Solar is on the rise! The Reimagine design team is proud to have a long history of pioneering the early application of Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV), or solar panels that are integrated into a building’s design.

Solar Energy has enabled us to achieve many sustainable “firsts,” including the the first LEED Gold building in the Arctic, and the first netzero commercial building in Alberta.

When solar panels perform double duty, it makes them less expensive, and often, more energy-efficient than solar farms installed on the ground!
SOLAR MODULES INTEGRATED INTO GLAZING
The Greenstone Government of Canada Building was the very first LEED Gold project in the Arctic, delivering sustainability and beauty in a very challenging climate. Home to 200 federal employees in Yellowknife, NWT, it consolidated 15 departments that were previously scattered across the city. The Greenstone saw one of our team’s earliest BIPV designs; a sun-filled atrium, whose glazing is partially made up of PV panels which collect solar energy, and also provide the shade for the atrium in the summer. This innovation was a groundbreaking: the system was the largest of its kind in Canada (and second largest in the world) at the time!

The Greenstone BIPV system performed even better than anticipated. As it happens, cold weather actually improves the performance of solar panels. This sealed the deal for our design team, proving that our northern climate was clearly suited for BIPV technology.
SOLAR PANELS DOUBLE AS SUNSHADES
Reimagine believes in walking the talk, and accordingly, we have implemented a BIPV system at our Edmonton studio. The 1950s building that we have reimagined as our studio has a minimal mechanical system. During warmer summer months, we rely on operable windows, not mechanical air conditioning, to keep us

cool while we work inside. Yet the south side of the building can get toasty, so adding sunshades to the façade made sense. We decided to collect the sun on our building’s south side using photovoltaic panels as our sunshades, instead of wasting it. This elegant design solution solves multiple problems in one stroke, generating green energy while keeping the building cool. The panels produce 10.4
kilowatts, or 10 per cent of the building’s energy needs. During weekends or other low-usage periods, the energy flows into the grid.

SOLAR PANELS INTEGRATED INTO CLADDING
The Mosaic Centre for Conscious Community is more than an office building. Solar panels were a crucial element in meeting the building’s ambitious targets of achieving LEED Platinum, certification, as well as being the first commercial building in Alberta to reach net-zero status. For Mosaic, all solar panels are mounted on the structure; 83 of them in the cladding of the building and 560 on top of the roof. Reimagine worked with the owner to arrange financing for the implementation of the system, one of the first “solar lease” arrangements in Alberta. Following the success of integrating solar panels into cladding at Mosaic, this strategy was also used on another groundbreaking project: the Red Deer

Polytechnic Student Residence. This project features a 153-kW photovoltaic array integrated into the exterior facade, covering the east, west, and south faces of the building. This innovation helpd to garner the Mosaic Centre a Clean 50 award in 2022! Red Deer Polytechnic boasts a new Alternative Energy Lab, and as the campus maps out a sustainable future, its new showpiece Residence reinforces this progressive narrative. The Residence's 163-kW array offsets approximate 40% of the building's energy consumption, and is tracked on screens inside the building so that visitors and residents can see the impact of the technology.
