Haryana on the verge of becoming a COVID hub? By: Parv Anand

The beginning of year 2021 started on a positive note with India continuing the tradition of declining COVID cases. In this period India recorded less than 20,000 cases for a week ensuring a net decline of 904 in active cases. The COVID vaccine was a long waited unprecedented victory against the unmatched virus. As the world took a step closer toward restoring things back to normal, India is now back to square one. Second wave of COVID has struck India right at the heart of the nation. While major states are already finding it difficult to deal with the new mutation of virus, Haryana sets its focus to avoid the same plight as its neighbouring states.With 73,000 cases in last 3 weeks, Haryana has shown a prodiImage Source- Google Images gious increase in COVID cases. As per the news report of a national daily, in April Haryana recorded a huge spike of 6,842 fresh cases. Gurugram with 1,809 and Faridabad with 1,080 are the two areas who came out with unfavourable results. 33 people died in the beginning of the week. The overall positivity rate from March 31 to April 19 has increased by 0.64%, along with this positivity rate is not looking promising as it has dropped by 8.99%. Currently the recovery rate stands at 86.58%. (NDTV) As things are getting worse day by day in Gurgaon, Faridabad and Sonipat availability of hospital beds for COVID patients will tail off.According to the reports, Health Minister Anil Vij says, “The state has a capacity for 11,000 beds. The district administrations of Gurugram and Faridabad have been authorised to identify buildings and facilities, including hotels, for expansion. The situation is under control.” Also, a committee will be formed to identify patients who do not need hospitalization. Due to this, beds will be readily available for those in need. According to CM Manohar Lal Khattar, there will be no 'lockdown' in Haryana. He also asked labourers to not panic in this situation. Mr. Khattar has also ensured that Haryana has enough oxygen supply for the patients and COVID guidelines will be strictly followed in order to contain this virus. A night curfew has been imposed from 10 pm to 5 am in Haryana. The government has issued guidelines for those who are excluded from this curfew.Indeed, the policy makers have a huge challenge in front of them as the peak is yet to arrive. Page 1
