NATIONAL SERVICE

This week saw United midfielder Lauren James named FA Women’s Championship Player of the Month for September. Our no.16 – who turned 17 during the month – finished ahead of team-mate Jess Sigsworth, as well as forwards Rebecca Carter (Lewes) and Sarah Wiltshire (Tottenham). Lauren featured in all four of our fixtures across the month, scoring three goals, all away from home – two at Aston Villa and one at London Bees. Congratulations, Lauren!

While the international break saw Alex Greenwood and Siobhan Chamberlain join up with England’s senior squad, Aimee Palmer and Emily Ramsey were both involved with the England U19 team, who qualified for the elite rounds of the U19 Euros with three straight wins – Palmer scoring four goals across the three games. Well done, all.

THE HEAD COACH’S COLUMN

Today’s game could be a different type of test for us – and we need to be ruthless

H

ello and welcome back to Leigh Sports Village where this afternoon we welcome Charlton Athletic. Last time we were here, we felt we did enough to win, but we just couldn’t quite finish our chances. Our performance deserved more. We were frustrated but teams will come here to try to do that; they will have a plan, be physical, try to stop us playing. Durham came to get a point and they got it. It’s all about lessons, though. I actually think it’s good that we’ve had that kind of match early on because we’re going to face it time and again. What we need to focus on is ourselves, being clinical when we get those chances and making better decisions in the final third. That is something we have been working on during the international break. Even though we’ve not had the whole squad in, we can still plant seeds with the players here. Much like the first international break of the season, the last fortnight has given us a great opportunity to work with individuals one-on-one. We were able to get into position specifics and have individual meetings. Feedback from them is really important, seeing how they are after 12 weeks. I’m big on player ownership

and player accountability. The more you involve them, the more buy-in you get. It’s always a two-way communication; the players have input on everything. We ask a lot of them but we try to give just as much back. For instance, the benefit of the internationals going away has been being able to give the players who were here some double days off. They had their first weekend off for a long time to switch off a bit. But now it’s time to switch back on and ultimately, we have to be ruthless. I always say, “It doesn’t matter if you walk away with a 1-0 win – you have won the game.” We just need to get that consistency with the performance and the result, putting them together. Riteesh Mishra’s Charlton side have some dangerous players, like Kit Graham who’s in good form, and if they play two up top, it will be a different challenge for us today – one the centre-halves will relish. But whenever we go into a game, the focus is on what we can do. If we can move the ball quickly, exploit spaces and be clinical in the final third, we’re confident we can get the win. Enjoy the game.

NO WAY PAST THE WILDCATS Durham keeper stands strong as visitors become first team to take points off United in the league

UNITED WOMEN 0 DURHAM WOMEN 0 SUNDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2018 | CHAMPIONSHIP | LEIGH SPORTS VILLAGE | ATT: 2,244

United Women’s winning league run came to an end as Durham held the Reds to a goalless draw at Leigh Sports Village – but it so easily could have been three points instead of one for Casey Stoney’s side were it not for the brilliance of opposition goalkeeper Hannah Reid. Katie Zelem had the best chance from the penalty spot, with her 65th-minute spot-kick being one of many fine saves to deny United. Lauren James, who celebrated her 17th birthday that weekend, was the player causing Durham’s defence most trouble during a fairly even first half. She had a golden chance early on after Alex Greenwood’s cross was pulled back inside by Lizzie Arnot. James’s first-time effort failed to find the target, however. Jess Sigsworth then had an opportunity from an acute angle, but Reid was able to clear the shot out of play. Zelem’s floated cross then skimmed over Sigsworth’s head, while Reid produced a fingertip save to deny United after a goalmouth scramble. After half-time, James’s long-range shot was tipped over by Reid. From the resulting corner, Sigsworth’s effort was cleared off the line.

Zelem was denied from the penalty spot

James put in another solid 90 minutes in the middle of the park

Reds’ manager Stoney brought Leah Galton on shortly before the hour mark, and the forward immediately provided some fresh impetus as she charged her way into the area, only for her cross to fall into the arms of Reid. United soon won a penalty after Greenwood was brought down. Zelem, who scored from the spot against Villa and Sheffield United, was denied by Reid, who dived to her right. With 20 minutes to go, Sigsworth made way for Charlie Devlin. Shortly after, Galton was stretchered off following a collision in midfield, and was replaced by Kirsty Smith. With the referee indicating 10 minutes of stoppage-time following Galton’s injury, the Reds continued to push for a winner. James had a shot from just inside the box that was initially dropped by Reid but stopped before it could cross the line. James still had time for another go from further out, but again she saw Reid tip the ball over the frame of the goal. THE CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

‘F

rustrating’ is probably the word of the moment when we think back to the Durham game. It sums our feelings up perfectly as a team. A few decisions didn’t go our way but we have to control what we can and that’s putting the game to bed. On the day, we just weren’t clinical enough. We have to take the positives, though: our performance was good, we gained a point and we created more than enough to win the game. We are going to come up against challenges like that throughout the season. What will define us and our season is how we react to setbacks, and we proved we could bounce back after the Reading game. I’m so proud of how the team is developing on a weekly – even day-to-day – basis. By the time we kick off against Charlton, we’ll be fully prepared and focused. After today, it’s our turn to miss a matchday, with our visit to Leicester two weeks away. Our approach doesn’t change but we can definitely use the extra time to our advantage. Some may use it to rest and recover, others will train harder and work on specifics. Although we take it game by game, we have always got an eye on the bigger picture too, making the most of the opportunities free weeks bring to gain advantages in whatever way we feel best to do that.

On a personal level, the international break was really positive. I’m very fortunate to be able to work with Phil Neville and he’s United through and through, so we have some interesting chats! He pushes me to keep improving; he’s always asking questions and challenging me. Working with Casey and Phil, I have the perfect opportunity to develop my knowledge and keep pushing to be the best player I possibly can be. That’s what every single player in this United squad is striving to do every day, and we can’t wait to get those red shirts back on for today’s game.

rsty Hanson has three goals and six dynamic uth international shares her journey so far... What are your standout memories from that historic first game? Persistence is a word that springs to mind. It was a tough game but what was really pleasing was the winner came from something we had been working on in training: getting the ball into the box. It was such a great moment when Lizzie [Arnot] scored late on, seeing and experiencing the whole team celebrating, everyone on the bench, all together. And how about the first game here at Leigh Sports Village – what was the general feeling after the Reading defeat? The 2-0 scoreline was definitely a bit misleading if you hadn’t seen the game. We played really well and had our chances. Overall,

we were pleased with our performance. We took a lot of confidence from playing so well against a team that will be near the top of WSL table come the end of the season.

You bounced back – and then some! – in our first league game, though, away to Aston Villa... You could say that! And getting my first goal was my highlight from that match. I’m pretty sure I’d hit the crossbar in every game before this one – maybe in this one too! – so it was great to finally get on the scoresheet, especially as I’d been passing a lot in the final third rather than having a go myself. Even though we were already well ahead, I celebrated like I’d got the winner!

The quick-thinking, fast-moving winger has been extremely hard to stop at times this season

Lauren James scored an absolute belter against Villa too, and she has taken the Championship by storm. What’s it like playing with her? I forget she’s only 17, as she acts and plays like she’s older. The skills she has, the composure too, it’s scary to think where she will go in the game in the future. Some of the things she does in training I’d be working on for ages, but it just comes naturally to her. We all help each other as a squad but even as the youngest in the group, she’s confident enough to be helping older, more experienced players too.

You’ve got this great clean sheet run going, but Durham stopped you from scoring for the first time in the league this season... Yeah, the Durham game was frustrating but I actually think it was one of our best performances; we just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net. We had a game plan and stuck to it, exploited the wide areas well, moved the ball quickly and were solid in defence again. Fair play to their goalkeeper, though. I thought she was excellent, their best player on the day.

Up next, it was Sheffield United. You scored your first goal on home soil that night in the rain… I did. Getting my first goal here was incredible. The noise when I scored was amazing. The whole stadium went crazy, it was an unreal feeling. The fans really are our 12th player and make a difference, especially when we’re not at our best, which we weren’t against Sheffield United.

You have developed a good partnership with Alex Greenwood down the left. What’s it like to play with her? I’m gaining confidence every week, especially playing in front of Alex. Her experience and the way she encourages us all makes her such a good captain. She wants the best out of everyone and demands it too. We’re working well, combining well and getting her attacking as much as possible.

HOPEFULLY I CAN CATCH THE EYE OF [SCOTLAND MANAGER] SHELLEY KERR BETWEEN NOW AND JUNE There has been an international break since the Durham game. What’s been on your agenda? Recovery followed by three days of triple sessions – full days! We start with power, working on short, sharp movements and explosiveness. We then head out on to the pitch for a couple of hours, then it’s strength. Strength is tough after two sessions and food. You feel great after doing it though. It’s a World Cup season, and Scotland will be there. Is that on your mind? It is definitely something I have been thinking

about. I have played for Scotland at Under-17 and U19 level. I’m just going to keep working hard to stay in the starting XI at United, get as much game time as possible and hopefully catch the eye of [Scotland manager] Shelley Kerr between now and next June. Having moved south to Manchester, how do you switch off from football? I sometimes go home to see family and friends, or go out with the ‘housies’ in Manchester. Sometimes I do some baking… which is Lizzie Arnot’s fault! I live with her and she’s amazing at baking, like a professional. Manchester United Women v Charlton Athletic Women 15

EMILY’S WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT Young Reds goalkeeper returns to where it all began for her, handing advice to girls at MU Foundation’s Regional Talent Club Passing on your knowledge to the next generation is one of the more rewarding aspects of being a professional footballer – even at the age of 17! Emily Ramsey still has many years ahead of her in the game and is seeking to establish herself in the newly formed Manchester United Women. After returning from the Under 20s’ Women’s World Cup recently, the young stopper went back to the club’s FA Girls’ Regional Talent Club, where she spent eight formative years honing her talents. “I started at United when I was eight and spent eight more seasons here,” said the goalkeeper, one of 21 players signed by Casey Stoney over the summer for the Reds’ first professional women’s team. “I learned a lot from the club when I was younger; I think that has pushed me through to where I can be now.” Emily joined Liverpool last year, as understudy to United’s current stopper – the highly experienced Siobhan Chamberlain. After a year on Merseyside, Ramsey returned to the Reds, this time as a first-team squad member – something she is thrilled to be able to say. “I got to the age where, because there wasn’t a women’s team in place yet at United, I had to leave,” she explained. “I had a year at Liverpool but now I’m back. It’s so exciting for me to be able to say I am playing for United’s first ever professional women’s team.” Having worked her way up the various England youth levels, the United keeper (right) has now cemented her place as no.1 for the U19 side. It’s a testament to her development that the teenager recently returned from the U20s’ Women’s World Cup in France, where she and her team-mates picked up a bronze medal.

The Reds’ no.13 shares her U20 World Cup experiences – and her medal – with the group

Ramsey shared her memorable experiences with United’s youth players at their training centre in Eccles and brought along her medal for them to see. Speaking about the tournament, Emily said: “It was an honour for me to be there. I was so excited to go and I’m proud of the way that the team pushed on and made history at that age group. I can take so much from it” Having been in their position herself, Ramsey was more than happy to offer her advice to the youngsters and made a point of stating that education is an integral part of the journey. “It’s got to fit as your priority,” Emily added. “Football can come after because everything that you are doing in the game when you are young is a learning experience. It’s important to work hard but also enjoy it because if you’re not enjoying it then something’s wrong; you should always be enjoying your football. There’s an opportunity for these girls to come through to Manchester United Women’s first team in the future, which I didn’t have when I was younger – it’s exciting.” Manchester United Women v Charlton Athletic Women 17

ne of the country’s most dominant teams during the early part of this century, Charlton came into being in 2000, having previously gone by the name Croydon Women. They also have a direct link to our new, exciting United team, with Casey Stoney wearing the captain’s armband at Charlton throughout the greatest period of their history. Stoney joined the club in 2002 – the same year she made her England debut – and soon took the captaincy. A spell of huge achievement followed, in which Charlton reached three successive finals in both the Women’s FA Cup and League Cup. In 2003, a crowd of 10,389 and TV audience of over two million watched Stoney and her colleagues take on Fulham at Selhurst Park in their first FA Cup

final. Unfortunately, a 3-0 loss followed, and the scoreline was repeated in the following year’s final, when the Addicks met all-conquering Arsenal. They did manage to snare their first major trophy that same season, however, beating Fulham 1-0 in the 2004 League Cup final. The next campaign, they reached their third successive FA Cup final, and this time managed to jump over the final hurdle, with Eni Aluko’s strike proving enough to dispatch Everton and enable Stoney to lift the trophy.

DECADE OF RECOVERY

Charlton finally got one over on Arsenal in 2006 by defeating them 2-1 to win the League Cup, but the Addicks suffered a devastating blow in 2007, when the club announced the shock closure of its women’s team. Charlton’s chief executive Peter Varney explained that the relegation of the men’s side and the consequential financial problems had left little alternative, but it was a heartbreaking moment for the fans and players, with Stoney one of many to leave. A late sponsorship deal saved the women’s team, but relegation followed in 2008. They have steadily rebuilt since then, and climbed back to the second tier last term after winning the Premier League Southern Division title, then beating Northern third-tier champions Blackburn to secure promotion. Thus far in 2018/19, the good vibes are continuing. Along with United, Spurs and Durham, they are unbeaten in the Championship, with two wins and a draw already on the board – including a ruthless display in front of goal in their last outing, as they ended Lewes’ 100 per cent record with a resounding 4-1 victory. That made it four games on the spin where the Addicks have netted a minimum of two goals, with Kit Graham (4) and Gemma Bryan (3) leading the way on the goals front.

O N E TO WATC H: K it Graham

Once a promising youngster in Nottingham Forest’s Academy, Mishra suffered a double leg fracture at 18, which scuppered his dreams of progressing to the first team. He subsequently developed an interest in coaching and, by his own admission, has enjoyed a “whirlwind’ rise since joining Charlton’s youth set-up in 2014. Last year he was named Women’s Premier League Manager of the Year at the FA Women’s Football Awards, after leading the Addicks to a soaraway title success in the Southern Division. “It’s been easy managing the team,” he said. “I’ve got brilliant players and staff and I’ve just been fortunate enough to lead them.”

Charlton’s star forward joined the club in 2004, aged nine, and has scored over 200 goals since making her debut as a 16-year-old. Her 32 league goals propelled their promotion charge last season, and she memorably capped a superb campaign by scoring all four goals in the win at Crystal Palace that clinched the Southern title. Previously an England U15 international, Graham, now 22, committed her future to Charlton during the summer and looks well positioned to make a positive impression in the second tier. “I’m not expecting to score as many goals as I’m used to,” she admits, “but that’s a challenge in itself which I’m looking forward to.”
