THE POTENTIAL OF URBAN DEGRADATIONS FOR THE PUBLIC USE OF GREEN SPACES: THE CASE OF ABANDONED CONSTRUCTION SITES IN LJUBLJANA / 2017 academic work / master thesis / mentor / dr. prof. Mojca Golobič Nowadays the city of Ljubljana faces many dormant or even abandoned construction sites that are only being enclosed by fences for advertisement purposes and are ‘waiting’ for a brighter future with a better economic situation for the investors. Even though they are a persistent urban problem, they also have the potential for the future development of the city. The purpose of the thesis was to evaluate the abandoned construction sites for their potential for the public use of green spaces. The master thesis introduces a general overview of a contemporary urban development by examining the case of the urban development of Ljubljana. In the broader context it tries to define specific causes and the dynamics of the urban development of Ljubljana that lead to urban degradations, i.e. abandoned construction sites. The thesis also offers an overview of local and foreign cases of temporary uses in terms of quality temporary solutions for abandoned construction sites. The empirical part of the thesis consists of a selection of the abandoned construction sites in Ljubljana and analyses their potential for the public use of green spaces. In order to analyse their potential, we developed a set of criteria taking into account the main functions and parameters that most importantly contribute to the quality of green spaces. The areas were evaluated based on the five-point grading scale and ranked according to their potential for the public use of green spaces. Some of the abandoned construction sites with the most potential, according to our criteria, are: the abandoned construction site of the project Celovški dvori, Bežigrajski dvor, the abandoned construction site by the Masarykova road and the abandoned construction site by the Šmartinska road. The thesis concludes with the conceptual proposals for the four areas that have the most potential for the public use of green spaces.

BOARDGAME KONCI IN KRAJI / 2014 *competition entry / http://sarasnovak.wix.com/konciinkraji / award for 2nd place / national ECLIC competition / participation of Sara Novak / mentor / Nadja Penko Seidl The base for this project is a simple boardgame, which allows the players to become familiar with the spacial problems in Slovenia and have fun at the same time trying to solve them. The players are playing a role of a spacial planner, whose job is to manage and resolve the tasks that are put before them. The content of the game is based on a book called Regionalna razdelitev krajinskih tipov v Sloveniji - Regional landscape types in Slovenia - by prof. D. Ogrin, prof. dr. J. Marušič and others. It is also based on the results of a six months project called Changes in settlement patterns and it’s influence on cultural landscape - evaluation of processes and guidelines for development and conservation lead by prof. dr. M. Golobič from Department of Landscape Architecture in Ljubljana. *The E-CLIC project develops a creative methodology of raising awareness about European policies of preservation of the

European landscapes by involving young people in particular in the better comprehension and assessment of these policies.

CHANGES IN SETTLEMENT PATTERNS AND IT’S INFLUENCE ON CULTURAL LANDSCAPE EVALUATION OF PROCESSES AND GUIDELINES FOR DEVELOPMENT AND CONSERVATION IN KOBJEGLAVA AND TUPELČE / SLOVENIA / 2013 / 2014 academic work / typology, conservation and management of cultural landscape / mentor / prof. dr. Mojca Golobič In the project I evaluated the basic characteristics of the settlement in the villages Kobjeglava and Tupelče (carst landscape region), defined types of degradations and proposed a plan for remediation. The seminar was based on understanding the traditional settlement patterns in different landscape regions in Slovenia. It was also based on its changing and influence on cultural landscape. The traditional settlement pattern and the field distribution have always been adapting to natural characteristics of the space and throughout time of continuous land use they created the phenomenon called ‘traditional cultural land’. This is how the typical slovenian carst villages are constructed; closely build together against the strong mediterranean wind. Facades with small windows or even without them accompanied with narrow streets and courtyards offering shelter. At first glance it may seem as a chaotic structure but in fact a well designed one over the years; adapt to natural topography and conditions. The changes that have appeared in the last century have diminished the traditional settlement patterns; they have become homogenuous and came from foreign models of a settlement. This can be seen as well as in building methods, the usage of materials and most, in a spatial placement of the built. The new forms of activities which are also taking the space from agricultural ones. These changes are frequently evaluated as negative because they contribute to the loss of spatial identity and leads to people’s unattachment to their enviroment.

SPATIAL PROPOSALS FOR NEW NEIGHBOURHOOD SPORT PARK FESTIVAL AREA AND RIVER BANKS IN TOLMIN / SLOVENIA / 2013 / 2014 academic work / landscape architecture design studio 2 / participation of / Sara Novak / mentor / doc. Darja Matjašec Throughout the analyses it is evident that the river Soča has a massive potential in the surrounding areas. The scheme of the area is divided into three individual parts which as a whole are combining the green hinterland of the city Tolmin. With the new highway being proposed, this integrity is endangered of being lost and thus the connection of the river Soča with city Tolmin. The main idea of the concept is based on renowing the connections of river’s banks with the city throughout four choosen areas which have great potential and are still claiming the identity of the surrounding area of the river. The influence of the river is being manifested in spatial proposals as its greatest devastation and dynamics which can be found in the area. That is floods. By introducing new principals of designing the connections through the rivers greatest influence in the space - floods - lead to studying and discovering whole new meanings of identities which lay hidden in the area.

COMPETITION FOR HISTORIC TOWN CENTER RESTORATION IN ŠKOFJA LOKA / SLOVENIA / 2012 / 2013 competition entry / honorable mention / participated as part of a landscape architecture design team of 12 The project was a restoration of the medieval town center of Škofja Loka and its riverbanks. The project suggested a circular path through three levels of the medieval town center - castle, town and the riverbanks. The main idea was to connect the disconnected old town center with the surrounding city. Connection between old and new town parts of Škofja Loka town was made possible by renewed traffic structure, public spaces and parks, urban furniture and new housing was designed.

PROPOSAL FOR NEW URBAN GARDENS IN NOVA GORICA / SLOVENIA / 2013 academic work / landscape architecture design studio 1 / participation of / Sara Novak / Jose Vidal / Tiago Paulino / mentor / prof. dr. Davorin Gazvoda The new proposal of urban gardens is located on the south of the city Nova Gorica, in between the urban structure and forest Panovec. The scheme of the area consists the main path structured with the tree alley (Prunus) and different units of urban gardens. Near the entrance area (north-west) are located greenhouses and service facilities. The main path ends with catering facility (south-east) and the parking area. The proposal generalizes Ravnikar’s idea of a city; with orthogonal placement of the garden units (concept of a modern city Nova Gorica). The proposal also includes already established object in the area; glass factory (south) and opens new possibilities for public involvement with the factory.

Following Ravnikar’s principle of connecting the north and south of Nova Gorica through a traffic, in our concept we also intended to create a connection between these two regions, not through a road but as a green corridor. A connecting corridor between two forests that also function as a meeting point for people where the urban and rural (east and west) are joined together. All along the corridor we propose different programs according to the potentiality of each place. Each program can function as a separate activity; the corridor itself can be self-sufficient in that matter. The program within different areas can also provide a various types of urban gardening. For example, Green Center function as information center, service and management center and as a starting point for in-comers, tourists. Within this program, one can also have a type of urban garden in terms of green-houses or other indoor planting. All the other programs could function in the same matter.

SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF AGRICULTURAL LANDS IN NOVA GORICA / 2012 academic work / landscape architecture planning studio 2 / participation of / Živa Fink / Tjaša Vrhovnik / mentor / prof. dr. Mojca Golobič Agricultural lands in municipality of Nova Gorica are in constant battle for existance; the abandonment of farming is threatening to lose even the most valued cultural lands and therefore declining the possibility of having food self-sufficiency. The strategy was dividing agricultural areas into four different land use: orchads, vineyards, fields and grasslands. Later we valued spacial requirements for these different land uses - analyses consisted of valuating the characteristics of the space; terrain, type of the soil, exposition, insolation, altitude, forest areas, build objects and other infrastructure. We haven’t taken into account the actual land use for further defining the best agriculteral areas. We used 5 leveled assessment, where we took into consideration only the areas which had the best assessment; level 5 and were bigger than 1 hectar. For this project we used ArcGIS and Proval computing programs.

LJUBLJANA CITY CONNECTION WITH RIVER SAVA IN TOMAČEVO / 2012 / 2013 academic work / urban planning / participation of / Danijel Mohorič / Živa Fink / Tjaša Vrhovnik / mentor / doc. dr. Tatjana Capuder Vidmar The village Tomačevo is one of the most problematic areas; on the border of the urban tissue of city Ljubljana. Countless spatial difficulties are preventing development of activities in the village that would be beneficial for the locals and potential tourism. There is a inevitable connection of the village with other thread alike villages that spread along the river banks which have been evolving throughout the history by the river Sava and there is a threat of merging the urban city tissue with this rural area. The proposal contains various spatial arrangements which could maintain the identity of each village in this area. Further more, the proposal could enable the connection of the villages with the city Ljubljana and establish the mental convergence.

SPACIAL PROPOSALS IN RIBNICA / SLOVENIA / 2011 / 2012 academic work / landscape architecture studio 2 / participation of / Danijel Mohorič / Tjaša Vrhovnik / mentor / prof. dr. Ana Kučan / Joao Gomes da Silva The town Ribnica is well known for its historic center and church made by slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. Although it has its recognizable development and longitudinal shape, the town is overwhelmed with main traffic road dividing the town on north-east and south-west. The growth of a residential sprawl is even deepening the divison. With new traffic proposal, castel park, sport park and tourist’s residential area we designed a brighter future for the town.

The origins of the first street direction is from historical roman transportation and the second was build for Ljubljanas market necessities with Trieste (Italia). The concept represent these two systems as tectonic plates which collide into each other and transform the space as mountain have throughout the centuries. The idea was also of a man who sculpted this mass into his confortable enviroment. The proposal consists of three new buildings; sport center for climbing, gallery and a library.
