Welcome to the fourth Manchester International Festival

the arts are for all of us. They fire our imaginations and offer us invaluable insights into the world in which we live. Music, film, theatre, the visual arts, comedy and dance can touch anyone and everyone. During difficult times, it’s vital that the arts continue to encourage us to ask questions, seek answers and engage with the society that surrounds us. With this in mind, MIF has commissioned leading artists from across the cultural spectrum to create more than 20 world premières and special events for this summer. Almost everything in our programme is a UK exclusive, and many of our shows will go on to travel the world after making their debuts here in Manchester. Sincere thanks go to MIF’s sponsors and partners. Without them, we would be unable to stage many of our shows, and the Festival would be much less accessible: with a number of £12 tickets to every MIF performance and a range of free events, we have tried to make this Festival of world premières as affordable as possible. I would also like to thank our incredible MIF team, the members of the local community who have taken part in our MIF Creative programme, and the hundreds of dedicated volunteers, without whom none of this would be possible. MIF only appears for 18 days every two years. We hope you can make time to join us this July.

Ever since the 1991 release of their classic debut Blue Lines, Massive Attack has been one of the best and most consistently adventurous acts in the UK. Robert Del Naja’s painting and graphic design work have represented the band’s music from their roots as a sound system, and his LED installation work with United Visual Artists has been the core of the band’s live shows since 2003. These will be Massive Attack’s first shows since 2010 and their only UK shows of 2013.

The Machine written by

Josie Rourke

in 1997, garry kasparov, the world’s greatest chess player, arrived in New York City for the biggest match of his life. His opponent wasn’t a fellow Grandmaster but a faceless super-computer: Deep Blue, built by tech giant IBM. The match was IBM’s bid to raise its profile and its stock price. An international celebrity and the undisputed master of his art, Kasparov came to America for freedom and glory. What he didn’t expect to confront was the lifelong dedication of another man, Deep Blue’s wunderkind inventor Dr Feng-Hsiung Hsu. Both geniuses, they staked their reputations on the tournament. What followed was one of the most compelling stories of its time. Directed by Josie Rourke, Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse, award-winning playwright Matt Charman’s dramatisation of modern history is a story of mind against matter, man against machine.

Abida Parveen

Appearing with her musicians

ask anyone in south asia to name the greatest spiritual singer alive today, and it won’t be long before the name of Abida Parveen enters the conversation. Parveen sends listeners into raptures in a way matched only by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, who Parveen has described as her ‘spiritual brother’. This is her first UK performance since 2001. Born in Pakistan, Parveen specialises in ghazals and kafis, two distinct forms of Sufi poetry that date back centuries. Perhaps surprisingly, she also recently served as one of the judges on Sur Kshetra (Music Battlefield), the hugely popular Indo-Pakistani TV talent contest. But whether performing for Sufi devotees at religious shrines or grading acts on prime-time, Parveen’s approach remains the same: ‘Music should rise from the heart and go straight to the soul.’ Parveen rarely visits the West, in part because audiences in Pakistan and India are so hungry to see and hear her perform. This concert offers a rare opportunity to see one of the greats of modern devotional music, in her only UK performance.

Robert Wilson, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Willem Dafoe

The Old Woman

pioneering theatre director Robert Wilson (The Life and Death of Marina Abramović, MIF11) returns to Manchester with his brand new theatrical production, The Old Woman. Developed with and starring legendary dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov, and co-starring world-renowned actor Willem Dafoe, The Old Woman is an adaptation of the work of the same name by Russian author Daniil Kharms. Born in St Petersburg in 1905, Kharms suffered through Stalinist rule for much of his life. Eventually he was arrested, imprisoned and killed by Soviet soldiers in the Gulags aged just 36. The shortness of Kharms’ life parallels the brevity of his absurdist writings, some of which stretch to little more than a paragraph. One exception is The Old Woman, an obscure, brilliant and slyly political novella written in the 1930s. Carrying echoes of Beckett and Ionesco in its deadpan narrative, which follows the story of a struggling writer who cannot find peace with himself, The Old Woman is perhaps the finest work by one of the great avant-garde Russian authors. An old lady is standing in the courtyard and holding a wall clock in her hands. I walk past the old woman, stop and ask her, ‘What time is it?’

do it 20 13

A group art show

following the acclaim of Il Tempo del Postino (MIF07) and 11 Rooms (MIF11), MIF presents do it 20 13, another groundbreaking exhibition that turns the notion of viewing into an active and performative encounter between artist and visitor. do it 20 13 consists of a growing series of written artists’ instructions, each of which is interpreted anew every time it is enacted. These instructions range from the active and the absurd to the profound and the philosophical, some to be accomplished at the gallery and others to be taken away and carried out at home. Conceived and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist in conversation with Christian Boltanski and Bertrand Lavier, do it began life in 1993. This 20th-anniversary show premières a significant number of new instructions and brings together artists from the first do it experiments with subsequent generations of artists who have been commissioned to reinterpret earlier directions.

dates Fri 5 July 2pm – 6pm Sat 6 –Sun 21 July 10am–6pm Open to 9pm every Thursday venue Manchester Art Gallery Mosley Street Manchester M2 3JL manchestergalleries.org admission

do it 20 13 will be divided into four rooms. The Active Room, presented by the artist Richard Wentworth, will contain a series of instructions aimed at the public from artists including Etel Adnan, Ai Weiwei, Yto Barrada, Theaster Gates, Helen Marten, Casey Reas, Peter Saville and Ryan Trecartin. The Homage Room will feature living artists’ interpretations of instructions originally created by artists who are no longer with us: for example Sarah Lucas reacting to Franz West, Tracey Emin responding to the instruction of Louise Bourgeois and Christodoulos Panayiotou’s homage to Joan Brossa. The Archive Room will contain ephemera and documentation from participants in the last 20 years of the project including Leon Golub, Shere Hite, Mike Kelley and Cedric Price. And finally, the Film Room will screen a large number of do it video works, including pieces from Gilbert & George, Yoko Ono and Nancy Spero.

Martha Argerich

Manchester Camerata Gábor Takács-Nagy

‘One can only marvel at the depth of expression, spontaneity, sense of discovery and playfulness she brings.’ gramophone in a career spanning more than 50 years, world-renowned Argentinean pianist Martha Argerich has won legions of admirers for her uniquely expressive and spirited performances and her fresh, imaginative recordings. Argerich only rarely visits the UK, which is why MIF is thrilled to welcome her to the city in collaboration with Manchester Camerata for this unmissable concert. Over the years, Argerich has established a number of close working relationships with musicians around the world. One such kinship is with Gábor Takács-Nagy, Music Director of Manchester Camerata, with whom Argerich has performed regularly to brilliant effect. This artistic affinity has inspired tonight’s concert, which features three vital contemporary works that showcase the keyboard in very different ways. Argerich will join Takács-Nagy and Manchester Camerata in Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.1, a longtime audience favourite celebrating its 80th birthday this year. Either side of this vibrant work, Manchester Camerata will perform Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste, a brooding masterpiece from 1937; and Arvo Pärt’s rich, powerful Lamentate, for which the orchestra will be joined by pianist David Kadouch, a rising star from the new generation. Peter Sellars

Michelangelo Sonnets Eric Owens, Cameron Carpenter

mif is delighted to welcome American visionary Peter Sellars for his Festival directorial debut with a new staged piece in a long-lost Manchester venue: the Albert Hall, a gorgeous Wesleyan chapel that will be opening to the public for the first time in more than 40 years. Shostakovich’s haunting Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti is based on Michelangelo’s sonnets and accompanying drawings of bodies in the throes of overwhelming spiritual struggle. Says Sellars: ‘The drawings and the sonnets, in their relentless quest for forgiveness and release, achieve a kind of hard-won, exhausted but resplendent transcendence.’ The Suite will be answered by one of JS Bach’s most dramatic Cantatas, Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen (BWV 56). Sellars will be working with two American originals. Bass-baritone Eric Owens, one of the newest stars of New York’s Metropolitan Opera, has created a unique place in contemporary music, giving towering performances of physical and metaphysical stature, profound musicality and sheer humanity. Organist Cameron Carpenter has quickly garnered a worldwide reputation for his daring imagination, bold programming, fearless technical brilliance and ferocious, exhilarating recitals that rethink the instrument, the repertoire, the audience and the art form. director

Maxine Peake

The Masque of Anarchy directed by

Sarah Frankcom

on 16 august 1819, riven by poverty and disaffected at the lack of assistance offered by the state, 60,000 Mancunians gathered at St Peter’s Field to campaign for parliamentary reform. People came in peaceful protest: men, women and children, carrying picnics and wearing their Sunday best — but that didn’t deter local magistrates from sending an armed cavalry to disperse the crowds and arrest the speakers, killing 15 protestors and injuring hundreds more. A touchstone event in British history, the Peterloo Massacre and the outrage it spurred ultimately helped to bring about the formation of the trade union movement and the reform of parliamentary democracy. On hearing of the massacre, poet Percy Bysshe Shelley penned The Masque of Anarchy, an indelibly powerful 91-verse epic widely regarded as the greatest political poem in British history. For MIF, actress Maxine Peake (Shameless, Silk) and director Sarah Frankcom (Artistic Director, Royal Exchange Theatre) will deliver a haunting, provocative new interpretation of this landmark work, as relevant to post-riot, mid-recession Britain as it was when it was first written. The Masque of Anarchy will be staged in the atmospheric Albert Hall, mere steps from the site of the massacre itself.

FREE the closing lines of shelley’s rallying cry to the protestors of St Peter’s Field seem as relevant today as they were in 1819. But almost two centuries on, the ‘few’ belong to a new global financial elite, and the ‘many’ are struggling to define the nature of their dissent. Can protest have an impact on the world’s financial powers? Are we simply victims of the financial crisis? Or, given the benefits that the global economy has delivered for so many of us, are we too complicit in the system to equate ourselves with the valiant protestors of Peterloo? Five years on from the crash, what demands should today’s ‘many’ be making? Do we have the power to bring about change?

The Rite of Spring Romeo Castellucci, Teodor Currentzis, MusicAeterna

‘What did you love most in Russia?’ ‘The violent Russian spring that seemed to begin in an hour and was like the whole Earth cracking.’ igor stravinsky commissioned by russian impresario Diaghilev, with revolutionary choreography by Nijinsky, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring premièred in Paris in 1913. The performance sparked a riot in the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, ushered in a new kind of popular art and music, and ultimately became one of the defining moments of 20th-century culture. One hundred years after its cataclysmic debut, this radical work will receive a dramatic reworking for MIF13. Teodor Currentzis, Artistic Director of Perm Opera, and his virtuoso orchestra MusicAeterna, who hail from Diaghilev’s home town, have teamed up with the renowned theatre director Romeo Castellucci to create a vital new Rite that will be presented in Manchester and Perm to celebrate the work’s centenary. Castellucci’s staging remakes what is conventionally a dance piece into an extraordinary theatre and art installation, creating choreography from falling bone powder. In a show without actors or dancers, the 100-piece orchestra will become part of the staging, which will take place in the dramatic, soaring industrial spaces of Manchester’s Mayfield Depot. The Rite of Spring will open with a sound prelude created by Scott Gibbons, comprised entirely from sounds at a molecular scale. ‘The bone powder is the main character on the stage. It looks as if the dancers dissolved in the air, turning into a cloud of dust, powder… the dance of dust particles the endless dance of the Universe.’ romeo castellucci

this radical and immersive work plunges visitors into a pulsating sensory landscape, by turns enigmatic and recognisable. Taking advantage of the visitor’s own dilating pupils, This variation constantly shifts perception, processing and transforming before eye and ear. Tino Sehgal is one of contemporary art’s true pioneers, expanding the exhibition format into sensual and personal realms. His work featured in MIF11’s 11 Rooms and MIF07’s Il Tempo del Postino.

Mette Ingvartsen Evaporated Landscapes

evaporated landscapes is an artificial world in which landscapes are constructed from light, sound, bubbles and foam. In Mette Ingvartsen’s work, choreography is removed from its normal context and becomes the relationship between these ephemeral elements as they magically float and dissolve into space.

Mårten Spångberg Epic

a bold choreographic mise-en-scène for nine dancers, Epic explores the nature and artifice of format, materiality and attention. On this abstract landscape are superimposed alien existences and objects that in turn reveal transient phenomena. Eszter Salamon Dance for Nothing

john cage’s influential, experimental Lecture on Nothing forms the rhythmic template for Eszter Salamon’s choreography in Dance for Nothing. Salamon’s movements are juxtaposed against Cage’s words, but as a parallel action: according to Salamon, ‘The dance should be autonomous and never become an illustration or a commentary on the text.’ Eszter Salamon is a Berlin-based choreographer, dancer and performer whose work has been presented widely in Europe and Asia.

Neneh Cherry and

RocketNumberNine

one of music’s great maverick talents, singer-songwriter Neneh Cherry has spent her career out on a musical limb. From her beginnings with post-punk troublemakers Rip Rig & Panic via transatlantic chart success in the late 1980s and on to her recent work with free jazz noisemakers The Thing on last year’s explosive album The Cherry Thing, she’s surprised and thrilled audiences at every turn. Cherry’s latest project is a potentially electrifying collaboration with Londonbased brothers Ben Page (keyboards/electronics) and Tom Page (drums/ percussion), better known as RocketNumberNine. Tonight, for the first time, the trio will play their new album in its entirety. The evening will marry Cherry’s distinctive vocals and irrepressible stage presence to the duo’s shapeshifting grooves and atmospherics. As always with Cherry, expect the unexpected and you won’t be disappointed.

John Tavener An evening of new and rarely performed work with the BBC Philharmonic and special guest Abida Parveen

inspired by the great religious traditions, John Tavener’s music is celebrated for its enduring beauty and deeply spiritual outlook. His music has made a profound emotional connection with audiences around the world and has brought him commercial and critical acclaim at levels that are rarely enjoyed by living composers. The evening will include three world premières. The Love Duet from The Play of Krishna, performed by John Mark Ainsley and Elin Manahan Thomas, has been described by the composer as ‘the most ecstatic music that I have ever written’. The Death of Ivan Ilyich is Tavener’s recent exploration into the work of Tolstoy, performed by cellist Steven Isserlis with bass-baritone Jonathan Lemalu. Through MIF Creative, Tavener will also be working directly with the faiths that have influenced him; If Ye Love Me is a new piece for the MIF Sacred Sounds Women’s Choir, formed from faith communities across Greater Manchester working together to explore the beauty and power of voices raised in praise. The choir will also perform Tavener’s Mahamatar, set to Werner Herzog’s film Pilgrimage, alongside special guest Abida Parveen. BBC Philharmonic Orchestra MIF Sacred Sounds Women’s Choir conductor

Mogwai

Performing live to Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait A film directed by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno Produced by Sigurjon Sighvatsson, Anna Lena Vaney and Victorien Vaney

one of the most beguiling portrayals of an individual in recent cinematic history, Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait is a football film like no other. Using 17 cameras, the film tracks the legendary French midfielder Zinédine Zidane throughout a 2005 Spanish league match at Madrid’s imposing Bernabéu Stadium — on and off the ball, in the thick of the action and on its periphery. The result, from directors Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno, is a dramatic, hypnotic and deeply beautiful depiction of one of the world’s finest footballers performing on one of the sport’s grandest stages. The film’s soundtrack was composed by Mogwai — and for the first time, exclusively for MIF13 in this football-frenzied city, the band will be performing it live alongside the movie. The Glasgow quintet have built a deserved reputation for the fearsome intensity of their live performances, and these shows at the atmospheric Albert Hall offer a unique chance to see them in action.

River of Fundament

A discussion with Matthew Barney and Jonathan Bepler

since 2007, american artist Matthew Barney and composer Jonathan Bepler have been developing a diverse series of multi-disciplinary, site-specific projects loosely based on Norman Mailer’s 1983 novel Ancient Evenings. The first of them was The Guardian of the Veil, a startling performance that premièred in Manchester as part of live group show Il Tempo del Postino (MIF07). For River of Fundament, Barney and Bepler are collaborating to produce a sevenpart film project that will continue to draw upon the thematic undercurrents of Mailer’s novel. Set in pre-Christian Egypt, Ancient Evenings elaborately chronicles the seven stages of the soul’s departure from the deceased body as it passes from death to rebirth in accordance with Egyptian mythology. River of Fundament will combine the traditions of narrative cinema with elements of live performance, sculpture and opera. This event will give Manchester audiences an exclusive preview of excerpts of River of Fundament, along with a chance to hear Barney and Bepler discuss both the project and their collaborative process. MIF is working with the artists to present River of Fundament at opera houses and theatres internationally from 2014 onwards.

The Biospheric Project Urban farm, laboratory, research centre

with rising food prices, climate change and growing urban populations, how can we continue to put food on our tables? This summer, MIF and The Biospheric Foundation will be investigating some possible answers. For The Biospheric Project, we’re transforming a derelict mill on the banks of the River Irwell into a thriving agricultural space. Part farm, part laboratory and part research centre, this disused industrial site will be filled with innovative sustainable food systems, from agroforestry to aquaponics. A programme of related events, including special activities for schools and families, will bring the research to life, exploring how these experiments into food, technology and design can help forge a new way of urban living. The Biospheric Project has grown out of work conducted for MIF11’s Vertical Farm and The Biospheric Foundation’s own research, supported by partners including Manchester Metropolitan University and Queen’s University, Belfast. The project will help to put Greater Manchester at the forefront of this vital area of international research and activity, and will continue to flourish beyond 2013.

Inne Goris

Once Upon a Story For children, young people and families

mif13’s events for young people and families come courtesy of charismatic Belgian theatre director Inne Goris, whose work crosses the boundaries of theatre, dance, performance and visual art. The programme’s arresting music is by Dominique Pauwels. For Once Upon a Story, Inne will create within Manchester Town Hall a treasure trove of stories of and about childhood, where anything is possible and audiences find themselves at the heart of the action. There are four shows under Inne’s umbrella, each aimed at different age groups: ZigZag ZigZag (ages 9+, world première) — A beautiful story about adventurous friendship, unfortunate circumstances and the pain of letting go. Inspired by David Grossman’s much-loved story The ZigZag Kid, ZigZag ZigZag will première in schools around the city during MIF, along with special performances for families at weekends. Once Upon a Time (ages 4+, UK première) — A sparkling, wordless performance using material from classic fairytales, taking the whole family on an adventure into the dark heart of the story… and out again! Daydream (ages 3+) — Another chance to experience this beautiful musical installation commissioned for MIF11’s Music Boxes. Daydream drives the imagination for you to create your own story, dream or fantasy. Long Grass (ages 15+, UK première) — A challenging and thought-provoking full-length performance for younger and older adults, inspired by the dreams and memories of child soldiers. These performances will be accompanied by workshops and talks for schools. director

Jamal Edwards and SB.TV presents Smokey Barbers, History of Grime: Rebels with a Cause and Jokes from the Hood

from modest beginnings, Jamal Edwards’ pioneering multimedia company SB.TV has quickly grown into one of the biggest success stories in British youth culture. In just a few years, it’s garnered more than 150 million YouTube views — and it’s getting bigger by the day. Now, for MIF13, Edwards is taking three shows to the stage, showcasing the best urban talents in the UK exclusively at MIF. Smokey Barbers has already been a big hit on YouTube. Now the show moves from screen to stage, as Jazzie Zonzolo (TJ in Anuvahood), David Vujanic (aka Bricka Bricka), Humza Arshad (Diary of a Badman), and Afolabi Dasaolu (aka A Dot) welcome familiar faces to the salon for gossip, live music and frank discussion… History of Grime: Rebels with a Cause undresses one of the most exciting musical cultures in Britain. Through his personal story, hard-hitting grime artist Justin Clarke (aka Ghetts) will take the audience inside the music that’s taken the country by storm. Hosted by Kojo from Choice FM, Jokes from the Hood will bring the best in British urban comedy to Albert Square. Five up-and-coming comics will deliver a fast, edgy and hilarious show that’s guaranteed to raise the roof. Nikhil Chopra Coal on Cotton

the indian artist Nikhil Chopra has been widely acclaimed for his performances that use a repertoire of characters to unravel the complexities of colonial India and Britain, along with his own family history. For Coal on Cotton, Chopra is turning his focus to two materials that made Manchester supremely wealthy in the 19th century, and that continue to hold workers in modern slavery beyond Europe and North America. Held over 65 continuous hours in the shell of the yet-to-be-completed Landscape Gallery at the Whitworth Art Gallery, which will open 24 hours a day for the show’s duration, Coal on Cotton will span centuries and continents. The performance will ask its audience to witness and reflect on connections between the lives of our forebears and ourselves, and on the actions that drive power and possession. In a gallery space engulfed by cotton, Chopra’s work will make connections between Mumbai and Manchester, cities sewn together through Britain’s imperial might. Nikhil Chopra was born in 1974 in Calcutta, studied art at Ohio State University and now lives in Goa. His work Yog Raj Chitrakar: Memory Drawing VIII was part of Marina Abramović Presents… at MIF09.

Delphic

Our Worldly Collections

for their debut album Acolyte, high-flying Manchester trio Delphic married the sounds of the present with key influences from the past and were rewarded with ecstatic reviews and top-10 sales. But rather than deliver more of the same, the band transformed themselves for this year’s follow-up Collections, pushing their sound far beyond its origins to terrific effect. Now, exclusively for MIF, Delphic will be taking Collections around the world and back without ever leaving Festival Square. At this ambitious event, the trio will be completely reworking Collections with the help of musicians from across the globe, radically rearranging the entire album with everything from bhangra beats to hip hop rhythms, Japanese soul to the distinctive chimes of the Javanese gamelan. Taking place in the intimate Pavilion Theatre, these globetrotting gigs should be one of the hottest tickets of the year.

MONEY

Perform their debut album in recent years, few new bands have staked their claim to bigger and better things in such an arresting a fashion as M O N E Y. Selling out shows before they’d even released a single, the Manchester quartet has drawn devoted fans to strange, beautiful and passionate gigs around the city over the last year or so, culminating with a now-legendary series of all-night parties at an abandoned factory in the shadows of Strangeways. A Mancunian secret until now, M O N E Y look set to break far beyond the city’s borders in 2013, but MIF is thrilled to be presenting them on home territory this summer. The group has recently signed to influential label Bella Union and will soon be releasing their much-anticipated debut album, which you can hear in full at this exclusive gig. Rob da Bank

A musical history in sound and pictures if anyone can define a decade in 26 songs, it’s Rob da Bank, whose mischievous eclecticism has made him one of Britain’s best-loved DJs. So that’s what MIF has asked him to do… Over four nights, Rob will be bringing us the A–Z of Manchester — starting with the 80s, through different decades, covering the whole alphabet. Featuring visuals mixed live from the curated collection of legendary local photographer Kevin Cummins, this intimate party would go down a treat everywhere from Alphabet Street to Xanadu — but you’ll only find it at MIF. Since finding fame with his Sunday Best club, Rob da Bank has spun his leftfield musical appetites into a huge array of enterprises. Alongside his weekly BBC Radio 1 show, Rob runs the annual Bestival fest, and has released acts as diverse as the Dub Pistols and David Lynch on his Sunday Best label. Born in Manchester, Kevin Cummins has been photographing musicians since the 70s. Arguably Britain’s leading rock photographer, he’s also worked at venues as diverse as the Royal National Theatre and Maine Road.

‘I’ve had the time of my life and I’ll gladly do it again.’ MIF VOLUNTEERS AT THEIR THANK YOU PARTY

Manchester International Festival Volunteers Sponsored by PZ Cussons

MIF is grateful to our dedicated and talented volunteers. They provide invaluable support in a variety of roles such as front of house, office administration, technical assistance and welcoming audiences to our Festival city. The contribution of our volunteers helps to make the Festival a success. For more information on the Volunteer Programme, please visit mif.co.uk/work-with-us/volunteering

At PZ Cussons, we are excited about sponsoring Manchester International Festival’s Volunteer Programme for the third time. We have seen how it has benefited many people of all ages and walks of life and we know that the Festival would not be the success it is without the extraordinary individuals that volunteer their time with energy and enthusiasm to a range of roles and activities. We pride ourselves on injecting a little magic into everyday life through innovative and imaginative products. We believe that Manchester International Festival represents the same spirit – bringing a touch of the extraordinary to our city through unique and innovative works of art. We are therefore proud of our partnership with MIF and look forward to sharing in the fun and delights that we hope you enjoy.

AA Rosette Awards

It’s great to have world-class, innovative neighbours and that’s why BBC North is supporting Manchester International Festival. From our home on Salford Quays, we are proud to be part of the rich mix of exciting projects and initiatives that will bring this city to life. Supporting creativity The BBC is committed to helping creative industries across the North of England flourish and prosper. Working in partnership with companies and talent from the region we want to make audiences’ experience of the BBC really memorable. Gripping dramas are being made right across the North including In The Flesh, Last Tango in Halifax, The Syndicate and The Village, and we are uncovering yet more comedy talent in the region with new series like Hebburn and Citizen Khan. BBC Children’s continue to delight children and parents alike with programmes from Old Jack’s Boat to dramas such as the successful Wolfblood. Radio has also found a new home at MediaCityUK. As well as the awardwinning BBC Radio 5 Live with its mix of breaking news and sports coverage, stars from BBC R6 Music including Mark Radcliffe, Stuart Maconie, Marc Riley, Craig Charles and Mary Anne Hobbs play wonderful music from state-of-theart studios on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal. Whether it’s music, drama, performance or art, Manchester International Festival inspires us all to greater creative heights. We wish everyone involved a successful, highly acclaimed 2013 season. www.bbc.co.uk/bbcnorth @BBCNorth
