These Pups Are Meant For Walkin’ Meet Manayunk’s Dog Walkers! By Colleen Savage
Sandy Zanetto Walk This Way, LLC Established 2001 www.walkthiswayllc.com sez@walkthiswayllc.com 215-760-3148 10
Why did you choose Manayunk for your business? I began the business in Center City because I lived there. When I moved to Manayunk, it was a no brainer to continue here. Manayunk is a very dog friendly place. There are lots of dog-people here and I saw a great need for our services. In Manayunk, you are always apt to run into another pup or friendly dog-person! Top 3 favorite dog breeds? Small, medium and large! Who is your favorite celebrity dog, real or cartoon? Is Scooby Doo too obvious? What is your favorite animal-centered nonprofit? Locally, we support PAWS. They do amazing work in the Philly area and are the city’s largest no-kill shelter. They operate two high-volume, low-cost clinics serving pet owners and rescue organizations that lack access to affordable basic veterinary care. We do several fundraising events a year and always

Take a walk down Main Street any afternoon and tell me what you see. The sites vary from day-to-day depending on the time of year and the weather, but one thing is always a constant: dogs. Manayunk loves their dogs! You are guaranteed to see a dog any time of day or year. Whether it’s a big dog, small dog, a dog dining al fresco, a dog holding down the fort at a local business, or a dog in the midst of a stroll, you are guaranteed to see one. However, what most folks don’t know is many of the dogs on walks aren’t with their owners, but with one of the many jaunty dog walkers of Manayunk. Recently, we spoke with four ladies who you’ll often see walking dogs around Manayunk and here is what they had to say:

customer service and offer the convenience of online scheduling.
How has dog walking affected your life outside of work? My awesome team at Walk This Way, Dara our office manager who keeps it all together, Meagan, Faith, Rebecca, Nicole, Rachel, Corrine, Sueann, Jessica and Amanda have all taught me what you can accomplish if you work together towards a common goal! Beyond this, I have learned that the unconditional love we get from our animals is a wonderful thing that works both ways.
What makes a great dog walker? Being fully present. When I’m walking dogs, I give them all of my attention. This includes putting my phone away, being aware of my surroundings and knowing the dog’s behavior nuances so I am ready for anything. Also, practicing pet safety is of the utmost importance when walking dogs. If you were a dog, what kind would you be? A Corgi. We have the same personality characteristics: Bold, Friendly, Outgoing, Playful, Protective, Tenacious. What’s your favorite dog-centered movie or TV show? 101 Dalmatians will always be one of my favorite movies. Why work with dogs? What draws you to them over other animals? Dogs have so much personality. They are very intuitive, smart animals. They offer great companionship and unconditional love. Who doesn’t love being greeted at the door everyday by tail wags and pure joy?!
Shannon Vottero Bark.Play.Love. Established 2012 www.barkplaylove.com info@barkplaylove.com 267-908-4935 What’s your favorite place to take dogs in Manayunk? I love walking along the Wissahickon Park for educational field trips and exercise with our dog clients. Main Street is also a great place to socialize at dog-friendly restaurants for dogs and people. What makes your service different from the others? What makes you unique? In the words of one of our clients: “We are a family owned business that really cares about the dogs.” If you had an elephant or giraffe and it needed walks, we would make it work for you! My partner and I grew up with dogs and have had them our entire lives. We worked with them in every capacity from breeding, raising them and training them. We are adaptable and flexible to meet our clients scheduling needs. We are licensed and insured members of Pet Sitters International and earned the Certified Professional Pet Sitter designation. We will be attending a national pet sitters conference to learn the best techniques from the top leaders in the pet industry. How many dogs do you walk in one day? We average about 30 dogs per day. We need more walkers because there are more dogs than walkers! What’s your favorite dog-centered movie or TV show? Marley and Me (But not the last 10 minutes!)

What is your favorite animal-centered nonprofit? Saved Me Inc. is a nonprofit organization that is focused on saving dogs & cats from shelters that are forced to euthanize due to limited amount of space. Why work with dogs? What draws you to them over other animals? Dogs have an incredible desire to learn and to please humans. They are phenomenal examples of unconditional love! I find it to be an amazing thing to witness and very humbling. What piece of advice would you give to all of your dog-owning clients? Exercise your dogs as often as possible and provide
14
boundaries for them! Walk them as often as your schedule permits, and make sure they know who is in charge (and it’s not them). This takes dedication and practice, but you will have well-behaved and happy dogs as a result and a happier home for it. What is your favorite dog product? The “Gentle Leader” or “Halti.” It goes around the dog’s snout and makes walking with more challenging pups so much easier! It controls the dog’s head movements, thus keeping them from pulling as much. Also, a simple water spray bottle. A few squirts can curb unwanted behavior! Who is your favorite celebrity dog, real or cartoon? Verdell from As Good As It Gets What is your favorite animal-centered nonprofit? ACCT Philly is the region’s largest animal care and control service provider, serving the City of Philadelphia by contract. ACCT Philly manages the city’s animal shelter facility in North Philadelphia handling nearly 28,000 animals annually, from dogs and cats to small animals, reptiles, birds and wildlife.

a valuable service and I certainly was not fulfilled. When I was laid off, the opportunity to give this a shot was right in front of me. After doing some soul searching, I decided to put my faith in the universe and said, “If this is what you want me to do, then the work will come.” I started very small, with just a Craigslist post and not much advertising. Slowly and with a lot of word-of-mouth referrals, my business began to grow. I am absolutely thrilled that my clients have placed their trust in me. I care deeply about my human and canine (feline and other) clients and am committed to providing the best service to them. Not a day goes by that I am not profoundly grateful for this opportunity...I always say, “I have the best job in the world!”

LIVE: FAITH IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Meet Me At Mishkan Shalom A look inside Manayunk’s progressive synagogue. By Gabrielle Kaplan-Mayer
I
f you glance at Mishkan Shalom from Shurs Lane, you might guess the former mill is now a high-end condominium or a set of artists’ studios. A closer look at the building reveals a sign featuring ancient Hebrew letters that spell out the synagogue’s name, Mishkan Shalom, which means “Sanctuary of Peace.” Founded in 1988, the Reconstructionist synagogue moved into its new home on Freeland Avenue in 2002. When members first considered purchasing a building, they made a commitment to find a property within city limits and Manayunk’s central location was the perfect spot. Now it’s often referred to as a “destination synagogue” with over 200+ households come to Manayunk from around the Greater Philadelphia area and surrounding suburbs. “Our congregation has a commitment to the welfare and flourishing of the City of Philadelphia,” explains Rabbi Shawn Zevit. “It is important for us to build ties to the place in which we meet, pray, celebrate and organize for tikkun olam (Hebrew for “repair of the world” or social justice). As the one Jewish entity in Manayunk and Roxborough, we are serious about our role in the community.” To that end, Mishkan Shalom staff and members have become integrated into the neighborhood through a number of initiatives. The congregation has collected donations for North Light Community Center’s food pantry. And to offer holiday shoppers and restaurant goers a taste of Mishkan, the congregation hosted a “Mishkan-on-Main Street” Hanukkah celebration in a storefront on Main Street this pase December. In fact, more Jewish people and interfaith families who live in the neighborhood are finding their way to Mishkan than ever before. “It has been great to be a part of a synagogue that is right here,” says Andrea Nunez, who with her husband Carlos and two young daughters joined the synagogue last year. “We spend so much of our time commut-
16
ing everywhere; it’s nice to have a local synagogue that we can walk to and enjoy.” Mishkan Shalom is dedicated to the repair of the world through prayer, study and acts of caring. The prayer services are inclusive and dynamic. Rabbi Zevit is an accomplished musician who brings the energy of his guitar and original compositions to weekly Sabbath services held on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. Rabbi Yael Levy, who recently celebrated twenty years of serving the community, leads a Jewish mindfulness meditation program at the synagogue called A Way In, offering a weekly meditation that is open to all. Study at Mishkan Shalom sees learning as a lifelong pursuit. From Tot Shabbat services for the very young ones to a vibrant congregational school for K -7th grade and dynamic teen programs, Mishkan offers an interactive curriculum. On a typical Wednesday evening when Hebrew school is in session, the building buzzes with students learning through art, music, cooking and drama. In addition to supporting all kind of learners within the school, Mishkan also offers “Celebrations!”, a holiday program specially designed for families raising Jewish children with special needs, and “Mitzvah Menshes,” a monthly social group for young adults with cognitive disabilities. For adults, classes and events designed to stretch the mind inspire creativity and deepen engagement with Judaism are offered throughout the year and are open to everyone, not only synagogue members. Mishkan Shalom is proud to continue its tradition of welcoming everyone to join in services for the holidays like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Services are always warm and welcoming, featuring a mix of music and meditation, Hebrew and English, and sharing and reflection. Special children’s services are offered on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, as well as opportunities to join for communal meals.

When not being used for synagogue events, Mishkan’s beautiful building is also available to rent for weddings, birthdays and other events. One neighbor, whose baby shower was held in Mishkan’s social hall, recently rented the room to throw her baby’s first birthday party there again and on Sunday mornings, Mishkan’s sanctuary is filled with members of the City Light Church, which has been renting from the synagogue since 2012. The building also includes office space for rent and classrooms that can be used for school or camp rentals. Mishkan’s commitment to acts of caring focuses both on supporting members through life’s challenges as well as taking action around social justice issues. Rabbi Zevit and a core team of Mishkan activists work with other faith-filled congregations across the city and participate in the Interfaith Peace Walk, the New Sanctuary Movement, and address issues like sustainability and mass incarceration. The commitment to social justice is a common thread that brings people together. Talia Hoke moved to Manayunk last year and was delighted to discover Mishkan in her backyard. “Mishkan is the home for a diverse group of people and given my diverse background, I feel safe, accepted, supported and validated there,” Talia said. “I didn’t quite think that I’d be able to find a place that offered what I was looking for, but Mishkan is a synagogue that appreciates the beauty of diversity and connects its members to this beauty, both at home and the world at large.” Gabrielle Kaplan-Mayer has been a teacher at Mishkan Shalom since 1998. She is an educator and writer and recently released “The Little Gate Crasher.” Visit her at www.gabriellekaplanmayer.com.

Having The Guts
How Juliet Sabella followed her gut instinct more than once to build The Wall. By Caitlin Maloney

I
t was no surprise when The Wall Cycling Studio won “Best Fitness Studio” in this year’s Best Of Manayunk competition or when owner Julie Sabella landed on the cover of this year’s Be Well Philly’s Health + Fitness Guide. But it would have come as a surprise for 18-year-old Julie, an overweight soon to be college freshmen in August of 2003 who had just learned she was pre-diabetic. It was then that she knew she needed to make a change, a drastic one, so she started running. As she ran on the track alone at night and walked on the elliptical in the gym, the pounds began to melt off and Julie started on a path to a healthier lifestyle, never expecting where it would lead. After graduation, Julie moved to Manayunk where she met her future husband Karl, who can be credited for first really introducing her to indoor cycling. As an avid indoor cyclist, Karl asked Julie to join him for a class early on in their relationship. “It was so bad, I was sitting on a tricycle size bike because my seat was so low and my knees were hitting my chin,” Julie said. “Karl definitely made fun of me for that.” Julie continued to go to a few classes with Karl, but wasn’t convinced that cycling was really her thing. At the time, Julie was working as a fitness, equipment and apparel buyer for an online fitness store. And just like what happened to many working Americans during that time, she got laid off with no warning. “When I got laid off, I cried for two weeks,” Julie said. “Then my friend at the time was

saying, ‘You know what Manayunk needs? An indoor cycling studio.’ So, I went with her to another cycling class and that’s when it hit me, I knew this was something I had to bring to Manayunk.” For Julie, starting The Wall did not spur from a dream of having an indoor cycling studio, but rather on a gut instinct. “It was really impulsive and I don’t think I would do it now,” Julie laughed. “I can’t believe I was so ballzy like that, it still gives me palpitations thinking about it. It was really scary because I would sit up at night and think, ‘What am I doing?’” Julie didn’t know the first thing about opening an indoor cycling studio, so before she could actually open her doors, there was a lot of research that had to be done. Learning about the zoning and licensing regulations in Philadelphia was definitely a struggle, but what came easy to Julie was finding the perfect bikes. Ironically, she purchased those through the same company where she was just laid off. Then of course, was finding the studio space. That happened while she was walking down Levering Street one day and a ‘For Rent’ sign caught her eye. It was large windows that she first fell in love with. Once documents were signed, equipment was purchased, and the space was found, Julie still had to become officially certified to teach indoor cycling before opening her doors in May of 2012. The first few weeks, Julie admits there were classes with just one rider, and 16 of those classes she taught herself. As Julie brought on more instructors so she could teach fewer classes, they helped spread the word and before she knew it she was filling every bike. “The instructors are the reason we
are still so busy,” Julie said. “They are the ones that pull people. It’s as much their studio as it is mine because people come for them.” All instructors must get certified of course, but before they are ready to fully teach, Julie must mold them into Wall instructors. “Our instructors are all very different, but they all teach in the same high intensity interval style,” Julie said. “And they’re all really welcoming. If it’s your first class, they will come right up to you and introduce themselves and show you how to adjust your bike or how to stand correctly at the bar.” And as far as those great music mixes they play during class that are so perfectly timed with each workout, those are made by each individual instructor. “It’s their music and their class,” Julie said. Many of her instructors were also previous students themselves who love what the workout has done for them so much that they want to share it with others. “I always make sure to review the pros and cons though, they need to remember that it’s not their workout anymore,” Julie said. As word continued to spread and new instructors were brought on over the next three years, Julie soon started to feel like she was outgrowing her 700 square foot space, and she had her eyes set on not only relocating the Manayunk location, but also expanding to a new location and adding barre to The Wall’s class offerings. Just like indoor cycling, it wasn’t really love at first barre for Julie. After going to a barre class with her sister a few years prior, Julie admitted that she originally hated it. It wasn’t until her friend Jessie begged her to join her at another class that Julie’s love affair began and she knew it was

Manayunk has historically been known as a neighborhood of makers and manufacturers since its role as a booming mill town throughout the Industrial Revolution of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Though the times may have changed, some business owners continue the tradition by crafting their very own products within this community. This segment is designed to highlight these individual businesses and the products in which they specialize.

alter Palmer and his wife, Katy, stand side-by-side in their distillery at 376 Shurs Lane glancing up at the 800 liter copper pot still as it evaporates and condenses their latest batch of Liberty Gin. The Palmers go through this process once a week, yielding roughly 100-120 bottles in a given session. “The alchemy is somewhat mysterious,” Walter tells me as he briefly breaks from his stare at the 18th century-style apparatus. “We throw everything in that copper pot, which has magical powers in itself. We light up a flame to cook something that you drink and it physically changes your state. That’s a really powerful thing.” Walter never intended on distilling spirits to make a living. In fact, he had a very successful career serving as the President of the General Building Contractors Association. But after a change in the Board of Directors in 2012, his 27-year span at the company came to an end. Struggling to find a job that would pay his original salary, Walter began researching the craft of distilling. Katy took notice of her husband’s latest fascination and embraced it by granting him permission to invest in his very own still. Walter took distilling classes at Cornell University and was making trial batches of corn whiskey at home by 2013. Walter eventually shifted his sights toward creating his very own gin.
Since gin is one of the fastest spirits to make with no maturation needed, Walter could easily experiment with different recipes and send samples to friends, family, and various beverage connoisseurs in exchange for their feedback. “As I looked for a job, I kept distilling partially for therapy to keep busy and active but also to learn a different craft, and people really liked what I was making,” Walter said. “So that was my Plan B and as I kept getting turned down from jobs, Plan B moved to Plan A.” Starting his very own distillery was no simple task. In order to get the permitting from local, state, and federal officials, Walter had to hold a lease on a space that would allow distilling on its premises. Walter looked all over the city for a location to make his spirits and in 2014, he stumbled upon a section of the Manayunk’s Feltworks building on Shurs Lane that was listed for rent. The Palmers were already familiar with the neighborhood. Katy lived in Manayunk while dating Walter and the couple even bought a house here when they got married and had a son before moving to Chestnut Hill. Knowing the town and the abundance of potential bars and restaurants to work with, Walter had made up his mind and by May 6, 2015, Walter was distilling his first official batch of Liberty Gin in Manayunk. “The nice thing about this space is that we’re doing what it’s zoned for. We didn’t have to get a variance,” Walter said. “The community was built for this. Whether they’re making wallpaper or floral designs or beer or gin, this neighborhood has historically been about makers.” One can’t ignore the craftsmanship behind Liberty Gin. Walter intended to create a gin that reflected the spirit’s origins. In his research, Walter came across an Old Dutch recipe with ties to the spice trade during the American Revolution that seemed to be the foundation of all gins thereafter. From there, Walter sought to balance out the precise proportions of his six essential botanicals: Juniper, lemon peel, angelica root, cardamom, coriander, and grains of paradise. He created 57 versions of the recipe and after many accolades from his peers, Walter settled on one that came to be known as Liberty Gin. “It’s very simple but it’s wonderfully elegant. That’s all it is,” Walter said. “Our gin doesn’t have to be bells and whistles and the John Philip Sousa band. It’s amazing how something simple can be so beautiful.” And you can’t argue with the man. One sip and your taste buds immediately recognize the citrusy tones of lemon peel and cardamom. Out of the still, the gin clocks in at roughly 75% ABV until it is mixed with Pennsylvania spring water, which brings it down to 45% ABV. Even if you don’t normally drink gin, Walter’s product will show you there’s more to the spirit than your preconceived notions. “A lot of times, people come in here and tell us how they had a bad experience with gin when they were younger,” Katy said. “Slowly but surely, we convince them to try ours and we love to see their facial expressions because they can’t believe how smooth it is.” In the first year of business alone, Palmer Distilling has witnessed such a great deal of growth. Liberty Gin is now available at 15 different state stores in the region with another five in the works. Some of our local bars and restaurants also seized the opportunity to stock their shelves and create cocktails with such a fine, locally sourced gin including The Goat’s Beard, Manayunk Brewery, MAYA.J, and Anastasi Raw Bar. The Palmers have even won a silver medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition this past March for their gin. But Palmer Distilling is not limited to Liberty Gin alone. The guy changed the world and this is what he was drinking.” Looking ahead, Walter and Katy have big plans for their business. In addition to free tastings throughout the week, the Palmers are looking to host a number of small events in the distillery this summer like live music and art shows, all while whipping up cocktails now that they’ve added a wooden bar at the front of the space. Walter has also discussed broadening the number of brands under Palmer Distilling by making other spirits further down the road like rum, whiskey, and limoncello. As for right now, Walter seems comfortable having his hands full with providing the Philadelphia region with his iconic, award-winning gin. “We had people come into the distillery a day or two after Thanksgiving to buy bottles. They were at their family dinner, had a cocktail with our gin in it and loved it so much that they couldn’t leave town without it,” Walter said. “To me, that’s the greatest part of this whole thing. We’ve created something that goes into somebody’s house and actually changes them into a better state. Then they come back here and tell us about. It’s just a wonderful thing to me.”
They don’t stay little forever...

How Mary Spears modernized a niche market to make it work for the modern day woman. By Jessica Jozwiak

The Rebirth of Vintage
I
t was while Mary Spears was pursuing a master’s degree in American literature and feminist theory, that she began selling vintage clothing online from her Boston apartment. But what started as a side project to earn a little extra money, quickly turned into a passion as her online following began to grow. “I started sharing what I was doing and people really connected with it.” Mary said. So, after more thought, she mustered the courage to let go of her five year plan of completing her masters degree and turned her hobby into a full time business. “When I started this all two years ago, there was the vintage niche, but it was vintage for people who loved vintage. I came on the scene and I was doing something different. I wanted to do vintage for everybody and make it accessible, relevant, and modern. I think the concept was fresh and exciting to people.” Mary realized how much she enjoyed what she was doing and the positive responses she was getting from her new followers and buyers, who were always excited to see what she was going to post next. So, after more thought, she mustered the courage to let go of following her five year plan and leave her master’s degree behind to turn her hobby into a full-time business. “I never thought I would quit anything, but quitting grad school was the best decision for me,” she said. “When following your passion, you just have to put your head down and work really hard when your gut is telling you to trust something, just trust yourself and jump.” She began to source more clothing, learned everything there was to know about the fashion industry in each era of the 20th Century and reacquainted herself with her sewing machine. And when it came to naming her new shop, Mary looked to her master’s studies of American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. “I really fell in love with her work as a romantic lyricist and feminist. She was so ambitious and beautiful and truly cared about herself sartorially in addition to intellectually,” Mary said. “It was a natural jump for me to use her as a prototype for the type of woman I shop for and the type of woman I build the shop around since she was so much

a part of my life already.” As she began sharing her new finds online and on her Instagram account, her online following took on a life of it’s own; her Instagram now boasts nearly 30,000 followers. While most businesses start with a brick and mortar and then turn to online marketing, Mary did just the opposite. “I was so grassroots. Since I dropped out of grad school, I really had to hustle to make it worthwhile,” Mary said. “I have so much to be grateful for. I wouldn’t have this shop if I didn’t have people supporting my online shop and following me on social media.” Soon after, her once side-project started to outgrow her one-bedroom apartment. With the news of her husband Will’s acceptance to medical school at Drexel University College of Medicine, they packed up their Boston apartment and moved to East Falls. Shortly after, Mary opened a much needed studio space in Kensington. While they enjoyed living in East Falls, they found themselves spending most of their time on Main Street in Manayunk and became friendly with many of the shop owners including Stacy, of Meadowsweet Mercantile. It was when Stacy decided to move her shop to Old City and needed a subletter as soon as possible, that having a storefront on Main Street was put on Mary’s radar. While she was happy with her growing online business and current studio, Mary fell in love with the space and knew she had to make the move. In her words, “There’s something so magical here. It was a total impulse moment that I jumped in with only a week to prepare to open,” Mary said. “We opened the shop and moved to Manayunk and now I live manayunk.com | Summer 2016

it was introduced during the World War II era. If it sounds like a lot of work, that’s because it is. “I probably sleep four hours a night,” Mary said. “For every pretty moment you see here, there are 250 un-pretty moments to get us here like driving over two hours at 4 a.m. to dig through someone else’s trash to find treasure. Every piece on a hanger has gone through me driving somewhere, finding it, bringing it home, washing it four or five times, figuring out how to press and iron it, and how to put it in a context where it makes sense in the modern world.” It’s Mary job to bring everything back to life and every week is a rebirth of new things as she changes out inventory in her brick and mortar shop and adds new things to her online store. Every item that goes online has to be photographed, descriptions have to be written and then it gets promoted on social media, and Mary does all of that herself. While it’s a lot of work, it’s all worth it for Mary when she sees magical moments happen in her store. “When someone finds the perfect thing, I get to watch them come alive,” Mary said. “I’ve sold a lot of wedding dresses to brides and it’s always really special to see them connect with an old piece at such an important moment in their life.” For those that haven’t ventured into vintage clothing, Mary urges you to keep an open mind and try different styles and fits. “Vintage clothing fits very differently and most of the time people are surprised by what looks great on them,” Mary said. “Go into a shop and try a few things on even if you think you would never wear that cut because it hasn’t been flattering on you in the past. Your body is always changing and your confidence level is always changing, so don’t get too stuck on what you think would look better on somebody else’s body.”

about 30 steps away from my store which couldn’t be any more convenient.” When you step into Millay Vintage’s brick and mortar home at 4390 Main Street, you’re immersed in a truly unique shopping experience, surrounded by Mary’s simple yet stunning aesthetic. Her bright and open shop is a temporary home to hundreds of pieces that have each been hand-picked to go on a journey to eventually land on the rack. All of the pieces are hand picked by Mary and sourced mostly from New York, “but the specifics of that have to be kept a trade secret,” Mary laughed. Mary wasn’t new to hand picking pieces though. Growing up, her single mother taught her how to be creative with limited resources and she began to appreciate vintage and recycled clothing at a young age. She would often pick up garments at yard sales and thrift stores and learned to make them into her own by altering and restyling them to work just for her. To ensure that she is providing elevated vintage and luxury items that aren’t falling off the hanger, Mary looks for top of the line constructed pieces from designers she’s familiar with. Once she finds those, Mary spends hours researching the pieces to find out where it came from, what era it was built in and how she can repair it. While it is now much easier for Mary to identify from what era an item was constructed, it came with several years of practice. “There are a lot of standout parts of construction that are dead giveaways,” Mary said. “For example, if something has a zipper on the side versus a zipper on the back, it indicates if it’s pre-60’s or post-60’s. Pieces that are very couture-level and hand-sewn pre-date manufactured 1940’s clothing.” Another thing to look at is fabric, Mary said, if it’s rayon that’s a sign that manayunk.com | Summer 2016

DINE: CONVERSATION WITH THE CHEF
From 9th Street to Main Street An Italian Market legacy arrives on Main Street.
The Anastasi name has been prevalent on the Italian Market scene for more than 100 years, ever since Sicilian immigrant Thomas Anastasi first came to the United States and sold fish off a pushcart. The pushcart turned into a fish market, and the fish market eventually became Anastasi Seafood, one of the Italian Market’s best restaurants. As the 9th Street location flourished, the next Anastasi generation had their eyes set on other locations. First up was Pescatore, a BYOB located in Bala Cynwyd, followed more recently by Anastasi Raw Bar in Manayunk. Brother and sister team Tom and Mia Anastasi along with partner Frank Kemp opened the 36
Raw Bar in October of last year after being approached by Pescatore regular Allen Newman of Neducsin Properties. Allen tried to persuade the trio of partners into opening up an Italian restaurant at the former Beast and Ale location on Main Street. Reluctantly, Tom and Frank agreed to take a tour of the space. “We did a walkthrough and our first reaction was ‘No way in hell,’” Frank said laughingly as he sat at the bar of the new restaurant. “An Italian restaurant will never work here. It’s just not laid out right for it… But an oyster bar might work. It was something we always wanted to do.” Tom and Frank returned to Pescatore after their tour to discuss the building’s potential. After

through Tommy and Mia’s parents, we buy directly from the purveyors. We don’t go to a middle market in between, which is really nice because we get the freshest product at the best price.” But the food menu isn’t the only thing bringing customers through the door. The bar menu features craft cocktails are designed to enhance the salty, seawater flavors of their oysters like the Sour Ginger made with Kinsey Rye, Lemonada made with Sauza Tequila, and the Italian 75 made with Manayunk’s very own Liberty Gin (See Pg …). If you prefer beer, Anastasi serves six rotating draft beers plus roughly 18 different cans and bottles. And for you wine lovers, you’ll find a hearty selection of four draft wines and 16 bottled brands. Tom, Mia, and Frank have some big plans for the Raw Bar’s roof deck this summer. They are looking to host live music on the deck at least twice a week (one night and one brunch) in addition to hosting various Clambake-style events that will let their patrons indulge in the true experience shore-side dining right here in Manayunk. The Anastasi name and reputation for fantastic dining and service have already given the Raw Bar a leg up on becoming a staple within the neighborhood. As a family business, the partners and staff take notice of their regulars and consistently adapt their business model to fit the needs of their clientele. With unique menu options set in a classy, yet comfortable dining environment, Anastasi Raw Bar gives our neighborhood one more reason to consider Manayunk as a restaurant destination. “Manayunk has been wonderful so far,” Mia said. “It’s totally different than what we are all used to. much deliberation, the idea of a raw bar in Manayunk kept making its way back in their conversations. Now more than half a year into operation, Anastasi Raw Bar has become the go-to spot in Manayunk for seafood lovers and landlubbers alike. “We really do have great quality food,” Mia said. “Frank, my brother, and I try so hard to make every customer happy so we really put our heart and soul into this to be successful. We give it our all and that says a lot about us.” In the kitchen, head chef Ken Wallace and his cooks keep customers captivated by whipping up everything from salads and small bites to signature dishes like their Snow Crabs, Lobster Roll, and Squid Ink Risotto (pictured above). They’ve also got a stellar brunch lineup every Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm including the Crab Scramble, Omelette Arnold Bennet and Salmon Benny. But the true star of the show has to be their raw bar. Depending on the season, you can always find a selection of three to seven different types of oysters hailing from the East and West Coasts. Even when the number of types of oysters is down, the variety of what they do with them doesn’t change. They fry them, grill them, and serve them on sandwiches and in cocktail shooters. From the sweet Kumamotos to the briny Quonset Points of New England to the locally sourced Cape May Salts, the team at Anastasi encourages everyone who has yet to try a raw oyster to do so during Happy Hour Monday through Friday from 5pm to 7pm, when they offer “Buck-A-Shuck” oysters and clams. You just can’t beat that. “What separates us from other markets and restaurants is our access to product,” Frank said. “Having connections on the Italian Market manayunk.com | Summer 2016

PLAY: ALONG THE TRAIL
Tour Of The Towpath Just off Main Street, the Manayunk Towpath takes you into a world of its own. By Dave Scarpello
Nowhere is it more evident as to why this distinction was given than in Manayunk. The Towpath leads you from the amalgam of industrial past, public artwork and bustle of Main Street to a serene natural oasis just west of the Green Lane Bridge. The trail opens up into a world seemingly removed from the city yet well within its borders. This is the area I refer to as my happy place. It’s where I go to run and walk, unwind and reflect. I’m never on the towpath with headphones on as the sounds of nature and greetings from dog walkers, cyclists and fellow runners serve as my soundtrack. The babbling of the side brooks that feed the canal, the call of the numerous bird species I encounter, the splashing of the skittish turtles as they retreat into the protection of the canal and even the not so friendly warning calls from the Canadian geese reminding me that I’m a visitor in their territory serve as the tracks that make up the album I’ve come to love over the years.

The arrival of summer in Manayunk awakens new life in this old, historic town. As the clocks turn forward in the spring and the weather gets warmer as summer approaches, we emerge from our winter time banishment of treadmill, we’re afforded the opportunity to reunite with an old friend we lovingly call “The Towpath.” The Towpath along the Manayunk Canal is the local section of the Schuylkill River Trail, recently named America’s Best Urban Trail by USA Today.

People seem genuinely more at ease and happier on the towpath. Trail users that would typically pass me by without eye contact or acknowledgment on the nearby concrete grid pause and smile with a friendly hello. It’s the beauty all around us that evokes such behavior. A trip up the canal is concurrently an exercise outing, a visit into nature and a tour of the shattered remnants of Manayunk’s glorious past as America’s “workshop of the world.” The graffiti scarred ruins of the Manayunk Pump House intertwine with blooming flowers and migratory birds. A mere twenty feet off the path and just west of the pump house are the remains of a traditional Japanese fountain that was once a crown jewel of the area and a place to stop and reflect on the way to the Shawmont train station, the oldest passenger rail stop in the world, whose decrepit yet regal shell still guards over the trail as it crosses her still active tracks.

NOW OPEN Manayunk Bridge Trail Though it technically opened in November, this April saw the official kick off and opening of the Manayunk Bridge Trail. Accessed at Baker and Dupont Streets, the new bridge trail connects Manayunk to Lower Merion and the Cynwyd Heritage Trail allowing walkers and bikers to easily cross the country lines. At the opening event in April, visitors enjoyed free outdoor fitness activities on the bridge including yoga, boot camp, and a barre class along with a trail run across the bridge. The entire bridge is part of The Circuit Trails, which connect hundreds of miles of trails in Greater Philadelphia. Chabaa Thai Bistro Since Chef Moon closed the doors of her award winning Chabaa Thai restaurant, anticipation has been running high while regulars awaited the opening of the brand new location. Well, the wait is finally over and the doors have officially opened at 4334 Main Street and trust us, it was worth the wait. Chef Moon is still serving up the same craveworthy Thai dishes she always has, but now the architecture and decor transport you right back to Moon’s home country.
Binto Market & Cafe Chef Moon couldn’t help but turn the space next to the new Chabaa Thai, at 4345 Main Street, into a quick and casual Asian market. Binto is a homechef’s dream, filled with pre-prepped meals ready to take home and prepare in your own kitchen. The shelves and cases are also stocked with Chef Moon’s signature sauces including curry paste, pad thai sauce, salad dressings and hot sauces. Bring the kids along as you shop to enjoy the Play Market which is owned and operated by Moon’s 9-year-old daughter, Tinnha.
Anila’s Dress Maker Anila has opened the doors to her custom-made dress and repair and alteration shop at 4359 Main Street. Appointments can be made by calling 267-231-1192. Brazilian Wax & Spa by Claudia Now open at 4370 Main Street, the new Brazilian wax studio accepts walk-in, but recommends making an appointment by calling 267-766-5956. Verizon Wireless Pick up the newest smartphone at Verizon Wireless’ new location at 4320 Main Street.
