Welcome to the third Manchester International Festival
We’re delighted to present more than 20 world premieres and special events created by leading artists from around the world, some of which have been more than three years in the making. The Festival continues to support artists and creative thinkers to invent the cultural future, as well as explore different ways of presenting great works from the past. Alongside artists new to MIF, it’s a privilege to welcome back key figures from previous Festivals, all of whom have ambitious approaches to creating new work. We remain committed to our MIF Creative programme which invites major artists to work with local communities and we have enhanced our home on Albert Square to make it an even more welcoming place during the Festival.
My sincere thanks go to our partners and funders opposite. Their vital support and commitment make MIF possible and helps keep more than a third of the Festival free for audiences. The remarkable cooperation we receive from local, national and international commissioning partners allows our artists to realise their work and to tour it around the world, taking Manchester and MIF with them. I am very grateful to these extraordinary artists and to my talented MIF colleagues and volunteers who work tirelessly to bring the Festival to life. And I’m sincerely thankful to you our valued audience, who have helped put MIF at the heart of the British cultural map over the last five years. Alex Poots – Festival Director

Where do music, nature and technology meet? Björk introduces Biophilia, her most ambitious and exciting work to date. A multimedia project encompassing music, apps, internet, installations and live shows, Biophilia celebrates how sound works in nature, exploring the infinite expanse of the universe, from planetary systems to atomic structure. Björk will be performing Biophilia tracks and music from her genre-defying back catalogue with a small group of unique musical collaborators, including an award-winning Icelandic female choir. The show will feature a range of specially conceived and crafted instruments, among them a bespoke pipe organ that accepts digital information and a 30 foot pendulum that harnesses the earth’s gravitational pull to create musical patterns. In a special collaboration with MIF, the Biophilia show will travel to major cities around the world following the Manchester premiere. MIF will be working with young people in Manchester to explore the ideas behind Björk’s Bilophilia. For more details visit www.mif.co.uk

Doctor Dee is a new work composed by Damon Albarn and directed by Rufus Norris. In the age before science and magic parted company, Doctor John Dee was the ultimate Renaissance Man: astrologer, alchemist, mathematician and spy, he coined the term ‘British Empire’ and equipped the Elizabethan Court with the knowledge to make it manifest. The inspiration for both Marlowe’s Faust and Shakespeare’s Prospero, Dee studied the Heavens, he spoke with Archangels, and he paid a bitter personal price. Doctor Dee explores ritual and symbolism in this country, past and present, using John Dee – one of England’s greatest but largely forgotten men – as catalyst. Rufus Norris is a theatre and opera director whose West End and Broadway shows include Cabaret, Don Giovanni, Festen, Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Vernon God Little. Damon Albarn is a musician whose bands and projects include Blur, Gorillaz, The Good the Bad and the Queen and Monkey: Journey to the West for MIF07. Four years in the making, The Life and Death of Marina Abramovi´c began with a conversation between Abramovi´c and visionary director Robert Wilson. She asked him to direct her death and he agreed – but only if he could do so while she was alive. The result is a startling new piece for the stage that brings together the worlds of theatre, art and music to thrilling effect. Directed by Wilson, arguably the most influential theatre director of the last 40 years, Life and Death… features original and traditional music, including songs written and performed by the incomparable Antony (Antony & The Johnsons). It stars Abramovi´c, legendary screen and stage actor Willem Dafoe, plus an international cast of actors and performance artists, several returning from Marina Abramovi´c Presents in MIF 09. Capacity crowds experienced Abramovi´c’s now-legendary long durational group show at the 2009 Festival, while her residency at the Museum of Modern Art in New York saw 750,000 visitors pass through for an audience with this pioneer of performance art. The Life and Death of Marina Abramovi´c promises to be a once-in-a-generation cultural event.

Victoria Wood is one of our most distinctive and well loved comedic voices. MIF is thrilled to welcome her to the Festival to write and direct this new production, inspired by one of Manchester’s most iconic music events. It’s the summer of 1969 and Tubby, an overweight insurance man, and Enid, a buttoned up secretary, are back on the stage of the Free Trade Hall forty years after they first stood there as children, singing their hearts out with the Hallé orchestra. It’s the anniversary of the Manchester School Children’s Choir recording of Nymphs and Shepherds. But Tubby and Enid don’t sing any more they’re just doing a little interview for local television. And they’re not children with everything ahead of them, they’re two middle aged people who’ve let a lot of chances slip by. Two stories unfold: the children of 1929 are eagerly gearing up for their big day and in 1969, Tubby and Enid, now fiftyish, are trying to reconnect with who they were then, and who they could be now. The action switches between the Manchester of Tubby’s boyhood, and the Golden Eggs and Berni Inns of Manchester ‘69, as the memory of that day he sang propels Tubby to make one last stab at happiness. Together with a leading cast, That Day We Sang will feature a new Manchester Children’s Choir, formed especially by MIF Creative, for this major new production. Artists include: John Baldessari Allora and Calzadilla Cao Fei Simon Fujiwara Laura Lima Roman Ondák Lucy Raven Tino Sehgal Santiago Sierra Over the last two Festivals, with the iconoclastic Il Tempo del Postino and the epic Marina Abramovi´c Presents, MIF has established a reputation for commissioning some of the most exciting live art events to be experienced anywhere. 11 Rooms builds on that work, attracting the attention and energy of the international art world to Manchester for the duration of the Festival. Curators Klaus Biesenbach (MoMA PS1 and MoMA, New York) and Hans Ulrich Obrist (Serpentine Gallery, London) bring together 11 of the most interesting artists creating durational encounters to make new work for MIF. A woman makes her way through an empty city. At every crossing she stops. Should she wait or should she run? Should she wait for others or take the risk on her own? The city is Sarajevo, and the route the woman takes became known as Sniper Alley during the siege of the city endured by its citizens for 1395 days between 1992 and 1996. The woman, played by Spanish actress Maribel Verdu, is reliving the experience of the trauma of the siege. It is her individual journey in the collective memory of the city. This compelling 60 minute film is the first cinematic collaboration by two acclaimed artists from the Balkans, Šejla Kameri´c and Anri Sala, with music from Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique arranged and conducted by Ari Benjamin Meyers. Running alongside the world premiere of 1395 Days without Red is Projections: Works from The Artangel Collection. Featuring groundbreaking film and video installations from two decades of Artangel commissions, Projections includes High Wire, Catherine Yass’s multiscreen installation of a vertiginous walk in the sky; The Nightwatch by Francis Alÿs, which tracks the nocturnal wanderings of a fox through a gallery at night, and Atom Egoyan’s Steenbeckett, based on the moving monologue from Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape. Outside, Tony Oursler’s The Influence Machine, a spectral son-et-lumière with videos projected onto trees and smoke, haunts Whitworth Park after dark.
1395 Days without Red commissioned by Artangel with Manchester International Festival, Whitworth Art Gallery (Manchester), Fundació Museu D’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam), enabled by Han Nefkens, H+F patronage, Festival d’Automne (Paris), Arts Council England, European Cultural Foundation, Film Fund Sarajevo, Marian Goodman Gallery (New York), Hauser & Wirth (London & Zurich). Sinéad O’Connor has been making music, rejecting stereotypes and defying expectations for more than a quarter of a century. These three shows will feature the world premiere of new material from her forthcoming record Home. The album The Lion And The Cobra announced an uncompromising talent, and her devastatingly direct version of Nothing Compares 2 U made her an international star. As famous for her public statements as for her musical achievements, it’s O’Connor’s voice that endures: raw, spirituallycharged, both ancient and of-the-moment, it is a unique instrument and a sound to be treasured. Sited outdoors in the city centre, John Gerrard’s new piece Infinite Freedom Exercise (near Abadan, Iran) is an infinitely evolving hyper realistic virtual world, played out 24 hours a day. On the screen is a single figure, dressed in generic army fatigues, moving continuously through a series of exercises against the backdrop of a Persian landscape. Using 3D motion scanning, the exercises are captured from movement created in collaboration with award-winning choreographer Wayne McGregor. The result is a compelling and unsettling reflection on modernity, portraiture and history.

Located in Manchester’s Piccadilly Station, a place where everyday dramas are constantly acted out, Audio Obscura is an aural version of the camera obscura: a framed and heightened reflection of the passing world. In Audio Obscura, you will enter into the crowd to take part in an exploration of the overheard. What did she mean? Did he really say that? Does she realise what she is saying? You might wish you hadn’t listened or you might want to know more. You will look for stories and you might even find them. Lavinia Greenlaw is a prize-winning poet and novelist who also writes radio drama and libretti. Recent books include a memoir, The Importance of Music to Girls, and her fourth poetry collection, The Casual Perfect, which will be published by Faber in September 2011. Rickie Lee Jones, one of popular music’s most compelling storytellers, comes to MIF for a UK exclusive show at the Bridgewater Hall. For this very special evening Rickie Lee Jones will be performing her critically-acclaimed album Pirates in its entirety, exactly 20 years since its 1981 release, plus songs from across her career. With the release of her eponymous debut album in 1979 and the massive hit single Chuck E.’s In Love, Jones became an instant pop icon, dubbed ‘The Duchess of Coolsville’ by Time magazine. Her second album – the heartbreaking Pirates – followed, earning five star reviews across the board. Her 30-year career covers a dozen studio albums, records that see her versatile voice shift between jazz, blues, soul, country and rock with ease. Often surprising, frequently underrated, always worth watching – Rickie Lee Jones is a true rock’n’roll original.

Johnny Vegas returns to MIF with a new theatre show in the Festival’s own performance space, the Pavilion Theatre. He seems reluctant to discuss the concept behind his latest theatrical endeavour – “I’m reluctant to discuss the concept” (Johnny Vegas) – but expectations are high following the success of his darkly original show Interiors, the feel bad hit of MIF 07. Johnny’s versatility as a writer/performer means that stand up’s loss is theatre’s gain, and makes for a very exciting addition to the MIF 11 line-up. Get your tickets now. Richard Wagner reinvented the musical language of opera and created one of its greatest works with Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring Cycle). Sir Mark Elder leads the Hallé and a superb cast of singers in a two-night concert performance of Die Walküre. Continuing the Festival’s project of commissioning new contexts for existing work, The Madness of an Extraordinary Plan is a brand new dramatic prologue to The Ring Cycle. Written by Gerard McBurney, directed by Neil Bartlett and featuring three actors plus the Hallé and Sir Mark Elder, The Madness will be an illuminating experience for Wagner aficionados and newcomers alike. The Friday and Saturday performances are now almost sold out and MIF is delighted to announce a special free preview: on Thursday 14 July audiences will be able to see The Madness followed by Act 3 of Die Walküre, featuring Ride of the Valkyries, perhaps best known from the soundtrack of Apocalypse Now Now. This free event aims to welcome audiences who are new to Wagner to experience some of the most exciting music ever written, in arguably the best orchestral acoustic in the country. Paul Heaton (The Beautiful South, The Housemartins) has written one of the longest pop songs ever, The 8th, to be premiered at MIF 11. It’s a song in eight chapters, a look at the seven deadly sins through a series of scenes taking place in a single neighbourhood, a poor neighbourhood, one where a new, thoroughly modern, sin – The 8th – is able to insinuate itself into every person’s life... Given a theatrical narrative by award-winning playwright Che Walker (Royal Court and Young Vic) and directed by Paines Plough’s joint artistic director George Perrin, The 8th will feature a cast of performers from across musical genres who will join Heaton in the Pavilion Theatre for three very special shows. With rising global populations putting ever more pressure on farm land, the race is on to find new ways of feeding the world. Solutions to this issue include vertical farms; a revolutionary new idea to create high rise farms within the urban environment. As part of our long-term commitment to exploring urgent stories of our time, MIF plans an ambitious project to create the Uk’s first multi-storey vertical farm, located in a disused tower block right here in Manchester.

A new podcast series, specially commissioned by the Guardian for the Manchester International Festival, transforms scenes from the Guardian’s newsroom archive into cuttingedge audio art. MIF Creative Launched in 2009, MIF Creative commissions leading international artists and thinkers to make new work in collaboration with local people of all ages and backgrounds. Projects like Jeremy Deller’s Procession (pictured) and Oily Cart’s Something In the Air demonstrated the possibilities and transformational effects for all involved. This year’s MIF Creative programme sees an ambitious collaboration with local communities to create the UK’s first multi-storey Vertical Farm (page 50); talented school children from North Manchester getting a taste of
life on stage in Victoria Wood’s That Day We Sang (page 16); brand new partnerships with local faith groups to present the best of devotional singing and recital (Sacred Sites, page 26); and a Greater Manchester-wide focus on brilliant new sound art for the very young (Music Boxes, page 28). From school children to faith groups via nursery teachers, environmentalists, architects and food producers, MIF Creative aims to offer opportunities to inspire, excite and support local people to get involved in their Festival. How We Work Manchester International Festival is the world’s first festival of original, new work and special events and takes place biennially in venues across the city and throughout Greater Manchester. We are an artist-led festival, presenting work from around the world and across the spectrum of arts and culture. MIF is committed to developing a sustainable festival, one which benefits the local economy, is engaging for local communities and which tries to minimize its environmental impact. We work hard to secure a mixture of income; combining public, commercial and private income with ticket sales and co-commissioning money to help ensure that we are here for the long-term. Approximately one third of the programme is free, allowing audiences to engage with the Festival whatever their means. Our creative learning programme, MIF Creative, commissions artists and projects that put local people at the heart of our work; it is made with the same ambitions and values as the rest of the Festival. Our volunteer programme brings more than 300 enthusiastic, hard-working individuals into the Festival organisation.
60
We are constantly trying to reduce our environmental impact, ensuring our offices are resource efficient and working with partner venues and suppliers to reduce the environmental impact of MIF events. We have introduced composting at the Festival CafĂŠ on Albert Square to reduce how much waste we send to landfill, and have been awarded both the British Standard in Sustainable Event Management and a Greener Festival Award for our efforts in these areas. We also support artists making work which engages with environmental issues. We are taking small but genuine steps forward; we know we have lots of room to improve. If you would like more information or to suggest how we could improve sustainability at the next Festival, we would love to hear from you. Contact us at sustainability@mif.co.uk

HOW ROCHDALE CHANGED THE WORLD. In 1844, a revolution began. It wasn’t about land, politicians or religion. And no blood was spilt. This revolution was called The Co-operative. It began in Rochdale, where a group of everyday people founded a new kind of business. A business based on democratic principles, owned by its customers and reinvesting in the community it served. 167 years on, we’ve grown to become a part of daily life, with over 5,000 stores and branches across the UK and almost 1 billion members of co-operatives worldwide. The Co-operative has already helped hundreds of thousands of people to bring their ideas to life, and now we want to empower even more revolutionaries to get involved. To keep communities thriving, support co-operatives, protect the environment and trade fairly. What do you want to change?
