Welcome to the City of Manassas Park Department of Parks and Recreation. The Department of Parks and Recreation is committed to the provision of quality leisure services for the residents of Manassas Park. Over the years, through the many changes the City has endured, the Department of Parks and Recreation has responded to the growing needs of the community by continuing to support the Governing Body’s vision to be the “Premier Northern Virginia Community to live, work, and raise a family”. POLICIES Registration Registration is on a “first come, first serve basis.” You will only be notified if the class/program is cancelled. Late registrations may be accepted if space is available with no reduction in fee. However, we encourage registering online at www.ManassasParkCommunityCenter.com. Forms & Fees Each class/program must be accompanied by payment. You may register and pay for classes two ways; either online via our website at www.manassasparkcommunitycenter.com or in person at the Community Center located at 99 Adams Street, Manassas Park, VA 20111. Checks are to be made payable to “City of Manassas Park.” There is a $50 returned check fee for any check returned by the bank. Cancellations The Department of Parks & Recreation reserves the right to cancel any class/ program which does not meet the minimum enrollment. All programs with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled 5 days prior to the program start date. PLEASE REGISTER EARLY! Non-City Residents Most of the fee based classes/programs are available to non-city residents at an additional fee. Please see the individual class/program for additional information. Inclement Weather In the event of inclement weather the Department of Parks and Recreation will follow the Local Government cancellation schedule. If classes/programs are cancelled, every attempt will be made to re-schedule the class/program. Participation The City of Manassas Park, Department of Parks & Recreation, classes/programs/ events/facilities are open to all individuals regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability. We need your help in “Shaping the Future.” The Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking citizens of all backgrounds and interests to help guide our services. Member representation is on a volunteer basis, so if you are interested, we would love to hear from you! Health and Wellness Committee Help us work to combat childhood obesity, promote healthy living, and encourage active aging on a citywide scale. Charged with raising awareness and addressing health and wellness issues, we are seeking dynamic citizens to help us achieve these goals. Skate Park Committee We are building a Skate Park! We need help with design and fundraising! If you are between the ages of 12 and 18 years old and want to get involved, give us a call. If you are over 18 years old, we need your help too – so get in touch with us today! Special Events Committee This committee assists staff in the planning, marketing, fundraising, coordination, and implementation of 29 special events hosted by the Department of Parks and Recreation. Membership Committee Committed to customer service excellence, this committee is focused on Community Center membership specials, promotions, hospitalities, member retention, and appreciation through opportunities, events and programs. Your participation on this committee will assist us in keeping customer satisfaction our number one priority.

Baker Street Park

Features a playground, a covered pavilion and an acre of open space. *Currently closed until further notice, staging area for construction.

Scott Drive Park

Features a playground, a small covered pavilion and open space.

Polk Street Park

Features an outdoor basketball court, a playground, and generous amounts of open space.

These small parks, ranging in size from a quarter acre to one acre, are located in the residential neighborhood of the eastern area of the City and primarily service the residents local to each site. Block Parks are open year round from 7:30 a.m. until dusk. All Parks and facilities are open to the public and may be scheduled for specific use through the Parks and Recreation Department at 703.335.8872. Please note, the rental application is a request only, not a guarantee. A Facility Use Application is required for all facility reservations. Special Permits, in addition to the Field Use Application may be required for after hours events, special events, or group use. Payment, if required, must accompany a Facility Use Application. The Department does not accept tentative reservations. Cancellations must be made at least 14 days in advance for shelters and at least 48 hours in advance for other facility reservations in order to receive a refund. Applications are available at the Costello Park Business Office. All rentals are subject to availability and must be booked and paid for 7 days in advance of event. Certain restrictions may apply. Rates are on a ‘per hour’ basis, unless otherwise noted. Deposits are a one time refundable fee, restrictions may apply.

LOCATION

Costello Park

Information The Manassas Park Dog Park features a large and small dog run for your pets to exercise and interact in a safe environment with other dogs. • Hours: Sunrise to Sunset. • Dogs must be current on all vaccinations. • Dogs must be leashed when entering and exiting the Dog Park. • For the safety of your dog(s) and other park visitors, choke, prong (pinch) and spike collars are strictly prohibited. If you use these types of collars, remove them before entering the park. • No Children under the age of 16 are permitted unless accompanied by an adult. Children have a tendency to scream and run when excited, which can trigger a dog’s prey drive or natural instinct to chase. For this reason and for the safety of your children, we do not recommend bringing small children and infants into the dog park. • Aggressive dogs are not permitted on the premises. Dogs must be removed at the first sign of aggression. • Female dogs in heat are prohibited from entering the park. • Dog owners must be in the park and within view of their dogs at all times. • All off-leash dogs must be under voice control of their owners. If you can not control your dog off leash, keep your pet leashed at all times. • Dog owners must keep their leash in hand at all times. • Please do not bring dog food into the park. • Owner must clean up dog feces. Seal waste in the provided plastic bags before disposing in designated receptacles. • Fill any holes your dog digs. • Proof of a current rabies vaccination and license is required upon request of a police or animal control officer. Tags may serve as proof. • Failure to abide by the park rules may result in loss of privileges or owners may be ticketed. • Use of Dog Park is at owners and pets risk. *Park occasionally closed during normal hours for maintenance.

HISTORICAL SITES: LOCATION

The Conner House Signal Hill Monument

BrieF Description

A nationally registered historical site, this antebellum stone house, circa 1855, is located in the central region of the City, in view of city hall. The Conner House is currently being restored and is not open to the general public. A nationally registered historical landmark, 13-acre monument site is located in the western end of the City, adjacent to Signal Hill Park. Signal Hill is open year round from 7:30 a.m. until dusk.

Camp Carondolet

A nationally registered historical landmark, this 8-acre Civil War encampment is located in the Blooms Crossing subdivision adjacent to Cougar Elementary School. A series of nature trails are available to public year round from 7:30 a.m. until dusk.

The Georgia Cemetery

Included in the Camp Carondelet nomination, is a Civil War cemetery located in the direct vicinity of Camp Carondelet in the Blooms Crossing subdivision. The Georgia Cemetery is available to the general public by permit only.

The Union Mill Trestle

A key structure in the Civil War, is located in the last few remaining acres of the once Union Mill Park near the VRE lot and Generals Ridge Golf Course. This site is not accessible to the public.

Field Application: Athletic fields and park grounds are available for rental to registered leagues and group users. Cost for permits vary on the type of usage and the duration of the request. All Spring field usage requests are accepted beginning February 1st of each calendar year for a March 15th through July 1st season. All Fall field usage requests are accepted beginning July 1st of each calendar year for an August 1st – November 15th season. Note: All fields will be assigned by March 15th. Permits will be issued at time of application approval.

ZUMBA® is a program that fuses Latin and International music and dance themes that create a dynamic, exciting, effective fitness system! The routines feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that help to tone and sculpt the body. It provides a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps.

Buddy Yoga

This class will focus on the foundations of yoga while providing plenty of modifications for our physically challenged or intellectually disabled adults. *Included in Buddy Club Membership. Drop in rates apply for non-members.

Restorative Aqua

Gentle movements will help increase flexibility, range of motion, and strength.

If you enjoy ZUMBA®, you will be sure to enjoy Zumba in the water. Zumba utilizes the principles of fitness interval training/resistance training to maximize caloric output, fat burning, and total body toning. It provides a mixture of body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps. You do not need to be a swimmer to take this class.

We offer experienced and qualified Personal Trainers to meet all of your fitness needs and maximize your fitness potential. This class will give a cardio and strength workout at a pace that is moderate. Class is meant to help create healthy individuals. Held in water that is at least 4 ft. deep. You do not need to be a swimmer to take this class.

This class is specially designed to help seniors improve their cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. A variety of aerobic and anaerobic exercises utilizing medicine balls, dumb-bells, exercise bands, and stability balls will be incorporated into this functional, exciting, and low impact class.

Included in all memberships. Meet privately with one of our certified personal trainers and receive a thorough fitness assessment!

This class is designed for those desiring to increase cardiovascular fitness and increase muscular strength more efficiently. Boot Camp is for the beginner to the advanced enthusiast. Workout in a TEAM environment while challenging yourselves with others to reach your personal fitness goals.

Water Walking

Like any water aerobic exercise, water walking is easy on the joints. The water’s buoyancy supports the body’s weight, which reduces stress on the joints and minimizes pain. Water provides 12 times the resistance of air, so as you walk, you’re really strengthening and building muscle.

Beginner Yoga

This class will cover the fundamentals of yoga poses and breathing techniques. This class will focus on strength and flexibility as well as breathe awareness and relaxation.

Senior Yoga

Fitness Assessment

Teen Weight Training

Included in Teen Passport. Instructs teens on how to properly use the strength and cardiovascular equipment within the fitness center.

Sport Specific Speed & Performance Training

This class is designed for individuals, small groups, or teams who are interested in increasing their overall performance on the athletic field through the use of speed and strength training drills and concepts. Get a leg up on the competition by enhancing your overall performance level in the off-season. Cost: $330/person, $825/small group (2-4), $1,200/team (5+) Duration: Six one hour sessions (one session per week)

The Manassas Park Community Center natatorium is an NCAA short course certified indoor pool consisting of eight, 25 yard lanes, a zero depth entry and a spa. The pool temperature is maintained at a comfortable 82˚F. Kick boards, pull buoys and life jackets for patrons are available for use while at the facility. Certain areas of the pool may not be open for public swimming due to swim lessons, group exercise classes or league rentals.

GENERAL Fall Extended Care Fall Extended Care is a licensed program through the State of Virginia, Department of Social Services under the direction of our Parks and Recreation Staff. Home School Physical Education Homeschooled children need to exercise too and this class will give them just that-access to state of the art physical education facilities and equipment, here at the Community Center. Classes are held during the day, once a week and will feature everything a school-based gym class would: from basic exercises to fun physically active games and sports. Are you a Teen looking for something to do? Look no more, Welcome to the Teen Passport for teens 6th grade – 12th grade (ages 12-17). You have access to all teen programs and the facility. You can also earn points towards your membership! Passport memberships are $20/month and include classes and programs just for Teens. Each month you are allowed up to 20 points. When you earn 20 points, your next month is FREE! Earn points for good grades, community service and volunteering. Individuals who are above 17 years old and/or currently enrolled in high school with a valid high school ID are eligible for the Teen Passport. MP3 (Manassas 3 O’clock Club) is a non-licensed program operated by the City of Manassas Park, Department of Parks and recreation, that is lightly supervised for your teen to have a safe fun place to be after school. The curriculum emphasizes recreation with creative programs and materials that encourage and invite participation. Recreation leaders guide students in activities that allow the participants to learn; choosing independent activities or participation in group activities that are fun, safe, and challenging. Ages 13-15. Manassas Park, Dept. of Parks and Rec. is proud to bring another thrilling season of basketball back to the community. Our league is co-ed and we focus on the FUN-damentals and skill development. Team sizes are small so everyone plays and the experience for the kids is priceless. Teams practice once a week and play games mostly on Saturdays. Coaches are volunteers, and receive the lowest rate for their children. Placement of child is determined by age on January 1, 2014. Shooting Fall Foliage on Skyline Drive Join us for an all day adventure down Skyline Drive to learn hoe to take the best photos possible of the stunning fall foliage in Shenandoah National Park. During our trip we will discuss macro photography, landscape photography, and twilight photography. Manassas Park Senior Passport

All classes are included FREE of charge for senior passport members. Our Seniors Passport Program is only $30 per year. To be eligible for this Passport Membership, you must be 65 years of age. Membership includes all the benefits the Fitness+ PLUS Membership as well as the splash membership and access to all senior programs at no additional fee! Enjoy our potlucks, the wellness center, pool, active aging programs and more! This winter, we will be hosting a brunch with Santa, a Scavenger Hunt, Regional Trips and an outing to the Riverside Dinner Theatre in Fredericksburg. Non-members may enroll in these classes individually by paying the $2 daily drop-in rate. *Times, dates, and activities are subject to change. Transportation is available for residents of Park Place Senior Apartments on weekdays with pick-up times at 8:45am and 11:45am, and drop-off times at 11:40am and 2pm at no additional cost. Please keep in mind that meals are not currently available at the Manassas Park Community Center, participants coming from 8:45am-2pm will need to provide their own lunch. *Transportation availability, times and locations are subject.

Flexibility and strengthening your core are keys to this class that is specifically for our seniors, the class could be easily adjusted for people that have limited mobility as well.

Join in the fun and volley the ball with your friends a bit to work up a sweat. If you’d like to practice you could also fold up the table and hit to yourself for awhile.

Walking Club

Some things are better with friends. Walking is one of those things. Walking is one of the most effective forms of physical activity that provides you with plenty of health benefits. Walk with other seniors around the Community Center, and Costello Park to achieve set goals, improve your all-around health and of course spend time with friends.

Pickle Ball

It’s contagious! Its fun; and you will get hooked! Pickleball is a sport described as “a combination of tennis, and badminton” and it’s a great way to get exercise. Come play the game that everyone is talking about.

Senior Strength & Sculpt

Our Senior Strength & Sculpt exercise class is geared to seniors of all shapes, sizes, and mobility levels. You’ll be able to get a great work-out that is low impact enough to meet needs and provide a challenging work-out to boot.

Restorative Aquafit

This is another pool exercise class that puts the needs of participants into action by making it low impact exercise that anyone can handle.

Wii Fitness

Remember when action packed video games consisted of frogs crossing the street? Well, we have the newest technology in video gaming, which will allow you to get an excellent workout through virtual gaming and have fun at the same time.

Personalized Circuit Training

This circuit training is individualized to fit your personal goals. It will include warm-ups, exercise for strength, flexibility, balance and cool down.

Country Line Dancing

Why not join us for great music, good company and invigorating exercise? This non-partnered dancing is a surprising workout, and is a wonderful way to meet new friends.

SOCIAL OPPORTUNITIES News Flow

Participate in an active discussion of current events – local, national and international. This is a great opportunity to learn about ‘the rest of the story’. Coffee will be available, to accompany the spirited discussion.

Potluck Picnic in the Park +

On the 2nd Monday of the Month, we’ll be heading outdoors (weather-permitting) for a potluck picnic. The picnic is held at Costello Park, and during the colder months will be moved into the Community Center. Contact the Community Center to sign up to bring a dish for our potluck.

Gardening Gurus

Do you have a green thumb? Then join our gardening group that will be assisting with the upkeep of our landscapes. And during the colder months we are going to be coming indoors for window garden creations and plan for spring beautification goals.

Cards and Games

Bridge, Rummy, Cribbage, Mah-Jongg and Pinochle are just some of the games that will be played on a weekly basis at the Community Center. Every week we provide the games and you provide the fun and energy.

Bingo Night +

The first Thursday of the Month, we’ll be playing bingo! Bring your friends, wear your lucky socks and maybe your numbers will come up B-I-N-G-O!

Senior Socials

One of the longest running programs in Manassas Park! If you are you excited to meet with new and old friends to talk about the day’s events, and have a creative touch, than this social group is perfect for you? We will work on craft projects, play games and have a good time every Wednesday.

Movie of the Month +

From new thrillers to romantic classics, we’ll be showing a movie on the last Wednesday of every month. Don’t forget the popcorn to enjoy with friends. Movie selections include: Lincoln, Life of Pi, Grumpy Old Men, Grease, .

Needlework Circle

Join this informal group to work on knitting, crocheting, or needlework. Brush up on your skills or share your knowledge. Participants must pre-register.

Morning Mochas

Some mornings, you just feel like taking it easy and enjoying some coffee with friends. We understand that and have a space set-up for you to just relax and enjoy your friends company every Friday morning. Plus every once in awhile a City leader will be here to listen to your thoughts.

Carefully developed writing exercises will help you to express yourself more easily and lead you to an enjoyable, significant exploration of your personal narrative. New School Skills * Do you desire to learn how to use a computer, a particular program on a laptop, or just trying to figure out how to send an e-mail? Our expert teacher will show you everything you need to know about the computer to get you up to speed. Topics covered: Microsoft Word, Excel, Email and Internet 101. Participants must pre-register.

Lunch and Learn + An informative, “weekly series” that is free and open to all. Each month a different speaker provides a lively presentation on a topic of interest. Bring your lunch and join the conversation. Coffee will be available. Participants must pre-register.

Crafty Cooking Classes Cooking is all the rage, and you can enjoy cooking classes, even if you’ve prepared meals most of your life. You can learn techniques that help your health and your budget while you’re having fun. In this class you will learn how to make simple, healthy and quick meals with our experienced chef. Take One Drama Troupe Ages 17+. The Take One Drama Troupe is a group of talented individuals with developmental/cognitive disabilities. The Drama Troupe works with ARC of Greater Prince William as well as the Manassas Park Department of Parks and Recreation and Manassas Park Schools to host various plays throughout the year. Practices will be held at the Manassas Park Community Center on Wednesdays from 6-7pm. The Miracle League Baseball program is a specially designed program for people with disabilities to play America’s past time.
