THE BOSS CALLS ON HIS REDS TO SHOW THEIR RUTHLESS NATURE IF WE’RE TO START IN THE CUP WITH VICTORY...

ello and welcome back to Leigh Sports Village for the first of two games here this week before attentions turn to Old Trafford, and our first Conti Cup game of the season. We come back to our home ground after a frustrating visit to Brighton on Sunday evening. The game serves as a reminder of how difficult the league can be and how we must ensure we score when we create so many chances. That said, I was really happy with the players’ attitude and commitment to the game but we have to be ruthless in both penalty areas. It’s something we are working on as a group. The Conti Cup offers the first chance for a trophy this season and we are taking the competition seriously. We always want to make the most of the opportunity to collect silverware and this is no different. We have one of the most difficult groups and so we know we will need to perform at our best in order to progress and get further than we did last season. We are looking forward to getting started in the competition. We have had some tough results in the league so far but we enter every game to win – that is the Manchester United way and that is something that will not change.
04-05_MUWFC_SKINNER-COLUMN (approved).CGIM.indd 1
We have statistically out-performed almost every team we have played this season but the results are not showing that at the minute. We have to learn from the games so far, we need to make sure we take our chances and we have to ensure we show a ruthless nature in order to make sure we progress in this competition. With the games coming thick and fast we have a great opportunity to utilise the squad and ensure the players are game-ready. We know that our opponents in the group will be really challenging – it’s a tough group – and that will hopefully bring the best out of our squad. We played Everton recently and put in a great performance at Walton Hall Park. Regardless of the excellent recent result I would expect a different game here, and we have to be ready to maximise our performance and make sure we secure the win. Brian Sorensen’s side are a team that plays a distinct style and can cause problems to any team they play. So we must play the game with the right intent and aggression, both with and without the ball, if we want to win. Enjoy the game.

WOMEN’S FIRST TEAM BUILDING
STEP INSIDE THE REDS’ NEW BASE... Marc Skinner’s squad have been enjoying the benefits of their new training base in recent weeks, after the multi-million-pound Women’s First Team building opened at Carrington. Construction started in February, with a state-of-the-art gym among the many new provisions, as seen in these photos. The development is part of significant ongoing investment to enhance facilities for all players, including the club’s Academy, at Carrington, as well as Littleton Road and The Cliff.

COUNTDOWN TO KICK-OFF
This season is the 13th edition of the competition
Following three games on the road, the Reds return to Leigh to take on the Toffees in our Group B opener...
09_CTKO.CGIM.indd 1
UNITED WOMEN
Nearly four weeks on from the Reds’ last LSV outing, against Leicester, Marc Skinner’s side are all set for our second triple-header of the season on home soil – one that ends at Old Trafford in the WSL, and begins here in Leigh tonight in the Conti Cup. It’s a competition we’ve had contrasting results in over our five previous campaigns – three semi-final berths, alongside two disappointing group-stage exits – but there’s no question it’s a trophy United would dearly love to win, as we seek a first piece of major silverware to sit alongside our 2018/19 Championship triumph. Our recent 5-0 WSL win against Brian Sorensen’s Everton should give Skinner’s squad real belief
heading into this one, but it hasn’t always been plain sailing against the Toffees, who were the only side other than Chelsea to deny us victory at home in any competition last season. And with Everton having lost their Group B opener, 2-1 to Manchester City six weeks ago, they’ll know the importance of picking up three points here if they are to harbour hopes of progressing from a heavyweight group. It’ll be intriguing to see Skinner’s starting XI, with changes from Sunday’s trip to Brighton highly likely, based on what we’ve seen in previous years in the Conti Cup, not to mention the visit of West Ham in just three days’ time. Could we see Phallon Tullis-Joyce make her bow in goal, or Evie Rabjohn debut in defence? And then there are others we’ve seen glimpses of, such as Gemma Evans and Irene Guerrero, who could be in line for a starting berth. And just as a reminder: if it’s all square at 90 minutes, both sides gain a point – then it’s straight to a penalty shoot-out to play for a bonus one.

CONTI CUP PREVIEW While tonight sees Marc Skinner’s Reds compete in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup – to give the tournament its rather prolonged full name – for the first time in 2023/24, most teams got their group-stage campaign under way last month, with the ultimate aim being to lift the trophy on Sunday 31 March next year. Involving sides from the WSL and Championship, this opening round is made up of five groups, all split geographically (two ‘northern’ groups, three ‘southern’ groups, with the Midlands teams sent one way or the other), and sides facing-off just once, rather than meeting home and away. Only the top team in each group is guaranteed progression to the quarter-finals, where they’ll be joined by the two best-ranked runners-up, alongside Chelsea – who received a bye from the group stage as a result of their involvement in the Champions League groups. Much like ourselves, Arsenal had aspirations of playing on the continent this month, but having been introduced into the Conti Cup groups following their European elimination, the Gunners have been placed into Group D, alongside Tottenham, Southampton, Reading and Bristol City – who Jonas Eidevall’s side host tonight at Meadow Park (7pm). Having lifted the trophy last season, Arsenal will be aiming for a fourth Conti Cup triumph (Chelsea lead the way with six, while Liverpool have two and Manchester City one). Elsewhere in Group D, Reading and Southampton

met last night – one of four Wednesday-evening fixtures, the most high-profile of which was Liverpool v Manchester City in our own group, which on paper looks like being the most competitive: five WSL teams, including a Manchester derby and a Merseyside derby, with in-form Leicester thrown in for good measure. By contrast, the other northern group consists of just one top-flight team, in Aston Villa, who have been paired with Durham (who we know very well from this cup, of course) as well as fellow Championship sides Sunderland, Blackburn and Sheffield United. Group C, meanwhile, is an all-Championship line-up of Crystal Palace, Lewes, London City Lionesses and Watford – who are enjoying life in the second tier after winning last term’s National League South. Group E is also made up of just four teams, where the expectation is that WSL sides Brighton and West Ham – who both won their opening games – will battle for top spot ahead of second-tier Charlton and Birmingham. Once the numbers have been whittled down to the final eight in the new year, it couldn’t be more straightforward: four quarter-finals, followed by two semis – all single-legged fixtures with one side drawn at home – before the showpiece, which in recent years has been played at Vicarage Road (2021), Plough Lane (2022) and Selhurst Park (2023). Could the final – and indeed the cup – be returning north in 2024? We shall see...

UNITED WOMEN
ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY: Williams is the Reds’ late saviour once again, as her 98th-minute back-post tap-in preserves our unbeaten record in WSL. THIRD DRAW IN FIVE: While a late goal to nick a draw is a far better feeling than a late concession to settle for a draw (see Arsenal at home in October), ultimately this one still felt like a missed opportunity, with WSL leaders Chelsea already four points ahead of us after five games played. FORMER REDS KEEP US OUT: With Sophie Baggaley in goal and Maria Thorisdottir in defence, there was a familiar look to the Seagulls’ rearguard, and Baggers especially was in top form to keep us out in the first half, flicking Hannah Blundell’s long-range effort on to the bar before reacting immediately to foil Millie Turner on the rebound.
MISSED CHANCES: For all Baggaley’s brilliance, we should have scored either side of Elisabeth Terland’s well-placed opener for the hosts – Geyse struck the post, Melvine Malard was denied as she tried to find Leah Galton close to goal, while Galton headed a chance of her own too high. TOONE STEPS UP: The Reds kept pushing, and on 78 minutes Ella Toone got the goal we were craving. And what a finish for her first of the season: a fine curled effort from the edge of the box. AGONY ON 89 MINUTES: We seemed to have the momentum at that point, only for Brighton to stun the Reds, as Guro Bergsvand rose to head home: 2-1. RACH TO THE RESCUE: With Mary Earps up for the corner, one last attack saw the ball drop for Williams at the far post to dramatically level. It meant our unbeaten league run extended to 12, while we’ve won six points from losing positions this term (more than any other side), but understandably Marc Skinner wanted more. “We need to take three points – you create that amount of chances, you’ve got to take them,” he said. “We need to take accountability and be better than that.”

ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY: Rout in the Merseyside sunshine gets Reds firmly back on track following four games without a win. FEWER OPTIONS: A sickness bug meant we started the game with just five outfield players on the bench, while the three changes in the starting XI from our away trip to PSG – Hinata Miyazawa, Lucia Garcia and Nikita Parris – all impressed, as did everyone, really, with Marc Skinner stating: “The girls were magnificent in both areas today.” PRE-GAME TRIBUTES: Ahead of the match, both sides paid respects to club legend Sir Bobby Charlton, a day after he passed away. GETTING OUR NOSES AHEAD: How nice it was to see us score the opening goal in a game for the first time this season – Melvine Malard’s 14th-minute header being the latest example of our no.9’s impressive alertness in the box. SECOND-HALF DOUBLES: While the Toffees would have their moments before the break, we were merciless as the contest went on, as braces from Parris (meaning she’s now scored eight in nine WSL games against her former side) and Rachel Williams (who barely bothered to celebrate!) made it 5-0 – our biggest-ever win against Everton. IRENE’S FINE ASSIST: It’s hard to single out one standout moment, but how we loved the sight of Irene Guerrero, just minutes after her 83rd-minute introduction for her debut, providing a perfectly weighted pass for Parris to lift the ball into the net.

Women’s Super League Leigh Sports Village, Sun 15 Oct ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY: Both teams continue unbeaten start in WSL, but Willie Kirk’s resurgent Foxes are left far happier with the point. APPEARANCE POINTERS: Mary Earps’s 100th game for the Reds also saw Gemma Evans make her debut as a second-half sub. SUNNY DAY, SUPER TURNOUT: Just under 5,000 were here at LSV, with half stripping down to T-shirts (West and North Stands), while the East and South kept their coats zipped right up. If only the sun could swap ends at half-time, eh... GABBY’S CRUEL INJURY: Just minutes into the game, Gabby George fell to the turf clutching her knee, and would be replaced by Jayde Riviere. Sadly for our new no.3, it was later confirmed that she’d torn an anterior cruciate ligament for the second time in her career. Get well soon, Gabs. FOXES STAND STRONG: Despite United bossing possession (64 per cent) and shots (20-4), Kirk’s well-drilled Leicester were worthy of a point, with keeper Janina Leitzig’s confidence between the sticks mirrored by the defenders in front of her. MAYA’S QUICK RESPONSE: A rare Leicester attack on the hour mark led to Aileen Whelan firing home at the back post, before the Reds hit back seven minutes later, as Maya Le Tissier swept in a header from Katie Zelem’s corner.

UNITED WOMEN
ONE-SENTENCE SUMMARY: Ruthless hosts show their quality – and ride their luck at times – at Parc des Princes to end our hopes of reaching the Champions League group stage. PARISIANS STRIKE FIRST AGAIN: Much like in the first leg the previous week, PSG struck first – this time via Lieke Martens, who would prove to be a thorn in United’s side all night. LISA LEVELS: In terms of importance, it’s been a while since a goal got us out of our seats quite like Lisa Naalsund’s equaliser at the start of the second half – her first Reds’ goal, from Geyse’s assist. Game on! Or so we thought... DOUBLE HAMMER-BLOWS: Seconds later, it was 2-1 PSG, as Martens struck again after being set up by Tabitha Chawinga. And soon after it was 3-1, as Sandy Baltimore scooped the ball over Mary Earps from a tight angle. Was it a shot, or a miscued cross? Who knows. Either way, we needed two with half-hour left. SO HARSH ON GALTON: With Lucia Garcia and Hinata Miyazawa introduced, the Reds threw caution to the wind, and when Leah Galton’s looping header found the net, a comeback seemed on... only for the ref to deem that Leah had pushed defender Clare Hunt in the back, when contact seemed minimal. With no VAR the decision stood, and it dented any realistic hopes of a fightback, with Ella Toone’s late strike against the post the closest we’d come. SKINNER’S VERDICT: “You have to be strong in one v ones, you have to take your personality to the game and in the first half we didn’t do that enough. Second half, we were much better.” Farewell, UWCL, hope to see you again soon – and hopefully for longer next time.

have five WSL teams in the group and that makes it extremely hard so we know that every game matters. We are definitely in the toughest group in the competition, and going forwards the format could be something that gets looked at, as I don’t think you should have five WSL teams in one North group, and one in the other. Nevertheless, we are looking forward to the challenge and it is always great hearing our fans. You were fantastic away at Brighton and while the crowd might not be quite as big tonight as it’s been for our WSL games, we know you’ll be right behind us from the first whistle.

fter a difficult trip to Brighton on Sunday it’s great to be back at home. We definitely felt like it was two points dropped but the quick turnaround means that we can immediately focus on getting back to winning ways. We now turn our focus to the Conti Cup and our first opponents in Group B are Everton. Last season we did not make it out of the group stages so we want to improve that this time around. We take every competition seriously. We want to win silverware, that’s what it’s about being at Manchester United. The Conti Cup is another opportunity to do that and we cannot wait to get started in the competition. We go into every game wanting to win. The mindset – whether it is the Conti Cup, FA Cup or league – is always to win. We beat Everton comfortably in the league a few weeks ago at Walton Hall Park but every game is different. I think there will be different players on the pitch and they might set up differently as well. Teams tend to rotate a lot in the Conti Cup so the games can be more unpredictable. We know how close the groups can be in the Conti Cup and especially with how difficult our group is. We

Katie Zelem, a graduate of the Girls’ Academy, laid a wreath in Sir Bobby’s honour away to Everton, ahead of what was the first women’s-team fixture after the passing of our club legend. Sir Bobby’s impact continues to be felt by girls in the Academy, too, with one playing a big role in the matchday activity to commemorate the life of the man who made an astounding 758 appearances for the club. Before the men’s team faced Manchester City last month, Manchester United Foundation

held a poignant tribute to remember Sir Bobby. As Foundation chief executive John Shiels laid a wreath by the Trinity Statue, he was helped by Under-12 player Eva and her brother Jayden, before they paused for a moment’s reflection. Sir Bobby was a great role model to Eva – who learned about his immense contribution to United with tales of his greatness from her dad. “I felt really honoured because I was one of the only people to do this,” Eva said. “It’s honestly great. Sir Bobby inspired me and that always made me want to be like him. He’s a proper role model.” Eva, a United-supporting central midfielder, was asked to form part of the tribute because of how she represents everything Sir Bobby stood for – embodying the values of Manchester United, possessing great talent and being a part of the Academy from a young age. Eva’s coach in the Academy, Jolene Murray, said: “Eva is a brilliant player and an even better person and team-mate. “She is a pleasure to coach and works so hard. This is so inspiring for her and her family, and something she’ll remember for the rest of her life.”

Nine days on from a solid debut from Mary, away to City, came an equally challenging opponent on her home bow, in the shape of Joe Montemurro’s reigning WSL champions. In front of a crowd of 2,530 (which seemed a lot at the time!) under the LSV lights, this was the night we were first treated to a Mearps masterclass; when it became clear why European heavyweights Wolfsburg were so keen to sign her from Reading the previous year, and Casey Stoney to recruit her as Siobhan Chamberlain’s replacement. With Vivianne Miedema back in the Gunners’ side, and Stoney’s Reds still finding their feet at this level, the visitors were firm favourites to get the win – and how they tried. First a double-save denied Miedema as Mary displayed rapid reactions. Kim Little could hardly contain her frustrations as our no.27 twice denied her from close range, before Mary pushed another Little strike over the crossbar. The champions would keep knocking on Mary’s door, and alas, they would finally bundle their way through on 89 minutes as Danielle van de Donk forced a bouncing ball home. It was so cruel on the whole team, but especially Mary on the back of seven saves, and following an identical scoreline at City, but she was looking at the bigger picture: “The way I feel is that if we put in these performances week in week out, we won’t be far off these teams in terms of points, and not just 1-0s on the day.” Our new purple-topped hero would be proved right.

We started 2020/21 with a major test as Emma Hayes’s Blues arrived in Leigh, kicking off an entire season of home fixtures played behind closed doors. Despite it being a first competitive outing in almost seven months after Covid-19 had cut 2019/20 short, Earps was on top form straight off the bat. Sam Kerr had converted from close range midway through the first half, but Mary refused to let the visitors extend their lead. Kerr was presented with a golden chance that could have killed the game just before the break, only for Earps to stand tall to deny the lethal Australian, before pouncing to deny them the rebound. United kept fighting hard all over the pitch and we’d eventually level through Leah Galton with 11 minutes left. It came moments after Earps had twice prevented Erin Cuthbert from putting Chelsea out of sight – Mary was quick off her line with the first effort, before shuffling quickly to save again as the Scot met the ball at the far post. If any fans had been there to see it, they surely would have been on their feet.

Boss Casey Stoney conceded that “the occasion” hampered United on our M16 bow, which wasn’t quite the routine win the 2-0 scoreline might suggest. Either side of second-half goals from Lauren James and Christen Press, Earps had a busy day at an eerily quiet Old Trafford, still closed to the public. Indeed, her five saves were the most she made in any game that season, matched only by five in a derby loss six weeks earlier. Kenza Dali tested Mary in the first half, but it was Dagny Brynjarsdottir who’d be routinely thwarted by our no.27. It took a smart save to deny the Iceland international from the edge of the area at 0-0, before Earps saved from the same player in similar circumstances at 1-0. Two more fine stops against Brynjarsdottir followed Press’s goal to squash any hopes of a West Ham comeback. The first was a one-on-one; the second a header from the towering midfielder. James and Press would grab the headlines, but Mary more than played her part (left) on a red-letter day.

Ah, the Gunners again, who Mary so often seems to thrive against, but this time on their own patch in a 1-1 draw. As the full-time whistle blew, there was disappointment for Earps and co, with Arsenal having equalised on 79 minutes, four minutes after Katie McCabe had been sent off, but a rewatch of this WSL contest acts as a reminder of how easily we could have left Borehamwood with nothing were it not for our stopper. After Alessia Russo had headed home from Katie Zelem’s corner to give us an early lead, Jonas Eidevall’s side responded with much intent, only to find Mary at her very best. First a Vivianne Miedema shot was brilliantly tipped on to the crossbar, while Earps would produce another super save to deny Caitlin Foord after she ghosted in at the far post. There wasn’t much Mary could do when the goal finally came from Stina Blackstenius, and while at the time it felt like a chance missed to move within two points of the table-topping Gunners, it was actually our first-ever point secured away from home against one of the ‘big three’, helping to pave the way for United to finally break into that elite group.

“I’ve worked with Mary before at Leicester and Birmingham and as a coach against her, and I’ve never seen her so focused,” was how Marc Skinner summarised Earps’s form in October 2022. And in those games where a keeper is left untested for long periods, retaining that focus to make a massive save at a vital moment is what separates the great from the good. This was how last season’s WSL trip to Leicester unfolded. The Reds controlled possession at the King Power but were continually frustrated by a Foxes rearguard that was quick to close spaces and largely limit us to half-chances, although thankfully Nikita Parris’s 33rd-minute header had given us a lead. The contest continued in such a manner, until Leicester were denied what would have been a spectacular second-half equaliser when Earps flew to her left to parry Josie Green’s dipping half-volley from just outside the box to safety. “Magnificent... technically perfect” was Skinner’s assessment of Earps, before he underlined the importance of the final result. “Last year, we would have drawn that game,” he declared. “Goals win games, but clean sheets can win titles.” Come May, Mary and the Reds had set a new WSL record for shut-outs (14), having pushed Chelsea in the title race all the way to the final day.

Our trip to the Madejski at the start of this year was another such result that defined a groundbreaking campaign for the Reds arguably more than any handsome one-sided wins. Such displays of mental strength so often prove to be the results best remembered come the end of the season, and while Rachel Williams deserved the plaudits for her brilliant winner in the 87th minute, Mary had laid the foundations for that with her display. In keeping the Royals at bay, Earps became the first keeper to keep 50 WSL clean sheets, while the result also sent United top. Reading created a flurry of early chances and a diving Earps did well to push a powerful strike from Emma Harries just wide of the near post. Mary was also equal to Justine Vanhaevermaet’s header when any spill in a crowded six-yard box could have been disastrous. As the clocked ticked on United began to dominate and it was opposite number Jacqueline Burns, diving this way and that in the Reading goal, who kept the score at 0-0, until Vanhaevermaet had another great chance. The Belgian’s glancing header was destined for the far corner, only for Earps to take flight to her right and divert the ball to safety. Moments later, Williams would strike. Phew.

From her time at Birmingham City, Bristol Academy (now City) and Wolfsburg, Mary was one of a number of Reds with previous Champions League experience ahead of our European bow against Paris Saint-Germain. On an eagerly awaited night here at LSV, Earps rose to the occasion majestically as the French giants and two-time UWCL runners-up threatened to give us a harsh introduction to the biggest stage with a very fast start in the first leg. Mary showcased exactly why FIFA had crowned her the world’s best goalkeeper just a few months earlier when she tipped what most expected to be a certain opener from Sandy Baltimore, in acres of space and with virtually all of the goal to aim at, behind for a corner. As PSG continued to put the pressure on, two strong hands to keep out a venomous Baltimore drive from a narrow angle ensured the game remained goalless at the interval, giving United a platform from which to improve in the second 45, which we most certainly did. Yes, if Earps could have replayed the moment she might have opted to charge out her box when Tabitha Chawinga was put clean through to score on 54 minutes,
24_30 Earps's 100 games.CGIM.indd 23
“THE REALITY IS, THE FIRST HALF WAS THE FASTEST WE HAVE PLAYED AGAINST, THE HIGHEST INTENSITY” – SKINNER but such a decision wouldn’t have been without risks, and on a night when we fought back to draw 1-1, this was still a 9/10 display from our Queen of Stops. “The reality is, the first half was the fastest we have played against, the highest intensity,” Skinner reflected afterwards, highlighting just how important it was to stay with PSG at that stage and not let the tie disappear out of sight. Earps made that possible with those two outstanding saves, and, by the full-time whistle, she’d made six stops in total.

EVERTON The October win at Anfield, in front of 23,088 fans, has been the highlight of the season so far for Sorensen’s side
32
UNITED WOMEN
Tonight’s cup opponents were disappointed to lose back-to-back WSL games to begin this season – fixtures against Brighton (home) and Leicester (away) that they would have fancied their chances of taking maximum points following a busy summer transfer window. Nevertheless, and despite the Toffees losing 5-0 when we visited Walton Hall Park in the league just before the recent international break, their results have generally been better in recent weeks. Brian Sorensen’s team were the first to take points off Liverpool in the WSL and then pegged back a much-improved Tottenham side inspired by Grace Clinton and Martha Thomas on Sunday – Aurora Galli’s late penalty rescued a point against the London side, after Everton had fought to stay in the game against a more dominant opponent. In their Conti Cup opener, it was also ultimately only a single goal that saw Manchester City prevail in the end – Toni Duggan finding the net for the Merseysiders against her former club. Everton have gone through enormous changes since the decision was made in April 2022 to hire
32-33_oppo spread.CGIM.indd 38
Sorensen in time for last season. Now, only eight players from the squad he inherited remain at the club, having notably recruited from Scandinavian markets that he knows extremely well. His style of play is also becoming clearer to see, with a high press and a focus on retaining possession very much two core philosophies to look out for. Tactically, Sorensen’s Everton were a lot more fluid last season, changing up formations on more than one occasion and moving between 3-5-2, 3-4-3 and 4-3-3, dependent on form and personnel. So far in 2023/24, it has been a more consistent 3-4-1-2, preferring the two-striker system that wasn’t always possible before. The centre forwards have proven interchangeable, although Hanna Bennison has been a constant in the ‘no.10’ role as far as the WSL has been concerned after arguably being a victim of her own versatility in previous campaigns. Bennison came off the bench in their Conti Cup opener against Manchester City, but Sorensen largely resisted the temptation to tinker or deviate too much from his best team in that one, so expect another strong team tonight.

The Dutch forward took some time to find her feet following last year’s arrival from Bordeaux but would finish 2022/23 with five goals in the final six WSL games of the campaign. The 27-year-old, who wore no.9 for the Netherlands at the World Cup, is looking to get back to that form after injury delayed her start to this season.
Into his second year as Everton boss, the Dane has had further opportunity to put his own stamp on the squad after already overseeing significant improvement last season. Before landing the job in 2022, the 43-year-old had exclusively worked in his homeland, including two spells at Fortuna Hjorring and guiding them to the UWCL quarters.
