Access to Hanging Bridge via St Denys’ Bookshop Mon–Fri: 9am–5pm Sat: 9am- 2pm

The Cathedral has been delighted by the wonderful images capturing the decorative carvings, which allow visitors to see these medieval artworks in close detail, possibly for the first time in their 600-year history. A selection of Robert Watson’s photographs are on display under the 15th-century Hanging Bridge. This exhibition is sponsored by Harvey Nichols.

Sentence: A Work in Progress Artist: Alan O’Cain Until Sun 23 April Mon–Sat: 10am–4pm Sun: 1pm–4pm

This is a series of eight large artworks, each marking a year of one man’s sixteen year sentence in a New Jersey prison in the United States. ‘Sentence’ is inspired by my correspondence with a British man in his sixties serving a sixteen year prison sentence for securities fraud. Up until his incarceration he was a successful and highly-respected professional and family man, working in the US financial sector; a lover and collector of modern art.

When the irregularities of his company’s business accounting were uncovered, he was advised by a legal team to plead guilty, never expecting to be given a sixteenyear prison sentence, with a minimum of fourteen years before possible parole and immediate deportation to the UK. Shortly after he began the sentence, I began writing to him about his fascination with the meaning of art and also the devastating emotional impact of his sentence. The power of his written words overwhelmed me. I wanted to explore this artistically with him and suggested the present project. He and his very supportive wife immediately agreed, seeing this as a creative and positive chink in his wall of psychological darkness.’ Artist Alain O’Cain

1578–95 The Church receives its Third Charter from Queen Elizabeth I, the College is renamed Christ’s College. Dr John Dee, Alchemist and sometime spy for Elizabeth I is appointed Warden.

Broken Shells: A Medieval Sea Story A short play by Daisy Black Fri 30 June 5.30pm FREE / Donations welcome

In a little room in Rome, a bride sits at her window. The sill is covered with litter – a scrap of dried seaweed, the jagged edge of a pink scallop, scattered grains of sand. Her eyes are fixed on the ocean outside. She has always loved the sea. But now the day has come. Yesterday, she wept. She wept to be sent away from friends, sent to be a foreigner in strange land, and bound to a man she doesn’t know.

This reimagined version of Chaucer’s ‘Man of Law’s Tale’, tells of a woman repeatedly cast adrift in a rudderless boat and the persecution and kindness she finds in the strange lands she arrives in. Storyteller and academic Daisy Black brings to life Chaucer’s ‘Man of Law’s Tale’ – a tale of love, fear, violence and the queer, cold seas which roil and coil between nations.

This one-woman show tells a haunting, visceral, occasionally funny tale that will whirl around your imagination, lace your tongue with salt and take you across the sapphire-worked seas to walk with the creatures at the far edges of the map. The performance is one hour long and is suitable for ages 13 and up. Tickets www.amedievalseastory.eventbrite.co.uk This event will be delivered in partnership with the University of Manchester and the Medievalism in the Modern World conference.

Cathedral Services and Music Alongside the many events at the Cathedral, three acts of worship take place every day as they have for centuries. Regardless of whether you are a person of faith or not, you are most welcome to attend a service and come and enjoy the beauty and magnificence of the building. The Lady Chapel is reserved for quiet prayer or reflection. Please check the Cathedral website for the service times during school holidays. Turning of the Leaves The Turning of the Leaves ceremony takes place every alternate Wednesday at 12.45pm in the Regiment Chapel. A page is turned in the Book of Remembrance for the Duke of Lancaster Regiment and servicemen who have died in service are remembered. Evensong at Manchester Cathedral Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday 5.30pm / FREE Members of the public are more than welcome to attend the Evensong service which takes place in the Quire or just sit in the church and enjoy one of the ‘not to be missed’ musical performances in Manchester. The quality of the choir is recognised nationally with regular broadcasts on BBC Radio Three. The Cathedral is also fortunate to have the commitment and excellence of the members of the Voluntary Choir who sing at the Sunday Evensong service. We politely request that visitors do not walk around or take photographs during this service. Manchester Cathedral Choir Manchester Cathedral Choir is directed by the Organist and Master of the Choristers, Christopher Stokes. It is unusual in being one of only two in the UK that has a treble line made up of both boys and girls aged between 8 and 14. The Choristers are educated at Chetham’s School of Music, next door to the Cathedral. Choristerships Each year we look to offer choristerships to four girls or boys aged between 8 and 10. All of our choristers attend Chetham’s School of Music and as such receive an excellent musical and general education there, in addition to the first-class training from the Cathedral’s staff. Potential Choristers do not need any prior experience to audition for the Choir. We are looking for children who enjoy singing, being part of a close-knit team and who, with their parents, can commit to a demanding but immensely rewarding schedule. For an informal chat call Christopher Stokes on 0161 833 2220 extension 225.

2013 Cathedral closes for new underfloor heating system and ‘Pop-Up’ Cathedral opens. November 2013 Cathedral re-opens with the installation ceremony of the new Bishop of Manchester, David Walker.
