NATALIA OKOLUS ARCHITECTURAL PORTFOLIO////////////////
“ My journey into the world of architecture started just when I began learning architectural drawing. After two year spent at drawing school I’ve started my bachelor degree studies in architecture at Warsaw University of Technology. During studies I was gaining experience in many architectural offices.: SAMI Architekci, +48 and Grupa 5 Architekci. In the same time I was also trying to improve my skills by participating in many competitions. I participated in Erasmus Exchange Program. I ‘ve spent one semester at Via Univeristy College in Horsens, Denmark. It was a great time which I will remember forever. . I learned a lot, met many new people and totally fell in love with Denmark. That’s why I ‘ve decided to come back to start my master degree studies at Aalborg University. I am really keen on architecture. and I am trying to be involved into many different activities like doing architectural visualizations or designing interiors. I am also interested in desing and handcraft. Not having anything to do it’s hard for me, so I am constantly searching for new architectural competitions and challenges.”

MSC 01 PROJECT - HATLEHOL CHURCH IN NORWAY ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
//TYPE: School project //TIME: 10.2014-01.2015 //LOCATION: Alesund, Norway //TEAM: Natalia Okolus, Mateusz Płoszaj-Mazrek, Peter Christensen, Peter Rønnest, Andreas F. Sheye //RESPONSIBILITY: Developing the project from scratch until finish: conceptual drawings, main drawings, analysis, visualizations, animation, posters, models. //ABSTRACT: The project has has been created as an assignment during Tectonic design course: Structure and Construction at Aalborg University. The project has been developed by a group of 5 students. The new Hatlehol Church enhances both the cohesion and individuality of the visitors. By capturing the surrounding nature, a symbiosis is formed between the nature and the architecture. Shaped by fragments of the structure, spaces for reflection, joy, meditation and sorrow are created. A pilgrimage through the dense forest, with its heavy roof of tree tops, causes an inner state of tranquility. The fragments of the grid will guide the visitors along a fluent transition, through the forest and into the architecture. When the visitors are moving towards the site, they will partake in a journey that meanders through the landscape before they arrive at the church complex. This journey will be defined by a fragmented structure that is placed throughout the nature. The functions of the complex are placed in a rectangular motion, interconnected by a flat roofed common space where courtyards are formed, surrounding the preserved trees.

BSC DIPLOMA PROJECT - SHELTER FOR A WANDERER ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// TYPE: School project - diploma thesis // TIME: 02.2014-07.2014 // LOCATION: Sochocin, Poland // AUTHOR: Natalia Okolus //RESPONSIBILITIES: Developing the project from scratch until finish // ABSTRACT: The subject of the project is a bicycle shelter located by the route ‘Zielona 7’ – an alternative, bicycle road leading from Warsaw to Gdansk. The route ‘Zielona 7’ is an interesting initiative, definitely worth supporting. Decision to locate refuge in Sochocin, Mazovia, 70 kilometers to north from Warsaw was taken after thorough analysis of values and needs of the route as well as after assessment, what such type of a building can offer to the area. On Sochocin, which is destined to be a touristic locality, refuge may have a significant impact. The locality is crossed by picturesque Wkra river. There is a plan to build on the river a retention reservoir, locaed next to Sochocin. It is going to have recreational functions as well. Locating the shelter in such a place like Sochocin I started thinking about: What the building can give local community? As the plot is located near the center of the village and it has a good connection with the river, it can become an important place also for local people. Strengers who visit Sochocin as they are traveling through “Zielona 7” shouldn’t take over the place. The sed changes not only in the plan but also in the shape of the building. This simple gesture opens the building to the south. Bigger space created in the southern side of the building is reserved for social functions while northern - thinner part is used as a technical space. A height of the building is changing as well as a shape of the roof.

INNOSITE COMPETITION - BETWEEN INDUSTRY AND CITY ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// TYPE: Competition project // TIME: 08.2014 // LOCATION: Copenhagen, Denmark // AUTHOR: Natalia Okolus, Mateusz Płoszaj-Mazurek //RESPONSIBILITIES: Developing the project from scratch until finish //AWARDS: 2nd Place // ABSTRACT: The assignment of the competition was to come up with ideas how to reuse a space of an old green market. The old market’s building is a center of an area which will undergo a massive transformation into a residential district. It is important to carefully plan how the area will look like during the process. Our proposal is to reuse the structuural grid of the market hall and create a new city-like object. The whole concept is based on mixing different activities and creating sustainable neighbourhood. Old structural grid will be reused to organize the area. The plan will look like a city - it will consist of many different objects that work together to create larger structure. New market hall will create a meetup place for different age groups. Children, students, adults, and elderly will mix with each other. The object will be easily adaptable. The single unit of the grid can be rented out and modified by a group of people. The idea is to make the areaevolve in a longer process. People can select a single unit in the grid and adapt it to their needs. the structure is open - any space can be treated individually.

BSC 07 PROJECT - PUBLIC LIBRARY IN WARSAW ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// TYPE: School project // TIME: 10.2013-01.2014 // LOCATION: Warsaw, Poland // AUTHOR: Natalia Okolus //RESPONSIBILITIES: Developing the project from scratch until finish // ABSTRACT: Public library is a special type of a building which has to cope with the needs of different users. People who use it are different - it has to be place for children, students, adults, workers and elders. The amount of different functions which has to be placed in the library is huge and nowadays, it goes beyond simple reading and borrowing books. It should be a place of integration for local community and it should stimulate contacts between generations . From the other hand every group of users should has it’s individual space because it uses the building in a very different way. Trying to reconcile all the needs of different groups of users the functional layout is based on the analysis of participation of different users in every function in the library according to the schemes. Facade of the building consist of a brick structure. It’s open work and its depth is 25 cm. The main role of this structure is to regulate the amount of sunlight comming into the building.

COMPETITION PROJECT - ROAD TO FREEDOM ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// TYPE: Competition project - internship // TIME: 09.2014-11.2014 // LOCATION: Gdańsk, Poland // AUTHOR: Grupa 5 Architekci, Natalia Okolus, Mateusz Płoszaj-Mazurek //RESPONSIBILITIES: Developing the concept, preparing drawings, posters, visualizations, 3d model and 3d animation. //AWARDS: 1st Place // ABSTRACT: Road to freedom was a big international competition. The task was to create a public space pedastrian street in the old shipping yard area in Gdansk.- place connected with Solidarnosc. Today, the ship yard is unused and city hall of Gdansk wants to revive the area. The idea of this proposal is to create an orchard of apple trees. As an apple is somehow a symbol of Poland,, the orchard has its own symbolic meaning. It relates to such values as “freedom” and “solidarity”.The trees create also an intimate space for everybody. It’s a space whithout any pathetic meaning. The project was developed during my internship in Grupa 5 Architekci , one of the biggest architectural offices in Poland. Project won the 1st prize and Grupa 5 architekci got the chance to prepare the exectutive project. Road to freedom will be built in 2015.

BSC 06 - MULTISTOREY HOUSING IN HORSENS ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// TYPE: School project/ competition project // TIME: 02.2013 - 06. 2013 // LOCATION: Horsens, Denmark // AUTHOR: Natalia Okolus, Mateusz Płoszaj-Mazurek, Panna Heteny, Andrea Munteanu //RESPONSIBILITIES: Developing the project from scratch until finish, concept, main drawings, visualizations, details //AWARDS: 1st prize in student voting and 3rd prize from professional jury // ABSTRACT: Project was developed during the 6th semester at VIA Univerisity College. It was made by a group of four students. Project was awarded 1st prize in student voting and 3rd prize by professional jury. The main idea about the project was to fit it in the surroundings: small Danish city of Horsens. The area consisted of small houses and building. We decided to make the building look smaller by dividing it into few visual parts. Additionally we wanted to make this building look like a set of smaller houses. We wanted to achieve a feeling of “privacy gradient”. The area near the road should be a public space and be able to be used by anyone, not only by the people living there. This should be the place where habitants meet other people. Next we have the central plaza with a tree. This is the place where both staircases meet. This creates a place where every habitant living here can meet when going to work or school. This is the place where everybody says “Hi!” to each other.

COMPETITION PROJECT- ORIGAMI BENCHES ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// TYPE: Competition project // TIME: 03..2013-05.2013 // LOCATION: Horsens, Denmark // AUTHOR: Natalia Okolus, Mateusz PĹ‚oszaj - Mazurek //RESPONSIBILITIES: Developing the project from scratch until finish //AWARDS: 1st Prize // ABSTRACT: The origami bench was awarded 1st prize in a competition organized by Horsens Kommune for Via University College students. The subject was to design new sitting furniture for the city. 9 benches were produced by Learnmark, and they were placed in the city centre of Horsens during the summer and autumn 2013. As they were very popular, they came back after the winter had ended. Project was made in collaboration with Mateusz PĹ‚oszaj -Mazurek. The first thing we decided about the project was to use as small amount of material as we can. That is why we decided on triangular shape of the bench allowing to cut many pieces from one steel sheet without generating any waste. We decided to use steel as a material to simplify the projects.

COMPETITION PROJECT - ARTHAUSS MODULAR HOUSE ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// TYPE: Competition project // TIME: 4.2013 - 5.2013 // LOCATION: Poland // AUTHORS: Natalia Okolus, Mateusz Płoszaj- Mazurek //RESPONSIBILITIES: Developing the project from scratch until finish //AWARDS: 2nd Prize // ABSTRACT: The competition was organised by Polish company Arthauss which specialises in modular housing projects. The task was to design an interesting and original housing concept that uses only 3 diffrent module sizes. The living room is located next to the atrium allowing the habitants to constantly see what is happening there. The dimensions of the builiding are based on the shapes of the modular containers producced by Arthauss Company. The functions were divided into day activities and night activities. This shaped the main two parts. The parts were created using 2 standard container modules. The main idea of the house, was to open it to the inside. By adding two small modules we created a courtyard (atrium) that became a heart of the house. It’s a tiny house for 2+2 family. The plan is very simple. All the bedrooms are located in one of bigger containers - being in the “night”part. The second container is the living room with the kitchen. The connection beteen those 2 parts is made with enterance module and toilet. The atrium connects both parts and makes a perfect place to spend free time.

COMPETITION PROJECT - IKEA KITCHEN ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// TYPE: Competition project // TIME: 12.2014 // LOCATION: Poland // AUTHOR: Natalia Okolus //RESPONSIBILITIES: Developing the project from scratch until finish // ABSTRACT: The assignment of the competition was to design a proposal for a very tiny kitchen for the family of four members. The space avaliable was a room of 2,3x 2,8 m. The kitchen should be functional and serve as a place to eat for the whole family. As it was a competiion organized by Ikea, one of the requirements was to use the Method kitchen furniture set for a proposal. The idea bases of the concept of a table being the most important place in the kitchen and in the whole home. It’s a center point and a heart of many houses. So it’s hard to imagine the real kitchen without a table. Then the problem was formulated: how I can fit the table into such a small space? The solution occured to be very simple and obvious.. The table has been placed in the middle of the room. It’s a fully movable piece of furniture which can adjust to the actual needs of family members. It can become an additional workspace, serve for family meals. What’s more it can be changed into the bar or a place to put computer and watch movies. This single piece of furniture organizes the space in the whole kitchen. It creates the kitchen around the table!

BSC 07 URBAN PROJECT - MASTER PLAN IN RADOM ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
// TYPE: School project // TIME: 10.2013 - 01.2014 // LOCATION: Radom, Poland // AUTHORS: Natalia Okolus, Mateusz Płoszaj-Mazurek //RESPONSIBILITIES: Developing the project from scratch until finish // ABSTRACT: It’s an urban project of masterplan for one of a central districs in Radom. Radom is a medium size city located 100 km from Warsaw. The area of Piotrówka is a really interesting and valuable space as it’s located in the middle of the town. It also has a special meaning for Radom as it’s a place of an old mediaeval borough. It’s a place where the history of Radom started. Unfortunately, today the area is neglected and its potential is unused. The idea of the masterplan is to completely change the function of a district from industrial into more residential and recreational. We would like to use old and abandoned factories and transform them into public functions like culture centre. We would like to emphasize also that now the area is full of greenery with a stream crossing in the middle of the place. We would like to create a big park in the central point of the area which could then, spread into more residential and public functions. At first we had to design conceptual plan of a district. It was preceded by some analysis about existing structure and fututre’s needs. After desigining a concept we had to change it into a master plan structure which consists of drawings and legislative text. Radom is a city with deep problems about urban degeneration.
