WELCOME After Thursday night against the Foxes, it’s a Sunday afternoon showdown with the Seagulls, with three WSL points to play for today. You can relive the action and talking points from our previous WSL away day, against Chelsea, in the head coach and captain’s respective columns, as well as the match report (p4, p11, p7). Today’s opposition manager Hope Powell is someone Casey Stoney knows very well – but how much do you know about both of their playing careers? Find out in our ‘Casey or Hope?’ quiz in Fred the Red’s fan zone (p15). Summer signing Jane Ross is the focus of today’s interview (p20), where she talks to us about moving to Sweden, scuffing home her first United goal against Spurs, and signing up for Juan Mata’s Common Goal initiative. As ever, we round off the programme with a feast of player and team statistics for you to devour (p33). Come on United!

CASEY STONEY THE HEAD COACH’S COLUMN
Another close encounter could await as we welcome Hope Powell’s side to our home in the WSL, meaning we must be clinical when the chances arrive Hello and welcome to Leigh Sports Village, where we go up against Hope Powell and her Brighton side. I credit Hope for a lot of the things that have happened in my career: she gave me my first cap, she made me England captain and she made me captain of Team GB for the Olympics, and I’ll be forever grateful – but we want three points today! Brighton had a great victory last weekend against Birmingham, so they will be coming into this game with confidence, and they are the only team to have taken points off leaders Chelsea this season, which we couldn’t quite manage ourselves last Sunday. I thought we were really unlucky at Kingsmeadow, though. A dubious penalty decision cost us points, but unfortunately we cannot control that. We had good enough chances to take something, but that is the difference when you’re competing at this level. We always talk about being clinical in both boxes and unfortunately against Chelsea we weren’t and we got punished. It’s one of those things. Our game-changers
always come off the bench and make an impact, and they definitely did that against Chelsea, but luck wasn’t on our side. When the ball hits the goalkeeper and then manages to spin back out of the goal, you know it’s just one of those days, but we have to be very proud of the way we played. Bearing in mind we only had two days to prep for that game we ran them very, very close. So today we need to carry on being brave, and we need to be clinical in the final third when the chances come. Brighton are a very organised team and although I hope it’s an exciting match to watch, I don’t think there will be many goals in it. And if it’s anything like last season’s meeting in the FA Cup it will be a very close game. I really think the current WSL is the most competitive the league has ever been, and anyone can take points off anyone. So we just need to keep preparing in the right way and stick to the process. Enjoy the match.

• Winning run comes to an end at Kingsmeadow • Toone’s volley so nearly sees us claim late leveller
United Women’s five-game winning run in all competitions come to an end last Sunday, as the Reds were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea in an engrossing Women’s Super League encounter at Kingsmeadow, south-west London. Maren Mjelde’s second-half spot-kick broke the deadlock for the Blues, after Millie Turner was adjudged by referee Jack Packman to have brought down Fran Kirby inside the penalty area. The Reds, though, showed plenty of endeavour against the WSL league leaders, and were unfortunate not to draw level late on, as Ella Toone’s volley from Jess Sigsworth’s cross was pushed on to the bar by Blues keeper Ann-Katrin Berger, with the rebound hitting the German stopper on the back but somehow staying out. Fresh from an international break where United’s Mary Earps played in front of a record crowd at Wembley, and Kirsty Hanson received her first senior call-up for Scotland, the Reds travelled to the capital hoping to maintain our excellent winning run. And after clinically disposing of Everton in the Continental Cup before the two-week pause in domestic action, Casey Stoney named an unchanged XI for the first meeting between the Reds and the Blues. ⊲

United shots v Chelsea – two of which were on target as we came close
Players to wear the armband v Chelsea: Katie Zelem, then Amy Turner
The hosts fired an early warning shot, as Erin Cuthbert’s corner was floated in towards Mjelde, who pulled it back to Magdalena Eriksson, but thankfully the Swede blazed over from inside a crowded box. The Reds soon grew into the game, and had a great opportunity to take the lead in the eighth minute. Hanson harried Jonna Andersson and managed to win the ball off the Chelsea defender inside the hosts’ penalty area. However, the winger’s shot, from an acute angle, hit the side netting. United’s intensity continued, with Jackie Groenen’s right-footed effort from just outside the area forcing a save from Chelsea goalkeeper Berger. The hosts did pose a threat on the counterattack and had their best chance of the first half in the 23rd minute. So-yun Ji received the ball from Millie Bright, who had made a bursting run out of defence. The South Korean international then played in Ramona Bachmann, but Earps was there to palm the Swiss’s effort away for a corner. From the resulting set-piece, Bright’s towering header was easily dealt with by Earps. After the interval, it remained a closely fought contest, until Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the 64th minute. Having come on as a substitute just moments earlier, Kirby was challenged inside the area by Millie Turner and the referee duly pointed to the spot. Mjelde was given the responsibility to take it, and duly delivered, as her spot-kick was rifled into the bottom corner, despite Earps getting her fingertips to it. In a frantic final 10 minutes, Kirby attempted to wrap up the three points for the hosts, but Earps was able to get a vital touch to the ball, as Chelsea’s 26-year-old forward tried to round our keeper. Moments later, the Reds were inches away from an equaliser, as two of Stoney’s substitutes combined to great effect. Sigsworth’s cross from the right found Toone, whose volley from close range ricocheted off Berger, hit the underside of the crossbar and was somehow cleared away by Bright. The Reds couldn’t have come any closer to scoring, but ultimately, Stoney’s side were unable to restore parity before the final whistle.

CAPTAIN
KATIE ZELEM THE CAPTAIN’S COLUMN
It’s a month and a day until Christmas, and a dozen WSL points, along with progress in the cup, is our target in that time. With hard work, we can do it... We’re in the middle of a really busy period, and looking at the fixtures list, I think the games we’ve got coming up are all winnable. Put simply, we want to take as many points as possible from this period leading up to Christmas, especially after the disappointment of losing to Chelsea. In two of our games against the top three we could have come away with something. To be honest I thought we could have got at least a point against Chelsea. We could have gone in 1-0 up at half-time, and for Ella’s effort to be saved like that late on, we knew it wasn’t going to
“AGAINST CHELSEA, THINGS COULD HAVE EASILY GONE SO DIFFERENTLY – BUT WE DON’T WANT TO KEEP SAYING THAT”
be our day. Kirsty Hanson came close too, and the game was decided on a penalty. Things could have easily gone so differently, but we don’t want to keep saying that. We need to keep working hard, and we want to turn our work into actions. Yes, we’ve narrowly lost to each of the top teams 1-0, but whether it’s 1-0, 2-0 or 5-0 we’ve still come away with no points and that’s something we hope to change in the months ahead. Having played on Thursday night, two games in such a short space of time will be a test for us, but Casey has got the ability to change the team around and she’ll be thinking about when to rest players. That should help us be ready for this game, as well as the four games we’ve got coming up in the next three weeks, three of which are in the WSL. Brighton have had some up and down results so far this season, but they’ll be in high spirits after Sunday’s win, so it’s going to be a difficult game. I hope you enjoy it.

LANDMARK WEEKEND FOR WOMEN’S GAME With the Reds chasing an equaliser away to Chelsea last Sunday, defender Amy Turner – wearing the captain’s armband after Katie Zelem had left the action – launches the ball back into the Blues’ box. Alas, it wasn’t to be for Casey Stoney’s side, as the WSL leaders held on for a narrow win in the inaugural match between the two sides, but it was a gripping finale for the 4,790 fans in attendance – a sell-out at Chelsea’s Kingsmeadow home – with that crowd contributing to the 70,000-plus supporters who packed into grounds across the country for ‘women’s football weekend’.

“WE ALL DREAM OF A 40-YARD
SCR EAM E R
OR OVERHEAD KICK, BUT THEY ALL COUNT THE SAME!” Few in the game are as well-versed at putting the ball in the opposition net as Jane Ross, and here the prolific Scottish striker talks us through her first few months as a United player... How are you settling in at Manchester United since your summer transfer from West Ham? I’m settling in well and enjoying life at the club and with the team. I think the group of players that are here help a lot and I’ve found it really easy to come into this group. That’s really helped me settle in straight away. How does United differ from your previous clubs? Every coach and every set-up is different, regardless of what club you’re at. I’m really enjoying things so far: the way we work, the way Casey works and how the sports science works here too. I’m really enjoying things. And what about in the dressing room? Again, every club is different and every team has its different characters. There are different people who want to be in charge of the music, or singing and dancing, and then there are other personalities who are more
quiet and reserved. Every club I’ve been at has had those characters and they’re unique in their own way. We have a good group here and it’s a very enjoyable climate to be in. You would have known a few of the United players from before, especially the Scottish contingent. How much did that help? They did help, yeah. I was asking them loads of questions before I moved to Manchester, finding out a few things. I knew some of the Scottish girls from before and I’d played with Abbie [McManus] and Ella Toone at Manchester City also. Everyone at the club has made me feel really welcome. As one of the older players within a young United squad, did you instantly feel the need to take on a leadership role? I’m one of the more experienced members of this group ⊲

INTERVIEW
It’s a red letter day for our new no.19 as she gets off the mark for her new club away to Tottenham
but, for me, I just do things the way I always have and I have high standards for myself anyway. I like to just come in and do things the way they should be done. Hopefully I’m setting an example and helping others if I can. Do any of the younger players ever come and ask for some tips or advice from you? Not so much, but I’m an open person and always willing to help others if I can. I feel like we have a good group with a good balance and I’m always here to speak if anyone does need to. But all the players are really focused. You played for West Ham last year and lined up against United in the Continental League Cup. What are your memories of that game? It was a tough game. United won the game and, at the time, it was obviously very frustrating for me. United played well and performed well and dominated the match physically, which I was quite impressed with. Was it a first indication for you of just how good this team could be? Yeah, they won the match and there was certainly a lot of quality within the group. Now I’m in that environment and playing and training with the players every day, you see that more than maybe you would in a one-off match.
You played in Sweden’s top flight between 2012-15 – how did that experience compare to the Scottish and English game? When I was younger, it was always an ambition of mine to play abroad and then I got the opportunity to do that in Sweden, which I took and I ended up playing there for three years. It was good, it was challenging for me, both as a player and a person. I think the league over there was very physical at the time and it was a big step up for me from playing in Scotland. I enjoyed my three years there and it was a different culture. It helped me grow and develop. It was always something I wanted to do and the club I joined [Vittsjo GIK] made me feel really welcome and I really enjoyed the lifestyle. I met some great people. I tried to learn the language, but they’re very good at English which made it difficult at times! This is your fifth year playing in the WSL. Do you think the standard has improved in that time? The league has gone from strength to strength. All the clubs are basically full-time professionals now and it’s attracting a lot of foreign talent to come in as well as the talent that’s already here. You see now that it’s attracting greater attendances and is gaining more attention and media coverage. The women’s game in general is just going up and up and hopefully that continues.

It wasn’t the cleanest strike for your goal, but you didn’t look too bothered! No, they all count! We all dream of that 40-yard screamer or an overhead kick, but at the end of the day, they all count for the same. You take them however they come.
Jane and Lauren were first introduced to each other in last season’s Continental League Cup!
“I ENJOYED MY THREE YEARS IN SWEDEN. THE LEAGUE WAS VERY PHYSICAL AND IT HELPED ME DEVELOP AS A PLAYER” What was it like making your debut in front of such a huge crowd, as you did against Manchester City in September? Amazing. As a player you want to be performing in front of big crowds and having so many fans is great. The United fans are obviously very vocal and it’s great having them there every match to support us. Hopefully it continues to go like this and these crowds can become the norm. You scored your first United goal in the win against Tottenham. As a striker, is it important to get your first goal early on after joining a new club? As a forward you want to be scoring goals and helping the team. I was obviously very happy to get my first goal against Tottenham and hopefully I can continue to score many more for United this season.
You’re one of a number of forwards in the squad, with Casey having a lot of options to choose from in attacking areas... Yeah, there are a lot of forwards in the team and she has a decision every week as to who she is going to play. We’re all different players in what we can bring and she obviously decides what is best for each match.
Such competition between you all can only be a good thing for the squad, can’t it... Definitely. You have to be at your best to get into the team and that’s the big thing for all of us. We’re all competitive and we all want to be playing. We’re always pushing each other to be the best we can be. You must have had a few battles with Casey over the years as a player. How have you found her as a manager? I’m enjoying working with her. I enjoy the training sessions she puts on and I enjoy the tactical side of things. I feel like I’m learning from her every day. During the recent international break you scored again for Scotland, which was your 60th international goal. You must be incredibly proud of that record... Of course. As a forward you always want to be scoring goals and to be able to do that for the national team is always something I’m happy about. We see you’re part of Juan Mata’s Common Goal initiative. Tell us about your decision to become a part of that... I feel like I’m in a very privileged position to be able ⊲

Facing Chelsea with the Reds on Sunday – her seventh appearance for the club
Jane, then at Glasgow City, was one of four standby players for Team GB at the 2012 London Olympics
to do what I do on a daily basis and to be able to play the game I love, professionally. To contribute one per cent of my annual salary to charities supported by Common Goal is important, I feel. I wanted to do that because I feel like being able to help someone else’s life, even in a small way, is something I’d like to be able to do. Today’s opponents Brighton are struggling near the foot of the WSL table, but they were no pushovers when we faced them in the FA Cup last season... I think this year all the clubs in the WSL are strong and will definitely give you a tough match. I don’t think there are going to be any easy matches. Brighton are well organised and have an attacking threat as well. I think this will be a challenging match for us. Hope Powell is their coach and she’ll have them defensively organised; they have some good players going forward and some fast threats. Our focus will be on our game and our game plan, and we’ll, obviously, be going out there to get the win. After today it’s an away game against your old side West Ham United. Are you looking forward to going up against some familiar faces?
“HOPE POWELL WILL HAVE BRIGHTON DEFENSIVELY ORGANISED... THIS WILL BE A CHALLENGING MATCH FOR US” Yeah, of course. I enjoyed my season there last year, but I’ll be wanting to go there and get the win. We’re about a third of the way into the season. What do you see as realistic aims for this team during the rest of the campaign? It might be an old cliché, but I generally do think we need to take it one game at a time. I don’t think you can be looking too far ahead and targeting wins in the future or thinking where you’re going to finish. For us, we want to win every match and we want to be up at the top end of the table near the end of the season, and we’ll give everything we can to do that. In the cups, we’ll be looking to challenge and be consistent as well.

SHIV’S A repeat of last season’s game against Brighton would please United’s no.1, although this time around she’ll be taking shots, not saving them... I’m getting a lot larger I made the trip down Siobhan goes pitchside with the camera now, so diving for penalties to south London with ahead of the Chelsea game, before taking to her comfy seat in the stands! is definitely out of the the team last weekend question. Katie Zelem for the Chelsea match said to me recently and although it was that I was just normal a really frustrating Shiv with a bump one result at Kingsmeadow, day... and then the next day the girls have got to be I turned up and suddenly so proud of themselves. I’d turned into a proper As with our league games pregnant woman! It sure against Manchester City and feels like this baby could be Arsenal, we can consider a big one, and I’m counting ourselves unfortunate not to down the weeks now. have taken a point, and the Christmas this year is definitely going to be a little different, performance leaves us with so much to build on I know that much, and after making the crazy decision to in the weeks ahead. We won’t face any of last season’s do some home improvements in the run-up to Christmas, top three until February now, and this is a really I’ve got my fingers crossed that I can finish it all in time good opportunity to put together another good run, and that the little one doesn’t make an early appearance! hopefully starting this afternoon against Brighton. I took my camera down with me to the Chelsea game It won’t be easy against Hope Powell’s side, and I enjoyed taking some more photos, mostly from though, who had an excellent result against the comfort of my seat in the stands. I’m enjoying Birmingham last weekend. It will be great learning all about photography, but having to to see Hope again – she gave me my first sit in the stands and do it, rather than being England senior cap 15 years ago and on the touchline, has its drawbacks. I’m pretty she’s achieved so much in the game. sure I had an amazing picture of Amy making I’ve also got great memories from a sliding tackle, but we’ll never know as the the last time we played Brighton, as head of the person sat in front of me took I saved a penalty and we beat them centre stage on the shot! Still, I was pleased 2-0 in the FA Cup fourth round with my other photos [see cover and earlier this year. A repeat of centre spread for two examples], that would be lovely... although and I hope you like them too. it clearly won’t be me saving Now let’s hope for a win today! any penalties out there today!

Having represented Norway at every youth level from U15 to U23, she’s now part of their senior squad, where – much like at United – her next target will be to make an impact in the starting XI.

A crowd of 4,130 saw the Seagulls claim their first WSL win of the season against Birmingham City
TODAY’S VISITORS
BRIGHTON
Under the stewardship of their legendary coach, the Seagulls are out to improve on last season’s ninth place, and they had a real lift last Sunday... The Seagulls have found their second WSL season to be tough going, with two draws (albeit one to Chelsea) and three loses from their first five games. Last weekend’s 3-0 win against Birmingham would have given everybody a big lift, however, and boss Hope Powell will be hoping her charges can take that form into a maiden away meeting with United. Powell recruited smartly in the summer following last term’s ninth-place finish, focusing on improving her squad’s defence, with Dutch international Danique Kerkdijk (Bristol City) and Danish youth international Matilde Lundorf (VSK Aarhus) both arriving at Broadfield Stadium – Brighton Women’s home ground, which they share with Crawley Town men’s team, although they did line up at Brighton men’s Amex Stadium seven days ago. Elsewhere in the Seagulls’ squad, fellow new signing Megan Walsh has established herself as first choice in
goal following a summer move from relegated Yeovil, with Sophie Harris moving to back-up between the sticks. Kerkdijk and Lundorf have bedded in reasonably well as Powell’s first choice central defensive pairing, with Felicity Gibbons and Victoria Williams either side at full-back. The Sussex club have altered between a four and five in midfield so far this season, with Powell likely to switch to a more rigid unit in an effort to stifle United, who beat

Lundorf has looked like a solid addition to the Brighton backline
Brighton 2-0 when the teams last met, in the Women’s FA Cup in February. Ex-Chelsea player and Seagulls’ skipper Dani Bowman (previously Dani Buet before she married this summer) is a consistent performer as the anchor at the base of midfield, with Aileen Whelan and Ellie Brazil providing the energy around her. Out wide, Irish international Megan Connolly and Lea Le Garrec (see right) have featured prominently, offering pace and a goal threat from the flanks. Powell does have options, though, and could opt to bring one of them into a more central area to accommodate Ini Umotong, who has been used in away games to offer an out-ball.
GREEN’S IN THE GOALS Top scorer Kayleigh Green, who scored twice last weekend to move on to five for the season, is set to play as a lone striker today, with Connolly and Le Garrec supporting her when they can. Powell knows that the Seagulls could be set for a battle against the drop, with the promotion of United and Spurs only increasing the of competition. Experience will be key in the months ahead, with Powell offering a wealth of knowledge from the bench, alongside seasoned campaigners Bowman, Whelan, Le Garrec and Green on the pitch. If the older heads can help the young guns such as Connolly and Brazil to shine, Brighton could well find themselves pushing towards the top half, rather than facing a fight to stay up.

ONE TO WATCH LEA LE GARREC
THE MANAGER HOPE POWELL
French international Le Garrec joined the Seagulls at the start of the season, from Division 1 Feminine side Guingamp. Having previously played for Paris Saint-Germain, the creative wide player was highlighted by Powell as a key signing. Despite a frustrating start in front of goal – both for her and her team – Le Garrec has shown real quality on the ball in her left-sided role, striking up an early partnership with Kayleigh Green, and 26-year-old Le Garrec got off the mark in style last weekend, firing in a spectacular long-range effort against Birmingham.
Brighton boss Powell is by far the most experienced head coach in the Women’s Super League, having managed the England national team from 1998-2013. The former midfielder – who spent her entire playing career in London with Millwall, Fulham, Bromley and Croydon – took charge of the Seagulls ahead of the 2017/18 season. Powell led her team to a second-placed finish in her first term in charge, putting the team in pole position to secure the Tier 1 licence required to play in the top flight the following season.

JAMES’S PAIR AGAINST THE SEAGULLS Twelve of the 14 players who were involved in our one previous encounter with Brighton remain with the Reds (Charlie Devlin and Alex Greenwood having since moved on). That FA Cup win in February saw Lauren James score both our goals in a 2-0 win – a pair that sees the forward sit atop our FA Cup scorers list. January will see us return to the FA Cup, of course, with United and Brighton entering in the fourth round.
