FIRST WORDS
First words As UK cities go, few have experienced as much admiration as Manchester in recent years. Indeed, throughout this guide you will be privy to some of our best (and least) known science stories, exciting scientific developments and information about the key sectors that Greater Manchester is currently focused on and why you should seriously consider Manchester if your organisation operates in one of them. Of course, you will also find full details of our key venues, all the information you could possibly need to organise your event here, testimonials from previous clients and details of the free services that Visit Manchester offers event planners – from finding the perfect venue and securing accommodation for delegates, to help with suggestions and contacts within our wide network of partners. MANCHESTER: THE COMPLETE CONFERENCE DESTINATION
MUSIC Manchester has music in its soul. Various Mancunian exports includingThe Smiths, Oasis, andTakeThat to name only a few, have contributed some of the most important rock and pop music of all time to the global jukebox. Combine that with two classical music educational institutions and a dedicated concert hall home to a world class orchestra, Manchester remains one of the best cities to hear live music. The Bridgewater Hall is Manchester’s international concert venue. Built to give the best possible space for music, the hall hosts over 250 performances a year including classical music, rock, pop, jazz, world music and much more. Manchester Arena, Manchester’s biggest live entertainment venue and the second busiest arena in the world, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Over the last 20 years the arena has staged some of the biggest names in live entertainment.
NIGHTLIFE A visit to Manchester would not be complete without exploring the city by night. Each destination boasts its own unique style and collection of bars, pubs and nightclubs. Whether it’s a quiet evening sipping on cocktails or a full blown night dancing on the tiles there is something for every style. Cloud 23 is a great place to start an evening, enjoying some finely made drinks high above the city. Although it operates a guest list after 6pm, Cloud 23 is never pretentious. For something a little louder, try Gorilla, a bar that doubles up as a kitchen, live venue and club space located under the railway arches of Whitworth Street West. Its mezzanine gin parlour is a particularly nice touch. And of course no late night Mancunian excursion is complete without a visit to the Northern Quarter. Amongst the plentiful bars here are Cottonopolis, Cane & Grain,Terrace and Bakerie, a bar that bakes its own bread.

MANCHESTER: EUROPEAN CITY OF SCIENCE
Manchester: European City of Science By David Atkinson
A performing robot orchestra, a journey of discovery into the miracle material of the 21st Century and an artistic take on artificial intelligence — these are just some of the wonders of science coming to Manchester this year. The reason? Manchester has been named the European City of Science (ECOS) for 2016 as part of its role in hosting the huge EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) for one week in July. It’s the first time the title has been bestowed on a UK city and the nomination of Manchester is particularly timely: this year marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of John Dalton, the pioneer of modern atomic theory. Dalton started the tradition of science education in the city that still thrives today.

Indeed, Manchester still leads the world in many aspects of scientific research, notably smart textiles, digital health and quantum dots which are currently key areas of research in the city. The next generation of Manchester scientists will have an opportunity to share their experience on 6 July 2016, which has been named as Manchester’s Big School Science Share day as part of the ECOS programme. Manchester has had a long-standing relationship with scientific innovation throughout history. The city where science first met industry has been home at various points in time to atom-splitting Rutherford, AI-researchingTuring and, more recently the graphene pioneers Geim and Novoselov, winners of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics.
MANCHESTER: EUROPEAN CITY OF SCIENCE
The ESOF symposium, a gathering of the world’s leading scientific brainboxes with over 4,500 big thinkers representing 90 nationalities, recognises this. The conference opens with an event at The Bridgewater Hall on 23 July 2016 and will be accompanied by a citywide festival, which takes science to the streets of Manchester through workshops, performances and experiences. These events will explore the ways in which science continues to transform our lives.
Some 25 (and counting) Nobel Prize winners have previously researched their breakthroughs in Manchester while scientists from the University of Manchester are amongst those now working at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN near Geneva. Even the popularTV scientist Professor Brian Cox lectures at the University of Manchester.
The full programme of ECOS events will draw to a close in October with the tenth Manchester Science Festival, the city’s premier annual event for public engagement with science, plus a performance by the aforementioned robot orchestra. This will feature humans and robots performing together with real instruments and guided by a conductor - think Joy Division meets Kraftwerk meets the Last Night of the Proms. TRANSPORT PROVIDERS
Union Cars
For over 30 years, Union Cars has been providing private hire services to Manchester and the surrounding areas. They have worked hard over these years to become one of the major providers of private hire cars and minibuses by placing particular emphasis on offer timing and safety at the right price. Their reputation in Manchester is the result of the quality of service provided which includes a team of friendly, helpful and committed drivers. As a matter of policy they constantly look for improvements in their reservation system, allocation of drivers and monitoring of vehicles. They have invested heavily in new technology and as a result are able to offer bookings via telephone, the web and phone apps.
They use the latest GPS tracking technology, which is now available to customers via their app, allowing customers to monitor movements of their allocated driver. A large fleet of cars and minibuses are available to book from three offices covering most of Manchester and beyond. Special rates to airports are available and a strict policy ensures there are no surcharges for peak periods. Customers are able to book vehicles in advance and are kept informed via emails and texts. Union Cars are also official providers of transport to some major businesses and institutions in Manchester, able to offer tailor made services for business and corporate clients.
