Hidden River Yarns | 4358B Main Street Opened: September 12 Hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday Even if knitting has never skipped across your stream of conscious, give Lisa Kathryn Johnson a few minutes, and you’ll be daydreaming about designs for your fillory cowl. (It’s like a scarf.) Hidden River Yarns sells fine hand-knitting and crocheting yarns, along with a host of related accessories, but that means little to the uneducated majority of us—until you indulge Johnson (or even just spend a few minutes browsing Hidden River’s Facebook page). Then the yarn takes on distinct personalities. Like the illegally-soft Chalet that’s made from alpaca and bamboo. And the acid-green and flamboyant-pink Maxima—neons will be hot this winter—from Manos del Uruguay, a nearly-50-year-old cooperative whose operation is entirely sustainable. Once you’re exposed to quality of this sort, you’ll want to do something with it. This, again, is where Johnson enters the picture. She hosts a “Knit Night,” a social gathering for seasoned knitters and novices alike, on Thursdays. And, classes are in the works. Now that you’ve been briefed, feel free, as Johnson says, to “get your knit on.” www.hiddenriveryarns.com

Small Business Saturday

Holidays In Manayunk

Manayunk On Ice

Sure, it’s a national occasion sponsored by a corporate giant (American Express), but Small Business Saturday was practically tailor-made for Manayunk, a neighborhood where 95 percent of the shops, galleries, restaurants, bakeries, cafés and various other businesses are independentlyowned and -operated. On Saturday November 24, they’ll be offering discounts and specials to thank us for the loyalty. Sort of feels like it should be the other way around.

It’s not enough anymore for Santa to simply make an appearance at the start of the holiday season. He’s graded now on style too, his level of authenticity as dependent upon the grandness of his entry as the bushiness of his snow-white beard. The holidays will officially launch in Manayunk on Satutrday December 1, when Santa will take a seat atop an ice throne carved by the renowned sculptor, Peter Slavin. That’s about as grand as it gets. In fact, it kind of puts the Macy’s Santa, the standard for Santas, to shame. On Saturday, December 1 there will be caroling and a tree-lighting ceremony in Canal View Park that evening, but let’s not lose sight of Santa in the hand-carved ice throne. Parents, no one would think less of you for slipping into line for a photo. You may sit on Santa’s lap, too. Just don’t cut ahead of the kids.

Come February, one of the last things you’ll want to see is more ice. But then, you’ve likely never seen it as it’ll be featured throughout the annual Manayunk On Ice weekend, February 8-10. For starters, there will be an “ice bonfire” on the opening night. (Seeing is believing.) That’ll give way to an ice sculpture tour, carving competitions and sculptures-in-the-making just about everywhere along Main Street. Not only will it make for a surreal-verging-on-magical scene, none of it will be a road hazard.

First Friday

When First Friday finally arrived in Manayunk a year ago, it felt overdue. With the intimate shops and galleries along Main Street, and the ones just off the beaten path, along Shurs and Green lanes and some of the other quaint side streets, it’s the kind of downtown that’s begging to be discovered during a casual stroll, display window by display window. And when there are cozy restaurants to duck into at frequent intervals for a quick cocktail and a nosh, four hours can fly by rapidly. Follow the flags Nov. 2, Dec. 7, January 4 and Feb. 1, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Valentine’s Day Guys, we make Valentine’s

Day so much harder on ourselves—and, thus, our better halves—than it needs to be, especially when we have the kind of resources available in Manayunk at our disposal. Keep it simple: Buy a piece of jewelry. Shiny is good, sparkly is better. Gary Mann, Martin Pulli, Bendi, Orbit Art and Latitudes and Longitudes are all safe bets. Then, make a dinner reservation at one of the dimly-lit, well-appointed restaurants in town. In fact, do that now. You’re not the only one reading this.

The Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival September 29

Philly food trucks, gourmet food vendors as well as farmers markets, lined Main Street for the 1st annual Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival. Vendors and restaurants served up apple-inspired dishes while retailers decorated their storefronts in the apple theme. If you couldn’t make it by this year, join us on the last weekend of September in 2013.

Festival visitors got the chance to get their picture in front of our Manayunk.com sign with a giant fork! Did you make the cut?

Live.EXPERT ADVICE

Holiday Party Essentials They’ll come for the food and drink, but they’ll remember the unique touches. With a client list that includes the University of Pennsylvania, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the American Heart Association, Manayunk floral and event designer John Kevin Gallagher (www.jkgfloral.com) has staged some of the most spectacular bashes Philadelphia’s seen in the last 25 years. Here, he shares a few essentials that he’ll be planning his own holiday party around. (Which means that yours shouldn’t be without them either.)

Crystal Decanter | $55 JKG Design Studio at The Mill, 123 Leverington Avenue Is it a luxury item? Yes. But if you’re planning to serve top-shelf liquor, you may as well go for the full effect.

SALONG Vases | $5 to $10 A stylish tablesetting begins with an understated element like these white glass vases.

Bar Novelties | $5 to $36 The Little Apple, 4353 Main Street Cocktail shaker, $36; Toasted: The Civilized (And Uncivilized) Guide to Raising Your Glass, $18; three-ounce flask, $24; Save Water, Drink Beer bottle opener, $18; whiskey and bourbon rocks glasses, $12. Your guests are going to congregate around the bar, so furnish them with lots of conversation starters. 10

Opening a restaurant a few blocks from its much-loved predecessor shouldn’t have been so hard. But, as it turns out, the food may be the only straightforward part of the process. By Moon Krapugthong

As a chef and restaurateur without deep pockets or a Rolodex of angel investors, I climbed a lot of mountains to get Yanako off the ground. But, if there’s one thing that being a woman and a minority have taught me, it’s this: A strong will will carry you where you want to go. As it happens, I just wanted to go down Main Street. It also helps to have a supportive husband and business partner and a staff who view your vision as their own. I’m very grateful for mine, because their roles were as large as my own in opening my third restaurant, Yanako (4255 Main Street, Manayunk), this summer after a year of delays. Yanako proved to be my greatest professional challenge. But seeing it through to fruition also made it my proudest 20

achievement. There were real-estate related snafus and budget woes aplenty. During the especially trying moments, that will I mentioned, felt more like a stubbornness. We pushed through in those particular hours if only because I’m not someone who doesn’t follow through. We started promoting Yanako a yearand-a-half beforehand. To not open was never a consideration. How to open was, constantly. When we were forced to cut back, my team delivered solutions that weren’t only practical, they were insightful and adventurous. At turns, they seemed to have a beat on what I wanted even KRAPUGTHONG WITH AGUS LUKITO, more than I did myself. It was a risk— what restaurateur in his right mind YANAKO’S HEAD CHEF.

would entrust a venture in three green architecture grads? But, in retrospect, it was one of the best decisions I made along this long and winding way. The look and feel of Yanako is a better version of even what I envisioned: down-to-earth, but more minimalistic and polished. Crafted out of monkey pod wood harvested from acacia trees, the sushi bar is the centerpiece of the warm, organic, outdoorfeeling interior that’s meant to be reminiscent of typical Japanese courtyards. My Philadelphia University grads are also responsible for the “living wall,” which is fast becoming the restaurant’s central talking piece. Ultimately, I want the food, of course, to be what the buzz is all about. Our head chef, Agus Lukito, put his savory spin on the tried-and-true spicy tuna. But our sushi bar runs far deeper than that: live oysters, uni, scallops, Japanese red-eye snapper—the freshest fish in its purest form. Since the opening in July, I’ve been growing my own horizons. Japanese and Thai cuisines differ in subtlety and presentation. Thai cooking is spicy and aromatic, and it focuses on balancing sour, sweet, salty and bitter tastes. Japanese dishes are humbler. They’re made by combining rice or noodles with soup, adding fish, meat, vegetables or tofu, and flavoring it with dashi, miso and soy sauce. There’s a simple beauty, as I’m learning, to authentic Japanese meals—and desserts.

Let’s start with the gourmet cheese, meat and olive platter from Angelo & Josephine’s Gourmet Foods Market (www. angeloandjosephines.com), a third-generation-owned shop that’s held down the same location in Manayunk since the twenties. The platter is a wonderland of traditional Italian appetizers: pepperoni and sopressata, lightly-smoked sharp provolone, aged cheddar, an olive blend, roasted red peppers and marinated artichokes and mushrooms. On to the dinner itself. When your guests sit down around the table, make sure there are oreganata within easy reach. It’s a thinly-rolled dough filled with Italian spices, oils and broccoli, spinach or pepperoni. Marchiano’s Bakery (www.marchianos bakery.com) makes an incomparable version of the Philadelphia specialty. Through the fall and winter, there’s typically a line of patient, loyal customers hanging out the door, which, on occasion, has included the random Eagle and Phillies player. Frank Sinatra and The Temptations were customers, too, once upon a time. The McCann Farm (www.themccannsfarm.com) is one of our go-tos for seasonal vegetables. It’s located in Monroeville, NJ, about a half-hour away from Manayunk, but it stages the Gorgas Park Farmers Market, located on Ridge Avenue at Acorn Street, Fridays, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Shop there for your sweet potatoes, kale, apples and, especially, its much-loved apple butter. As for the featured attraction—the turkey, of course—Meadow Run Farm (www.sweetstemfarm.com), in Lititz, PA, is becoming a household name among discerning city dwellers who prefer their pork, lamb and beef humanely-raised and pasture-fed thanks to its year-round buying club, which delivers monthly to four locations across Philadelphia. It also does free-range turkey. Just make sure you get your order in on time. Once you reach dessert, you and your guests may be on the verge of slipping into a coma, but don’t start skimping now. A bold coffee is in order. Hit Volo Coffeehouse (www.volocoffee house.com), which serves beans by the Philadelphia-founded La Colombe Torrefaction, and grab a bag or two of the Corsica blend. It delivers an uncommonly full-bodied flavor and a long-lasting coffee finish. And, to go with that caffeine rush: cupcakes from Sweet Elizabeth’s Cakes (www.sweetelizabethscakes.com). Yeah, it’s a little unconventional, but no one will dare bark a complaint. Go with the pumpkin. They’re topped with cinnamon buttercream and candied pecans. If you need a safety net, pick up a classic apple pie too. Or the pumpkin pie, which is made with toasted meringue. Come to think of it, better to play it safe and go with cupcakes and pies. The true beauty of sourcing your Holiday dinner completely from neighborhood shops and markets is that you’re supporting the independent businesses that help keep Manayunk colorful and vibrant. Full stomach, clear conscience. Enjoy your holidays. Elyse Castillo is the owner of the Manayunk-based Chew Philly Food Tours (www.phillyfoodtours.com). Turning Up the Heat

Before you half-heartedly drag yourself back to the gym in January, strike a pose. By Schuyler Ferguson

!

!

When fall’s nip in the air becomes winter’s bite, we tend to retreat inside, slow down, eat more and, in turn, bulk up. The holidays only compound matters. With lots of opportunity to eat, drink and be merry, there’s bound to be one sour hangover, literally and figuratively, come January. Naturally, the question then becomes, how do you reverse the trend? While the masses swarm the health clubs to renew their memberships, consider an emerging, alternative practice that’s capable of quickly undoing the holiday excess: Bikram Yoga. Weight loss, though, is really just one aspect of its potential. Bikram Yoga revitalizes the entire mind-body complex by reducing stress and lethargy and boosting energy and wakefulness. As you learn to steady your mind, concentrate and meditate, the most significant benefits begin to manifest: a greater success in your undertakings, a deeper satisfaction in your overall life and a more consistent mental peace. But, as yoga students of all kinds are aware, it’s difficult to achieve such balance while plagued by physical concerns. So, Bikram Yoga begins with bringing the body 26

manayunk.com | Winter 2012

into a harmonious state in order to build a firm foundation. Shedding weight is part of that process, and it’s done in several ways. First, it heats up muscles, enabling them to burn fat faster and, ultimately, more efficiently. Bikram Yoga is typically practiced in a studio heated to 105 degrees, making it possible to burn upward of 700 calories in a single class. The sweating also helps dispense excess water weight, which diminishes puffy skin. Even more importantly, it’ll remove toxins from the bloodstream. On a deeper level, Bikram Yoga postures harmonize the major organs and gland systems. Many, such as Supta Pawan Muktasana (Wind Removing) and Ardha Kurmasana (Half-Tortoise), deeply massage and stretch the intestines, which produces serotonin that, in turn, promotes peristalsis and nutrient absorption. We’re all familiar with the expression, “You are what you eat.” In truth, you are what you can assimilate. You’ll be able to eat less food and do more with it because your body will no longer be wasting bio-energy, or prana, trying to digest so many calories. Other postures eliminate stagnation in the glands and the lymphatic system. Sluggishness in the latter is behind a host of weight-related disorders. The backward-bending Ardha Chandrasana (Half-Moon) and Dhanruasana (Bow) massage and stimulate the pancreas, feeding it fresh blood. The action is supported by the regulation of the thyroid and parathyroid glands through postures such as Dandayamana Bidhaktapada Paschimottanasana (Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee) and Sasangasana (Rabbit). Together, the pancreas and thyroid and parathyroid glands control metabolic function and hormones, including insulin and glucagon. In nourishing them, digestion becomes more efficient, the blood sugar stabilizes and overall energy increases. (Counterclockwise from the top) Schuyler and Ammie Ferguson and Suzanne Musetto are the owners of Bikram Yoga Manayunk (www. facebook.com/BikramYogaManayunk).
