000, then registration will be necessary. The VAT rate currently stands at 20% .

Isle of Man Companies Isle of Man company law has for a large part followed the English and Welsh company law equivalent and the numerous Companies Acts from 1931 to 2004 the 1931-2004 Companies have modelled themselves on this. In order to compete in an expanding global marketplace, the Isle of Man Government introduced new corporate legislation in 2006 with the introduction of 2006 Act Companies, to complement the existing company legislation, with the legislation more tailored towards flexibility and simplicity. Companies incorporated in the Isle of Man have to adhere to the Companies Acts and regulations in force which ensures that a good standard of governance is entrenched in the running of companies from the Island. Isle of Man registered companies are the conventional form of business entity for the purposes of conducting local and international business from the Island and enjoy numerous benefits: Separate legal personality 0% corporate tax for Isle of Man resident companies with non-Island beneficial owners or lower tax rate of 10% for defined regulated business No capital gains tax, inheritance tax or stamp duties Ease of incorporating an Isle of Man company (within 2 working days or faster dependant on an additional fee) No requirement to specify a company's objects in the Memorandum of Association, so a company is not restricted in its business activities Third parties take comfort from the similarities to English company law Nominee shareholders may be used to protect the identity of the owners With the correct planning it may be possible for an individual or business to take advantage of these benefits through the utilisation of an Isle of Man corporate structure.

Isle of Man Trusts
Page
As a concept, the 'trust' dates back to England during the Middle Ages, specifically during the Crusades, and developed as a method by which mediaeval knights could plan for, and protect their assets while they were fighting in foreign lands. The trust is an arrangement whereby one party, the Settlor vests the title to property in a second party, the Trustee, for the benefit of a third, the Beneficiary. All three parties must be present for a valid trust, though there is nothing to prevent one person or entity being any two of the parties. The same person cannot act in all three positions.
Benefits of Creating an Isle of Man Trust The benefits and practical uses of a trust are varied, depending of course on the particular scenario but they are often used advantageously in the following circumstances: To enable the Settlor to plan for future generations of his or her family; To ensure that the wishes of the Settlor are honoured after his or her death; For advantageous tax planning purposes, often structured with Isle of Man companies; To enable assets to pass outside of the Settlor’s estate and thus avoid the probate procedure; To protect the Settlor’s estate and assets, perhaps from spendthrift or irresponsible family members; To provide funds for educational purposes; To benefit charitable causes; To make provision for a vulnerable or incapable family member; and In specific cases, to avoid forced heirship rules. With the correct planning it may be possible for an individual, family or business to take advantage of these benefits through the utilisation of an Isle of Man trust or in conjunction with a corporate structure.

Online gaming was previously regulated under the Online Gambling Regulation Act 2001 whilst online betting was regulated by the Gaming, Betting and Lotteries Act 1988, it was resolved that all online gambling and online betting should fall under one legislative regime.
