Dr Prashant Bhalla never fails to emphasize that leadership is one of our core values as a university. And other values like commitment to excellence, integrity and honesty, an equitable community, academic freedom, intellectual curiosity and collaboration are of equal importance. These articulate who we are. It is in this spirit that the top-of-the-line Central Library was inaugurated at the University by His Holiness Swami Satyamitranand Girji Maharj. On April 4, 2014, His Holiness commented, “The Library is established as a mark of respect to Goddess Saraswati. It is a centre where knowledge in different fields will be derived with great zest and enthusiasm.”

His Holiness also made an auspicious start to a blood donation camp which is a round the year event at the Educational Institutions and showcases our community spirit. All these events are a depiction of values which the institutions embody.

We bring these values to life in all that we do. These principles reaffirm that our campus values unity and respect that Dr O.P. Bhalla believed in. And to have him amongst us every day, a statue was unveiled at the University Campus. While unveiling the statue on April 18, 2014, His Holiness Shri Morari Bapuji, a world

acclaimed exponent of the Ram Charit Manas, said, “I bow my head in gratitude to the farsighted vision and philosophy of Dr O.P.Bhalla. Let his ‘Pratima (statue)’ be an inspiration and engender ‘Pratibha’ (talent) among one and all.”

Each institution of the Manav Rachna Group joined in to pay their tribute to the Founding Father in the last one year. It all began by fulfilling Dr O.P. Bhalla’s desire for reconstruction of the Swarg Ashram opposite the Crown Plaza by giving a total facelift including erection of the Black Granite Gate, fixing white marble slabs with ‘GITA SAAR’ inscribed along with the installation of a ‘Maha Mrityunjay’ Murti.

Hand in hand with community work, we have pushed ahead with our core activity: The spread of quality education. In fact, value education is spread across every aspect of our institutions which makes our students confident, courageous and well groomed to face the challenges of the modern world. It is with this belief in values that we begin every new year with prayers to the Almighty on the first day of the year.This year too, a Maha Mrityunjaya Yajna was held to give an auspicious start to the year and to remember the values that our Founder Father strongly believed in.

Serving society is yet another aspect which teaches us values and was close to the heart of our Founder Chancellor Dr O.P.Bhalla. Keeping his vision of a healthy society in mind, a dental camp was organized at the Manav Rachna Dental College where denture kits were distributed by respected Mrs Satya Bhalla, Dr Amit Bhalla and Dr N. C. Wadhwa. Mrs Satya Bhalla interacted with patients and took their feedback on the kind of services that the Dental College had rendered. The Manav Rachna Dental College paid tribute to the Founding Father by providing Community dental treatments and serving the under privileged in the months of March and April when a team of 15 members were present at NAB and SOS Children’s Village. A screening programme for oral cancer was also conducted at Mata Ka Mandir, NIT, Faridabad, Anangpur village, Chhaysa Village, Health Unit, Railway Station, Old Faridabad. And keeping the vision of a healthy society a Physiotherapy camp was also held by FAS where items of daily utility were distributed by Mrs Satya Bhalla to patients who had come from far and near to the centre at the University campus Keeping in tune with his desire for community service the Faculty of Management Studies, Manav Rachna International University organized the ‘Ek Mutthi Daan’ campaign. A humble beginning in early eighties from a Co-operative Housing Movement to an Educational Movement in 1997 called “MANAV RACHNA”. During the journey of seventeen years, he established seven international schools, a deemed University, an Engineering College, a Dental College, a college of education and a community radio station, the only and the first in Faridabad. The visionary philanthropist changed the identity of the city from an industrial town to an Educational Hub, making the city a better place for education.

Founder Visionary Dr O. P. Bhalla was passionate about innovation and technology. The Dr. O. P. Bhalla Innovation and Incubation Centre (DOPBIIC), a seminal initiative of Manav Rachna International University, has been commemorated in his memory to pay tribute to his vision of encouraging research and propelling students to bring their pioneering ideas to the shop floor. DOPBIIC caters to the needs of students and faculty members who are oriented towards research and development and are buzzing with new and innovative ideas. DOPBIIC is fully equipped with design, fabrication and manufacturing facilities, which are available to the users on a 24x7 basis.. The facilities are available to students to participate in International/National projects and competitions and also to those who are working on their own ideas. The focus is on applied research leading to patents, research publications in reputed Journals/ Conferences and generation of IRPs. Another dimension and as part of the Founder’s Day celebration Manav Rachna honoured its Alumni who have taken the flag of the Institutions to great heights. Keeping fit through sports was yet another facet of life which our Founder Father believed in and therefore the 7th Manav Rachna Coroprate Cricket Challenge 2014 was dedicated as the Dr O. P. Bhalla Cricket Memorial Cup. This cup will continue to foster sports as an effective medium to quality education and also focus on building good corporate relations since national and multi national companies look forward to this yearly tournament. Dr Amit Bhalla, Vice President believes in following the idea of his Father relating to sports. Dr Amit believes that Winners don’t wait for chances, they take them. There are only two options regarding commitment; you’re either in or you’re out. There’s no such thing as life in-between. If you train hard, you’ll not only be hard, you’ll be hard to beat. In order to excel, you must be completely dedicated to your chosen sport. And in keeping with this the 4th Manav Rachna Inter Faculty and Staff Badminton and Table Tennis Tournament held in June 2014 was dedicated to the memory of the Founder Chancellor.

The guru-shishya tradition is a relationship, based on the genuineness of the guru, and the respect, commitment, devotion and obedience of the student, is the best way for subtle or advanced knowledge to be conveyed. The student eventually masters the knowledge that the guru embodies. And it is this tradition which the Manav Rachna Family will continue to follow where our Founder Chancellor will always be our Guru and each one of us his shishya. And keeping in mind that the Founder was a teacher of the highest esteem, a tree plantation drive was organized on September 5, 2014 where Mrs Satya Bhalla, Dr. Prashant Bhalla, Dr. M. M. Kathuria, Dr. N.C.Wadhwa and other dignitaries like Dr. R. K. Chauhan, Vice Chancellor, Lingyas University, Dr. Victor Gambhir, Vice Chancellor, JECRC University Jaipur graced the occasion.

THE VISION OF DR. O. P. BHALLA CARRIES ON...

Today, September 16, 2014, was a solemn day, a year gone by since Founder Chancellor Dr. O.P.Bhalla left for his heavenly abode leaving the entire Manav Rachna family to grief his loss.

The day began with a hawan which ushered in a somber mood with bhajan and kirtans adding to the pious surroundings of the early morning peace at the Dr. O. P. Bhalla Memorial Sthal situated in the midst of the University. An arena for meditation where blessings of the Founder Chancellor will be a guiding light in every step we take forward ...

A mega Blood Donation camp was organized at different venues across the Campus under the aegis of Dr O.P.Bhalla Foundation. Inaugurating the camp was Dr. Suprabha Dahiya, IAS (Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Faridabad) along with Mrs. Satya Bhalla, Chairperson, Dr. O. P. Bhalla Foundation; Dr. Prashant Bhalla, Chancellor, MRIU; Dr. Amit Bhalla, VP, MREI, Dr M.M.Kathuria, Member Dr. N. C. Wadhwa Vice Chancellor MRIU and other senior dignitaries.

The blood donation camp was assisted by Lions Club of Faridabad & Rotary Club in association with Manav Rachna Leo Club and they collected around 1200 units of blood. Medical support and equipment was provided by an able team of doctors from B K Hospital, Faridabad and Santon Ka Gurudwaraalong with Rotary International.

To support the Haryana Government’s endeavor, an amount of `5 lac was donated to Red Cross Society for the victims of Kashmir Floods by Dr. O. P. Bhalla Foundation. Apart from this, the employees of Manav Rachna have also donated one day’s salary under the aegis of Dr. O. P. Bhalla Foundation to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund for the victims of Kashmir Floods.

He shaped an education movement called Manav Rachna, which is a name to reckon with on the education landscape of the country today. With Manav Rachna Educational Institutions (MREI), Dr. O. P. Bhalla took a step towards shaping better human beings. MREI stays committed to train and equip students with latest knowledge and skills in the chosen fields. Through schools, colleges and institutions of higher education, MREI delivers value- based education to enable students to face global challenges. Dr. O. P. Bhalla has left behind a rich legacy of excellence and hard work.

To salute the spirit of the legendary visionary, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions (MREI) has formed the Dr. O. P. Bhalla Foundation. The foundation is a registered trust with philanthropy as its sole objective. The Foundation is committed to work towards Dr. O. P. Bhalla’s ideals of nation building. It aims to undertake developmental activities, research and training in various fields, such as education, sustainable development and environmental protection, gender equality, health and well being etc. Through its sustained efforts, the Dr. O. P. Bhalla Foundation has already initiated work to strengthen education systems, responding to global challenges through transformative education.

Special onus has been placed on protecting and reviving our rich cultural and natural heritage. Specifically for the needs of the youth in India, the foundation is working for training and capacity building of people. This will help in attaining employment opportunities. For the betterment of our society, it is essential to protect our environment. In this domain, the foundation is undertaking various activities for energy conservation, creating awareness about green energy etc.

A VILLAGE NAMED ‘MOHNA’ Mohna is situated in the Faridabad district of Haryana and has a population of 25,000.There are five villages surrounding Mohna.

Ballabhgarh is the nearby town from the village that is approximately 27 KM from Mohna. The first sight of the village pro-

vides a superficial view of a well developed and advanced small town but the ground realities are quite different from what appears. The team spent hours inspecting the village. They talked to the villagers and the Sarpanch to trace out the true picture and actual conditions of the various aspects of the daily life. The core problems of the village can be divided into three important areas that need to be looked after for the overall development of Mohna, are Education, Health and Environment.

Education is the key of development for any society. As far as primary and secondary education is concerned, there are two Government Schools and three private schools up to senior secondary level but there is not a single college in the village. Hence, it can be stated that the status of primary education seems satisfactory but the lack of a college for higher education in Mohna has caused a lot of problems at various levels. One of the major problems is that the girls are forced to marry at an early age after completing their primary education as people are afraid of sending their wards to nearby town Ballabhgarh for security reasons.

Even if the girls don’t get married after completing their senior secondary education, generally they sit idle at their home. In view of the above mentioned problems, a college in the village is the need of the hour especially for girls of Mohna. The same problem is prevalent in the adjacent villages as well and a Girls college in Mohna will be an asset in dealing with the social problems like early marriage and girl’s education of the entire region.

The second important issue for concern is health. Mohna has

a Government hospital situated in the heart of the village along with some private clinics. The hospital is not fully equipped and doesn’t have adequate facilities to deal with the emergency cases.

Due to this, the villagers have to depend largely on the hospitals of Ballabhgarh for primary treatment. People who are below poverty line have to face major problems as they don’t have any choice and money to afford treatment in the nearby town. The number of doctors is also less as compared to any other government hospitals. Hence, the government hospital is required to be monitored by the local government and the basic facilities should be provided for the best possible medical treatment for the villagers.

A healthy environment helps in making a place worth living and it is supposed to have a fair environment conditions in the villages. It is important to keep our surrounding clean and tidy but one of the most serious problems of the Mohna is garbage disposal and drainage system. There is no drainage facility in the village. The villagers dump the garbage at a common open area in the village including the garbage from the hospitals and clinics which is burnt there only. The smoke and the dirt are filled in the air making the environment hard to breathe causing several health hazards. The villagers are not educated enough to understand that this is serious matter to think upon and important measures are required for garbage disposal. The basic objectives of the visit were to look into the details of the problems of Mohna and to find out the ways to make it an ideal village. It is in this context, it is recommended that the above mentioned problems should be brought to the notice of the local government and important steps should be taken to ensure that the issues are heard and solved respectively. In this respect, students of Faculty of media studies will be covering the stories sighting

the basic problems of the village and the stories will be published by the Hindi daily Hindustan, which has given its consent for the same as the media partner.

The step taken by Manav Rachna University will be a source of inspiration for other organizations of fulfilling the corporate social responsibility and will add one more feather to the university’s cap that believes in value based education, over all development of the society and creating better human being.

SOLID WASTE SEGREGATION – TRAINING FOR HOUSE KEEPING STAFF ON 13TH JUNE 2014 A training was conducted on waste segregation for the Class IV employees of Manav Rachna, who are involved in waste disposal. Through the training, the employees have been educated on how to segregate waste and thereby contribute towards recycling and saving the environment.

Dustbins in triplicate were deployed at 9 strategic positions in MRIU campus to bring about segregation of waste and inculcate this habit among students and employees of MRIU. The waste was segregated as: a) Organic waste b) Tetra packs and paper plates c) Miscellaneous

EK MUTTHI DAAN A Step towards a movement where No-one sleeps hungry Growth and development are the buzzwords today. At every forum, discussions of people from various walks of life are centered on the pace at which development is taking place. Regions are compared on the basis of these statistics. However, we usually overlook how much of this ‘betterment’ is percolating to those at the bottom of the economic pyramid. There are crores in our country who cannot still afford two square meals a day, leave alone the other amenities.

In a humble attempt to further Dr. Bhalla’s vision, the Dr. O P Bhalla Foundation started the Ek Mutthi Daan campaign in March 2014. Chief patron of MRIU, Mrs. Satya Bhalla inaugurated the campaign at Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), MRIU, by donating the first handful of rice towards the ‘Ek Mutthi Daan’. Through this campaign, all constituents of the MREI family have come together to donate for the underprivi-

It is vision which has given birth to the Dr. O.P. Bhalla Innovation and Incubation Centre (DOPBIIC).

DOPBIIC is fully equipped with design, fabrication and manufacturing facilities, which are available to the users on a 24x7 basis. The proposed areas are mechanical, automobile, electrical, electronics, computer science, biotechnology, non-conventional energy etc. The focus is on applied research leading to patents, research publications in reputed Journals/ Conferences and generation of IRPs, with the ultimate aim of improving employability skills of the University Graduates. Headed by Professor B.S. Gill, an eminent applied engineering researcher, DOPBIIC is the crucible where students at Manav Rachna incubate their dream projects. Recent accolades that have catapulted Manav Rachna’s students into the limelight include: The Accenture Innovation Jockey Competition-2014 powered by Yahoo India held at Ben-

Microsoft Imagine Cup Finals 2014 held at Seattle (Washington), USA in July, 2014 where Team CodeBlue from the Dr O.P. Bhalla Innovation and Incubation Centre was selected among the top 5 world finalists in Imagine Cup Apps for Office Challenge 2014. The Team comprising Ankur Bhalla, Jehi Jha, Neha Valecha and Saurabh Kanwar proposed an Office App idea named ‘Molecule Maker’ which impressed the judges on the Microsoft Office team.Team CodeBlue, being selected as one of the two finalists, was flown to Seattle for the Imagine Cup World Finals in late July, 2014. It received the second prize in the world finals and was awarded a cash prize worth $3,000 for their innovative app. The award was presented to the team by John Case, Corporate Vice President, Microsoft Office Division.

At DOPBIIC, students’ innovative ideas are nurtured by mentors, resulting in path breaking creations which have won plaudits at national and international platforms. If the Electronics Pills Box was designed as a portable reminding device to provide audio visual alerts to patients to take the right dose at the right time where the scheduling could be done using Smartphone Application or PC, the Smart Skull was created to send accident notification to the nearest hospital or the victim’s relatives in the shortest possible time.The project got selected as one of the best 20 innovations in Wearable Technologies Innovation World Cup 2013.

There have been other amazing inventions in the past like the Swasthya Sanjivani, an affordable, approachable, easy-to-use and automatic on-the-spot blood and urine testing system with immediate confirmatory results covering diseases such as anemia, diabetes, jaundice and renal damage which won the 1st prize in the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2013 in India, in two categories

(Innovation & World Citizenship). The project represented India in the world finals at St. Petersburg, Russia. International recognition has also poured in for the Tractorobot, a robot controlled Tractor project, which fetched the Gold Medal at the National level with a prize of `Ten Lakh in the Intel Embedded Challenge Imagine Cup 2011 competition; awards have been conferred on the All Terrain Vehicle-1 with its powerful 305 cc engine which won the “Best Innovation Award” in BAJA SAE India.

Such has been the impetus at DOPBIIC, Manav Rachna’s students have created the Efficycle, a hybrid vehicle having a motor of 1 horse power which was claimed to be the most comfortable vehicle by the SUBROS panel in Chandigarh. Early in February this year, students at Manav Rachna who were the brains behind the First Diesel Urban Car with a mileage of 123 km/l took part in the Fuel Economic vehicle competition, Shell ECO Marathon 2014 held in Manila, Philippines. This light weight vehicle is equipped with driver fitness tester which does not allow a person to drive the car under the influence of alcohol. More recently, Manav Rachna’s students reached the national finals of the Microsoft Imagine Cup. The top three positions at Microsoft Imagine Cup 2014 India national finals were secured by teams from DOPBIIC with innovations that included RespirON, Mov-Aid, Smart Skull and Saviour Suit. A formula car was next on the cards as Team Synchromesh of Manav Rachna International University custom designed a Formula race car to take part in the Formula Student Germany (FSG) Competition in Hockenheim, Germany. The Team was one among the 9 teams from India that had been shortlisted to participate in the ‘Formula Student Germany Competition’ which tested participants for their overall package of construction, performance, financial and sales planning. With innovation being a way of life at Manav Rachna, the institution has taken a quantum leap in Research and Development in recent years.This significant development is corroborated by around 3000 research publications in International Journals, National Journals, International Conferences and National Conferences. It includes over 450 research papers listed in the Scopus database. As many as 77 patents have been filed / granted to faculty and students. Earlier seven research proposals worth `1.33 Crores have been submitted by faculty members for getting research grant from Government agencies.

It is worth noting that in recognition of the outstanding contribution made by MRIU in R&D activities, MRIU was conferred with the

ASSOCHAM (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) Education Excellence Awards 2014, for the Best Private University Promoting Research. MRIU has been consistently encouraging and supporting its faculty to undertake research by providing financial assistance and laboratory wherewithal. Faculty members are encouraged to attend Faculty Development Programmes both within and outside the University.

Needed computational assets by way of specialized software are made available to students and faculty to carry out research analysis at an advanced stage.

OTHER OUTSTANDING LAURELS MRIU is the only University chosen by Government of Haryana to represent the innovations of young students by the state at the India International Trade Fair held at Pragati Maidan for the last two years.. MRIU students have displayed a host of their projects at the Haryana Pavilion in IITF and wowed the visitors. Be it the Tractrobot, Smart Blind Stick, Pick and Place Robot, Pills box, Smart Skull, Smart Efficycle or the All Terrain vehicles (both ATV bike and ATV1 car), the crowds were mesemerised by the innovative objects on display.

As another recent feather to our cap, is when our students at Manav Rachna were invited at the ‘Innovation Summit 2014’ on 17th September, 2014, by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) to demonstrate their Innovative projects. To boost innovation at the Institutional level, PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PHDCCI) organized the exhibition – “Innovations Unplugged 2.0” showcasing innovative products/software designed by students and entrepreneurs across all sectors. The summit and exhibition was inaugurated by Shri Kalraj Mishra, Union Minister for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Manav Rachna was among the select few institutes--which also included IIT Delhi--from across the country that had been invited to showcase their innovative work at the exhibition.The Summit’s theme ‘Enhancing Innovative Capacities of MSMEs was presented by Mr S.K. Sarkar, Chairman, Committee on Innovation, PHD Chamber while Mr Sharad Jaipuria, President, PHD Chamber, delivered the welcome address.

The event also focused on ‘Innovative Strategies for Sustainable MSME Financing’ and ‘Enterprise and Skill Development for MSMEs. The projects of our students put on display at the Summit was a major attraction at the Summit as crowds thronged to catch glimpses of the projects which earned plenty of accolades in the process.

What made the team at TechnoPlanet of MRIIC a class apart is the fact that they proposed an Office app idea named ‘Molecule Maker’ which impressed the judges on the Microsoft Office team immensely. “Our App will make a molecular diagram from the input that the user gives and we even plan to have zooming features in our project which will be supported by MS Powerpoint Word and Excel,” gushed Jehi. Her teammate Neha was equally enthusiastic, thanking her seniors from MRCE who are fellow members of TechnoPlanet and their parents “for their incessant help and support” in encouraging them for the project. ‘NARI KA SAMMAN’: A COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY A Manch discussion for Manav Rachna’s students on the topic ‘Nari ka Samman’ was organized by the Manav Rachna Literary Forum at the audio visual room of the Central Library.

H

eld on 29th August, 2014, the discussion forum attracted a niche gathering of 22 students from different streams of MREI. The students were quite vocal and a deeply sensitized lot who had done their homework well. They spoke about women-centric issues and the varying degrees of torture and humiliation that women have been subjected to. Some of them even quoted poems, datas and figures, citing case studies (such as the Nirbhaya incident) to highlight their points. The fact that the discussion was in Hindi gave them an opportunity to express their proficiency in the language.

While students like Neha talked

about the glass ceiling in Indian society and harassment at the workplace, Simran Sindhu said that the lack of respect for women is prevalent not just in India but everywhere in the world. While blaming society, many of the boys among the participants felt that girls need to dress appropriately and not take risks by going out at unearthly hours to pubs and parties. But they all accepted the fact that women were at the receiving end and not given her due place in society. As Vinayak reiterated, “Women are integral to society and it is time we men woke up to the reality.”

Harshajit Barua pointed out that in a country like India where women are deified as mothers and considered a

manifestation of shakti, women are tortured and shorn of their dignity.

Empathising greatly with the embittered women of our society, Ragini Sharma said a tad cynically, “A woman’ s struggle begins right from the womb. We bring our girls into a society that is greatly unequal.” Her thoughts were echoed by Priyanka Agarwal who felt that women are ignored and repressed even in their own families. The group discussion also veered round the fact that there are laws in our country to protect women but seldom implemented to suit their needs. Speaking to students at the session, Professor I.K. CELEBRATING 67 YEARS OF INDIAN INDEPENDENCE Manav Rachna Educational Institutions held a series of events to mark the 67th year of India’s Independence with events covering extempore speeches, dance and music, a sketching competition and a free health check-up camp sorbed in the History, Politics, Sports, Geography, Mythology & Science of India, fourteen teams participated in the India Quiz 2.0 prelims and as many as seven qualified for the remaining rounds. The Quiz was managed by 4th year mechanical students from FET — Vishnu Aditya Kashyap and Vinay Kumar Tolambia. First year FET students — Shrishti Kshmata & Arvind Sharma bagged the first position.The Free Health Camp by a team of Doctors from Sarvodya Hospital, where almost 200 students and faculty members got a free health checkup done by some of the expert doctors from Faridabad. CRICKETING LEGEND STEPHEN PAUL FLEMING VISITS MANAV RACHNA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY Stephen Paul Fleming, former Captain of the New Zealand Cricket team and the present Coach of ‘Chennai Super Kings’ visited Manav Rachna International University (MRIU) recently. Hundreds of excited students got the rare opportunity to listen to the cricketing legend and also interact with him Stephen Paul Fleming delivered a motivational lecture to the students of MRIU. He also conducted a small quiz on General Knowledge for the students. The students with the right answers were given personally autographed bats by Mr. Fleming.

In his address, Stephen Fleming mentioned that India and New Zealand have a lot in common. Particularly, the fact that cricket is considered as a religion in both these countries.

He also stated that the two countries have a strong value-based education system.

An Andrioid app was developed so that participants can have access to all the information in their pockets. The app could be downloaded from the Google Play Store.

With Emcee Maddie anchoring the event and DJ Sumit Sethi playing chartbusting numbers, the stage was all set! The venue, A Block Auditorium, was packed to capacity, as the participants took to the stage, cheered on by their friends and fans (some of them have a very large following). This was one opportunity they were not going to miss, for here was a chance to showcase their talent and add value to the Manav Rachna brand.

he HT City Fresh on Campus event, organized at the MRIU campus on 9 September 2014 had all the ingredients of a youth event. Not deterred by the sweltering heat, hundreds of students participated with great zest in the series of activities organized by HT City in the Central Lawn.

While some freshers clad in their cool casuals jived to regional music, others were seen swaying to Bollywood 90s numbers.

The most sought-after event ‘Veet Be the Diva Contest’ had a bevy of beautiful Freshers competing for the crown. Samyukta Singh, a fresher from CSC, FET won the coveted title following a rigorous round of ramp walk, talent and Q&A sessions. The runner up for the crown was Prachi from the CSC, FET.

MS has welcomed MBA/ MA (Applied Psychology) batch of 2014-’16, and B. Sc. (Hotel Management) batch of 2014’17. The 225- strong batch started their tenure at FMS in July 2014 with formal Orientation program, followed by a rigorous month- long workshop on Management skills and Learning workshop. But professionals today are expected to work hard, and party even harder. The senior students of both under graduate and post graduate courses of FMS brought in this opportunity by organizing Parichay 2014- Freshers’ Welcome Party for the new batches. The spectacular event was held on Sep. 9, ’14. Efforts of all students of FMS culminated in a memorable event, the theme for which was ‘Retro’.

Going down memory lane, the stylish youth turned out in wonderful colours from the past. With lilting retro Bollywood numbers playing in the background, students arrived clad in dresses and hair styles reminiscent of the 1970’s and 1980’s. All members of the faculty and staff of FMS were also in sync with the theme, adding to the colour of the occasion. The stage was continuously alive with splendid performances by the new students.

The pack of students includes proficient dancers, actors, singers and poets. The cultural performances were interspersed with declaration of results and rounds of Mr. and Ms. Parichay. The initial rounds of elimination were held before the event. As judges, faculty members had a real tough time eliminating the immensely talented and exuberant students from the competition.

As the program proceeded, the excitement among the audience only increased. Wit, nerves and personality came together as the last few in the competition answered questions from the judges. They talked about choices between family and job opportunities, the biggest fears in life, and sacrifices for friends among others. The day ended with students dancing to foot- tapping numbers.

It was yet another event which FMS organized successfully, with planning and execution done entirely by the students. As Dean FMS Dr. Chavi says, “FMS is training ground for students, preparing them for their professional endeavours.

ELECTION ROUND UP

Thirty five students of FMes were assigned to maintain and update the results of the 16th Lok Sabha Elections on Rajya Sabha TV Channel. Each student was deployed to contact the stringer of a particular constituency and keep updating the poll trends/results. They were also given a remuneration of Rs. 3,500/- each for two days i.e. 15.05.2014 and 16.05.2014. Here, they share their experiences on the two-day stint at Rajya Sabha TV during the election results good and the mentors too. I hope we get more of these opportunities in the coming days.

My experience was fabulous.We worked till 11 pm on 15th May and on the 16th May, we had to report sharp at 4:30 am. All of us had enjoyed the exposure given by our University and Rajya Sabha TV. It was as though we were working for an MNC. All the students had to talk to the stringers who were active in different parts of India and ask them who is leading from their constituency. I was assigned Maharashtra and Madhya Pradhesh. I am grateful to my University and Head of the Department for giving us such an opportunity to learn and excel.

This workshop was executed under the guidance of trained faculty from Richa Nritya & Kala Society, New Delhi which was enjoyed by all the participants. The workshop saw participation of nearly 70 students from different faculties and institutions of Manav Rachna in the first slot from 12 to 1 pm. The second slot from 1:30 - 2:30 pm was attended by twelve faculty and staff members of Manav Rachna. The participants of both the slots danced to some energetic Gujrati songs and hit Dandiya chords to produce harmonious Manavites got a taste of the Gujrati culture.

mbarking upon its seventh year of operation, FMS undertakes to create global thought leaders for a better tomorrow. The orientation program formally commenced on 21st July, 2014. It is divided into two parts: The Orientation program (July 21- 23, 2014), followed by Management Skills and learning workshop (July 24- Aug. 14, 2013). The entire programme has been designed to : • To familiarize the entrants with various dimensions of the MRIU. • To develop effective communication and presentation skills.

• To groom and motivate the entrants to be knowledgeable and skilled professionals.

• To expand the significance of practical training in the life of a professional.

• To foster values such as integrity, transparency and Independence in the budding professionals.

The programme started with a Havan, seeking the blessings of the almighty. All documentation and records for the students were gathered, including contact information, areas of interest towards clubs and committees and Dr. O P Bhalla Foundation. The Honourable Vice Chancellor, Dr. N C Wadhwa and Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. V K Mahna welcomed the students, inspiring them towards being better and successful human beings. Dr. B K Chandra Shekhar – Guinness Record Holder, Asia Book Record Holder & India Book Record Holder, conducted a session about power and management of mind. Apart from training on life skills, the workshops at FMS gave the students room to unwind and know each- other. Sports events were organized at MRIU campus and the stateof- the- art sports academy at MRIS, Sec. 14, Fbd. General Knowledge quiz competitions, theatre workshops, dance demonstration, industry visit to Parle Industries, treasure hunt on campus and many more. Introductory sessions for some parts of the curriculum (economics, mgmt. information systems, statistics and accounts) were held to bring all students on the same plane, as they come from varied educational backgrounds. The orientation programme and workshops will culminate with the Grand Finale to be held on Aug. 12, 2014, followed by Parichay- Freshers’ Welcome Party in the end of the month. With each day filled with excitement and something new to learn, the batch of 2014-16 is geared up to take up training for managerial positions.

He was the architect of Manav Rachna International University and was responsible for us standing here today.” He urged the students to use their time responsibly and purposefully. The programme began on an auspicious note with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and Saraswati Vandana sung by a group of MRDC interns. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Major General A.S. Awasthi said that the admission to MRDC does not begin and end with tuition fees.

“Parents need to audit their ward’s progress on a day to day basis for the students to emerge as confident dental surgeons.” He emphasized upon the importance of regular attendance to attain the right levels of competency.

It is an arena where sport specific nutrition knowledge is offered, integrating both nutrition and sport science principles and skills. It has become increasingly important to provide sports nutrition education to active youth in the community settings such as schools, clubs, University recreation centers, fitness and wellness centers, research teams, active students, faculty, staff and student athletes. It focuses on providing nutrition education to exercising individuals and active community groups with emphasis on health promotion, fitness, weight maintenance and loss and disease prevention. Sport nutrition is a domain where the nutritionists plan, conduct and analyze research in the field of nutrition for exercise and sport using experiential learning opportunities.They work with the industry to establish socially and ethically responsible partnerships for individuals, teams and groups. Therefore, the knowledge of sports nutrition helps to strengthen the skills necessary for evidence based applications and competencies of sports dietitians working with athletes and active individuals in a variety of settings.

There is mounting evidence to the support the notion that regular exercise is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle, and that those who lead active lifestyles stand a reduced risk of developing a range of health concerns, are less likely to get ill and generally live longer. However, actually mustering up the motivation to get active is very challenging for some. Physical activity does not have to be vigorous and anyone from young children, teenagers, adolescents, young adults, middle aged, old aged, pregnant and lactating women can incorporate at least some form of exercise into their daily routine.

The prevalence of obesity in India has risen significantly over the past decade, prompting efforts from the government to increase awareness about the importance of a balanced diet and staying physically active in order to maintain a healthy weight and optimum mental health. To get started at incorporating exercise into one’s lifestyle, whether a body builder or a professional athlete, nutrition and hydration play a key role in physical activity and training, providing with the fuel required in order to carry out the exercise.

uals who frequently train or participate in sport is very important in terms of performance level and progression. Scientific developments and new discoveries about how different food types work within the body mean that athletes can modify their diets to help them excel in their particular sport. VISIT TO BRITANNIA INDUSTRY Faculty of Applied Science, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics organized a one day visit on 19th April 2014 to the Britannia Industries for undergraduate and post graduate students of nutrition and dietetics along with faculty members.The Visit provided an enriched platform for the budding Nutritionists and Dieticians from the Manav Rachna International University to understand the working of the Britannia Industry on the basis of International Standards. The students observed how batter for different varieties of biscuits was prepared at the plant and their manufacturing, packaging under controlled conditions.The whole process was guided to the students by the Safety Officer at the Britannia Industry focusing all the CCP (critical Control Points) at various steps such as use of IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) solution to ensure hygienic handling by the workers.

MRIU offers a five year degree programme in B.Arch in its campus, at Faridabad from the academic year 2014-15. The course is duly recognized by the Council of Architecture and the degree shall be awarded by MRIU Faculty of Planning and Architecture is being headed by Prof. J. Counterpoint, a technology market research firm, finds that Micromax with a 16.6 percent market share has overtaken Samsung (14.4 percent) as the largest mobile phone supplier in Q2 2014. Micromax and Samsung were closely followed by Nokia (10.9 percent), Karbonn (9.5 percent), and Lava (5.6 percent).

The research also revealed that Micromax replaced Nokia for the first time to become the leading feature phone supplier. According to the feature phone shipment data published, Micromax topped the charts with a 15.2 percent share followed by Nokia (now operated

by Microsoft) with 14.7 percent.

Other handset manufacturers following Micromax and Nokia in the feature phone segment were Karbonn (11.4 percent), Samsung (8.5 percent), and Lava (7.3 percent).

Counterpoint also reports that Micromax with a 19.1 percent share is now the second largest smartphone brand in terms of shipments, closely following Samsung (25.3 percent). Meanwhile, Lava (5.9 percent), Motorola (4.3 percent), and Nokia (4 percent) are other top smartphone brands of the country.

Neil Shah of Counterpoint notes, “Micromax has widened the gap

with the third largest smartphone player as the race for the third place is up for grabs with fierce competition between Karbonn, Motorola, Celkon, Nokia, Apple and Sony.”

“This is the vendor which mobile industry will have to keep an eye on as it expands beyond domestic markets. Globally, Micromax also jumped up the rankings becoming the tenth largest handset brand in terms of mobile phone shipment volumes,” added Shah.

Some of the other findings of the market research revealed that Indian mobile phone market grew by 2 percent annually. The smartphone segment, on the other hand, grew an impressive 68 percent annually, while the demand for feature phones dropped to 16 percent annually in Q2, noted Counterpoint. Shah also said, “The surprise performance was from Motorola thanks to its attractive but leaner portfolio of Moto X, Moto G, Moto E and go-to-market strategy.

The brand which could soon be part of Lenovo has built a strong base the India smartphone market.
