The Grape Room: A place for local Manayunk Musicians to perform and grow By Alexandra Cohen Photography By JPG Photo & Video

S

queezed between the hillside rowhomes and bustling restaurants just off Main Street, you may hear the distinct sound of guitars being tuned, singers warming up their voices, and a long line of eager fans waiting to get the best spot in the house. If you follow the excitement, you will find yourself in front of Manayunk’s best kept secret - The Grape Room. The Grape Room, located conveniently at 105 Grape Street, is a bi-level music venue with different events happening throughout the week. First opening in the mid 70’s, The Grape Room has so much history that it cannot be considered just a music venue. It is a milestone, a beginning, and a place to connect. The Grape Room thrives on providing a stage for musicians local to Manayunk and throughout the Greater Philadelphia area. The owner of The Grape Room, Brian Hassinger, or more commonly known as “Scooter,” knows the love and devotion that the venue has to offer the community. Scooter started off at the Grape Room as a performer himself along with his band in 1992. It evolved into monthly performances and soon, Scooter became a major part of the business. Whether he was up on stage performing, serving up refreshing drinks for the crowd, booking bands for the next weekend to perform, or working on sound (all of which he still does), Scooter was there to help in one way or another, and it led him to eventually become the owner to keep the venue thriving the same way it’s always been. Scooter goes on to describe the vibrant music scene that is a part of Manayunk. “There is a hearty Manayunk music scene,” Scooter said. “You know a lot of musicians who have been entrenched in the Grape and the music scene in Manayunk are now expanding into the city and it’s pretty awesome.” While Manayunk does not have as large of venues that can be found throughout the different neighborhoods of Philadelphia like The Fillmore or The Met - everyone must start somewhere. That’s why intimate venues like The Grape Room are so important to the

community. Giving local musicians a stage and an opportunity to show their amazing talents to the world will and can change their lives. Kevin McCall, who is the current booking agent, also started off his connection with The Grape Room by performing with his band, Andorra. He emphasizes the importance of local bands. “It’s kind of like the idea that a national band is equivalent to a teacher getting tenure where it is like you can phone it in, whereas local bands still need to prove themselves and they are looking to do that everytime they hit the stage,” Kevin states. “That’s why it’s the best. That’s why they sorta bleed it out everytime they can go up on stage and do their thing. Everybody is looking to prove something.” Another great emphasis on The Grape Room’s values is that they give the opportunity for these musicians to grow and connect with other venues and performers in the scene to sing their heart out every single opportunity they can. To see musicians who started performing for the first time at The Grape Room and advanced to performing at Kung Fu Necktie or J.C. Dobbs is a proud moment. Some bands make it even bigger to perform at The Mann Center and other large scale venues, but, they would not have been there without the opportunities that small, local venues offer. The Grape Room will never forget the artists who have played at the venue and have moved on to the bigger adventures either! On stage, you will see a mural that is of a spaceship shooting a rocket. This is a dedication to every single artist who has gone up on the stage to perform and give the room a piece of themselves. They give their time and musical abilities, and all performers are important. It shows that The Grape Room will help you explode into the great music world! Having a place to gather and connect as a community is extremely important as well. The Grape Room does not have an audience just for the young, newly 21 crowd, they bring in all walks of life no matter what. Whether you are there to support your friend performing Winter 2022-2023 | manayunk.com 15

or need a break from reality and a night full of dancing, all are welcome with open arms. Scooter goes on to describe a time when these performers and the community needed this reality break the most : The COVID-19 pandemic. Just like many, many other Manayunk businesses and music venues throughout the world, The Grape Room needed to pivot the business model and navigate the new and scary reality. With performers not having a stage to perform - it was a very uneasy time for supporters of the music scene. The venue did not want to lose the sense of community or lose the opportunities to give the local musicians a platform. so The Grape Room pivoted. While cramming the usual three hundred people into the bar would not work for everyone’s safety and health, the venue decided to take a 180 turn. Opening the jumbo windows in the front, the band set up facing towards the street. Attendants would bring beach chairs to watch and nearby neighbors sat up on their roofs and decks to watch the performances as happy music flooded the street, and times seemed to be just okay for a moment again. “It gives me chills,” Scooter recalls. “It was a time, it was certainly a time and place to live through that. As I said, these musicians, they are the new falcons of Manayunk spreading their good word around the city.” Now that regulations are lifted and attendants are welcomed back inside, The Grape Room is back to the regular schedule of serving up drinks and ensuring music that anyone can dance along to! With a packed and exciting weekly schedule, there is always something for everyone. There are a variety of different events that occur throughout the week. If you 16

want to start your week with a little laughter boost, The Grape Room has an open comedy night each Tuesday evening! If you are looking for something more relaxed and want to just jam - Wednesdays are for you at the Open Jam sessions. If you have a band that is looking to get their foot in the door - The Grape Room offers a rocking Music Open Mic night every Thursday evening! And throughout the weekend on Fridays and Saturdays, you can find live shows being hosted with remarkable bands. “I’ve witnessed bands forming at open mics that have gone on to play the room on a Saturday night and essentially sell it out,” Kevin discusses the important of each night they offer, “Countless musicians that have gone to open mic night and just said ‘Hey would you like to start a band?’ and then next thing you know they have a Saturday night show booked there. That is the natural tradjerectory of how the Grape Room works. We sorta see it from start to finish and then expand into even more by performing in other clubs and see these bands become a really great staple in the Philadelphia area.” And we cannot forget the ones who organize and grind each night to ensure that each and every patron is enjoying their evening. Whether it is the ones preparing the beverages, the security guards checking IDs, sound, lights, and everything else! The night would not be complete without these hard workers and dedication. Kevin concludes by stating, “Your perspective walking down Main Street and coming up Grape, expecting to just have a shot and a beer. And then you see this band is killing it on stage playing their heart out. People react and stick around and love it, which is what The Grape Room really wants to offer.” Winter 2022-2023 | manayunk.com 17

hen reflecting back on Manayunk’s history, it’s impossible to ignore its longstanding reputation as a central hub for textile manufacturing. While that industry has since disappeared today in the 21st century, one company continues to honor the spirit of the neighborhood’s past, but with a modern and innovative spin. Married couple and business partners Liz Galbraith and Ephraim “Ephi” Paul have spent more than two decades designing custom printed fabrics and wallpaper inside their Manayunk studio, a former textile mill, located at the corner of Cresson Street and Shurs Lane. “This whole location is amazing,” Liz said. “We love that we’re tapping into the textile tradition of the area and continuing to pay homage to it but taking it to the next level.” “We’re breathing new life into this building’s history and it’s amazing to be part of the next chapter of making and manufacturing in Philadelphia,” Ephi said. “This building is perfect for that.” Liz and Ephi were both born and raised in Chicago, but moved to Philadelphia’s Old City in the mid 1980s. With a background in fine art, Liz knew that she wanted to open a studio to make crafts that were not only visually appealing, but functional as well. She soon found a space for rent nearby from notable Philadelphian Ted Newbold, which was once the workspace of Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi. Ted had shown Liz his collection of Noguchi’s iconic Akari paper lanterns. Feeling inspired and recalling her past interest in papermaking during her time in college, Liz realized in that moment she could make this type of craft in her own unique way. Liz traveled to Japan to learn more about the papermaking process and upon her return to Philadelphia, Liz and Ephi generated a technique for creating their own line of paper lamps. They made the paper themselves using fibers imported from Asia, Liz designed the printed patterns, and they sourced all of the hardware for the lamps directly from local manufacturers in Philadelphia. During that time, Liz and Ephi also happened to be neighbors with longtime custom wood furniture makers Jack Larimore and Bob Ingram, who introduced the couple to a network of trade shows and wholesale craft markets where they could sell their products. After displaying at their first show in 1986, stores began to recognize and makes purchases from the brand-new company: Galbraith & Paul. “It was a totally process oriented product and Liz really innovated that traditional technique to create very interesting prints,” Ephi said. “We suddenly had a business, we had

orders, and we started making them.” By the late 90s, Liz and Ephi began to move away from paper-making as the couple saw a new path for their business. While visiting London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, Liz perused through the traditional block printed fabric and textile collections from William Morris and Liberty of London. After studying them and the traditional processes by which they were made, Liz once again found a way to innovate a traditional craft for a modern market. “With traditional Indian block printing, they would use carved wood, vegetable dyes, and pigments.” Liz said. “Our blocks are made of foam rubber that we laser-cut. We then apply the foam pieces to plexiglass, which is very lightweight so our printers can handle the blocks. We also use permanent fabric paint and create and mix all of our own colors.” Galbraith & Paul began to sell handmade, block printed fabrics, and the new venture brought about a brand-new way of how they sold their product. With the paper lamps, Liz and Ephi sold directly to retail stores. As the fabric line became more developed, they soon learned to sell by the yard exclusively to the trade and to interior designers, which made the product more customizable and exposed it to a high-end clientele. By 2000, Galbraith & Paul had stopped making paper entirely as they completely shifted to fabric-making and began searching for a new space to house their operations. Living in Lower Merion, Liz and Ephi were familiar with Manayunk. Driving through the neighborhood one day, they stumbled upon an available ground-floor space for rent at 116 Shurs Lane, which at the time was a dilapidated vacant furniture warehouse. Coincidentally, they discovered in their research that the site used to be known as “Byrne’s Mill”, a prominent former textile manufacturer in Manayunk. With the building’s history and proximity to the neighborhood’s thriving commercial corridor, Liz and Ephi were convinced Manayunk was the place they were meant to be. “We were just drawn to the area,” Ephi said. “We had never really gone off of Main Street when we first came down here. We didn’t even think there was a neighborhood to it until that moment. But we fell in love with the space and we knew we wanted to be here.” As the business grew over the years, so did the demand for more workspace. What started as a portion of ground-floor studio space soon expanded into the entire first and second floors of the building as the Galbraith & Paul products, designs, and brand became known throughout the world. Knowing they were here in Manayunk to stay, Liz and Ephi officially purchased the property in 2017. Winter 2022-2023 | manayunk.com 23

Today, Galbraith & Paul offers high-end, custom-made fabrics, wallpaper, and rugs in 35 unique patterns and over 200 colors. In addition, they also make hand block printed pillows that are sold exclusively through Room & Board. Due to the high demand for their quality products, Liz and Ephi estimate their lead time for fabric orders averages around 12 to 14 weeks. “Part of what is special about us is that we do everything under one roof,” Ephi said. “Liz designs all of the patterns with her team. We make our own blocks, we develop our own colors and mix our own paints, and we’ve developed this innovative way of hand-blocking it. It’s very homegrown and unique and it’s all done right here.” Galbraith & Paul would not be where it is today if not for the team that helps perform this elaborate process. The company currently employs 20 skilled artisans who specialize in everything from design to hand-block printing to paint mixing to laser printing and digital wallpaper production. Liz focuses more on the design and craftsmanship side while Ephi handles business administration. But for the Galbraith & Paul power couple, a work-life balance has always been a key factor for their work. “Our business is very values-driven. It always has been,” Liz said. “We’ve always worked a 4-day work week and we’re really committed to employing artists. We provide health insurance, retirement, and vacation so we’re not doing the 4-day week to make this job part time. We’re doing it to allow people to have time to do the things that they love in life and bring that energy back into the work environment.” One of Galbraith & Paul’s taglines is “Dedicated to the studio workshop tradition, evolving in new and unexpected ways.” The sentiment rings true as Liz and Ephi aren’t afraid to break new grounds and experiment with new ways of improving their processes. Liz finds inspiration all around her when it comes to creating new patterns, from the plants in her garden to traditional textiles, and blending them in a transitional way that bridges to any type of design style. 24

manayunk.com | Winter 2022-2023

“When I’m working on a design, I often hone it down to its very simple components because I like to have something that touches on a bunch of traditions but doesn’t land in any,” Liz said. “It can then be at home in a lot of different kinds of environments.” Looking ahead to what the future has in store, Liz and Ephi have plans to construct their very own trade showroom on the second floor of their building to display their products for their design clients. And for the first time since 2019, they will finally host their annual Sample Sale again on Saturday, December 3rd from 10AM to 5PM. This holiday shopping event not only gives customers the opportunity to purchase pillows, wallpaper, and fabric directly from the studio where these items are created, but there will also be a boutique-style setup that highlights the work of both current and former employees. Galbraith & Paul’s dedication to their craft shines through all aspects of their work. Despite the building’s unassuming exterior, their studio holds the stories of Manayunk’s industrial past and upholds the neighborhood’s legacy as a nucleus for makers and creators. Liz and Ephi love many aspects about Manayunk, from supporting the small businesses on Main Street to the proximity to the river and their home in Lower Merion to the accessibility via public transportation for their employees. But what they love the most about this neighborhood is that they get to honor these traditions of their trade while simultaneously continuing to innovate and create in a place that has always allowed its makers to thrive. “Philadelphia is a really nice place for people in creative and innovative fields because there is a large community, it’s affordable, and it’s accessible,” Liz said. “There’s such a strong creative spirit here.” “And we see that with our team,” Ephi said. “We have so many artists here who are actively doing their thing. It’s really nice to be connected to that. We may be a business, but we’re a business of makers. This neighborhood and this building for us is a nexus of things that we really believe in and are about. It’s a great place to make things.” Winter 2022-2023 | manayunk.com 25

Barista’s Choice By Caitlin Marsilii Photos by JPG Photo & Video (jpgphotography.com)

The tables have turned…Manayunk baristas ordered for me, and it was brew-tiful! There’s no doubt that Manayunk has some of the best coffee. Around every corner, there’s a cafe. On every menu, there’s a new latte to try or freshly roasted beans to pick up, and behind every counter is a warm and welcoming barista! With all the options, sometimes it can be hard to choose what to get, so I decided to let the baristas choose. I sat down with six different baristas to talk about their drink of choice and their story. 34

Yaseen - Mama’s Boy Cafe Nestled cozily inside Fat Lady Brewing was my first stop, Mama’s Boy Cafe. Right when I stepped in, I was greeted by barista and owner, Yaseen Elzalabany, who was ready to talk about coffee, books, art, and really, anything on my mind. He genuinely wants to get to know everyone who steps into Mama’s Boy Cafe and wants to make them feel at home. It’s clear that home, family, and connection are all important elements to Yaseen, and guests at Mama’s Boy Cafe can really feel that in their experience. As you browse the menu, you’ll find that some items are personalized and named after people in his life. Yaseen also explained how his guests are more than just a face at Mama’s Boy Cafe: “I want everyone to feel like they’re a part of the cafe’s journey and that they’re growing with the business.” For Yaseen, it really is about building relationships and taking care of cafe guests the same way they take care of him.

Yaseen’s Story Yaseen has worked a variety of roles in different businesses and restaurants around Manayunk. He landed a job working at Fat Lady Brewing and worked out an agreement to take over the front of house space for Mama’s Boy Cafe. His parents own a coffee shop and restaurant in Allentown called Mo’s Eatery, so in a way, the cafe pays homage to his family. He also considers himself a mama’s boy hence the name.

Yaseen’s Choice The Little Zooz: This drink is at the top of the list for Yaseen. It’s near and dear to his heart as it is named after his eight year old brother, Zain. It is a latte made with a double shot of espresso, milk, and raspberry and mocha flavoring. He wanted to incorporate some of Zain’s tastes into the drink with the flavors and feels that it has the ultimate at-home taste.

Dickey & Aubrey - Artesano Cafe Among the art, plants, and coffee, I met with Dickey Valerio and Aubrey Fetzer in Artesano Cafe. You always leave Artesano feeling energized, and it’s not just because of the caffeine. Every visit is different because of the upbeat, creative energy of the staff. Dickey’s and Aubrey’s positivity just fills the room, and in talking with them, I found out more about Artesano Cafe’s creative efforts. Aubrey explained how they’re offered a lot of creative freedom and how they hire a lot of people who are artists or who have a creative outlet besides coffee. “We like to connect those parts and to find ways to share more about ourselves with the community,” Aubrey said. “It’s cool that we can share a part of our lives with them too.” Dickey also agreed that it’s all about the community and the happiness of fresh air and plants. “That’s what keeps me coming back with a smile every morning,” he said, “the people I work with and the people in the Manayunk community that I see everyday.”

Dickey’s Story Dickey is from a coffee family and remembers being served lattes at home since he was five years old. His experience in coffee eventually expanded outside of his family where he became a barista and took on managerial positions in the cafe. He likes being prideful of his work as a manager and the challenge of running a cafe smoothly with all the different pieces involved.

Aubrey’s Story Aubrey worked at a coffee co-op in college where she developed her barista skills and focused on community outreach efforts. After school, she was hired on at Artesano Cafe and has been loving it ever since.

Dickey & Aubrey’s Choice The Coraline: Brought out for fall last year, the Coraline has become a customer favorite. It’s up there with the most ordered regular cafe items and is what Dickey calls an “Artesano Classic.” The drink is a latte which consists of white chocolate and hazelnut. Recommended hot, the mix of flavors bring a warm and cozy experience to your taste buds. Aubrey noted its simplicity: “We have some drinks that are a little crazier in terms of syrups and sauces, but the Coraline is just two simple ingredients that taste really different together.”

Casey - Valerio Coffee Roasters At Valerio Coffee Roasters, I sat down with Casey Coleman. One conversation with Casey, and you can tell that she holds a ton of knowledge when it comes to coffee. From temperatures to technique, she can answer almost any question. I asked her all about Valerio’s espresso and imports. She noted how the cafe strives for flavor in all roasts: “There’s just something different about every single bean.” She highly recommends that everyone try their espresso as it is just as good alone as it is in drinks. Casey really can make something for everyone - from the black coffee drinker to the extravagant latte lover.

Casey’s Story Casey has been a barista for four years. She has been with Valerio Coffee Roasters for two of those years, and is now the cafe’s manager. One of her favorite parts about being a barista is the creativity and being able to use the fundamental building blocks to expand the menu.

Casey’s Choice Oat Milk Cortado: Casey’s oat milk cortado really highlights the craft and quality being served up at Valerio. The drink is equal parts espresso to steamed milk with just a spot of foam. It’s served at a sipping temperature of about 120 degrees, so it can be enjoyed right when you get it. Casey has made this drink her go-to because of its practicality. The drink gets her going in the morning and is ideal in the sense that you can finish it all without it getting cold.

Ali - Pilgrim Roasters Ali McBride brought me behind the scenes at Pilgrim Roasters. In speaking with her, I learned about how Pilgrim goes beyond the day-to-day and how there’s a story and depth to their roasting process. Since they opened, Pilgrim has been working and building longterm relationships with small scale farmers abroad who harvest and export beans. They’ve been working with some farmers for over five years, and in talking with Ali, it’s clear that there’s meaning behind these relationships. In fact, much of what Ali loves about Pilgrim is that a lot of what they do has meaning. In past jobs, she said that brewing coffee was just a means to an end for the shop, but at Pilgrim, they look at the whole process. “I actually care about what I’m doing,” she said. “I’m not just pumping out drinks, but I’m really learning about the craft.”

Ali’s Story Ali started working at a big coffee shop about four years ago while in college. She always loved coffee and is a self-proclaimed caffeine addict. Since she was already interested in coffee, she figured that working as a barista would be a great way to fuel her caffeine addiction. In 2020, Alistarted working at Pilgrim Roasters and fell in love with the customer base, the culture, and the Manayunk community overall.

Ali’s Choice Maple Cinnamon Latte: Pilgrim’s maple cinnamon latte is one of their featured winter drinks. It’s a regular latte with maple syrup and a dash of cinnamon dust. Ali prefers it with oat milk and thinks it’s the perfect drink to cozy up with. While she also really likes chai lattes, Ali overall recommends the maple cinnamon latte for the caffeine kick and espresso taste. Winter 2022-2023 | manayunk.com 37

Barista’s Bonus When sitting down with everyone, I asked them what they would choose if they could turn anything into a coffee drink. This is what they came up with.

Kelly - Volo Coffeehouse At Volo Coffeehouse, I had the honor of sitting down with Kelly Monahan, who described Volo as a learning atmosphere. In the traditional sense, she said there’s always a new technique to master or the challenge of making a new drink. There’s also always something new to learn about the customers and regulars day-to-day. “When I first started, it was really the people that drew me in,” she said. “But this time around, I’ve unpeeled a whole other layer about how much there is to learn about coffee.” In addition to the learning atmosphere, Kelly mentioned that the owner, Akos, is one of the best bosses she’s ever had. He goes out of his way to make Volo feel like a home to the staff and to make sure that everyone is taken care of. “I think everyone here really takes care of each other, and we love what this place has given to us,” she said. “We also really want to give that back to it.”

Yaseen: “Home. I’m lucky enough to have my home back in Egypt, my home in PA, and my home here in Manayunk. Bottle that up and make it into a flavor.” Dickey: You know when it’s like the end of winter, and you can smell the grass, and you’re like oh my god, it’s over? That - I would chug that year round.” Aubrey: “Do you know that feeling of being a kid when there’s a party going on outside your door and you can hear all the noise, but you’re cozy in your bed? I’d drink that!”

Kelly’s Story

Casey: “Philly. If I could put Philly into a cup, I would. I feel like it’d have both sweet and salty notes.”

Kelly Monahan started at Volo back in 2016 where she began training as a barista. She ended up moving away for some time but made her way back to Philadelphia and back to Volo. Cumulatively, she’s been with Volo for about four years.

Ali: “I love the smell of summer rain on hot asphalt. If I could take that scent and make it into a drink, that’d be the perfect summer thing.”

Kelly’s Choice Breve Pumpkin Cortado: Volo’s breve pumpkin cortado consists of espresso with a little bit of pumpkin and steamed half and half. Kelly chose this drink because it really showcases their espresso. She explained how you get the espresso you would in a latte but with less milk, so you can really taste the espresso flavor. 38

manayunk.com | Winter 2022-2023

Kelly: “The flavor of the year at DaVinci Gourmet is salted egg yolk. That is not an original creation, but I am dying to try it. So, salted egg yolk.”

Manayunk Makers

Highlighting a Few of the Many Local Creatives By Janine Gasarowski Having been in Manayunk for the past couple of years, there is no denying the creative spirit that takes over the neighborhood. The Philadelphia neighborhood once filled with numerous textile mills still exists as a community of creatives of all different mediums. Though the historic mills have been renovated, their artistic energy is still prominent. Whether I’m walking across town or driving down Main Street, there is a multitude of art that catches my eye. As a creative myself, I’m fascinated by others’ processes and the individualism of each creator. So, I wanted to gain an understanding of what it takes to be a creator and what it is like being an artist in Manayunk. Below are a few examples of artists who live and/or work in the 19127 and 19128 areas.

Season Evans “I love how you are able to push a traditional craft into a contemporary narrative.”

J

Season Evans, Contemporary Quilter

ust around the corner from the Manayunk Bridge entrance, you’ll find the studios of 30 local artists. Since 1990, the Mill Studios on Leverington Avenue has existed as a place for artists and crafters to indulge in their passions. The Mill Studios, once home to a textile factory, now holds many artists including textile and contemporary quilt artist, Season Evans. While most people picture quilts as antique patterned blankets, Season’s definition of a quilt is much broader than this. Though she taught herself the craft using traditional patterns, she used her creativity to eventually find her own voice. “I use quilts as objects and storytellers as a means to connect the stories of our everyday lives to contemporary craft,” Season said. Season makes heirloom quilts that can be used on a couch or a bed. However, she said her work often ends up being displayed on the wall as a canvas would. Season’s contemporary style comes from her many different inspirations, including her fascination with the relationship between concrete and fabric. “They are so different, yet similar,” Season said. The two rather opposite materials can have similar sensibilities. To Season, a pattern can be seen anywhere. Season published her own photography book displaying all of the concrete quilts she noticed in her surroundings. Patterns and compositions exist everywhere, some just do not notice what a creative like Season may be drawn to. Season’s inspiration often comes from her surroundings. The architecture of buildings and homes often fuels her creativity. “My work really centers around telling everyday stories,” Season said. “I often find that I walk around Manayunk and take pictures. I am inspired by the architecture and the community. “

Deb K. Simon Impressionism meets collagism

T

he Mill Studios is also where oil painter and collagist Deb Simon has created her work for the past 12 years.

Deb’s style of art is impressionistic. She often paints with oils but will incorporate collage work into her paintings by adding items like sheet music and maps to further explain the story behind each piece. There is no limit to Deb’s use of various mediums. Deb’s art allows the viewer to imagine the scene visually and audibly as well. She has a series of musician portraits that she creates while listening to the music genre that fits each piece. Whether it be rock, swing music, or jazz, one can see the passion and intent behind each painting. Deb said she loves watching people and painting their stories. In addition to her musician-inspired pieces, she has a series of portraits displaying active elderly adults. Her art shines light and beauty onto topics some may overlook. Deb shares her studio space with artist Nancy Freeman Tabas. The two creatives use their Manayunk community to their advantage. “Sometimes when we are stuck, we will take a walk down the canal, and that just feeds our creativity,” Deb said. “Having a studio space in such a lively and scenic small town illuminates artist block and fuels creation.” The nuances, visuals, and sounds of Manayunk influence their creative atmosphere and what they create. The atmosphere in the mill creates a community of artists of varying mediums. Deb curates the work for the collaborative gallery they have alongside Nancy and Marjie Lewis Quint. She is also a member and curator for ARTsisters, an organization of visual artists.

Louie Colella Luce Candles Scented wax meets modern sculpture

M

anayunk resident and local artist Louie Colella takes candle-making to a whole new level. Luce hand-poured candles amp up the atmosphere of any room they are placed in. “The Inspiration behind the candle shapes is interior design trends,” Louie said: “The reason I started making them is that when I moved here, I wanted to fill my house with cool, abstract candles.” What makes Luce candles unique is not only the shapes of the wax sculptures but their scents. “The scents I choose are very translatable,” Louie said. “Two people that don’t typically like the same thing usually end up liking them because they are pretty dynamic.” One of his signature scents is “Luna’’, which is a blend of vanilla and olivewood. “Luna smells like cashmere,” Louie said. What had started as a fun hobby to give him creative fulfillment outside of his full-time career quickly transformed into an ever-growing business. Louie had transformed the guest bedroom of his home into a studio space to make this passion possible. “The first day I made them I called my mom to tell her I made five candles,’ ’ Louie said, “now I can make 100 in one day.” Luce Candles launched just one year ago and is now being sold online and in six stores - including two local shops. You can find Luce at LILA Philadelphia on Main Street and Poppy and Bean in Roxborough. Living in Manayunk had a big contribution to the launch of Luce. The Colella family immigrated from Italy to the 19127 neighborhood. Louie grew up right across the bridge in Bala Cynwyd, he now lives right in the heart of Manayunk. “Manayunk inspired me to start something because everything around here is so colorful and vibrant and the people here are so energizing,” Louie said. “It gave me confidence and opportunity.”

Stephen & Rebecca Ebner Manayunk Timber “Woodworking is lifelong. It is a lifelong learning craft”

M

-R ebecca Ebner, Woodworker & Manayunk Timber Manager

anayunk Timber exists as the only sawmill in Philadelphia. The lumber yard sits atop the Manayunk hills and offers sustainable, local lumber for custom work and restoration. Running the mill, you’ll find woodworker Stephen Ebner and his daughter Rebecca. “Wood is just a beautiful thing,” Steve said, “You just get hooked into something and that’s it.” Steve Ebner’s fascination with wood and creation turned into a family business that has been around for over three decades. From tables to cabinetry, sculpture, custom work, and more, the father-daughter & business partner duo pour their passion and expertise into each hand-crafted item. The Ebner family works strictly with local wood. The history of lumber is just as important as the craftsmanship of the art they create with it. Nearly every piece of wood is from Philadelphia; “the old wood all comes from Philadelphia mills who did different things - steel, cotton, and wood,” Steve said. “You name the building and we probably have the wood from it.” The beauty of the lumber is the story of it. Their specialty is working with old reclaimed wood, many pieces date back to the 1800s. The locally-sourced lumber and trees allow the city’s history to be a part of the modern day. Shopping for a piece of custom furniture is unlike the regular home decor shopping experience, especially with Manayunk Timber. “People often make a whole day out of coming here,” Stephen said. “They spend hours looking for the exact piece of lumber they want to use and spend their lunch break picnicking on the property.” Buying custom work from local artists is an intimate experience that allows each step of the process to be personal to you. Rebecca Ebner’s love for the craft led her to get involved with her father’s company. The family’s passion for their work exists outside of the workday. Rebecca is using her knowledge and skills in wood to renovate and create pieces for her new home in MNYK. She is inspired by her dad’s enthusiasm for wood. The two have plans for Rebecca to eventually take over the company and carry out her dad’s legacy. Manayunk Timber sits at 5100 Umbria St.

Diane E. Vaughn - Soft Illusions Gallery Abstract Expressionism

T

he beautiful work of abstract expressionist artist Diane Vaughn and her art gallery, Soft Illusions Fine Art Gallery, has been a part of the Manayunk community for over a decade. “I come here every day,” Diane said. “I feel as if I don’t paint, something is missing.” When walking by Diane’s Main Street studio, the paintings on display in her window may stop you in your tracks. Soft Illusions is managed by Diane’s daughter and business partner, Malika. Malika grew up watching her mom paint every single day. She wanted to put her entrepreneurship skills to use and market her mother’s work to art lovers near and far. “I like to call it feel-good art,” Malika said. “It tends to give off a calming effect that people are drawn to.” Malika has witnessed people’s emotional reactions to seeing her mother’s work. People have walked into the gallery and experienced chills, and even shed tears. “How colors affect your mood is a science,” Diane said. Both Malika and Diane said that watching people’s responses to her paintings is very gratifying. Customers often see flowers in Diane’s paintings, though she says that is never her intent. Diane paints with feeling. She does not think in terms of floral, but how colors and composition work on the surface that she is working on. To her, art is music and painting is a dance. “I tell my mom she dreams in color,” Malika said, “it is amazing to see a blank canvas transform into her work.” Soft Illusions’ pieces can be found on display in homes, offices, and large-scale hotels, though the upscale environment of the gallery can be brought to any location. Sharing Diane’s art is important to Malika, so the two sell products that are more accessible to a larger audience as well as Diane’s original paintings. The Soft Illusions Collection consists of small accessories such as pillows, mugs, calendars, hand-painted cards, hand-embellished prints as well as original works of art on both paper and canvas. Art lovers are always welcome to visit Soft Illusions Fine Art Gallery at 4226 Main Street or online at softillusions.net.

Ruth Easterbrook RE Ceramics Functional Art

R

uth Easterbrook turns everyday, functional items into decorative artwork. She used pottery to enhance everyday life. “I like to think my work can make your day better,” Ruth said. “It is a way to add art to your daily life.” Ruth moved all the way from California to Roxborough to fulfill a Philadelphia artist residency. Though her work is at The Clay Studio in Center City, she preferred the community of the city neighborhoods to make her home. “I was searching for a neighborhood that would fit the feel of who I am,” Ruth said. “So I moved to Roxborough.” To her, the benefits of the community here outweighed the benefits of living close to the studio. Ruth’s daily routine includes walks down to Main Street Manayunk and on the Wissahickon park trails. The combination of urban and botanical life is prominent in her work. Being in the city she finds her work has more geometric structure, but the botanical surroundings influence the designs on her pieces. As her designs change with the seasons, one can see just how the local greenery influences the floral elements she paints onto her pottery with glaze. While Ruth’s pottery focuses on everyday items, like pots and mugs, she recognizes the emotional connection one can have with a piece. Ruth understands that a physical item can hold much more meaning beyond the original intention of the product. “Cups are such intimate objects, they have more of a personal connection,” Ruth said. “People often have cups that they don’t want anyone else to use.” Despite the level of practicalness among her pieces, Ruth highlights the need for decorative functionality in everyday life: “I want my work to have a level of beauty and feel inviting. I want it to be welcoming”. It’s one thing to have just a coffee mug, and another to have flowers budding at your fingertips while you take a sip. For Ruth, it’s the latter.
