August 2013 Summer is almost over. Here we are in August and I’m sure most of us are certainly looking forward to cooler weather and the anticipated foliage change. However, since we’re still in the midst of summer let’s take a moment to go over some reminders. In the event of extreme heat, the Manassas Park Community Center is available to everyone as a cooling center. You can stop by the center to cool off, whether you are a member or not. It’s important that during times of extreme heat you have access to a safe place that you can cool off and rest. Other important tips to remember include drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages – water is always the best for you, rest, take cool showers or baths, wearing lightweight - loose-fitting clothing; and if outdoors - wear a hat and plan outdoor activities in early morning when it is cooler. This month the Community Center has many great programs and activities for you to choose from. One highlight is that we’ll be hosting a potluck style party to honor a very special day in August. Do you know that August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day? It was determined by President Reagan in 1988. He said that “we should honor our elders for all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute.” From all of us at the Manassas Park Community Center, we would like to wish you a happy Senior Citizens Day. Spend this day however, you would like, and remember to ask local businesses if they have any discounts to honor the day.
