WELCOME Having narrowly lost to Emma Hayes’s Chelsea on two occasions this season, today we’ll be hoping it’s a case of third time lucky, as Casey Stoney’s Reds take on the unbeaten Londoners here in Leigh. We’re probably due a bit of fortune following the events of last weekend (pictured below and p7), and both the manager and captain reflect on the trip to Adams Park in their exclusive programme columns (p4/p11). In the United squad that day was the returning Aimee Palmer, and the midfielder is the focus of our big interview (p20), with the talented teen full of optimism following a fruitful loan spell at Sheffield United. Today we will also pause to remember the darkest day in Manchester United’s history – the Munich Air Disaster of 6 February 1958. Turn to p13 to read how the club will mark the 62nd anniversary of the tragedy ahead of this afternoon’s WSL fixture.

HEAD COACH

CASEY STONEY THE HEAD COACH’S COLUMN

Every player battled to the very end last Sunday, and if we can do the same today, while making better decisions in the final third, we’ll have a real chance... Good afternoon and welcome to Leigh Sports Village for our league match against Chelsea. Results might not have been what we wanted over the last three matches, but I’m immensely proud of the players. That’s one of the toughest weeks any team could have: three difficult opponents, a tricky pitch against a very physical Reading side and trying circumstances, to say the least. We weren’t far away with any of the results and every player stood up in all three games when I needed them. They certainly deserved better last weekend, but I must say they acquitted themselves brilliantly in an incredibly difficult situation. They contained their emotions so well even though they weren’t always protected, which is one of the biggest concerns I have regarding the level of officiating in our league. They went about their business professionally from the get-go. They didn’t stop or give up. We know we can’t rely on or control the standard of officiating week-to-week, but what we can control is our work ethic, decision making, desire to score and preparation. We were upset and angry on Sunday but we’re ready to

pick ourselves up and give everything we’ve got to get three points today. We have a great squad and we’ve needed everyone in the last few weeks, with some big players out. Kirsty Hanson’s injury is a bit more long-term with her ankle but Leah is getting stronger all the time and will be back soon. Ella returns from suspension today – she learnt a harsh lesson missing those three games in a week. Defensively, we have been brilliant in our previous encounters with Chelsea – we were organised and difficult to break down. Emma Hayes even commented and complimented us on our performances, mentioning how they struggled to make the breakthrough against us. It’s in the final third where we need to be better. We’ve created the chances and just not taken them. We’ll be looking to be more dynamic and make better decisions when we get into those positions to give ourselves the best chance of reversing the 0-1 scoreline. Enjoy the game.

Lauren James scored her sixth WSL goal of the campaign last weekend, as United Women drew 1-1 against Reading at Adams Park – but it could have been so much more were it not for a hugely contentious penalty decision for the hosts’ leveller. James gave the Reds a first-half lead with a well-struck left-footed finish, after Mary Earps’ long cross-field free-kick from just outside the United area had put the forward through. Soon after, Amy Turner thought she’d made it 2-0 with a header from Katie Zelem’s free-kick, only for it to be ruled out for offside. Another big chance came United’s way in the second half, as James’s low cross from the left just evaded Jess Sigsworth and Jane Ross inside the six-yard box. The hosts then had a period of dominance, with Amalie Eikeland going closest, before the spot-kick drama began. First Reading were awarded a penalty after Remi Allen was brought down in the box, but Earps did superbly to deny Fara Williams from 12 yards. At the other end, James went close as goalkeeper Rachael Laws saved with her legs, before those in red were left stunned when Jo Potter’s free-kick struck Zelem on the head inside the United box, only for the referee to deem it a handball as she pointed to the ⊲ Manchester United Women v Chelsea Women 07

spot again. This time Williams made no mistake as she struck it high to Earps’ right as the spoils were shared. The draw concluded a disappointing few days for Casey Stoney’s side, coming on the back of a narrow League Cup semi-final exit against Chelsea. United started the game strongly under the lights here at Leigh Sports Village, controlling the majority of the possession and fashioning the first chance of the game in the seventh minute when Jackie Groenen’s surging run found James, who dragged her attempt wide of the post from outside the 18-yard-box. The first shot on target came on 25 minutes after James won a free-kick inside the visitors’ half. Zelem provided the delivery into the box, aiming for the head of Abbie McManus, but the defender couldn’t trouble Carly Telford in the opposition goal. Chelsea’s first big chance fell to Guro Reiten, whose header needed Earps to pull off a diving save to keep the scoreline level. United’s players started the second half with as much gusto as they did the first and couldn’t have gone much closer to scoring. A corner venomously whipped in by Zelem found the head of McManus, but her effort whistled past the post. Despite all the promising signs, the Blues would soon strike the first blow. A swift counterattack, led by Reiten, caught out the Reds, who didn’t deal with the cross into the box and Mjelde cleverly directed her shot into the back of the net. There was almost an instant response when the ball fell to Groenen in midfield and she fed the pass through to James; however, the striker couldn’t keep her shot down from close range. The Blues began to control the game in the final few minutes and with United starting to make mistakes in defensive areas, Earps was again called into action when a Reiten effort almost doubled the lead. Mjelde’s goal eventually proved enough for Chelsea, leaving the Reds to rue a semi-final defeat for the second season in a row. As for Emma Hayes’s Blues, they will face Manchester City in the final on 29 February, to be played at the City Ground, Nottingham.

CAPTAIN

KATIE ZELEM THE CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

An extra day off this week has helped us clear our heads and refocus after a tough spell, as we aim to become the first team to beat Chelsea in the WSL... Last week was a really hard week. Three games in eight days is difficult regardless, let alone when they’re against Chelsea, City and Reading! Added to that, we have obviously felt hard done by with a few decisions going against us recently. It’s particularly difficult when a decision that goes against you seems to be so obvious and blatant that it’s wrong. It was important for us to keep our heads against Reading though, and we did. We had 10 minutes left and we wanted all three points. We are learning – and quickly – that we need to take matters into our own hands. In particular, making sure we have more than a one-goal margin in games. If we take more of our chances, decisions like the one against

“IT WAS IMPORTANT FOR US TO KEEP OUR HEADS AGAINST READING, AND WE DID THAT”

Reading won’t impact results as much. Mary certainly took things into her own hands against Reading, keeping us in the game with the earlier penalty save – and, fair play, she celebrated it like a goal. It was a huge moment for us and gave us momentum. She’s a huge character on and off the pitch and has had a big impact in several matches. After such a hectic few weeks, Casey gave us an extra day off this week. It doesn’t sound like much, but speaking to the girls, it’s made such a difference – the opportunity to get our minds away from football for a bit as well as our bodies. Spending time with family, seeing friends... I had a massage! We came back in on Wednesday fresh, raring to go and we’re ready for the Chelsea game today. We’ve lost both games against Chelsea 1-0, and their goals have come from nothing really. It could have been a very different game had we capitalised on our chances a couple of weeks ago. Against the top teams you can’t switch off for a minute and we’ll be on it from the first whistle today.

REMEMBERING MUNICH Reds to pay respects to victims on 62nd anniversary lives 62 years ago. On 6 February 1958, a charter plane carrying 44 people crashed on the runway after refuelling at Munich Airport. The accident claimed 23 lives, among them eight Manchester United players and three club officials, with the Reds on board the flight following their European Cup quarter-final second leg away to Red Star Belgrade, played the previous evening in the former Yugoslavia. With today being United Women’s closest fixture to the anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster – the darkest day in Manchester United’s history – the players and coaches will pay their respects. As with the men’s team match against Wolves last Saturday, as well as the youth-team fixtures taking place at the start of February, the United players will wear black armbands during the game to mark the occasion. At Leigh Sports Village this afternoon, an announcement will be made over the public address system ahead of kick-off to honour those who tragically lost their

Tommy Taylor and Liam ‘Billy’ Whelan all died at the scene, before Duncan Edwards died in hospital 15 days later as a result of his injuries. Three days ago, on the anniversary of the tragedy, United fan group ‘Munich 58’ hosted a ceremony under the Munich Memorial Clock at Old Trafford, with United legend Bryan Robson and United Women head coach Casey Stoney laying wreaths on behalf of the club ahead of a minute’s silence at 3.04pm – the time of the fatal crash. We will never forget.

GALTON’S NEW DEAL WITH REDS Extension for talented winger Leah Galton has agreed a new contract at Manchester United, keeping her at the club until the end of the 2020/21 season, with the option to extend for a further year. The 25-year-old winger, who previously played for Leeds United, Sky Blue FC (in New Jersey, USA) and Bayern Munich, has made 34 appearances and scored six goals in all competitions for United since joining in July 2018. Leah said: “I’m thrilled to extend my contract with this great club. I’m enjoying my football under the guidance of Casey and the coaching staff and I just want to keep improving to become the best player I can be. We have an incredible group.”

MARY’S HIGHS AND LOWS Mary Earps salutes the crowd at Reading’s Adams Park home, following 90 minutes of mixed emotions for the Reds stopper as she went up against her old club. Having launched the long free-kick that led to Lauren James’s first-half opener, Mary then dived brilliantly to her right to save Fara Williams’s penalty after the break (inset). That left Mary and her team-mates well on track to head back north with all three points and a clean sheet, only for a highly controversial penalty decision to present Williams with a second attempt to beat Earps from the spot, and this time she wasn’t to be denied. ‘The highs and lows of the game, wow – flabbergasted,’ tweeted Mary after the game. ‘Happy to get an assist and to save a penalty, but really feel we deserved more than just a point for our gritty performance and the heart we showed.’

“MY LOAN MOVE GAVE ME

CO N FID E N C E.

NOW I’M HAPPY TO BE BACK AND FIGHTING FOR A SHIRT” She’s returned to the Reds after a productive five months in Sheffield, and now Aimee Palmer wants to show how far she’s come in the remaining months of the season... Are you happy to be back after your time away? Definitely. I really enjoyed my time at Sheffield United but it’s good to be back with the girls, and back at the biggest club in the world. You were there with former Red Naomi Hartley – was it good to see her again? Yeah, it was. I played with her for England Under-19s last season, so being with her was something that helped me settle into the squad a lot more easily. She helped me out a lot with the travelling aspect as well, because we’d travel from the same area – even for little things like that, it’s nice to have someone you know there. You had a few games with Mollie Green, too... We know our standards and it’s nice having a player like Mollie, who knows what we expect of each other. It was only a few games but playing with her was something I

really enjoyed. If I made a mistake, she’d tell me what to do and put me in my place, which I really appreciated. A few of our players have spent time on loan at Sheffield United, this season and last. Do you think it’s a good club to be at? In terms of development, it’s a great club. The staff there are unbelievable and the squad of players create such a nice environment, which is exactly what you need to develop and grow. Obviously, the men’s team are doing well too, and you can see that feeds into the women’s team. I think that’s really important. How was the whole experience for you? I really enjoyed it. The girls there allowed me to be who I am, on and off the pitch. They allowed me to express myself and that was something I needed, in terms of ⊲

Back out on the training ground last month after returning to the Reds, where Aimee continues to learn from her more experienced team-mates

growing in confidence. The manager [Carla Ward] and the coaches were unbelievable for me. They were so welcoming and allowed me to thrive, and I was able to really reach the top of my game. You had a pretty decent scoring record there too, with six in 18 games from the middle of the park... I think it was something I needed to add to my game. Playing higher up the pitch allowed me to get off more shots on goal, and being able to score was something that gave me even more confidence. I knew I needed to do it and being able to do so was a big positive for me. What else did you learn during your time there? I learnt a lot about myself in terms of confidence. It allowed me to really see how I am as a player and gain more confidence, and see how well I can perform when I am confident. You clearly impressed, to have been recalled so soon. Did you expect to be coming back? Not at all. I had a meeting with Casey and Glen [Harris] around Christmas time. They said they were really happy with how my loan was going, so they were going to keep me there for the rest of the season. I wasn’t expecting it but now I’m very happy to be back and fighting for a shirt.

What did you miss most while you were away? At Sheffield United, we were fighting for promotion in the Championship, so every game was a big game, but obviously you’re not playing against the same sort of players as in the WSL. No disrespect, but it’s a higher quality of opposition in the WSL. You were still training here while you were out on loan – what was that like? It was the best of both worlds. I was getting 90 minutes each week with Sheffield, but also training against the standard of midfield players at United, like Hayley Ladd and Jackie Groenen, which helped me to improve even further. As well as the game time, I was able to train against those world-class players and develop my game. Are they two players you’re looking to learn from? Definitely. I played with Hayley at Bristol City for a short time and I knew from that point she was an unbelievable player. Learning off people like those two, with all their experience, is something that a young player like me can really thrive from, and something I need to take full advantage of in training. You mentioned recently how good is it to be around such players on a matchday...

the squad be as good as they can. If I’m on top of my game competing against the other midfielders, then hopefully they’ll be better and improve as a consequence, which will hopefully lead to better results. What have you made of Manchester United’s season so far? I think it was everything we expected it to be. Obviously we were in the Championship last year, but a lot of the players had played in the WSL the season before that. But I think we’re doing really well. We’re in the top half. There are some results we know we could have improved upon but, for our first season here, it’s been a good start.

“LEARNING OFF HAYLEY AND JACKIE, WITH ALL THEIR EXPERIENCE, IS SOMETHING I CAN REALLY THRIVE FROM” Obviously when I was out on loan, I was still around them in training, day in, day out. But when it comes to matches... in training, you’re against each other; in matches, you’re against the world’s best players, especially in the WSL. People who have been nominated for the Ballon d’Or. Watching how they prepare for games is something that, again, as a young player I need to learn from, because I’ve not been in that many situations where I’ve come up against that sort of player. Seeing how they prepare themselves is something I need to take into account, because it’s only going to make me a better player. What are your aims now for the rest of 2019/20? I want to fight for my shirt and try to get minutes, but also to do as much as I can in terms of training to help

You’ve also played in the WSL with Bristol City, in 2017/18. How excited are you to be back? Really excited. I was a lot younger last time and the other teams and players felt a lot stronger physically at that age, and I didn’t have much experience. I’m really happy to be back in this position. I think I’ve developed technically and physically, so now is the perfect time for me to be back, and hopefully that’s something I can show on the pitch. Do you have good memories of that season? I really enjoyed my time at Bristol. As I said, I played with Hayley, and also with Millie Turner, so having them around me here helps me, too. In terms of the WSL, I really enjoyed playing against people I had aspired to be like when I was a kid. It was something I didn’t expect, but those experiences have made me a better player. Did you have any particular role models as a kid? One of my first games [for Bristol City] was against Arsenal, and I was marking Jordan Nobbs and Fara Williams. Growing up wanting to be a midfielder, they were the two main ones. I was in awe of them, playing against them thinking it was a dream, and how had I come this far? But it makes you realise anything’s possible if you put your mind to it. ⊲

INTERVIEW

Picking up her first taste of WSL experience with Bristol City in 2017

How tough a challenge will Chelsea be this afternoon? Really tough. We only played them a week ago and we know we can match, if not better, them. We need to go into it as we did last time but just be a bit more clinical in front of goal, because as we proved, time and time again, we can match the top teams. It’s now just about putting it into results. We’ve had two 1-0 defeats against them so far – what do you think has made the difference? Both times, Chelsea haven’t created many chances, but the ones they have, they’ve taken. That’s something we’re working towards as a squad. When we create a chance, we need to take it. That’s what the top teams are doing and that’s maybe why there’s a slight gap between them and us at the moment. We definitely have goalscorers in our team and I think once one goes in, they’ll all start to go in. It’s almost about creating a bit of luck for ourselves. What do you like to do away from football? I don’t really get much spare time because I’m studying sports science part-time at university, so whenever I’m

All smiles last May as she holds the Championship trophy – on a day when Aimee scored her first Reds goal, against Lewes

“I’M STUDYING SPORTS SCIENCE PART-TIME. IT’S A LOT OF STRESS, BUT I WANT TO STAY AROUND SPORT IN THE FUTURE” not playing football I’m usually at uni or doing uni work. It’s a lot of stress, but I definitely want to stay around sport in the future, so I thought I’d do this to keep my options open. And finally, what does it mean to you to be a Manchester United player? It’s the biggest club in the world. When you wear that badge on your chest, you’re filled with pride. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play here, and when you think of it like that, you’ve got to take every chance you can to do well and win trophies. I definitely feel proud to be here and hopefully I can show what that means to me when I’m playing.

PUSHING THE BOUNDARIES Local schoolgirls take a special journey to help them explore future careers Female pupils from Manchester United Foundation partner schools took a train journey with a difference recently, as part of a STEM initiative with women who hold some of the rail industry’s top management positions. The career-focused event was hosted by Community Rail Lancashire in collaboration with the Foundation’s ‘Next Move’ employability and skills programme, allowing the schoolgirls the opportunity to explore careers in rail and highlighting the disproportionate numbers of men (84 per cent) and women working within the sector. As they travelled from Manchester Piccadilly to Liverpool Lime Street, the pupils from Stretford High School, Loreto High School in Chorlton and Dean Trust Ardwick (some of whom had never travelled by train before) questioned the female role models who are excelling in a male-dominated industry. Onboard there were top engineers and senior managers from some of the UK’s largest rail networks, including the head of performance and customer relationships, and the head of route human resources. On arrival at Liverpool, the group were greeted by another inspirational female, the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Anna Rothery – the UK’s first black, female Lord Mayor – who answered questions on her own journey to the top of a traditionally male-orientated profession. The students then headed to the Museum of Liverpool for interactive workshops and a look around the exhibits. Councillor Anna Rothery said: “Events like this are crucial if we’re to ensure our young women know

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool spoke to the girls as part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative

what their potential is in predominantly male-oriented professions, and it’s important they get a glimpse into the lifestyle and professions. I worked in a very male dominated workplace, so it was the norm for me. I’d say, be bold and brave and push the boundaries!” Rob Martin, employability and skills manager for the Foundation, said of the ‘Next Move’ programme: “Next Move aims to empower young people with different skills and experiences so that they can make informed decisions about their future. This trip, working with Community Rail Lancashire, has been a great example of that.” Nawaha, a year 8 student at Stretford High School, said: “Today we’ve learnt that there is a lot of variety within the railway industry, which we didn’t know about before. It’s more than just engineering or being a conductor, there’s so many other paths you can take.” Medina, 13, added: “Working in the railway used to be quite patriarchal but now, as time progresses, there are a lot more females getting into the industry. I’m definitely considering a job in the railway after today.”

A WSL, League Cup and FA Cup winner during her three seasons with Manchester City, Isle of Bute-born Ross returned to England’s North West last July after spending 2018/19 with West Ham. Having also netted 60 goals in 130 caps for Scotland, Jane’s vast experience has proved beneficial to such a youthful Reds squad, and she has four goals in 16 appearances to date for Casey Stoney’s side.

OPPOSITION

The Blues were far too good for West Ham at Kingsmeadow last Sunday

TODAY’S VISITORS

CHELSEA

Today brings a third meeting of the season against Chelsea, with Emma Hayes’s in-form Blues well placed to pick up silverware on three fronts... It’s a familiar setting for United this afternoon, with a home encounter against Chelsea coming just 11 days after the Blues visited Leigh Sports Village in the Continental League Cup. Emma Hayes’s side claimed a second 1-0 victory over United this season that night and are set to present another tough challenge, sitting second in the WSL table and unbeaten in their 13 league outings so far. Chelsea have won their previous seven in all competitions, including last weekend’s 8-0 thumping of West Ham. That took them on to 42 goals in the league – five more than the next highest tally – and leaves the Blues just one point off top spot with a game in hand. Their impressive run hasn’t gone unnoticed, with Hayes and Beth England picking up the Manager and Player of the Month awards respectively for January (see right for more on the latter’s blistering form).

But there is cause for hope. Chelsea may have only dropped points on two occasions during the current campaign, but both draws came against teams in the bottom four. They needed an injury-time equaliser to salvage a point against Brighton in September, and ended 2019 by being held 1-1 away to Liverpool, a team that looks set to be embroiled in a relegation battle. Like ourselves, Chelsea have also drawn with Reading, in the Continental Cup group stage, eventually losing in a penalty shoot-out to suffer their only defeat

R WIN S”

OPPOSITION

Reiten, signed last May, has been a regular supplier of assists

of 2019/20. Today’s game clearly remains a hugely challenging fixture, however, with Hayes overseeing wins over title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal, beating the latter home and away. Our opponents also boast incredible strength in depth. The demolition of the Hammers came despite the absence of big names such as Sam Kerr and Ji So-yun, both away on international duty, and Fran Kirby, who has not played since November due to illness. All three are likely to again be missing today, but as we witnessed two weeks ago, there are plenty of top-quality options ready to step in.

MJELDE THE MATCHWINNER England’s incredible scoring form makes her the main danger and she is ably supported by Norwegian duo Maren Mjelde and Guro Reiten, who have four WSL goals apiece, as well as Wales captain Sophie Ingle. Mjelde has been the matchwinner in both meetings between United and Chelsea to date, while Reiten is tied for most assists in the division with eight. Switzerland international Ramona Bachmann and 16-year-old forward Emily Murphy each got off the mark in the league against West Ham and Hayes was full of praise for both in a success she described as “relentless.” It’s been extremely tight in our two clashes so far and the United defenders will need to be on their toes against a hugely dangerous outfit.

30_31_v3.oppo.SMCGIM.indd 5

ONE TO WATCH BETH ENGLAND

THE MANAGER EMMA HAYES

The prolific striker netted twice against West Ham last time out to take her league tally to 12 for the campaign, second only to Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema. England has scored in seven consecutive WSL matches, managing 10 goals in that time and matching her personal best seasonal total in the process – feats that have put her in sight of Nikita Parris’s all-time top-flight record of 49. England has also, quite aptly, made a strong start to her international career with the Lionesses, making her debut last August and finding the net twice in her five appearances to date.

Hayes recently made history as she led the Blues into the Continental Cup final for the first time in their history with victory over United. “I want to win,” she said afterwards. “Winning breeds more winning, that’s what I’ve learnt. Getting on a roll is important. There’s a hunger in our group that wasn’t there last year. There’s a stronger mentality.” That’s certainly been evident on the pitch with the club’s near-perfect record, and Hayes’s side have a real shot at securing multiple honours for the third season during her time as boss, having clinched the league and FA Cup Double in 2015 and 2018.

Last weekend’s draw against Reading saw a new addition to United’s 2019/20 roster: 18-year-old midfielder Rebecca May. Having joined United’s Regional Talent Club aged eight, before rising through every age group with the Reds, Rebecca stepped up to our U21s at the start of this season, before becoming the 21st Red to feature for the seniors in 2019/20 as she replaced Jane Ross at Adams Park.
