We’re Getting Lit in Manayunk! …No, not that kind of getting lit… By Leo Dillinger

manayunk.com | Winter 2021
T
he term “Getting Lit in Manayunk” has taken on a brand new meaning in 2021 as a series of lighting installations brightened our community in the last year.
New Main Street Pedestrian Lighting Starting back in February 2021 and recently completed this November, Main Street’s $4.29 Million Streetscape Project completely transformed the district’s appearance. Featuring the installation and illumination of brand new Victorian-style pedestrian streetlights, the center of Main Street’s commercial corridor is now brighter than ever before. In addition to new lighting and the removal of the old lighting fixtures, this months-long project also included brand new paving along the entire length of Main Street as well as Shurs Lane between Ridge Avenue and Main Street, improved pedestrian crosswalks and bump outs with flashing beacons, and ADA ramps. This work could not have been done without the tireless work from Ramos & Associates Contractors, Armour & Sons Electric Inc., Michael Baker International, James J Anderson Construction Inc., and the City of Philadelphia’s Streets Department.
Illuminating the Manayunk Bridge Ever since the Manayunk Bridge Trail first opened to pedestrians and cyclists back in 2015, the trail could only remain open during daylight hours due to a lack of sufficient lighting on the bridge between dusk and dawn, especially during the winter months. But all of that is going to change with a project that broke ground in October 2021. Winter 2021 | manayunk.com

New pedestrian lighting and security cameras will sit atop the iconic Manayunk Bridge come early 2022! This $1.5 Million capital improvement, funded by the City of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, will ensure the bridge trail can stay open at all times to commuters and recreational users moving forward. This project would not be possible without the lead contracting from Miller Brothers Electrical Contractors and community partnerships with Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, Lower Merion Township, and the Manayunk Development Corporation. In addition to the pedestrian lighting, the Manayunk Special Services District installed LED projection uplighting along the arches of the bridge back in July. This $70,000 project made possible from GWA Lighting allows the bridge to get lit up in a variety of colors and lighting displays that can be changed to celebrate different holidays. Although the wrath of the flooding from Hurricane Ida on September 2 damaged the hardware, the MSSD expects the bridge uplighting to be repaired by the end of 2021.
“Get Lit in Manayunk” Lighting Contest After the success of 2020’s “Manayunk Gets Lit” contest, Main Street is doubling down and making the neighborhood light up even more for the 2021 holiday season. Manayunk businesses have decked out their storefronts with festive lights and decorations and are looking for visitors and residents to cast their votes for the best displays in each category, including “Best Decorated Door,” “Most Lit,” “Best Decorated Window Display,” “Most Original,” and “Most Spirited Block.” Guests are encouraged to visit Manayunk throughout the holiday season, which kicks off with our Tree Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, November 18th and Small Business 10

What Makes a Home,
A Home?
Manayunk has evolved many times over the last few decades, but the last 10 years might be the most significant yet. By Noel Bartocci Photography by Leo Joseph Photography (leojosephphotography.com)
What makes a home, a home? One’s understanding of “home” is as definable as love, fear, or musical preference — nebulous and sometimes fleeting. Specifics about what makes a home a home can vary wildly from person to person, making the notion of a home (that is not explicitly a building) in a constant state of flux, or more so in consistent need of balance — remove one factor, and it can all fall apart. Despite the inconsistency of people’s definition, common themes do reveal themselves when they discuss what makes a home, e.g. comfort, familiarity, safety, convenience, and love. These are concepts that don’t have an applicable, mathematical equation to figure out or are even tactile by nature, but ones of which you can’t deny being real. Home is something you just know when you feel it. In this article, I’d like to explore the question, “What makes Manayunk a great home?” Considering that’s impossible to answer for anyone else, I’m more accurately going to talk about what makes Manayunk a great home for me. Maybe along the way, you just might agree.
You live in Manayunk, but your address says, “Philadelphia” … I don’t get it. When I’m talking to family outside of Pennsylvania, it’s easy to just say, “I live in Philly.” It’s technically accurate and saves me from delivering the overly complicated spiel about Philadelphia being a “city of neighborhoods,” that we don’t have a “downtown” (it’s Center City), and how you can travel just a few blocks and have a completely different experience. But for anyone familiar with the area and/or resides closer to Center City, they say, “Oh, you live in Manayunk — that’s not really Philly.” While some may consider this logistical and subjective “correction” a slight, I find it to be a point of pride. I mean, they aren’t wrong. While Manayunk proudly displays the shared, foundational culture of Philadelphia, we still maintain a specificity all our own. We’re a little more art obsessed and have a little more of a neighborhood vibe. We’re a little more community based and a little more small business supported. Sure, this unique alchemy of attributes is built upon a common foundation of “Philadelphia-strong,” but supports its own identity and interpretation of the notion, turning it into something truly special. “I wasn’t entirely prepared for the enormity of the street events here in Manayunk.“ You gotta start somewhere. A new job brought me to Manayunk over 10 years ago. I was single, still in my 20’s, and making all the kinds of mistakes a single, young professional is expected to make—eschewing healthy routines, living paycheck-to-paycheck, and indulging in heavy late-night meals and high ABV craft beers. For that version of me, Manayunk had everything I always wanted. An early stand out was (and continues to be) Lucky’s Last Chance, a go-to for welcome indulgence, both between buns and/or in a pint glass. More impressive and welcoming, though, was the aesthetic and staff, both honest and grounded. It was effortlessly charming.
upon our routines, which eventually start to overlap with others’ habits and shifts. A genuine familiarity set in and before I knew it, and without even intending it, I started to adopt “spots,” or “haunts.” I knew which restaurants were the busiest and when. Where to park and when to move my car. What pubs to avoid on what nights. Even where to watch a football game that doesn’t involve the Eagles (blasphemy, I know). Essentially, all the things that aren’t listed in a brochure. These little details and points of comfort were what initially made Manayunk my home. But it didn’t end there.
Coupled with the food and tap list being top notch made frequent visits a no-brainer. Many a night I’d bring a notebook and or a stack of comics and post up at the end of the bar. The

the shuffle of glasses and soft cacophony of voices, underpinned by someone’s excellent Spotify playlist might as well have been my heaven. My first apartment was on Main Street, a stone’s throw from my office and around the corner from The Couch Tomato, which ended up being a daily lunch spot. I remember thinking that my life couldn’t get any more convenient. Food, drinks, work, and a nightlife where I can be amongst like-minded individuals. Sure, I didn’t own living room furniture yet, but I was content in ending a few evenings a week atop a barstool with a book or a notepad, getting to know my community. That one-bedroom apartment served me very well for nearly seven years. Not only did I eventually acquire furniture, but I also became a common face around town. By sheer force of consistency, I met more and more people. A bartender, a server, a shop-keep, a building owner, a neighbor, a dog and their fur-parent, etc. As people, we naturally stumble

I just needed to find the proper incentive to start. Around this time, I had stumbled upon the opportunity to write an article with this very magazine. I had already been considering stepping out of my comfort zone and trying one of the gyms around town, so why not make a respectful spectacle of it? I pitched a series of articles/reviews in which I would struggle through various gym classes and document the experience from the perspective of a beginner. Scratch that, lower than a beginner — more like a reluctant, but positive and willing, participant. If I did well, it’s a success and if I did poorly, it a humorous experience to write about. The goal was to illustrate that if I could do it, anyone could do it. It was through this shameless endeavor to get some free classes that I fell deeper into affection for the community.

For the nearly seven years since that first set of articles (one in which I even busted my face open on a treadmill), I still frequent the amazing classes and instructors at gyms like The Wall Cycling Studio, Rowzone, Never Give Up Training, and Goals Fit, just to name a few. That’s not even counting some of the great yoga studios in town like Unity Yoga and Hotbox Yoga, where I’ve struggled (but in a good way). The various Main Street events throughout the years (the StrEAT Food Festival, Manayunk Arts Festival, Stroll the Street, Out & About in MNYK, etc.) can only be described as a cross between a block party and a festival. Nothing prepared me for living on Main during that first, street-closed Sunday event (not all celebrations close Main St, but the ones that do tend to turn out the larger crowds). I walked out my front door expecting some extra foot traffic on the sidewalks, but what I found were crowds of people filling the road, hopping from vendor to vendor. Opulence, exotic eats, beverages, knick-knacks for sale, and smiling faces as far as the eye could see. Live music in the distance and local wares always on sale. What makes the street events even more inclusive are the brick-and-mortar shops and restaurants joining in and expanding their storefronts out into the street for a day or two. Just as much as I am still that 20-something looking for a hip bar, I’m also the nearly 40-year-old homeowner who walks to the Pretzel Park Farmers Market every Saturday morning with my wife. Both versions of Manayunk (and myself) co-exist, peacefully. I don’t have to switch between different personas just to function or fit in around here, because like me (and many, many, many others), this neighborhood has layers. If you’d have asked a younger me, when I first moved here, where I’d be in 10 years, I would not have answered, “Just a few blocks from this apartment.” But I like to think that Manayunk has been growing up along with me… or have I been growing up along with Manayunk? The lines are just too blurred to know for sure whether the community has met me where I am over the years, or that my adoration for it has prompted me to follow where it leads.

Just say, “hey.” On any given day, you may run into us strolling along the towpath, in line at Volo, or flipping through the new records at Main Street Music. You might catch us enjoying brunch at Winnie’s, picking up takeout at Taqueria Amor, grabbing a bottle of wine at Jake’s Cooper’s, or debating over which flavor of ice cream to share at Tubby Robot. You’ll see me picking up new comics at Johnny Destructo’s Hero Complex on Wednesdays and the two of us Strolling the Street on the Thursday nights we’re free. Bottom line — this is our home, and we support it, love it, and take the time to really live in it. So, when you see us out and about, say ‘hello,’ because we’re basically neighbors.

Deciding to go into business nearly two decades ago had a lot to do with Michael Cassano, CEO of The Couch Tomato Restaurant Group, and his business partner, Craig Mosmen, living in Manayunk. “We had just graduated college, and we were always hanging out,” Michael said. “And anytime we wanted to grab something quick, the quick-casual concept was not in the area yet.” Right out of the gate, Manayunk welcomed Craig and Michael’s budding business with a hungry belly, open arms, and a craving for food that made them feel good. “People were like, ‘This is exactly what this area needed,’ ” Michael said. “There’s something to be said about what Manayunk has to offer.” The Couch Tomato was the first in their “family” in a sense. They have a second location in West Chester, with a third planned for Conshohocken in 2022. “Manayunk will always be our first. It’s home because of that,” Michael said.
stereotypes, but it’s matured alongside The Couch Tomato’s growing demand for healthy, organic, and dietary restriction-friendly food. Nowadays, the business partner friends have their own families and a renewed perspective compared to nearly 20 years ago. “We’ve evolved our menu quite a bit to not only meet the demands of the street but also to an extension of how we eat at home,” Michael said. “We like our kids to eat healthy. We try to eat a lot of vegetables and fruit, and organic when we can do that.” There are plenty of places to grab a slice of pizza or a burger, it’s true. But, there are few places where you can get tacos made of hearts of palm that resemble a fish taco, Michael said. “We were trying to be an extension of how we eat, but at the same time, we felt like there was a void in this neighborhood we could capitalize on. I would like to think that we are not doing anything differently except listening to our customers,” he said. Winter 2021 | manayunk.com 29

Products are either locally sourced or organic and prepped that day. The quality is always fresh, Michael said, adding that they do not have huge walk-ins.
About seven years ago, a customer suggested a gluten-free pizza. Michael and Craig did a little research and discovered the need for people living with dietary restrictions – not just a fad diet. Since there were few options in the area, they developed a proprietary recipe, which Philadelphia Magazine recognized. Word got out, and the masses caught on. Listening to customers is an essential part of owning a business in general, he said. That’s especially true in this neighborhood, bubbling with so many different interests and desires.
Pivot! Pivot! That evolution has helped the restaurant grow, despite the pandemic. Michael attributes their success to their newly launched mobile app, released in January 2020. It just so happened that much of the globe shut down two months later. “We didn’t have to pivot to change everything we were doing to make ends meet,” Michael said. “We had that infrastructure in place to see what was ahead of us. Of course, no one could have predicted what the future held, but they were positioned to utilize their already-popular pickup and delivery options. They also began using contactless menus. Home delivery has been an option since 2003, “but the idea of The Couch Tomato wasn’t about bringing food to your couch. It was about having a cozy dining experience – somewhere people can feel like it is a neighborhood spot,” Michael said. There were some Fridays during the pandemic that were busier than they were pre-pandemic, he said. But that would not be possible without the supportive Manayunk community stepping up to order food with kindness and patience for the resilient staff. “A lot of places didn’t make it, and I feel very fortunate,” Michael said.
Something for Everyone Even if you haven’t been to Manayunk in a while, or you just moved up the hill to Roxborough, visiting The Couch Tomato feels like coming home. Walk into limited cozy seating and the pizza and salad counter. Head upstairs to the Bistro, and you’ll find a rustic dining area with brick-exposed walls, ambient lighting, and a bar. “It’s a place where you can feel good about what you’re eating and where you’re spending your money,” Michael said. 30

They have developed a concept leaning into “cleaner” food and trying to be ahead of the curve regarding the type of food available in Manayunk, Michael said. It can be tough to balance finding one restaurant to suit the needs of everybody in a group or even a couple. While one person might be vegan, their significant other may not be. Michael said their goal has always been to fill that gap. “Something for everyone has always been our motto,” he said. And although it can be a labor of love, Couch lends itself well to people with diverse dietary needs. Products are either locally sourced or organic and prepped that day. The quality is always fresh, Michael said, adding that they do not have huge walk-ins. All biases aside, Michael said he feels pretty good about what he just ate when he steps away from eating at Couch. “I feel like it was a healthy meal. I feel content. It’s not heavy or greasy. It’s not anything you’d get from a typical pizzeria. It’s a nice experience that will make you feel good after you’re done,” he said. There are some new items on the menu, including a signature Margherita pizza that might just be the best pie yet. The sauce is richly flavored. For the colder months, patrons can look forward to their signature daily soup specials. The tomato basil bisque paired with their grilled cheese is a fan favorite – and one of mine. There’s No Place Like Manayunk Where Urban Living Meets Small Town Charm By Brian Anderson Photos by Melissa Kelly Photography (melissakellyphotography.com)

mon in the neighborhood. Even with renovations and upgrades, those details are preserved and maintained.
And for so many of us, it’s where we call home. While guests will always be attracted to Manayunk, there are still many that truly call this neighborhood home. The people that help us find homes in Manayunk have a deep appreciation and passion for all the properties of 19127, too. Christine Ertz, a realtor with Compass and the MyPhilly.House team — and Manayunk homeowner — is passionate about helping clients buy homes in Manayunk. In many ways, the neighborhood sells itself. “A lot of people say they rent here, they buy here and they get sucked into the community — in a good way” Ertz said. “There are so many good ways to get involved in the community. Manayunk has a really good sense of community and neighborhood.” And while it’s certainly true that Manayunk is a neighborhood where communities thrive, there’s more to the story. With more than 100 years of history, there are hidden gems
“There are amazing contractors who take care of houses in this neighborhood,” she said. “If they can’t preserve a house’s character, they add to it.” What advice does Ertz have for people looking to buy in Manayunk? First, get offline. “Don’t go to those home buying websites,” she said. She also recommends getting a referral. Your realtor should really know the area, which gives you more information about buying in Manayunk or further up the hill. They’ll know the upsides (like the neighborhood hangouts and the pocket parks) and downsides (unfortunately, the parking woes so many of us have experienced) and can help you make better choices in your search. A website search may give you dozens of homes to look at, but a realtor will show you the neighborhood and what makes this area a joy to live in. And if you want a realtor that loves dogs, Ertz could be for you (just search for her on Instagram and you’ll find her adorable puppet, Phin).

Apparel Nicole Miller - Manayunk (4249 Main St) The. Dress. It’s the first thing wedding guests notice when they see a bride walk down the aisle. It should be the perfect “marriage” of your personal style and the aesthetic of your wedding day. In Manayunk, Nicole Miller - Manayunk has you covered. “When you think of a tree, what do you think of?” asked Mary Dougherty, co-owner of Nicole Miller - Manayunk. “It’s not a trick question. You might think of a pine and I think of a spruce, but it’s still a tree. So, when someone comes in looking for a wedding dress, everyone has a different idea.” The first thing Mary and her partner, Jillian Dunn, will have brides do when they come in for wedding dress tryons is fill out a survey. In that survey, brides will fill in when their wedding day is, how many guests they’re inviting, where the wedding will be held, and more. This gives Mary and Jillian a good idea of what dresses to pull when their brides arrive at the upstairs bridal section of the store on the corner of Main and Rector Streets. The dress featured in the photos is called “Mia” and is a true Nicole Miller classic - made of ivory metal taffeta with a twist knot neckline and a fishtail train. The style is about 10 years old. “Wedding dresses, in particular, kind of never go out of style,” Mary said. “A lot of people who have bought it are architects or are getting married in places like the beach. It’s just a little funkier. All of Nicole’s bridal designs were collection-inspired, so usually it was a dress in the line and made it into a wedding dress using a fabric that was more luxurious but kept to the simplicity of her designs.” With many brides rescheduling or reconsidering their wedding plans due to the pandemic, Nicole Miller - Manayunk is a great choice for those last-minute changes. They’re not a boutique that orders one size dress for all brides to try on. They’ll order all sizes so their brides can get a true sense of what they’ll look like on their wedding day. “These days, we have brides deciding they’re getting married next week, we have brides that are changing their whole wedding, and we have brides who hate their dress because they bought it two years ago,” Mary explained. “We can - if it’s in stock – have your dress in six weeks.” Admittedly, brides can be tough throughout the lengthy process of choosing “the dress,” but for Mary and Jillian, there’s something special about being a part of their big day. perfect destination for all kinds of brides to shop for their wedding day accessories. “We tell our customers to browse and try on the jewelry pieces they are interested in,” said Lynda Berdin, owner of Ilumine’ Gallery. “We have a 14 day return policy as long as the jewelry is unworn.” Lynda carries everything from sterling silver to rose gold and 14 and 16 karat gold overlay jewelry in her affordable line, and also carries higher end solid gold and small diamonds as well. Designers she carries include La Kaiser, Five and Two, Bopbe, Jaxkelly, Bu, Vera Wolf, Lanna, Jack and G, Anzie, Kozakh, Rachael Hatala, Alex Monroe, and Colleen Mauer. A little - or a lot - of sparkle never goes out of style for brides of all kinds, according to Lynda. “More glitter and bigger statement pieces are requested more by bridal customers,” she explained. To style the bride pictured, Lynda went with sleek accessories to accent the Nicole Miller dress, using a paired set of earrings and a necklace by London-based designer, Ania Haie. Both pieces are 14 karat yellow gold vermeil with cubic zirconia baguettes that will catch any wedding guest’s eyes. Lynda paired the accessories with a simple gold chain bracelet. Besides classic jewelry pieces ideal for any bride, Lynda has also pulled inspiration from galleries she previously owned in Albuquerque by offering work from Native American jewelers like Alex Sanchez, Fernando Bennaly, and Stella Naranjo. stop talking about any time soon - in a positive way! “We love to see couples’ creative cake dreams come to life!” said Meagan Benz, co-owner of Crust Vegan Bakery. “We can also create a pretty bangin’ dessert spread, which is hard to come by in the area. We are trying to fill the gap and make food that vegans and non-vegans alike will enjoy!” The Main Street bakery will be especially appealing to health-conscious couples who like to keep things local, which Crust Vegan Bakery has a real knack for. All of their ingredients are free from any chemicals and are bought from other local small businesses in the area. The bakery’s team is the definition of “attention to detail” from start to finish. Not only is every cake unique to the client, but each couple is assigned a point person, who they’ll work with from start to finish. “By working with them directly very thoroughly throughout the entire process, I never pass them onto someone else to sort out details,” Meagan said. “I walk them through it every step of the way to make sure they are getting exactly what they want and to ensure we are all on the same page the whole way through!” Brides and grooms often use Crust Vegan Bakery for their high-quality tiered cakes and dessert spread options, which includes their popular pop tarts. They also offer cake and dessert stand rentals for your special day. “We aren’t booking new weddings until January 2022, but at that time, clients will inquire through our website to book a wedding tasting with us and chat details,” Meagan explained. There’s nothing quite like looking back on all of the memories from your wedding day for years to come. Manayunk’s very own JPG Photo & Video is one of the most experienced in the business. “We’ve spent the past 17 years capturing moments that matter to everyday people,” said Joe Gidjunis, owner of JPG Photo & Video. “JPG Photo & Video comprises our group of award-winning photographers who focus on documenting moments without intruding on an event. We push creative boundaries and provide strong visuals that tell your story with care. We use our skills, humor and sense of adventure to capture emotion and document
moments you never want to forget. We refuse to be boring and truly care about telling your story.” Joe started shooting weddings in 2004 when his cousin asked him to document their wedding. Joe had been a photojournalist for a local newspaper at the time, so his cousin trusted he knew what to do. “I agreed, but it was definitely one of those things I did because I love my family,” Joe joked. “By the end of the wedding though, I was hooked! I was surprised by how much fun a wedding could actually be.” Joe credits this experience as being the eye-opener to the business he needed. His prior idea of wedding photography consisted of stiff and very posed brides and grooms, but quickly realized all of the fun and emotions that were captured that day, especially from family and friends of the newlyweds. Since weddings are such an intimate day, Joe and his team give top notch customer service and listen to what potential clients want right from the jump. “Some vendors treat every wedding the same, but we know that couples have different desires and priorities when it comes to their day,” Joe said. “We make sure we talk to them throughout the process, from booking to delivery, to deliver what they want from photo and video.” Ater an initial inquiry call or email, we send you our pricing guide as well as information as to important dates in the booking process and what you can expect from us leading up to the wedding date and delivery of photos and video,” he continued. “You’ll then have a phone call with our studio director to confirm a rough timeline, how many hours you need, and just talk about what you’re excited for! After that, you have a phone call with your photographer to ask them any specific questions. Once all that is confirmed, you’ll sign a contract, pay a retainer, and be booked!” And for our local couples, you might want to consider JPG Photo & Video for your day. Joe and his team love shooting Manayunk, a place they’re extremely familiar with. “We love the backgrounds and textures that can be found for portraits, and we love that it’s an art focused district committed to supporting their small businesses,” Joe said. e asked, and you answered! Millennials, empty-nesters, and recent college grads alike all responded to our call when we asked what our readers love about living in Manayunk. The answers varied, from the trails, to the locally-sourced food and beer, and the personal relationships with neighbors. Here’s what our readers had to say.
“My husband and I call it our little mountain town with a big city zip code. It’s funny, I didn’t grow up here, but I’ve never felt more at home anywhere I have lived. This being the most densely populated place, we always get small town vibes bumping into people we have met, whether just out for a walk, at the park, or on a hike. You really get to know your neighbors and they become like family.” - Morgan, age 28, resident for 3 years

“We have many favorites here, obviously. Manayunk Tavern is our favorite “corner pub” spot for great food, cheap drinks, and friendly staff- and possibly the best location for peoplewatching on Main Street on the corner. We always take a stroll down Main and visit some of our favorite shops: the Little Apple is always fun to stop in for fun gifts, and so is Latitudes & Longitudes. If it’s the weekend, we’ll definitely browse the Farmer’s Market at Pretzel Park on Saturdays. And lately, renting an electric bike from Pedego on Main has been a really fun way to explore the Towpath/SRT or go into the city.” - Zach & Hugh, age 30, residents for 4 years Winter 2021 | manayunk.com 47

“Some of my favorites include brunch at Winnie’s, drinks by the river at Manayunk Brewing Company, and burgers at Lucky’s Last Chance.” - Karen, resident for 48 years
“I love the sense of community here. I also love all there is to do and the convenience of being able to walk everywhere.” - Bethany, age 37, resident for 11 years

“There is something for everyone — not just college kids. The sense of community is unrivaled. “ - Sam, age 37, resident for 4 years
“Manayunk is unlike any other Philadelphia neighborhood we have ever lived in. It’s a place where, no matter how long you’ve lived here, you instantly feel connected to your community. Neighbors get to know one another here and it makes it feel like home, no matter if you’re a renter or a homeowner.” - Kait, age 29, resident for 3 years; Rory, age 30, resident for 7 years

“We like to go for a walk along the canal and the pedestrian bridge to Lower Merion, bar crawl to some of our favorite restaurants on Main Street, try to go to the farmers market on the weekend, and hit up Crust Vegan Bakery for some baked goods.” - Donald, age 30, resident for 5 years
“There’s nothing better than hopping on the towpath and following it to Main Street, and bumping into friends along the way!” - Glynis, age 30, resident for 3 years 50

“It’s filled with friendly neighbors and easily accessible activities. Everything from going out to dinner, clothes shopping, doing a grocery run, and enjoying the park is just a short walk away.” - Jamie, age 31, resident for 8 months
“My husband and I moved from the suburbs when we became empty nesters. We never had a chance to speak to some of our neighbors because they drove right into their garages. I used to ride my bike on the sidewalk because there weren’t any pedestrians. In contrast, we have met so many friendly people (some of whom have become friends) while they were playing banjo on their porch or grilling pulled pork for the Eagles game or out walking their dogs and in the mood for conversation.” - Sheryl, age 60, resident for 1 year Winter 2021 | manayunk.com 51
