My Manayunk Home
Tips & Ideas on designing Manayunk-inspired spaces this season
By Caitlin Marsilii • Photos By The Video Content Factory
As the winter sets in, we tend to hibernate indoors a lot more. While the days get shorter and colder, we find comfort in coziness. That goes for habits, outfits, and food, just as much as it goes for cozying up our Manayunk homes…or apartments. Sprucing up your home as the seasons change is not only fun, but it ushers in new energy, relieves the sense of stagnancy, and focuses in on the present. So, as the winter kicks in, we here on Main Street want to help you decorate and stylize Manayunk-inspired spaces to fully embody the season shift.

Serving Business Family Style
By Carla Ferro • Photos Provided by JPG Photography and Local Businesses
Opening and running a business takes a great deal of passion, determination, and hard work. Then put family at the heart of it all, adding another layer of pride and heart to the overall mission. Manayunk is home to a few of these unique, family-owned businesses, each with their own remarkable story.
Husband, Wife, & Daughters
Marchiano’s Bakery
Marchiano’s Bakery was started by Frank and Kathy Marchiano along with Frank’s mother, Nunziata. They started making bread out of the basement of their home in Manayunk. They began doing so because Frank had injured himself working and had to find a way to support their family. Nunziata’s response after the injury was, “Don’t worry. We’ll make bread, Frankie.” People would line up outside of their house to purchase the bread that’s recipe had been passed down from generations past.
Just like that, Marchiano’s was born. They sold their product out of their home for several years until they opened their own storefront, which is the same storefront you see on Umbria Street today. A Manayunk favorite, Marchiano’s has been a part of the community for the past 42+ years selling their specialty breads, tomato pie, and oreganata. Frank and his family have maintained their business all this time with family, friendship, and love being the cornerstones.
Frank Marchiano unfortunately passed away in March of 2024. His legacy will live on through the business he created with his family. His two daughters, Daneen Marchiano and Christina Marchiano Stafford, along with his wife, Kathy, aim to continue his old school mentality and loyalty to his customers. “There’s not many places that you can still shop at that are old school. You come in and forget cash- okay, send us a check. You’re short cash- okay, bring it next time,” Daneen explains. The two sisters have been working in the bakery their whole lives, and now manage the store. “Down to his last breath, my dad spoke about his customers and business. He made a name, with our mom, on being good to the community, and in turn, people shopped here and loved him. He built the business by being a real person.”
As so much has changed in Manayunk over the last 50 years, Marchiano’s has seen gener ation after generation of loyal customers. A great grandfather who shopped here 40 years ago now has great grandchildren coming to the bakery and keeping the tradition alive. “All of our customers become family,” Daneen and Christina agree.
When asked what to expect from their business in the future, the sisters explained that they hope to put into action plans that their father made long before his illness. “We want to maintain our product and keep our brand tasting the same as it always has. And maybe you’ll be able to find [their breads] far beyond the Philadelphia area.”
Mother & Daughter Boostin’ Bowls
Jenna Cardello opened Boostin’ Bowls in 2017 with the help of her mother, Kathy Cardello. After quitting her full-time job because it wasn’t making her happy, Jenna contemplated what her next move was. “I’ll just hire myself,” she decided.
She had the idea to bring a healthy food option to Manayunk. Acai bowls were something more popular on the West Coast at the time, but weren’t as common here yet. When they opened, the customers here in Philadelphia weren’t familiar with the product and often didn’t know how to pronounce it. Getting customers in the door was a huge challenge that the store faced at first.
However, the customers started showing up, asking questions, and loved these healthy bowls and smoothies. Jenna’s new business venture was underway with her mother helping through every step.
“My mom was a huge part of the opening of the store.” Jenna was only 24 years old at the time, and didn’t know how to get a loan or run a business. Kathy helped her daughter figure out how to build the store, make and sell the product, and even worked in the store on weekends for the first year.
Another challenge the business faced, along with so many other small businesses, was the pandemic and the aftermath of it. Being a fairly new store at the time, Boostin’ Bowls had to adjust their prices, and figure out how to navigate shortages of supplies and labor. “It has made us stronger and taught us how to build our business bigger,” Jenna reflects.
Boostin’ Bowls just celebrated their 7th anniversary this September. “It was very cool seeing a line out the door with customers waiting to get these bowls that I created.” The store has seen great success here in the Manayunk neighborhood. Even some local heroes, such as Jason Kelce, have stopped by for a taste! “We sell something that no one else in Manayunk sells, and we do it in a way that no one else in Philadelphia does.”
Father & Son Jake’s & Cooper’s Wine Bar and Wine Shop
The local wine bar and restaurant, Jake’s & Cooper’s, has had a longstanding home here in Manayunk. Motivated by wanting to work for himself, Bruce Cooper decided he wanted to open a restaurant in 1987. He had a vision for what he wanted to create, and was able to bring the vision to life.
37 years later, his business is still standing strong, having weathered through many different seasons of Main Street. In 2008, Bruce purchased the property next door, expanding the restaurant significantly. The interior of the restaurant has also been refurbished countless times over the years. Bruce explained that they went from more of a fine-dining restaurant to more casual, because that’s what the market was leaning towards. These changes and updates were all done to keep the business alive and relevant.
The pandemic brought on new challenges and changes. Bruce’s son, Bruce Joseph Cooper Jr., started taking on a bigger role at the restaurant, managing the store’s day-to-day operations. To adapt to the covid lockdown, they started selling wine like a store-front, which remains a part of their business today. Jake’s & Cooper’s is currently the only place in downtown Manayunk where you can purchase a bottle of wine to-go. One step further, these wines are special order products that can’t always be found at a grocery or liquor store. The father and son duo are proud of their consistent and reasonable wine prices.
Bruce Jr. reflects that he loves being a part of this community, and working here has allowed him to come out of his shell. He is the friendly face greeting you at the front door of the restaurant. “Manayunk has always been home to me. I know everyone here. I’m Uncle Bruce to all the dogs in town!”
From Bruce Sr.’s perspective, working with his son has been a very satisfying and fun experience. “It’s rewarding from a father’s point of view. I’ve been able to teach him how to manage. We’ve learned from each other. The trust- there’s no comparison.”
Father & Daughter Manayunk Brewing Company
Manayunk Brewing Company originally opened in 1996 under other owners who also ran the farmer’s market on the upper floor of the building. They had a vision to add a brewery downstairs. Mike Rose, who is now the primary owner, was brought on as a General Manager the first year it opened. He had been working in Manayunk for some years prior at other restaurants and business ventures.
When the brewpub opened, they only had a liquor license to sell the beer that they brewed. “We had a problem in the beginning. People would come in and say ‘I’m not a beer drinker.’ [We] lobbied to get brewpubs to be allowed to sell liquor drinks,” Mike said, and the business grew from there. They started selling liquor and added a few outside beers onto their menu to accomodate to their customers.
Mike’s daughter, Paris Rose-Antonogiannis, is the Sales & Banquet Manager at Manayunk Brewing, and is his right hand. They do everything they can to create a family atmosphere at work, and treat each staff member with the same respect they want to be treated with. “They’re not just a number. We care about what happens to our team here,” Paris said, which they believe has contributed to a very high staff retention.
Even the next generation of the family is getting involved. Mike’s granddaughter hosts at the restaurant, and his grandson is a busser. “Family or not family- you’re a worker, I’m a worker. You come in, it’s a job- do your job.” He believes they’re proud to work here and be a part of the family business.
Family-run for the Roses also means they have the luxury of making changes where they see fit. They have a brand-new menu that was rolled out this fall and are aiming to do more and more events in the years to come. They are in the process of renovating a second event space in their building, which will be called the Bridgeview Room. They host a jazz jam session on Tuesdays, a comedy show on Wednesdays, and trivia on Fridays. They also have different kinds of sampling events that come through, such as wine, bourbon, and beer tastings. Their mentality is to try different things to draw people in their front door. They have overcome many challenges over the last 28 years, including countless floods and the pandemic. Manayunk Brewing resiliently remains a staple of the Manayunk community.

Explore the Manayunk Welcome Center
By Brandon Pagano
The Manayunk Development Corporation and the Manayunk Special Services District are proud to share that the Manayunk Welcome Center is officially open to the public. We encourage all residents and visitors to swing by and appreciate the work that’s been put into creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for everyone here in Manayunk.
We all want this exciting new space to be a resource for the community. A place people can stop in to ask about local events, community resources, recreation, restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses. We have a community pinboard for people to come and display promotions. Georgie Gould, President of The Roxborough Manayunk Wissahickon Historical Society provided an insightful history wall of posters with vintage photos and key facts representing Manayunk’s rich history through multiple generations. There’s a great selection of Manayunk merch, such as clothing so you can rep the town with pride, drinkware for those long walks on the trails or that morning coffee, magnets and stickers to decorate, umbrellas and ponchos for those rainy days, as well as other fun items (some printed right here by Manayunk businesses!). We strongly encourage the community to come in to ask any questions - and voice their suggestions for improvement of the Welcome Center right at the front desk. This will help the space to grow and bend to the needs of the people we’re welcoming in.
We can be found on the ground floor of the brand new MDC headquarters. MDC moved from Main Street to this new location for a lot of reasons - but a major one was freeing up prime real estate for the potential entrepreneurs trying to get their footing in Manayunk. Our new location at 106 Grape Street is about as close to Main Street as you can get, leaving us just as accessible as we were before. The Welcome Center is open seven days a week from 10am to 6pm.
Whether you’re someone who just moved to Manayunk, have lived here your whole life, bought a house here, rent here, visit here- whatever the situation- we want to say Welcome. And our best way to do that first involves a visit to the Manayunk Welcome Center. Come in to chat, read about the history, shop for a gift for a friend or for yourself, and grab a free magazine to stay updated on everything happening in the neighborhood. Stay safe and we’ll see you soon!

Raising Kids in Manayunk
How Philly’s “Small Town” Adapts to Families Settling Down in the Neighborhood
By Brenda Hillegas • Photos By The Video Content Factory
When my now six-year-old was just a couple weeks old, he attended his first of many events in Manayunk. It was a pet blessing ceremony in early fall at Pretzel Park, which features newer playground equipment, a seasonal farmer’s market, an annual Parks-On-Tap stop, Halloween costume parade, and even a weiner dog competition depending on the time of the year. If you walk down onto Main Street, there’s no shortage of even more activities, shops and services, and plenty of restaurants. A quick lesson in the neighborhood’s cultural history can be found in the new welcome center and headquarters for the Manayunk Development Corporation, which officially opened this summer. Step inside for displays on the development of the neighborhood, notable people, purchase Manayunk swag or inquire about renting the building’s community space. But, if you’re there, then you probably already know that our neighborhood, with a multitude of independently owned businesses and steps away from the walking and biking trails of the Schuylkill River, is full of small-town charm and plenty of outdoor space while still being a part of Philadelphia. If you’re reluctant to head to the ‘burbs and want to raise your family in the city, Manayunk is the right place. When talking to parents and business owners here, everyone
mentioned similar plus points: Manayunk is ‘best of both worlds’, it’s a vibrant, charming, tight community, you actually know your neighbors, many lived here during or after college and decided to stay when it became time to grow their own families. Want to know more about this gem in a big city of neighborhoods and what makes it so appealing to young families? Let’s dive into it.
“It’s my favorite place in Philly. It is such an amazing community, easy access to both the city and the suburbs, and it's a young demographic that I enjoy living in. I knew this was the perfect place for my shop,” says Mallory Minor who owns Minor Details, specializing in unique gifts and customizable items. “I knew filling the niche of being a super affordable, trendy store would be perfect for the younger college students that come through Manayunk each year, but also the young twenty and thirty-somethings in their professional lives starting their families.”
“Manayunk is a wonderful place to raise children! Word must be getting out, because there is a growing community of young families that make use of our beautiful parks and wonderful public schools. Walkability is fantastic, and kids get an opportunity to know so many folks when we're traveling by foot,” says Chris Maguire, who owns Tubby Robot
Ice Cream Factory with his wife, Kelly. He notes that being able to add another oneof-a-kind business to Main Street is a privilege. “I love catching up with old neighbors and meeting new ones just about every day.”
As more families move in and begin to create their own traditions, businesses have been adding kid-friendly activities and menu items into their daily operations. “I like to focus my inventory on Philly sports, Philly-related items, and Taylor Swift, so you can always find those items available in all kid sizes. I’m happy to help out a customer with a custom order as well. I've done children’s birthday parties, t-shirts, gifts for partygoers, or anything you could possibly need help with,” Mallory adds.
Danielle Du Plooy, who opened The Brass Tap with her husband Izak last year, fell in love with Manayunk when she moved to Philly over 10 years ago. “With its vibrant nightlife and frequent events, my husband and I knew that Brass Tap would be a fantastic addition. The community has been incredibly welcoming.”
Their bar and restaurant is steps from Neighbors Park, where you’ll find a playground, basketball courts and a splash pad. The location is perfect for playdates followed by lunch. The Brass Tap welcomes families and understands the need for hardworking parents to have a space to spend quality time together. They hosted Easter egg painting and a bunny brunch last spring, provided painting supplies for a bring your own pumpkin event in October, and have Christmas activities planned soon. The bar’s private event space is ideal for kid's birthday parties and there is no charge to rent it.
“The abundance of family-friendly activities in the area is something we love,” says Du Plooy. “Since welcoming our baby boy last year, we’ve enjoyed several local festivals. As he continues to grow up, we’re excited to engage in more local classes and events!”
Manayunk’s annual celebrations are looked forward to by the community and there’s something to do outside in all seasons. The StrEAT Food Truck Festival lines Main Street with food trucks from the surrounding areas, and the two-day Manayunk Arts Festival just celebrated 35 years of showcasing 300+ local and nationally known artists and crafters. At Out & About in Manayunk, LGBTQ+ artists, performers, organizations, and entertainment provide an experience that’s safe and welcoming for everyone. Kids can trick-or-treat at shops after showing off their costumes in Pretzel Park (where farmers market vendors also hand out candy), families bundle up to enjoy holiday light displays in December, and ice sculptures outside of many of the businesses during Founder’s Philly Freeze Out,. There’s also RoxYunk PorchFest, a community-led day that encourages people to wander around and listen to music set up on porches and driveways across the neighborhood- passionately organized with weekly meetings leading up to performance date.
One aspect of Manayunk living that seems to appeal to families is the fact that gathering spaces aren’t always specifically designed for kids, but still they are very welcoming. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s seasonal pop-up beer garden is ideal for date nights or getting together with friends, but if children have to tag along, there’s no need to
stress about entertaining them.
“[We have] a dedicated game room with foosball, basketball, Jenga, Connect Four and more, which anyone can enjoy anytime they join us,” says PHS’s Associate Director of Activation, Cristina Tessaro. “We also have PHS programs such as plant swaps, botanical water coloring, pressed flower workshops and more, which are all family friendly.”
Cristina believes everyone should enjoy their gardens and there should be no age limit on enjoying beautiful green spaces. PHS partners with Royal Restaurant Group which is known for restaurants like Khyber Pass Pub, Royal Tavern, and Cantina Los Caballitos. All of these spots are family-friendly and the Pop Up Gardens (an additional location on South Street) are no different, says Tessaro. “Our food menu offers a selection of kids items, and many of our regular menu items are chosen with everyone’s tastes in mind.”
“Our menu is, essentially, one giant kids menu,” says Chris Barnes, owner of Lucky’s Last Chance, where the menu is predominantly burgers, mac and cheese, hot dogs and grilled cheese. “Our goal was always to be a place where so many walks of life could come together over the love of simple comfort food, good music, and a cozy environment.
“So many Main Street independent business owners have kids, and so many have chosen to raise their kids here. Coupled with the growing number of young families who have set roots throughout the area and all of the wonderful programming for kids, it’s a no-brainer to see Manayunk as the perfect family friendly destination.”
Twisted Gingers Brewery owner Mark Mayer grew up in the restaurant world,
watching his dad run a restaurant in New Jersey. He loved the idea of a neighborhood space and creating a family atmosphere in his brewery was also an obvious choice.
“There was a section of my dad's restaurant that we called bar booths. Whenever my mom would bring us over there while my dad had to work, we would sit and have dinner. My dad would be able to take care of stuff, but he’d be able to actually sit down and have dinner. That was really important to him. And there were so many times where he controlled the language in the bar,” Mark explains. “He would get up and say ‘you can't talk like that here. It's a family restaurant.’ And that always stuck with me.”
If Mark’s customers start cursing when children are nearby, he is quick to tell them to be respectful of the families enjoying their dinner.
Many of Mark’s friends lived in Manayunk after college, but his first job was in Connecticut so he commuted here often to socialize. “A lot of my friends who lived in this neighborhood all met up right after [COVID] restrictions were lifted,” he says. “I remember the kids were all sitting at the table saying the pizza is really good. It was such a good feeling because I was like, you guys are bringing your kids to a bar. It will always be that way because that's how I was brought up. [Allowing kids] was always going to be a part of it.”
People who lived here during college or just after graduating are finding that even with all of the late night bars and young professional vibes, Manayunk provides opportunities for families to have fun and make memories together.
“I believe ice cream has a nearly universal appeal, and that is especially true for kids,”
says Chris Maguire. “We built our Wall-O-Vision system in the hopes of exposing a new generation to classic arcade games. It's amazing to see kids connect with games that were released decades before they were born.”
“I realized how important it was to have a restaurant that is kid friendly, being a father myself,” says Tim Spinner, owner of Taqueria Amor. “We want to have something for everyone and it’s important that kids have food they love to eat too!”
Taqueria Amor’s “Little Amigos” menu offers standards, as well as mac and cheese tacos and peanut butter, jelly and fluff quesadillas. Plus themed pop-ups are appealing to everyone. In October, they transformed into a Beetlejuice-theme. Previous themes included Taylor Swift, Stranger Things, Barbie, and Wrestlemania
Kristy Martin, BSN, owner of The Nice Needle Nurse Aesthetic Medical Spa, decided to open her business on Main Street in Manayunk because she always loved the street. Now that she has a family of her own, staying was an easy “yes”.
“I moved to Manayunk at 21 and at almost 40 have been here ever since. Most of the businesses are small and family owned, which makes the relationships between owners and customers personal and genuine, fostering a sense of connection and trust. I love the people here, most of my patients refer their family members in and after a while, you get to know what feels like everyone.”
Kristy believes that living here with her family does offer the best of both worlds- “It’s a unique town that's urban in its energy, with the convenience of city living, but surrounded
by lush green spaces, parks, and nature trails. We love that our son has a place with children his age to play with at the local playgrounds, and he also has the opportunity to spot turtles and wildlife on nature walks and bike rides in Wissahickon Valley Park.”
Her son attends Springside Chestnut Hill Academy where he enjoys “naturescapes”, something she describes as recess, but with frogs and trees mixed in. He also participates in after care and enrichment programs, available from 3:30-6pm which can include taking classes like chess, yoga, gardening and art.
“Both of our kids go to Dobson and the staff there is excellent at pushing them academically while fostering an environment where it's expected to be kind,” says Chris Maguire. “The extra care services offered by North Light Community Center are staffed by neighbors and feel like a second home.”
“We provide after care, activities, and homework help for Shawmont, Dobson, Cook-Wissahickon and Greenwoods Charter Schools until 6pm, including van transportation from the schools,” says Rhiannon Smith, Director of Development at North Light. “We also provide an eight-week summer camp full of engaging activities for children 4-12 years old. Childcare subsidies and financial aid are available.”
There are an abundance of classes, after school activities and camps in our neighborhood. “We produce a Theatre for Young Audiences in March that rehearses from January to March. Everyone in the community is welcome to audition,” says Kelly Orenshaw, facility supervisor of Venice Island Performing Arts Center
“Venice Island is a fantastic spot for kids programming,” says Molly Hebert-Wilson who runs Ms. Molly’s music classes on site. “There’s plenty of space, indoor and outdoor options, it’s easily walkable just off of Main Street, and plenty of parking. The staff are really invested in developing fun, educational, and accessible kids programming.”
Along with early childhood music classes and a spray ground just outside that’s open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Venice Island presents Short Theatre Festival in May, and plans to add more produced shows in June and November.
Born Creative Art Studio hosts parties and classes, as well as a summer camp for ages six and up. Evening “Mixed Media” classes are ideal for ages six-12 as they explore and create various art forms. The studio’s summer camps change themes weekly (you can choose which weeks to attend). Manayunk Arts Center offers youth classes, workshops, and homeschool classes. Elite Sports Factory offers summer camp, youth sports classes with options ranging from ages 6 to 18, and even a drop in Ninja Fun Zone, parents night out events, and day camps when school is out. Venice Island is home to Philadelphia’s Parks and Recreation six week camp for ages 10-18. Though they don’t currently have a dedicated program for older kids/teenagers, Orenshaw would be open to start one if people are interested- another opportunity for the community to come together.
“North Light’s Teen Services encompasses an Out-of-School Time program that provides college and career preparation, tutoring, workshops, summer internships and
more,” says Rhiannon.
Teenagers who have a bit more independence and can venture out with their friends can easily get around on foot to coffee shops, bubble tea, and ice cream spots. Multiple SEPTA bus routes and a train stop right on Main Street also make it easy to navigate around the neighborhood and into Center City.
“I think Manayunk does an incredible job of balancing nightlife and being really welcoming to families. That shows in the level of excitement people have about getting out and doing fun activities,” says Molly.
“Being part of such a community is great because it allows you to build strong relationships, collaborate with others, and be more directly involved in shaping the local economy. It also creates opportunities for mutual support and innovation, as small business owners,” says Kristy.
“It’s transitioned over the years from more of a college town, but now there are so many young professionals who have started families and call Manayunk home,” says Tim.
Raising children in this pocket of Philadelphia, like Chris Barnes suggests, should be a no-brainer! There’s no shortage of other families to bond with, people to greet, nature to explore, activities to participate in and community spirit! For anyone seeking a nurturing environment with space for personal and communal growth, Manayunk is a solid choice for families ready to plant their roots.
Building Community Through Fitness
How Local Gyms Connect with their Manayunk Neighbors

What if stopping by your local gym meant much more than getting a workout in? The Manayunk neighborhood is home to a plethora of fitness-based businesses all here to help you not only look good but FEEL good. Gym culture can be intimidating for some. These eleven local gyms and wellness-based businesses meet you where you are at with your fitness - and help you have fun with it! Whether it’s stopping by a happy hour after a workout with your gym buddies, or simply surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals, these small businesses shine a new light on the fitness world with a focus on building community amongst their members and also with the Manayunk Neighborhood.
Heyday Athletic Sports. Friendship. Cheers!
Whether you are looking to make new friends, or your friend group is looking for a new activity to do together - HeyDay is perfect for you. HeyDay Athletic consists of a range of organized adult sports leagues throughout the tri-state area - their home base is right here on the border of Manayunk and Roxborough. The organization has existed since 1993 with a few different faces. In 2020 the name HeyDay Athletic was born when six different clubs all joined together with the same mission - fun, sports, and community. Business partner Tim Horan, a member since 1998, was so passionate about the organization that he eventually joined the team.
"But it’s not work if you're having fun!" he laughs. “Every type of organized sport you would have done in your youth — we do the same thing, but for adults.”
Their leagues range from games like cornhole and giant beer pong to lacrosse, basketball, and so much more. You can join a league as an individual and be placed in a group of friendly
new faces, or create your own team and sign up together. Either way - everyone is there to have a good time and engage in some friendly sport.
“We want our folks to play ball for an hour and then go socialize,” Tim said, “Honestly… a lot of participants care more about the socializing afterward than the game itself.” Each league in the organization has a bar or restaurant associated with it. Team members can head to bars like J.D. McGillicuddy’s and Fat Lady Brewing after their games and receive deals on appetizers and drinks. Manayunk’s leagues include cornhole and volleyball, and soccer, which shift from outdoor settings in summer to indoor venues at local businesses in colder months.
“There are a variety of ways we give back to the community, either through the leagues or through general business support,” HeyDay’s Chief Admin Officer Brian Wagner said. “We integrate with the community as much as possible.”
HeyDay is all about reuniting adults with sports in a fun and social way. “We are not what many would describe as really competitive — what we really look for is the interaction of it,” Tim said. He has witnessed long-lasting friendships, marriages, and even babies have come from relationships started in their leagues. One couple even got custom black and white HeyDay t-shirts on!
Beyond the weekly league games and matches, HeyDay offers other events such as seasonal tournaments, themed bar crawls, and focused fitness events.
GoalsFit Invigorating. Fun. Social.
GoalsFit has been weaving the running community and camaraderie together for sixteen years. Business owner, Kasey Manwaring, has been a part of the Manayunk community even before then, opening her business following her graduation from a local university. Kasey ensures you will feel her motto ‘making fitness fun’ in her personal training sessions, boot
camps, running programs, and more. If you are an early bird, you may have witnessed their morning running classes around your neighborhood. That is what makes them unique! Kasey spices up her classes with varying themes and by utilizing the outdoor public spaces Manayunk has to offer. Instead of your average run around the block - Kasey’s classes take you from mural to mural, park to park, and Manayunk staircase to staircase! In the winter, Goalsfit runs outside to look at the holiday lights decorating Main Street. All with support from Kasey and the other members along the way. The classes involve socializing just as much as fitness.
“With the classes being outdoors, they can chit chat during the classes,” Kasey said “A lot of socializing is going on throughout the classes.” Members support and encourage each other throughout their runs. “I like it when my class realizes someone hasn't been to class in a while — it is really such a community,” Kasey said.
In addition to the boot camp-style classes, GoalsFit offers training programs for upcoming races such as the Philadelphia Marathon and Half Marathons. Goalsfit will provide runners with coaching support, team motivation, weekly workouts, and long runs together. Whether you are a fast runner or a beginner, Kasey and the GoalsFit team are here to support you!
GoalsFit has exciting plans for the future as Kasey is on her journey to becoming a therapist. She plans to combine counseling with fitness. “The classes make people feel good physically, emotionally, mentally, and socially.” Witnessing this connection sparked her interest in returning to school. Being with other people, moving your body, and being outdoors are all elements GoalsFit uses to enhance your experience in your community.
in 2022. Tucked away at 4100 Main Street, Inspired Movement has its own tranquil and personalized take on community. Adrin offers everything from one-on-one sessions and duet classes, all using reformers and springboards.
“I know about their lives, and they know about mine,” she shares. “It’s not invasive; it’s supportive.” She knows life’s everyday stressors can take a toll on the body, and she’s here to help you feel your best through Pilates. With over 20 years of experience, Adrin insisted, “Pilates is what everyone should be doing!”
She has worked with clients with varying physical conditions - some people need care and pain relief, and some just want to work out. The reformer is supportive, you can get a workout while lying down, but it also challenges you. Pilates uses different muscles and works out parts of your body that are always engaged in other forms of fitness.
Her duet classes are particularly special, allowing clients to partner with friends or meet new faces. Many participants appreciate the connections developed during these sessions, as “people have a lot more in common than you think.” This sense of connection not only enhances their workout experience but also builds lasting friendships within the community.
Adrin plans to expand her offerings to include mat classes and workshops in collaboration with other local businesses, further strengthening the community bonds at Inspired Movement.
RowZone Manayunk Exhilarating. Social. Challenging.
Rowzone is a boutique exercise studio utilizing indoor rowing ergs and other fitness techniques to meet you where you are on your fitness journey. Current business owner Jennifer Lynn has been a passionate member of RowZone for over 10 years before acquiring the company. “At RowZone, we bend over backward to make sure everyone has a home,” Jennifer said. RowZone designed unique plans for each workout class of about 15 attendees. Regardless of your rowing experience, or lack of, there is no reason to feel intimidated when signing up for your first class at RowZone! “You have all these rowers in a row, and no one can see the metrics the erg provides but you,” Jennifer said. “It feels like you are going just as fast as everybody else.” The erg machines can also be adjusted for different accommodations - all ages, bodies, and abilities are welcome!
“We call it rowing, but you're not really on the water,” Jennifer said. The ergs are typically used for indoor classes, but RowZone will bring classes outside for special occasions and during Manayunk events. Now and then, RowZone even offers the opportunity for members to put their practice to work! They run group outings and take members out on the water for a day of community fun amongst the group. One of the instructors is a high school rowing coach and will coach the group throughout their outing. “We are really lucky to have a steady group of instructors. They are like family," Jennifer said. “These are people I will call up to do something with.” Though this team is there to coach you on your fitness journey, everyone is there to have fun too. RowZone has a strong companionship amongst their staff and gym members. “Everyone hangs out after class and they are chatty chatty chatty…. They don’t want to go home,” Jennifer laughed.
RowZone is now embedded in the same space as The Wall Cycling Studio, together they enhance the community even more.
Inclusivity. Community. Caring.
“Our biggest thing is that we are all about community,” business owner Vicki Dzurinko said. “We want to offer a place that is very inclusive and safe; all levels and all people are welcome.” Vicki joined The Wall as a member in 2013 and has been a part of the studio for over a decade, eventually acquiring the business. The Wall Cycling Studio not only energizes riders with its dynamic spin cycling classes but also provides a variety of hybrid classes blending different forms of low-impact exercises for a full-body workout in a short amount of time. The studio also takes pride in celebrating members' class milestones, creating a sense of achievement and community among participants. “We love the clients who come in and treat them like friends and family,” Vicki said. The Wall not only has a strong community inside its space, but it engages with the Manayunk neighborhood as much as possible too. The Wall partners with other local businesses, such as Herbal Zen, Bar Jawn, and Pet-Friendly Bakery, to collaborate on events both in and outside the studio. “Manayunk just has THAT feel,” Vicki adds. “There are a bunch of people running their businesses, all with a community focus.”
With RowZone existing in the same space, the two gyms often collaborate on blended classes where members switch from bikes to ergs. “One of the great things about partner ing with The Wall is their immense calendar,” Jennifer said. “It seems like every other day they are doing something charitable, and we like to piggyback off them.” This spirit of col laboration not only enhances the workout experience but also strengthens the community bond, proving fitness can be a powerful force for connection.

letes, and coaches, bringing people of all ages together through sports and teamwork. “Making the kids feel welcome is a huge part of youth sports training,” Russel said.
New in town is Emerge Fitness, located at 4143 Main Street. Owner, Emily Fobben, opened the gym’s doors in May 2024, creating a welcoming studio offering small group training specifically for women, alongside one-on-one personal training for everyone. With
Participants follow a strength training program tailored to their individual needs, making it perfect for both beginners and advanced athletes. “You are probably a lot stronger than you think,” Emily encourages, often pushing members to lift more than they usually do. “It’s really cool when women realize, ‘Oh, I can lift this!’”
Emily understands many shy away from fitness due to past experiences with high-impact classes. At Emerge, the program is low-impact with no burpees, yet remains high-ener-

Owned by Kelly Maguire, the gym offers innovative classes like Cirque-It Fitness, aerial straps, and trapeze training, catering to all fitness levels while promoting self-acceptance through its Body Positive Personal Training program.

Never Give Up Inclusive. Inspired. Persevering.
Tucked underneath the Cresson Street train tracks is Never Give Up Training LLC, founded by owner Ali Cook Jackson 12 years ago. NGU brings fitness to you in various ways through small group classes, private and semi-private training, endurance and multisport programming, and sport-specific training and nutrition plans.
“At NGU, we are not just a business, but rather a community and family,” Ali said. “We are here for you not only during your workouts but, more importantly, outside of these doors, and that is clear from the moment you walk in!” Ali has countless heartwarming stories about friends and couples who met at NGU - some who now have kids who train with Ali. They have even had clients love their gym environment so much, they become NGU instructors themselves.
“Manayunk has so much to offer, and our members truly take advantage of it. A fun fact about us is that 99% of our trainers live in the area.” The skilled trainers at NGU make classes accessible for different fitness levels, fostering a supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to push their limits, especially when it comes to lifting weights.
classes, from power yoga to vinyasa flow, providing options for every yogi’s preferred practice. In these classes, you may find yourself mat to mat with fellow classmates, all working together in a shared journey of self-improvement. “We take pride in fostering an environment where people come together, support one another, and create meaningful relationships both on and off the mat,” manager Ava Samuel said.
From the moment you walk in the door, you're greeted with warmth. Small talk often flows between everyone before and after class, further enhancing the sense of community that makes HotBox Yoga a beloved haven for its members. Some instructors give the class a moment for mat neighbors to give each some words or motions of encouragement.
HotBox offers other ways for the community to grow in their space with different class challenges, yoga teacher training, and occasional themed workshops about mindfulness. “The HotBox community is vibrant, strong, and constantly growing,” Ava said. “Every class
McKenzie Physical Therapy Move Better. Feel Better.
Chris McKenzie, the owner of McKenzie Physical Therapy, turned his passion for healing into a career after experiencing a sports-related injury himself. At his clinic, he takes a personal, hands-on approach, standing out from alternative PT facilities. Chris treats everyone from beginners to Olympians, including plenty of clients who hit the local gyms. “Healthcare is missing someone that listens and truly understands you,” Chris said.
He’s eager to team up with local businesses, providing training for gym instructors to empower them to assist members during classes. “Ultimately, we want to keep people in their gym,” he explains, delivering on-the-spot care that helps folks continue doing what they love. Whether it’s a new issue or an old injury making a comeback, Chris is here to help clients manage their pain so they can keep enjoying their favorite workouts.
McKenzie Physical Therapy is actively involved in the Manayunk community, often setting up stations at neighborhood events. Chris hopes to deepen these connections with local businesses, offering opportunities for them to bring their staff in for training and care.
New to MPT are free monthly workshops for the community, each focused on a different topic related to pain management and physical health. These workshops are designed to educate people on the root causes of their discomfort and how physical therapy can help, empowering them to take control of their well-being and stay active.
