Mrs Sanyogita Sharma, Director Principal MRIS Charmwood, speaks on building an empathetic and safe environment for our children

We, as a school are providing adequate spaces for mental and emotional counseling. We realize that it is necessary for us to form guidelines to help those who influence the safety of students and school staff while they are in school, on school grounds, on their way to or from school, and involved in school-sponsored activities.

Building an Empathetic and Safe Environment Despite the fact that we involve ourselves in providing the best educational amenities to the students, it has become our prime responsibility, as a school, to provide the physical, mental as well as emotional security to each and every student. In a dynamic and challenging society where children are increasingly influenced by technology, media, public images and peers, schools are gradually becoming dependable for more than just “educating” children. They are assuming major positions in educating students to deal with such pressures. It is the duty of every school to become responsive to the changing needs of students and provide them with not just physical security but be empathetic towards their mental and emotional needs. Although the educational system in India has a responsibility to help all students cope effectively with their education so that they attain full vocational and career skills and concomitant behaviors, conducive to success and lifelong learning, it is also the duty of every school to sensitize everyone to develop empathy for others; understand and accept differences in culture, ethnicity and understand personal realities of individuals with disabilities. An awareness needs to be created to identify safety-compromising behaviors, particularly sexual, substance abuse and violent behaviors as they can have lifelong and life-threatening consequences. We, as a school are providing adequate spaces for mental and emotional counseling. We realize that it is

3

necessary for us to form guidelines to help those who influence the safety of students and school staff while they are in school, on school grounds, on their way to or from school, and involved in school-sponsored activities. We are encouraging children to talk about their concerns and to express their feelings without reducing any child’s apprehensions. It is also essential for the children to know that serious school violence is not acceptable. We stress that schools are safe places by empowering children to take action regarding school safety, encouraging them to report specific incidents such as bullying, threats etc and develop problem solving and conflict resolution skills. We encourage senior children as well to actively participate in student-run anti-violence programmes, ensuring that our child knows how to reach us (or another school member) in case of crisis during the school day. Keeping the dialogue going and making school safety a common topic in discussions rather than just a response to an immediate crisis, is the precedence. We reinforce the interdisciplinary, collaborative, and cohesive approach that is required to create and sustain genuinely safe, supportive schools that meet the needs of a child. Efforts to improve school climate, safety and learning are not separate endeavors and must be designed and implemented as a comprehensive schoolwide approach. — Mrs Sanyogita Sharma, Director Principal, MRIS Charmwood

GURGAON: Shoppers and shopkeepers have suddenly become cautious about garbage disposal at the Vyapar Kendra market in Sushant Lok-1. Thanks to the 20 new garbage bins installed during the ‘HT Clean my Gurgaon campaign’ on Sunday. The garbage bins have been kept in public view therefore, making it accessible for people. T housands of people, including MCG commissioner, residents, shopkeepers, social groups, students and teachers of Manav Rachna International School, had gathered on Sunday morning at the market to kick off ‘HT Clean My Gurgaon’ campaign. The campaign is an effort to bring together people to make the city cleaner. Residents of nearby condominiums such as Hamilton Court and Nirvana Country too joined the cleanliness drive. Availability of dustbins in public places reduces littering and therefore HT began with focusing on commercial areas. Traders were requested to keep two types of dustbins outside their shops in an effort to keep the city clean. Also, the dustbins are movable so that they don’t become stinking eyesores like the old concrete ones. The market, with more than 800 shops, attracts many visitors from Sushant Lok and nearby areas such as DLF 4. The residents of the locality said that this move has motivated them and they will practice waste segregation at home. “When we see that there is a dustbin, we automatically get conscious and throw the waste in the bin and not on the road. By installing dust bins of different colours, it is also easier for us to teach our children about waste segregation and recycling. We all generate waste and therefore managing waste is everyone’s responsibility not just the authority’s,” said Manasi Kapoor, a resident of Sushant Lok-1. The Municipal Cor poration of Gurgaon also decided on Sunday to levy a penalty of R500 on every commercial establishment that does not place dustbins outside their shops and in public view. It also committed to provide 30 garbage bins and 10 benches for the market and assured that the bins will be cleared regularly. Shopkeepers applauded the move and said that the imposition of penalty by the corporation is a good way to deter people from littering. “People tend to throw bottles, plastic bags, in the market. However, now with the penalty being levied and bins being placed at every short interval, littering will reduce to a great extent,” said Surender Rathi, a shopkeeper at Vyapar Kendra.

THOUGHTS THAT MATTER By Dr. M.M.Kathuria

To realize Truth, loyalty to Truth is essential. You must show this loyalty in all your thoughts , words and actions. It is in the practical field of everyday life that you can test your loyalty to Truth, faith in your higher self, love for your Master and sincerely in your spiritual practice. You must have a longing to lead a life of purity. You must know M M Kathuria BRAHMAN is supreme perfection and that, to experience unity with BRAHMAM (Supreme) purification of mind is essential. Concentrate your attention upon means, all the while keeping a mental picture of the goal in view. Alongwith philosophical reflection, you must practice non attachment in every aspect and detail of yourself (जैसे कमल का पत्ता पानी मे रह कर भी िगला नहीं होता). Temptations become powerless when the power of learned ones blessings and your will power protects you in this form of reflection and non- attachment. But success ensures only if you are sincere in your pursuit. Self effort has as much importance in spiritual life as a spirit of self surrender has. Self effort is not in conflict with self surrender. Brave ones plunge into rigorous sadhna without waiting for grace to descend. Integrate your action and thought in the light of Truth which you received from the learned ones or scriptures or your evolutionary experiences if you assert by word the imperishability of the soul while at the same time you are overwhelmed by the fear of death & destruction, how can you remain loyal to the Divine Master within. The fact that emerges from these is this, without ethical and moral purity in your thought and conduct, there is no hope of gaining the spiritual vision.

‘FACE TO FACE’ WITH DR. AMIT BHALLA The ‘Face to Face’ between the students and Dr Amit Bhalla, Vice President, MREI, facilitated an engaging session of inspirational interactions and discussions. Students got the opportunity to learn more about various issues pertaining to education, society and their future careers. The discussion about human rights made the students realize that measures must be taken to ensure equality and rights for individuals and groups wherever necessary The discussion was followed by a remarkable play presented by the students, asserting the importance of ‘Human Rights as a birth right of every individual and their protection as every individual’s responsibility. Dr Amit Bhalla encouraged the students to take inspiration from the life of our honorable Founder Dr. O.P. Bhalla and always be conscious of their social, moral and ethical responsibilities. His inspirational words left an indelible mark on the students. Here are glimpses from those precious moments… Students: Sir, what do you think about increased incidents of child labour in our country? Sir: I believe that every child has a right to live his childhood, he/she has a right to be educated, feel safe and secure and hope for a better tomorrow. Every child has some inherent abilities and talents which need to be discovered and nurtured. Children are the future of a nation-- forcing a child to work against his will is immoral as well as illegal and I would really like that the MREI family including the students should make contribution at their level towards the eradication of this heinous practice. Students: Sir, India is participating in the FIFA 2018 championship, would there be any participation from MREI? Sir: Yes, definitely, we have always encouraged our sports aspirant students and have maintained that the inclusion of sports is imperative for their all round personality development. For the forthcoming FIFA championship, sports aspirants will be provided ample opportunities and training by both national and international coaches and all the other facilities required to showcase their caliber; we hope that the sports persons from Manav Rachna will make their institution and country proud by winning laurels. Students : Sir can you give us some suggestions regarding what can be done to make the children with special needs adjust better to the school environment? Sir: You all should start thinking of them as one of us; that they are no different from us, it is just

that they need a little more help in attaining what comes easily and naturally to you all. All the students should do everything at their level to make them feel comfortable, extend their support and co-operation by being good classmates and peers. Students: Sir what has been the greatest source of inspiration in your life? Sir: My father Dr O.P. Bhallaji has always been my source of inspiration. I always saw him valuing hard work and honesty above all. He taught me to always be conscious of my social, moral and ethical responsibilities and the importance of having a dream and having the courage to follow it with all the might and determination. Students: Sir, whenever we observe somebody begging in the street, we want to help but our elders tell us not to do so, as we might be encouraging a malpractice, we are confused, please advise. Sir: For many years my wife and I used to observe a beggar standing at the intersection near our

19

house, begging from the passersby. I used to stop and give him some money, hoping that it helped him to some extent. One day, instead of giving him money, I asked whether he would like to work and offered him a job. From the very next day, the beggar stopped approaching me. Helping somebody in need is our social as well as moral responsibility, however, it is very important to know whether the kind of help we are extending will help improve that person’s life or is it making the situation worse by making them habitual beggars. In most situations, instead of giving money, it is better to provide them with the help that changes their lives for the better, the help should always be given with the right attitude and in the right direction. Students: Sir, what is your opinion regarding ‘Human Rights’? Sir: We all should realize the importance of ‘Human Rights’ as a birth right of every individual and their protection as every individual’s responsibility. ’Human Rights’ convey the essence of being human, they tell us to be tolerant, empathetic and open minded and promote the attitude of mutual listening and solidarity towards each other and also towards society at large. It all starts from you and permeates the entire society, so start by bringing a change in yourself .We all must try to be the change we want to see around us. Taking inspiration from the entire experience, some of the students volunteered to present a role play, asserting the importance of Human Rights. The heartfelt interaction and extraordinary role play made the experience memorable for all.

LITERARY WEEK KG MRIS -14 organized Literary Week from 19th to 26th December’14 for the kindergarteners so that they can explore English language in a fun way. Literary Week started with independent writing where children went for a nature walk and framed sentences on anything they saw around on their inscription cards. The second day focused on enhancing their creativity even further when they were given a chance to create their own stories on topics like favourite story, jungle, beach etc and displayed their creativity by making their own story calendars. This freedom of expression enhanced their artistic skills. On 23rd December 2014, a magical world was woven for all of us by the elders through the interesting stories they narrated. The stories mesmerized everyone present and made a memorable experience for the kids. Kindergarteners of MRIS-14 opened their cutlery kits and learnt the tips of formal dining in the table manners club on the fourth day of the Literary Week. The children were taught not to chew with open mouth, to keep napkins on their laps while eating. The magical words thank you, please, sorry and excuse me were also woven with the activity itself to enhance their communication skills. neat experience for everyone. On the last day of the Literary Week children chose a variety of topics for their recitation .
