WELCOME The Women’s FA Cup begins at last for Casey Stoney’s Reds, and the draw couldn’t have pulled out a bigger tie for starters: United v City. We’ve already met the Blues in the WSL and Continental League Cup, of course, and these are interesting times for City, with a change of management on the horizon (p30). One player to feature in both previous derbies was Amy Turner, and she shares her 2019/20 ambitions, plus her FA Cup memories, in today’s big interview (p20). Amy T was chuffed with a long-overdue clean sheet last weekend as we beat Spurs, on a freezing, foggy day that saw Casey get the hard-warmers out (right). You can read about that, as well as our League Cup win against Brighton, on p7, with the head coach and skipper (happy birthday for this week, Zel!) reflecting on the back-to-back wins in their respective columns (p4 and p11). Once you’re done with all that, sit back and try to relax – it could be a tense one...

HEAD COACH

CASEY STONEY THE HEAD COACH’S COLUMN

Nick Cushing and his City squad deserve the utmost credit for their success, but we know we can cause them problems today, as we did back in October... Today we welcome FA Cup holders Manchester City to Leigh Sports Village for our fourth-round tie – but before getting started with my usual programme notes, I want to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Nick Cushing and all he’s done for the women’s game in this country. Though we have at least one more fixture against our local rivals this season, today will be the last time Nick is in the opposition dugout before moving on to a new challenge. Nick raised the level in terms of coaching in this league. The detail he got into his players meant everybody else had to step up. He deserves a lot of credit for what he’s achieved and the women’s game will miss him. He’s brought an excellent group of players together. You look through their squad and it’s a host of senior internationals – the likes of Ellen White and Pauline Bremer up front, and in midfield one of England’s most capped players in Jill Scott. It’s a tough draw for our first match in the competition this season but we’ll take confidence from our 2-0 win against them in October. The atmosphere here that

day was incredible and we want to recreate that today. Knockout matches always bring different pressures – and this one has a little extra in it given it’s a Manchester derby – but we enjoy the challenge. The FA Cup is a special competition and we want to go as far as we can. Three points and a clean sheet against Spurs last week to follow up from the win against Brighton was so important for us coming into this run of difficult fixtures. Momentum is crucial at this stage of the season and even though it wasn’t our best performance, it was a gritty one. We rode our luck at times and we’ll have to be tighter at the back today if we are to keep City at bay. Having said that, we know the threat we pose, and not just from one area. It’s been brilliant to see us sharing the goals around and not relying on just a couple of players. We’re also scoring different types of goals. We’ll need everyone contributing as the big matches keep coming. Enjoy the game.

United leapfrogged last season’s Championship rivals Tottenham in the WSL standings on Sunday, thanks to a 3-0 win in misty conditions in Leigh. Katie Zelem continued her great run of form as the catalyst in midfield, providing two goals and an assist, while Jess Sigsworth was also on target. A possessioncontrolling performance from Casey Stoney’s side limited opposition attacks, and the only blemish on proceedings was a red card awarded to Ella Toone. It was clear from the start that the midfield trio of Zelem, Leah Galton and Jackie Groenen would cause problems. Groenen found Zelem with a crossfield ball, and in turn, our captain delivered a ball to Galton at the back post but her header was straight at the keeper. After half an hour, Tottenham registered their first shot on target courtesy of captain Josie Green, who forced Mary Earps into a difficult save. Another chance fell to United when the ball arrived at Zelem’s feet on the edge of the Spurs area but although our no.10 calmly set herself, the shot was too tame to trouble Chloe Morgan. Just after half-time the best chance of the game fell to Tottenham’s Rianna Dean. A perfectly threaded through ball from Gemma Davis found Dean in space but the striker couldn’t get the ball past Earps. ⊲ Manchester United Women v Manchester City Women 07

Two minutes later, United were provided with a golden opportunity to open the scoring after a scuffle in the area resulted in the referee pointing to the spot. Zelem stepped up and slotted her kick into the corner. On the hour mark, United grabbed a second goal after a corner was whipped in by Zelem, causing problems for the Spurs defence, who struggled to clear, and Sigsworth was on hand to prod the ball home. Tottenham almost responded instantly with a quick kick-off and struck the crossbar with an audacious effort from long range, minutes before Dean’s left-footed shot from out wide struck the United post. Zelem fired home her second goal in the closing stages. A foul on the edge of the area from Hannah Godfrey saw her name enter the referee’s book and it turned from bad to worse for Tottenham as Zelem lifted the free-kick over the wall and into the back of the net. As the game entered injury-time, a red card was shown to Toone by referee Edward Duckworth following a brief flare-up with the Spurs players but this was really only a footnote to a fine day’s work for Stoney’s Reds. Four days earlier, United progressed to the semis of the Continental League Cup with a 2-1 win over Brighton. An encouraging start for the hosts was made to count in the 14th minute, as Zelem’s cross fell perfectly for Abbie McManus to tap in her maiden United goal. While United were on top for the majority of the half, the Seagulls still provided a threat at the other end, and Hope Powell’s side picked up where they left off after half-time, winning a penalty within five minutes of the restart after a Amy Turner foul in the box. Ini-Abasi Umotong stepped up and her strike rattled off the crossbar, to the relief of most inside Leigh Sports Village. The vital second goal came for United with 15 minutes remaining. Zelem provided the inch-perfect ball into Sigsworth’s path, and the attacker centred it to Jane Ross, who casually knocked it into the net. The Seagulls ensured it was nervy finish by netting a late penalty, following a challenge by Ladd on Umotong. Substitute Kayleigh Green dispatched confidently from 12 yards but the visitors couldn’t add to the score as Stoney’s Reds moved into the last four of the competition for the second time in as many years, with Chelsea awaiting in this season’s semi-finals.

CAPTAIN

KATIE ZELEM THE CAPTAIN’S COLUMN

Moving back up to fourth in the league has given us all a boost heading into a huge few days in two cup competitions, with City first up before Chelsea... Getting our first league win of 2020 against Spurs last weekend was a great feeling. It was a win we really needed, in difficult conditions too. It was obviously nice to get on the scoresheet also – a good way to start my birthday celebrations! I sometimes get asked about taking penalties and free-kicks and whether I have a plan as soon as the whistle goes. I usually have a bit of an idea but I always take each situation into consideration and see what the goalkeeper gives me too. Penalties, I decide when I step up. Free-kicks, there’s more to think about: where it is, the set-up of the wall and

“OUR AIM IS TO PROGRESS AND GET TO WEMBLEY FOR THE FIRST TIME. IT’S A DREAM FOR A LOT OF THE GIRLS”

which option is going to give me the best opportunity to score. Ultimately though, it was about getting the points to move us back above Spurs into fourth in the WSL table, behind the three teams fighting it out for the league title. One of those teams is Manchester City, our opponents in the FA Cup today, and another is Chelsea, who we face on Wednesday in the semi-final of the Continental League Cup, which will be a massive night here at Leigh. On the one hand, past games are irrelevant when it comes to knockout football; it’s winner takes all on the day. Having said that, we’ll be going into our third derby of the season with a winning mentality given our performance against City here in October. They are a really strong side but our aim is to progress in the FA Cup and get to Wembley for the first time. It’s a dream for a lot of the girls to play at Wembley. So we’ll be giving it everything today, and we know you’ll do the same to make it an incredible atmosphere.

TIES BLUES AWAIT IN CONTI CUP FIFTEEN TO FOLLOW

Four days to go until semi, with final venue confirmed The last four of the Continental League Cup will see Casey Stoney’s Reds face Chelsea here at Leigh Sports Village, with the high-stakes tie to take place this coming Wednesday, 29 January (kick-off 7.30pm). It’ll be a first-ever home fixture for United Women against the Blues, with the semi-final taking place just 11 days before Emma Hayes’s side play here in the Women’s Super League. The fixture completes a run of five straight home outings for United to start 2020, with the winners of

the tie – which must be decided on the night – to face either Manchester City or Arsenal in the final on Saturday 29 February. It was confirmed last week that this year’s League Cup final will be played at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with the 30,445-capacity ground (above) becoming the eighth stadium to host the showpiece fixture, following on from Bramall Lane in 2018/19. “It is an iconic venue in the

UnitedThe reached first ofthe twoquarter-final big home stage last with season exiting dates thebefore Blues takes the competition away at Reading place on Wednesday night

heart of the country, and is fitting for the conclusion of the competition,” said Football Association women’s professional game director Kelly Simmons. With such a prize at stake, a large crowd is expected here on Wednesday evening, and supporters are urged to book tickets in advance at ManUtd.com/muwtickets (£6 adults/£3 concessions). Tickets are 50p more if purchased on the night, and season tickets are not valid for this fixture. If you can’t make it along to Leigh to cheer the Reds on, check the BT Sport and MUTV schedules for coverage of the tie. With the Reds’ men’s team in action in their own League Cup semi-final on the same night, MUTV coverage will be restricted to highlights. The Continental League Cup final will be broadcast from the City Ground by BT Sport (5.30pm kick-off).

TOMORROW

Busy Sunday in Women’s FA Cup The latest United v City contest is the only Women’s FA Cup tie taking place today, with the remaining 15 fourth-round fixtures to be played tomorrow. The standout Sunday games include Championship high-flyers Sheffield United – including on-loan Reds Mollie Green and Aimee Palmer – against WSL side Birmingham (1pm), while Aston Villa – top of the second tier – host Brighton (3pm). Aside from today’s game, the only other all-WSL fixture takes place at Rush Green Stadium in east London, where last season’s finalists West Ham (above) host Arsenal (1pm). The lowest-ranked side left in the Cup, Billericay Town, head to Championship side Lewes (1pm). All ties need to be settled on the day, with 30 minutes’ extra-time and penalties deciding the winner, if required.

INTERVIEW

“THERE’S A LOT OF

EMOTION...

WE KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS TO THE FANS” Having featured in both of our two previous derby fixtures, Amy Turner can’t wait for part three against City today – in a competition she has unfinished business to attend to...

How does the win against City earlier this season rank among your achievements at the club? It’s one of my main highlights, if not the highlight. We played so well that day and executed the gameplan very strongly. It felt like we were in control and to play like that against such a top team was really pleasing. We controlled the ball, frustrated them and we proved to ourselves that we are capable of competing against the best sides. Keeping a clean sheet was also massive too.

What was your reaction when Manchester City came out of the hat in the FA Cup? A mixed one. You want to test yourself against the best. If we’re going to reach the final and win it, which we believe we can, you have to beat the best. We knew we’d have to play City, or one of the top three at least, at some point on the road to the final. It would have been nice to avoid them until later on but we’ve beaten them at home before, and I think we’re more than capable of doing it again.

They’re the FA Cup holders so would it be even more special to end their reign? We’re not really thinking about that, to be honest. We got to the quarter-finals last year and we were disappointed with our performance when we went out, against Reading. We were ahead twice and ended up losing. I think the motivation comes from going a step further than what we did last year. The focus is on us and doing ⊲

What are Manchester derbies like to play in? It’s still quite a new experience for us, but there’s a lot of emotion. We’ve only faced them twice, but there’s been a lot of anticipation leading up to the game. We know what it means to the fans, and you can sense the atmosphere on the pitch, but as players we try to go into every game with the same mentality: to work hard, get the basics right and stick to the gameplan. But a derby adds excitement.

INTERVIEW

Our no.4 can’t hide her delight after the Reds score a second against Spurs last Sunday

our best, with the added encouragement of knowing we didn’t quite reach our potential in the Cup last season. Their manager is leaving soon – do you think that will make them more motivated to get a win? It seems as though he’s well liked at the club and I’m sure the players will play for him, but I don’t think that will be any different to what they’ve done previously. They respect their manager and I’m sure they’ll want to send him off on a high but we’re not there to provide any sentimental value. We want to get the win for ourselves. It’ll be our fourth straight home game – how is it playing in front of our fans at Leigh Sports Village? It’s a great atmosphere. We’ve got, I think, the best fan base in the league. They show up in their numbers, particularly for home games, and it makes for a great environment to play in. You hear the fans shouting and they’ll stick around at the end of the game to speak to you, get photos and autographs, and that’s something really special. We’ll never take them for granted. We really appreciate their support and we know, as well as they do, to win the derby would be massive for everyone. You played in the 2015 final with Notts County, against Chelsea. How was that day for you?

I think it was the first time the final had been played at Wembley and there were over 30,000 fans there which, at the time, broke the record. It was an amazing experience and one I’ll never forget. But it was bittersweet, because we lost [1-0] and didn’t play particularly well. On a personal level, I felt like I had a good game. To play in a final at Wembley is something I’ve dreamt about for a long time. Now, I’m thinking if we get that far, which is what we’re setting our sights on, I want to make sure I’m on the winning team next time. I think we’re capable of doing it. How special is this competition for players? Really special. We spoke about our goals at the start of the year and set out that we wanted to get to the two cup finals. We didn’t do that last season but we’ve strengthened the squad and we’ve improved a lot. Good cup runs are really important. We can put on good performances against top teams and I don’t think anyone would be surprised if we did reach a final. Manchester United is based on winning trophies. We’d love to be a part of that and create our own history. It’s also big weekend for your sister, Lucy, playing for Barnsley against Tottenham… This is the furthest they’ve ever got, so they’re really excited to face a WSL team. I was a little disappointed

who has played in so many massive games, so I’m sure Casey will be passing on her experience to the whole squad to make sure we’re all ready to perform at our best.

Agony for Amy – as well as Ellen White, now of City – as Notts County are beaten at Wembley in 2015

“[THE 2015 FA CUP FINAL] WAS BITTERSWEET... I WANT TO MAKE SURE I’M ON THE WINNING TEAM NEXT TIME” we didn’t get to play against each other! That would have been nice but it’s obviously a great occasion for them. They’ve done so well to get to this point. The pressure’s off and I’m sure they’ll enjoy it. Lucy’s a very good player. I think she could play at a higher level if she wanted and I’m sure she’ll give a good account of herself. After that, who knows what avenues could open for her [right]. We have quite a youthful squad – what will playing in these big ties do for the young players? It’s massive. It’s a great experience and, even though we have quite a few young players, we also have ones who have played in big games before, so we do have some experience. Having a good cup run will be a lesson for the youngsters in particular, but we’ve got a manager

How do you think the players have developed overall this season? We’ve grown a lot since last year. We needed to improve because the gap between the Championship and WSL is quite considerable. We had already tested ourselves in the odd game against WSL clubs but to do it consistently was always going to be a big ask. I think the win over Spurs gave us all a massive lift, because we hadn’t been performing particularly well in the last few games. But we were better at controlling the ball, which we will need when we have to be brave against better opposition. I think that’s probably an area we have struggled with, but we’ve done a lot of work to try and relax and calm down when in possession. There’s still room for growth. We want to try and keep the clean sheet mentality we had at the start of the campaign. I think that got lost a little around Christmas, but we’re trying to bring it back to ensure that we finish the second half of the season as best we can. You usually played at centre-back last year and have been on the right this season. How have you found that change? I’ve enjoyed it, although it felt a little strange at first. I do quite a lot of extras after training with our analyst to make sure I understand the position and have that awareness for decision making. I think I’ve grown into it as time has gone on and I’m confident playing in either role now. I’ll give everything for the team, no matter what position I’m playing in. Whatever they need from me, I try and contribute in a positive way. You’ve had experience of captaining the side in the past. How proud did you feel after that? It’s something I’d never take for granted. If you put the ⊲

armband on at any point, it’s obviously a special moment, and having the added responsibility of being vice-captain has improved my game considerably. It’s given me a lot of confidence. The players believe in me and so does the manager. I just try to lead by example. I might not be the loudest player but I’m someone who will always give their all. That doesn’t change, whether I’m captain or not. What do you like to do on your days off? I usually take my dog for a walk. I’ve got a Cockapoo called Betsy who takes up a lot of my time. I try to switch off from football and discover new dog-friendly coffee shops. I live quite a boring life, to be honest [Laughs]! What’s the team spirit like among the players? It’s really high. I’ve never been part of a team that gets on so well. I think sometimes teams say that and they probably don’t mean it, but it’s 100 per cent the case here. We all get on and we’re all good friends outside of football, which really helps. We’re all striving towards the same goals and morale is high at the moment. It maybe dipped a little bit after Christmas following the Bristol City defeat, West Ham too – we weren’t happy

Amy insists morale is high within the squad following a difficult start to the year

“REPRESENTING YOUR COUNTRY IS REALLY SPECIAL... I HOPE THERE’S STILL TIME FOR ME TO ADD TO THOSE FOUR CAPS” with those results. But that’s because we hold ourselves accountable to really high standards. If we have an off-day or an off-session, we take it to heart quite a bit, because we want to get better. There’s definitely a lot more to come from this team. What’s been the highlight of your career so far? I was lucky enough to get four senior caps for England back in 2015. That was a really proud moment for myself and my family. Representing your country is really special and there was a time where I probably didn’t think it was going to happen. I hope the ship hasn’t sailed on it just yet. I hope there’s still time for me to add to those four caps. It was definitely a highlight, for sure.

SIOBHAN CHAMBERLAIN

SHIV’S Our no.1 has an FA Cup winner’s medal from 2014, and she knows that victory today would be a massive step towards this year’s final for United... It was great to see Siobhan lines up for Bristol in the team get back to the 2011 FA Cup final, played winning ways last week, at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry in both the league and cup, to properly kick off 2020... at last! The performance against Brighton in the Conti Cup could have been better, but at the end of the day it’s a cup tie, and you just need to make sure you win and get yourself in the hat for the next round. Job done. I feel like I missed half of the Spurs match last Sunday thanks to the fog, which was really heavy, but thankfully all three goals were right in front of me in the second half! It was great to see another positive response from the team, plus a clean sheet, of course, which we all like to see. Today we start our 2019/20 Women’s FA Cup campaign, and it’s a competition that brings back lots of memories for me. In 2011 and 2013 I reached the FA Cup final with Bristol Academy. Although we lost both games to Arsenal it was fantastic to be a part of, especially as we were such huge underdogs in both games. Then in 2014 I won the Cup with Arsenal. I played in every game up until the final so that victory was kind of bittersweet for me. It’s incredible to see how the

tournament has changed in the last few years, though – in the 2013 final I played in front of fewer than 5,000 supporters at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium, in 2014 there were 15,000 at Stadium MK, and these days over 40,000 fans head to Wembley for the final. Looking at the crowds the Lionesses have been bringing to Wembley of late, I’m certain the attendance will be even higher for the 2020 final, and a win today would take us one step closer to being there – while knocking out one of the favourites who happen to big our local rivals! So what an incentive we have to reach the last 16. City have been in great form lately, of course, so it will no doubt be a tough game, but we proved our ability in the Conti Cup win against them, and with our home crowd behind us again we should go out there with confidence. It’s not just the FA Cup where we’ve got a tough draw, with Chelsea next up on Wednesday in the Conti Cup. Emma Hayes’s side were ruthless in their WSL victory over Arsenal last weekend, winning 4-1, but thankfully we have home advantage and I’m sure it’ll be another great occasion here at LSV. Exciting times!

Capped 39 times by Scotland and part of their World Cup squad last year, today full-back Kirsty will be hoping to start a third successive game for the Reds for the first time since October. Regularly selected on the right of defence last term, this season has seen the 26-year-old line up more often on the left – the position in which she first made her name with former club Hibernian.

Celebration time last Sunday after Keira Walsh had doubled City’s lead against Birmingham

TODAY’S VISITORS

MANCHESTER CITY Last weekend’s WSL win took City back to top spot, but they also have big cup ambitions as they get set for a change of manager next month... Getting familiar this, isn’t it? Another competition and another derby. With one win apiece it’s been honours even so far, but there’s no doubting that today is a big test for Casey Stoney’s Reds. City have won 10 of their last 11 in all competitions and currently top the WSL. They’re holders of both the FA Cup and Continental League Cup, and have suffered just one defeat in three seasons in the former, having also lifted the trophy in 2017. In fact, since 2013, the only team to have beaten them in the FA Cup are Chelsea – remarkably, the Blues have done so on four occasions. But there are reasons for optimism. Only one team have beaten City in domestic cup competitions in their last 18 matches: United. October’s 2-0 defeat here in Leigh was also their first by more than one goal since April 2018. The first meeting between the teams, in September, was only settled by a Caroline Weir wonder goal, despite the gulf in top-flight experience at the time.

As expected, Nick Cushing’s squad are once again challenging for multiple honours this season. They, too, are in the League Cup semi-finals, where they’ll face Arsenal, and last time out in the WSL they knocked Arsenal off the top with a 2-0 triumph at Birmingham. City’s European hopes were ended by Spanish champions Atletico Madrid back in October, but domestically, the Blues’ form is almost perfect, with 15 victories out of a possible 18. In terms of attacking threat, German international Pauline Bremer has recovered superbly from a broken

England international Scott brings real experience and no little class to the City midfield

leg that kept her out for almost the entirety of 2018, netting 18 goals in 17 games in all competitions in 2019/20. England’s Ellen White struck after just 34 seconds against Birmingham last weekend and now needs just three goals to equal Nikita Parris’s all-time WSL scoring record. The squad boasts 20 full internationals, half of whom were called up to the 2019 World Cup. Among them are a pair of England centurions in Steph Houghton (see right) and Jill Scott. The latter has been with City for just over six years since their maiden WSL campaign, being named in the Team of the Year on three occasions, and the 32-year-old midfielder remains a key figure.

EXTRA MOTIVATION TO DERBY Change is on the way, however, with manager Cushing set to leave his role in early February. It should add extra spice to the fixture as his players aim to give him a win in his final derby. “Maybe the emotion and complexity of saying I’m leaving could have affected the squad,” the boss recently told City’s website. “But they are so professional. We’ve got some really experienced players and some very motivated youngsters, and they have shown they have a huge desire to win trophies, whether I’m here or not. United will be difficult. We lost there earlier this season even though we played quite well, and our players will be very motivated. We’re the holders and we want to make sure we’re in the next round.”

30_31_oppo.CGIM.indd 5

ONE TO WATCH STEPH HOUGHTON

HEAD COACH NICK CUSHING

Captain of both club and country, Houghton, 31, is a true legend of the game. She arrived at City in 2014 after a trophy-laden spell with Arsenal and has continued the habit with her current side, helping City to win a WSL title, two FA Cups and three League Cups. Now a commanding centre-back, she originally came through as a striker and has retained an eye for goal, netting a decent total of 19 goals across her WSL career. She’s also earned 117 England caps, playing in three World Cups, and in 2016 was rewarded with an MBE for services to football.

After more than six years in charge, the Chester-born 35-year-old is now enjoying a swansong ahead of his upcoming departure to take up the assistant manager position at New York City FC’s men’s team. Next weekend’s home meeting with Arsenal will be his final game and he’ll leave behind a memorable legacy of success with his present employers, having won six major trophies and finishing in at least the top two of the WSL every year since 2014. Following his exit, current assistant manager Alan Mahon is set to take charge of the team for an interim period.

TOONE’S RUN TO END AFTER RED Just days after Millie Turner finally missed a United game (against Brighton through injury), our only other ever-present, Ella Toone, will see her 45-game run come to an end as a result of her red card against Tottenham last weekend. Of Ella’s appearances, 25 have come as starts, with 20 as sub – dating back to game no.1 in August 2018. Three of Ella’s 21 goals have come following her introduction from the bench.
