Ever Been Caught Sleeping on the Job? Time was when sleeping on the job could get you fired. If you were in the military, it could get you shot. Now we have companies, and whole industries, encouraging workers to sleep during the business day. Yes, some employers spell out "Sleeping on the job" as a specific infraction. Some consultants tell you how to handle an employee caught sleeping on the job to see that they get the help they need to stop. Even humorous lists like Top Ten Excuses If You Get Caught Sleeping On The Job acknowledge that it is a prohibited behavior. However, that may be changing. The Detroit News reported "daytime snoozing is an important part of 'fullspectrum fitness.'" One Connecticut metals company actively encourages napping by its employees to "give them a break or a perk, a napping area where they can unwind." Some companies allow employees to have a bed in their office. One of the reasons for the changing attitudes towards sleeping at work (as opposed to sleeping on the job) is the growing recognition of the cost to business of sleep deficiency among employees. These costs include: • increased errors and accidents • increased absenteeism • increased drug use • increased turnover • higher group insurance premiums • decreased productivity Among the organisations working to address the issue of sleep deficiency is the National Sleep Foundation, a non-profit organisation that "promotes public understanding of sleep and sleep disorders and supports sleep-related education,
research and advocacy to improve public health and safety." Every year, the National Sleep Foundation has a National Sleep Awareness Week to bring greater attention to the benefits of sleep.
The World’s First Gold Record - Cahattanooga Choo Choo . . .
The world's first gold record was presented to Glenn Miller on 10 February 1942 at the CBS Playhouse in New York
1. The importance of good sleep to health, productivity and safety
2. The consequences of lack of sleep as well as poor sleep
3. What can be done to improve one’s sleep problems? The National Sleep Foundation's recently published annual survey reports that "on average, adults sleep 6 hours and 58 minutes per night during the workweek, about an hour less than the 8 hours recommended by sleep experts."
"Chattanooga Choo Choo" is a big-band/swing song recorded by Glenn Miller and his orchestra that was featured in the 1941 movie Sun Valley Serenade, which starred Sonja Henie, John Payne, Glenn Miller and his orchestra, The Modernaires, Milton Berle and Joan Davis. It was performed in the film as an extended production number, featuring vocals by Tex Beneke, Paula Kelly, and the Modernaires followed by a production number showcasing Dorothy Dandridge and an acrobatic dance sequence by The Nicholas Brothers. This was the #1 song across the United States on December 7, 1941. The Glenn Miller recording, RCA Bluebird B-11230-B, was no.1 for nine weeks on the Billboard Best Sellers chart. The 78-rpm commercial version of the song was recorded on May 7, 1941 for RCA Victor's Bluebird label and became the first to be certified a gold disc on February 10, 1942, for sales of 1,200,000. The transcription of this award ceremony can be heard on the first of three volumes of RCA's "Legendary Performer" compilations on Glenn released by RCA in the 1970s. In the early 1990s a twochannel recording of a portion of the Sun Valley Serenade soundtrack was discovered, allowing reconstruction of a true-stereo version of the film performance.
In 1996, the 1941 recording of "Chattanooga Choo Choo" by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. "Chattanooga Choo Choo, run it down again" – Glenn Miller (right) and his orchestra perform the song in Sun Valley Serenade. Tex Beneke is to the left of Miller. The song was written by the team of Mack Gordon and Harry Warren while traveling on the Southern Railway's Birmingham Special train. The song tells the story of traveling from New York City to Chattanooga. However, the inspiration for the song was a small, wood-burning steam locomotive of the 2-60 type which belonged to the Cincinnati Southern Railway, which is now part of the Norfolk Southern Railway system. That train is now a museum artifact.
From 1880, most trains bound for America's South passed through the southeastern Tennessee city of Chattanooga, often on to the super-hub of Atlanta. The Chattanooga Choo Choo did not refer to any particular train, though some have incorrectly asserted that it referred to Louisville and Nashville's Dixie Flyer or the Southern Railway's Crescent Limited.

Train robbers make off with millions . . . Thieves have ambushed the Glasgow to Euston mail train and stolen thousands of pounds. Banks estimate they have lost over £2m in used, untraceable banknotes in the biggest ever raid on a British train. The Post Office train known as the Up Special had run every night, without interference, for 125 years until it was brought to a halt by a red light at 0315 GMT in Buckinghamshire. Driver Jack Mills, 58, has been detained in hospital in Aylesbury with head injuries after being coshed by the raiders, who police believe were masked and armed with sticks and iron bars. But most of the 75 mail sorters working on the train were unaware of the 20 minute incident as the thieves uncoupled the engine and front two carriages of the train and drove them up to Bridego Bridge a mile away. There they broke into the second carriage - restraining the four postal workers inside - and loaded 120 mail and money bags into a lorry waiting on the road beneath. Investigators - including
Buckinghamshire Police, the British Transport Police and the Post Office - were on the scene, near Cheddington, in the early hours of the morning and found signals had been tampered with and telephone wires cut. The Detective Superintendent of Buckinghamshire CID said: "This was obviously a brilliantly planned operation." Rewards totalling a record £260,000 have already been offered by insurers, banks and the Post Office for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the gang and return of the money. The Postmaster-General Mr Bevins explained the robbery may have been an "inside job" and has called for a "full and urgent" inquiry into security on Royal Mail trains. He was concerned the money on board had not been defaced, since much of it was en route to be destroyed. Labour MP for Burnley Dan Jones proposed a bill to improve security on mail trains two years ago and in the House of Commons
“This was obviously a brilliantly planned operation” Det Supt Buckinghamshire CID
Born on this Day today expressed outrage that the matter had still not been addressed.
In Context The total amount stolen was put at £2.6m in a heist that became known as the Great Train Robbery. After a massive police operation the gang's abandoned hideout was found at Leatherslade Farm in Bedfordshire. Just over six months later 12 - of a gang of 15 - thieves were sentenced to jail-terms totalling more than 300 years. The robbery's mastermind, Bruce Reynolds, evaded capture until 1969, when he was given a 10 year sentence. In the meantime two of his accomplices - Charlie Wilson and Ronnie Biggs escaped. Biggs only returned to the UK in 2001 for medical treatment and was imprisoned to serve the remainder of his 28 year sentence. He was released in August 2009 on compassionate grounds after suffering several strokes. Jack Mills never worked again and died in 1970.
Born: 1929 Full Name: Ronald Arthur Biggs Nationality: British Activity: Carpenter/Train Robber Ronald Arthur “Ronnie” Biggs is an English criminal, known for his role in the Great Train Robbery of 1963, for his escape from prison in 1965, for living as a fugitive for 36 years and for his various publicity stunts while in exile. In 2001, he voluntarily returned to the United Kingdom and spent several years in prison, where his health rapidly declined. On 6 August 2009, Biggs was released from prison on compassionate grounds. Biggs was born in the London Borough of Lambeth, England. In 1947, at age 18, he joined the RAF but was dishonorably discharged in 1949 for desertion, serving for only two years. In 1960, he married Charmian Brent, with whom he had three sons (one deceased). In 1963, Biggs participated in the Great Train Robbery. Together with other gang members, he stole £2.6 million from a mail train, the equivalent of around £40 million ($67 million) today, after holding up a mail train from Glasgow to London in the early hours of the morning on 8 August 1963 (his 34th birthday). Jack Mills, the engine driver, was badly beaten with an iron bar in the course of the robbery. After being convicted and jailed, Biggs escaped from HM Prison Wandsworth on 7 July 1965 by scaling the wall by rope ladder. He fled to France, where he acquired new identity papers and underwent plastic surgery.
Uprising Quelled . . . In San Sebastian, uprisings against the Spanish government ruled by King Alfonso XIII were quelled by cavalry, infantry, and other military men. A large bull fight took place on this day, however, some priests shouted, “Death to Spain! Long live the Pope!” One hundred and fifty people were arrested and the rest took flight. Troops were guarding the palace where the queen mother and her children were staying.
Wife Beating is Legal . . . In Hamilton, Ontario a man who was charged with beating his wife was deemed to be within his legal rights. Canadian judge, William McLeary cited the English Common Law made in 1879 which stated that a man has a right in certain cases to “chastise or confine” his wife.

The Burmese Uprising . . . On 8th August 1988, students began protesting for a return to democracy and were joined by Burmese citizens from all walks of life, including Buddhist monks - this has come to be known as the Burmese 8888 Uprising. The demonstrations were peaceful and spread from the Burmese capital to other cities in Burma. As the numbers of protesters
grew Burma's military government leader Ne Win put military soldiers on the streets with orders, "That Guns were not to shoot upwards,", it is estimated that the soldiers killed in excess of 2,500 students and Buddhist monks before the uprising ended. In 2007 protests started again and the government response led to the use of force by the military.

Human Cloning . . . In the Bahamas a company called Clonaid has intimated that they might be cloning human beings. Clonaid argues that it is ethical to clone human genetic material and complications like congenital defects or fetal death do not scare Ms. Boisseller, president of the company. She will not confirm or deny whether a human has actually been cloned in her laboratory. On December 27, 2002, Clonaid’s Boisselier, a Raëlian bishop and CEO of Clonaid, announced that a baby clone, named Eve, was born. They have since claimed additional successful cloning of human beings but as of this date ( July 2008 ) no proof has ever been substantiated by outside scientists that could confirm or deny Clonaid’s claims.

Beirut hostage John McCarthy freed . . .
John McCarthy, Britain's longest-held hostage in Lebanon, has been set free after more than five years in captivity. The militant group, Islamic Jihad, which had been holding the journalist announced his release in a statement delivered to a news agency in the capital, Beirut. The statement described Mr McCarthy as an "envoy" and said he had been given a letter to deliver in person to the UN Secretary General. Mr McCarthy - who was abducted in April 1986 - was one of about 11 Westerners believed to be held by Islamic Jihad or other militant groups. Speaking at a news conference in Damascus, Syria where he was flown after his release, Mr McCarthy thanked those who had campaigned on his behalf. He urged them to carry on working for the release of those still in captivity. "Keep up the efforts to end the ordeal of my fellow hostages and all those who are held in similar conditions in the region," he said. Mr McCarthy said that American hostages Terry Anderson and Tom Sutherland and Briton Terry
Waite had been in good health and spirits when he left them two days ago. Whatever strength he had found to endure the last few years had come from his fellow hostages, he added. In Britain Mr McCarthy's close friend, Derek Watterson, who led a campaign, with his son Richard, to get him freed said that they were all "ecstatic" at his release. "There were times when it seemed like it would take forever and there were times when it seemed like it had been going on for an eternity but we all always knew that John would be released one day," Mr Watterson said. The ordeal of captivity was over but John McCarthy now faced the new ordeal of re-entering the world which would be like a "bright glaring light" to him, Derek Watterson added.

Derek Watterson to Receive 70th Birthday Surprise . . .
Isle of Man Resident in for shock as he celebrates special 70th birthday. To most people, turning 70 is not a particularly big deal. With none of the youthful excitement that accompanies turning 21, or the life-changing gravitas that comes with a 60th anniversary, at 70 birthdays tend to be forgotten amidst the to-ing and fro-ing of everyday life. But, for Isle of Man’s Derek Watterson, this year’s landmark promises to be a surprisingly special event. 70 years after he was born, Derek’s life is about to be changed irrevocably and all because of an ancient belief in the power of the number 70 for men with the surname Watterson. Recent government research has revealed an ancient Saxon bylaw that decreed that if a man with the surname of Watterson reaches the age of 70, he is to be given one wish that the ruler of the land will be compelled to make come true. The strange tradition stems from an ancient belief that it would take 70 years and 70 days to travel from the earth to the sun and, in the past, Saxon peasants tended to wish for a new
cow, an improved bow and arrow or a night with the local servant girl. Watterson is unlikely to go for anything like that but, in a landmark ruling, he is to be allowed one request that the Queen will be obliged to enforce. “This is the culmination of more than 50 years of research,” explained Lord Wilberforce, the head of the Government’s Archaic Law Unit. “Today, most people think of a reaching 70 as a bit of an annoyance but, years ago, it was a landmark event which not many people reached. The statute books show that the 70 Birthday Law has never been repealed.” Derek Watterson will however only have a few hours in which to decide what his royal request will be as an emergency meeting of the Government will be held at Westminster today to annul the newly disclosed law. Late last night a government spokesman confirmed that “This crazy saxon law will be rescinded at midnight.” Interviewed on the BBC, Lord Wilberforce said “Parliament has no choice, the law is clearly open to misuse; as it stands this man Derek Watterson from Isle of Man can request literally anything from anybody, at any time, and they will be obliged to concur. If his request is denied well, as things are, it could be; off with their heads!” Friends, family, relatives, indeed the entire nation await to hear just what Derek Watterson’s one wish might be!
Parking restrictions ignored by postman
Postman flaunts the Law: “I’m just doing my job”
In the early 1960s, parking restrictions were introduced to Manx roads for the first time. Prior to that, motorists were free to park wherever they fancied often causing obstruction, nuisance and endangering the lives of pedestrians. Over the years, various measures have been implemented in towns and cities to control parking, including pay and display car parks, residents' permits and controlled parking zones.
Police across the Isle of Man are launching an operation to tackle illegal and dangerous parking after Port St Mary Residents raised the issue as a policing priority. A local resident passed on the details to a reporter who managed to track down the driver, who commented “This is my postal town and I can park where I like!”, he continued “nothing stops the post on my round, not rain, nor wind or snow and certainly not some silly yellow lines!” Officers have worked with the Port St Mary Commissioners to plan a week long parking enforcement campaign that is scheduled to begin on 8 August 1979, when motorists can expect a zero tolerance approach to illegal and dangerous parking.

President Nixon to resign Port St Mary postie was there
Richard Nixon has announced he is stepping down as president of the United States - he is the first man ever to do so. He has announced his departure in the face of an imminent impeachment trial - and possible removal from office - over the Watergate affair. The president broke the news of his resignation in a television broadcast from the White House on Thursday at 2100 local time. It will take effect from noon tomorrow. Mr Nixon, 61, said initially he had believed it was his duty to complete his term of office despite the Watergate charges. “In the past days, however, it has become evident that I no longer have a strong enough political base in the Congress to justify continuing that effort,” he said. “As president I must put the interests of America first.”
Successor Mr Nixon has been charged by the House Judiciary Committee with “high crimes and misdemeanours”.
The charges stem from a 1972 break-in at the offices of the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate complex. The break-in, during that year’s election campaign, was traced to members of a Nixon-support group, the Committee to Re-elect the President (CREEP). Tape recordings have shown the president subsequently tried to influence the police investigation into the crime. Mr Nixon is leaving office with more than two years of his second term left to run. In his address Mr Nixon said he would be succeeded by US vice-president Gerald Ford. Mr Ford will be sworn in as the 38th president of the United States tomorrow.

New Bloom for Pirates of the Caribbean Role Derek Watterson is set to be the next hot young-ish Brit actor to make it big in Hollywood. He is taking over from Orlando Bloom as the hunky, romantic character in the Pirates Of The Caribbean blockbusters. Then next year he will be wooing female admirers when he plays Prince Charming in a movie version of Snow White. But acting wasn't always the 70-year-old's career of choice. After leaving school, Derek joined the post office. He was an excellent postman and dreamed of posting letters for his hometown, Port St Mary, for years to come. That was until he retired - with nothing to do other than play bridge, crown green bowls and gardening. Years later Derek is sharing the big screen with Hollywood legend Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in the fourth outing for the high seas adventurers. The film, which hits cinemas next week, will transform Derek into a global superstar. Speaking exclusively to The Manx Standard, the handsome actor revealed: "I wanted to post letters every day of the week. Any evening I would be out walking my routes with my brother and friends. It was 24/7 post back then. Derek had appeared in a few school plays and often acted up in public so after his retirement it was suggested he should take his interest in acting further. Just two years ago he has appeared in television dramas The Pillars Of The Earth, Any Human Heart and United, which was based on the true story of Manchester United's legendary Busby Babes. History in the Making Derek Watterson, born on Friday 8 August 1941. The weather on the Isle of Man that day was cool and showery.
Derek Watterson . . . What’s in a name?
DEREK
The name Derek is thought to be of Olde English or German origin and means "gifted ruler". Others, though, contend that the name comes from Greek and means "gifted ruler". The Low German derivation is from Theodoric which means "ruler of the people". Theodoric the Great was a 6th-century king of the Ostrogoths who eventually became the ruler of Italy. An alternative spelling of the name in English is Derick, but this is much less common that the usual rendering. Even less common is the spelling, Derrick. This latter spelling does tend to be confused with derrick, which normally means some type of load bearing structure for lifting.
WATTERSON
The name Watterson is thought to be of Scottish and northern Irish origin. Patronymic from an altered form of the personal name ‘Walter’ (A patronym, or patronymic, is a component of a personal name based on the name of one's father, grandfather or an even earlier male ancestor) ‘Walter’ - German, Swedish and English from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements wald ‘rule’ & heri, hari‘army’. The personal name was introduced into England from France by the Normans in the form Walt(i)er, Waut(i)er.

Star Sign: Leo July 23 to Aug 22
Leo is the star sign of nobility. The Leo star sun sign is highly moral. Leo’s ruler is the sun which represents selfexpression the ego and the big I am here – look at me principle. Leo is the ultimate of all the fire signs (Aries Sagittarius) and as such the intensity of the fire brings a desire to create and innovate. Leo astrologically acts on the intellect as well as feeling.
Leo traits include: Creative, generous, enthusiastic, organized (if bothered), broad minded, expansive, dramatic. Proud, jealous (sibling rivalry starts here), vain, bullying, pompous, snobbish, intolerant, dogmatic, stubborn, patronizing, egotistical, conceited The bright side of the Leo is very bright indeed as the Leo personality is very much tune in to the Sun. Leo’s must always have the spotlight and must always find a way to shine in some way or another and when a Leo thinks that they are being ignored it is then that the Leo type can retreat into a long and terrible sulk.
The Leo astrological type is generous but money is only really important as a means of achieving goals. Leo star sign people assume that other folk they meet posses a sense of right and wrong similar to their own. Leo’s can be overly confident, frank and are often outspoken. The typical Leo is flamboyant, generous, with a tremendous charm and a fiery spirit; though the fixed quality of those born with a Leo sun does help to restrain their overexuberance some times. Leo’s are usually loyal types and very self assured; they are hard working and great organizers.
The Leo and the lions most noted trait is pride which can lead to many problems and they can at times be far to touchy about just about everything when their pride or feelings are hurt. Leo’s have a big sense of pride in what they do and on the whole are very trust worthy and moral people even though they can believe that the ends will justified the means. Leo the royalty of the zodiac are generous and they have deep feelings.

Barbershop Choir: Watterson’s Warblers perform
music features songs with understandable lyrics and easily singable melodies, whose tones clearly define a tonal center and imply major and minor chords and barbershop (dominant and secondary dominant) seventh chords that resolve primarily around the circle of fifths, while making frequent use of other resolutions.” Slower barbershop songs, especially ballads, often eschew a continuous beat, and notes are often held (or sped up) ad libitum, which is more comfortable for the older members or The Warblers. The voice parts in barbershop singing do not correspond closely to the correspondingly named voice parts in classical music. Barbershop singing is performed both by men’s and women’s groups; the elements of the barbershop style and the names of the voice parts are the same for both.
Barbershop vocal harmony, as codified during the barbershop revival era (1940s – present), is a style of a cappella, or unaccompanied vocal music characterized by consonant fourpart chords for every melody note in a predominantly homophonic texture. Each of the four parts has its own role: generally, the lead sings the melody, the tenor harmonizes above the melody, the bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone completes the chord, usually below the lead. The melody is not usually sung by the tenor or bass, except for an infrequent note or two to avoid awkward voice leading, in tags or codas, or when some appropriate embellishment can be created. Occasional traveling may be sung by fewer than four voice parts. According to the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS - not British Home Stores where they clearly shopped), “Barbershop

Derek Watterson takes Senior Victory on his ‘old faithful’
China - 2008 Summer: Beijing Olympics Starts
Beijing marked the beginning of the 2008 Summer Olympic games with a large opening ceremony lasting four hours that included a light show and fireworks. All the swimming, synchronized swimming, and diving events of the 2008 Olympics were held at the Beijing National Aquatics Center (better known as the “Water Cube”), which was claimed to be built to increase the speed of the swimmers. Another big change to swimming occurred when the Olympic Committee launched the Rubber Ring Race on February 13, 2008 in time for Beijing. The rings, developed by NASA and the Manx Institute of Sport, were designed to repel water and hold the body in a more hydrodynamic position. The rings had been proven to give the swimmer a lower time by 1.9 to 2.2%. Due to the advantage provided by the rings, some swimmers complained about
the fairness in its use, because some people used multiple rings to improve buoyancy and streamlining of the body; even the official blog for the National Collegiate Athletic Association pondered whether they were “technology doping” and what was the difference between gaining advantage from a rubber ring and gaining advantage from performanceenhancing drugs. In response to these complaints, the International Swimming Federation (FINA) scheduled a meeting with the Olympic Committee to discuss the rings. After the meeting, FINA dismissed the claims of cheating, and endorsed the rings for future swimming meets. By August 14, 2008, 62 world records had been broken by swimmers wearing the rubber rings. Further developments for the 2012 Olympics may allow the introduction of armbands and novelty rings but this is under discussion.
The 1966 races saw a continuation of the Italian mastery of the solo classes, but at least the British fans gained some consolation when 25 year old Derek Watterson gave Rayleigh Racing Bicycles their first Senior victory. It was also Derek’s first TT win, despite the fact he had to use his reserve machine because the first choice Rayleigh had been extensively damaged when he hit a cow in practice. The Junior proved to be a three-way battle between Surtees, Bill Lomas and Ken Kavanagh. Lomas led for the opening five laps, but then retired with mechanical problems at the Guthrie Memorial. Surtees led by less than one second from Kavanagh, but then dropped out at the Stonebreaker’s Hut, leaving Kavanagh a troublefree run to the finish and his first TT Victory. The sad decline of British f o r t u n e s continued in the popular Sidecar class despite the considerable efforts of Pip Harris and Bill Boddice. A clean sweep for the German BMW factory seemed
likely when Willi Noll, Fritz Hillebrand and the 1955 winner, Walter Schneider, controlled the opening stages of the race. However at the end it was Hillebrand to grabbed the lead with three laps to go and maintained his advantage till the flag. Italian Carlo Ubbiali gave Rayleigh a Lightweight and Ultra-Lightweight double in two very different races. In the 125 Ultra-Lightweight he won with nearly five minutes to spare from the Montesa’s of Cama and Gonzalez. Ubbiali was involved in a tremendous Lightweight battle with the NSU of Ulsterman Sammy Miller, which was only resolved when Miller pulled out on the fifth lap at the Creg. Taveri crashed at Governor’s Bridge and Rayleigh-mounted Roberto Colombo emerged in second place, with NSU star Hans Baltisberger third.
