News & Developments Flights Manchester Airport continues to attract additional European routes making the city even more accessible for leisure and business visitors. Germanwings launched four flights a week from Cologne/Bonn for their winter schedule and easyJet increased the number of destinations to include flights from Copenhagen, Munich and Marrakech. In September, Icelandair increased the frequency of their Reykjavik flights to four times a week and Jet2.com is now operating a year round service on their Rome route.
Purple Flag Manchester has been successful in attaining Purple Flag Status. Purple Flag is the new "gold standard" that recognises great entertainment and hospitality areas at night. Places that achieve the standard are those that offer a positive experience to night time visitors and users. Purple Flag is set to be the indicator of where to go for a good night out and will bring positive publicity for the successful towns and city centres. Manchester scored particularly highly on its provision of taxi marshals, the array of the cultural offer, the feeling of safety and the cosmopolitan feel to the city.
LA Twin City Manchester and Los Angeles have signed a ‘new friendship agreement’ which will see educational, cultural, business, digital/new media and sporting links promoted between the two great cities. Proposals for a £24 million national indoor BMX centre at Sportcity in East Manchester have been announced. Designed by Ellis Williams Architects, the 110,000 sq foot building will, with the existing Manchester Velodrome, form the National Cycling Centre, the British home of cycling. It will include a 2,000 seat capacity BMX area and offices for the headquarters of the British Cycling Federation.
Manchester Trails Manchester Urban Culture Trails has recently launched with four themed, self-guided cultural city tours that are available to download for free on www.visitmanchester.com/trails The trails offer an interesting introduction to Manchester's art, music and culture scene. Discover Manchester To help you explore, we’ve broken down the city centre into a number of distinct districts. You’ll find there are other areas in addition to those outlined below - some of the locals might even refer to places by different names - because that’s Manchester, always changing and always evolving.
Castlefield Escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and retreat to the place where it all started. Castlefield sits proudly on the location of the original Roman fort of ‘Mamucium’. See signs of the Industrial Revolution, captured in shimmering waters, bridges, viaducts, walkways and railways.
Chinatown
Petersfield
An enchanting area that is home to the UK’s largest Chinese community outside London. Look out for authentic Chinese, Thai, Japanese and Korean restaurants, as well as gift shops, banks, supermarkets and more. Standing prominent in the centre of Chinatown, the Chinese Arch displays symbols of luck and prosperity.
This is where some of Manchester’s main conferencing facilities are positioned, including Manchester Central, The Bridgewater Hall and The Midland and Radisson Edwardian hotels. International meetings, conventions and events are held in this district throughout the year.
Northern Quarter Manchester’s creative heart offers many independent fashion stores, quirky cafés and bars, record shops and galleries. This vibrant area is an individual and inspirational extension to city centre Manchester.

Spinningfields Perhaps the most striking of Manchester’s recent developments. Spinningfields provides a welcome retreat from bustling Deansgate and leads right down to the attractive waterfront of the River Irwell. The new business district has award-winning contemporary architecture, premium business services, luxury apartments and restaurants.
Piccadilly
City South
The main gateway into the city centre. Manchester Piccadilly rail station connects visitors and workers to Manchester’s core. The area offers some of Manchester’s finest hotels and its newest developments. Manchester A-Z In 1906, Roger Oldham, a local architect and lecturer, published the Manchester Alphabet – a collection of ink and watercolour sketches documenting his humorous take on life in Manchester. Here, we pay tribute to Roger’s work with our own A-Z, which includes one of his original sketches.
Afflecks A totem of independent trade, the shabby thorn in the side of the high street and ultimately a place where it’s nothing but impressive if you choose to wear odd socks... or so the website says! An absolute must for those in search of independent labels and a shopping experience like no other in the city.
Bridgewater Canal Commissioned by the third Duke of Bridgewater to transport coal from his mines in Worsley to Manchester, the Bridgewater Canal quite literally fuelled the Industrial Revolution that earned Manchester its fame and fortune. Today it forms part of the Cheshire Ring – a popular narrow boat leisure cruise route.
Co-operative Movement
East Lancashire Steam Railway
Manchester’s co-operative movement can be traced back to 1844, when a group of 28 weavers formed the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers. The store they opened over 160 years ago is preserved today as the Rochdale Pioneers Museum and explains the ideals and principles of the co-operative movement.
Opened in 1846 to link the Manchester to Bolton line with Radcliffe, the East Lancashire Steam Railway is today one of north Manchester’s most popular attractions. The preservation society that now runs the line operates services every weekend for members of the public to enjoy the half an hour or so journey from Bolton’s Bury Street Station to the country town of Rawtenstall.
Didsbury Didsbury is perhaps best known as the setting for the popular British television series Cold Feet. Pavement cafés and a higher-than-average concentration of bars and pubs have made this once rural commuter village one of the places to live and socialise in the city. It’s also one end of what is regarded as the ‘busiest bus route in Europe’, which passes two of Manchester’s biggest universities on its way into the city centre.
Free Trade Hall The Free Trade Hall has played host to everyone from the Hallé Orchestra and ABBA to Buzzcocks, Pink Floyd and the Sex Pistols. It was built in 1853 as a symbol of, unsurprisingly, free trade and despite heavy bombing during World War Two, survives today in the form of a five-star Radisson Edwardian hotel.

Guardian Today’s national Guardian newspaper began life as The Manchester Guardian back in 1821. Founded by a group of non-conformist businessmen, Roger Oldham’s simple verse perhaps best describes the publication and its ethos: “The Guardian” is a candid friend And Guide to sundry persons, It compliments the very good And scarifies the worse ‘uns.
Hyde’s Brewery Established in 1863, Hyde’s is one of the top ten regional breweries in the UK. The brewery is managed as a family business and they also own and operate more than 80 pubs in the Northwest. They brew six seasonal beers a year, with each available for a period of two months.
Industrial Revolution In 1801, Manchester’s population was 76,788. By 1851, it had quadrupled to 316,213. The cause of this phenomenal increase was the Industrial Revolution. Technology took hold and literally spun Manchester into a new era. Cotton became the most famous export, but the world’s first industrial city was also known for its chemicals, clothing, ammunitions, vehicles and even aeroplanes.
John Shaw’s Punch House (Sinclair’s Oyster Bar) John Shaw’s punch was so strong it was advised to drink only a pint if alone, or a quart if in company. “Mind your P’s and Q’s”, warned the bar staff. The pub became Sinclair’s Oyster Bar in 1845. Lady Spittlewick, a regular, allegedly consumed up to 40 oysters a day until having the misfortune of choking on a pearl. Sinclair’s still serves oysters today.
King Street King Street was the site of Manchester’s original Town Hall and later the Manchester Ship Canal Headquarters, which survives to this day. King Street. has long been an affluent area of Manchester and today boasts exclusive designer shops from Emporio Armani to Vivienne Westwood.

Lincoln, Abraham The 1919 statue, that London didn’t want, depicts Abraham Lincoln as a casual working man prior to his reign as president. The Manchester Guardian campaigned to bring Lincoln to the city, on the premise of Manchester’s strong trading relationships with the US. Today, he stands proudly in Lincoln Square, close to the Town Hall.
Misericords (of Manchester Cathedral) A misericord, derived from the Latin word for ‘pity’, is a seat provided for comfort during long religious services. The unique carvings on the underside of Manchester Cathedral’s misericords express a humorous insight into medieval life. Look out for the fox as a hunter, domestic strife and the delightful ‘Lathom legend’.
Nuclear Free City Ironically the city where the atom was first split also became the world’s first nuclear free city in 1980. Still a nuclear free zone today, citizens are reminded of this with the Peace Gardens to the rear of the Town Hall. This status has since been celebrated in ‘Working for a nuclear free city’, one of the most promising bands to emerge from Manchester in recent years.
Old Trafford Cricket Ground Old Trafford Cricket Ground is the original Old Trafford. It was established in 1857 and is now home to Lancashire County Cricket Club. The ground is also used as a music venue, hosting big names such as Razorlight, The Strokes, R.E.M, Amy Winehouse, Coldplay and Jay-Z.
Piccadilly Records Piccadilly Records is based in the funky Northern Quarter of the city. ‘Born’ in 1978, it is one of the north’s most legendary record shops, selling everything from hip-hop, Balearic beats to new psyche folk on a selection of CD’s and vinyl. Alongside these, there are branded accessories, magazines, books and of course DJ equipment for those music lovers.
Queer up North Queer up North began life as ‘It’s Queer up North’ in 1992, based on the well known phrase ‘it’s grim up north’ whose name was also used at a legendary club night at the Haçienda. The festival is a platform for showcasing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender culture, which includes dance, debate, club nights, comedy, live art, literature and theatre.

Royal Exchange
Suffragette
Turing, Alan
The Royal Exchange is a Grade II listed Victorian building, which was used as a trading centre for the agents and salesman of thousands of Lancashire businessmen involved in the cotton and textile industry. Famous as the largest venue hall in the whole of England, and for its contributions to the success of the cotton industry in Manchester, it now houses one of the city’s most popular theatres.
Manchester’s suffragette movement was established by Emmeline Pankhurst from 1889 to around 1901 with the development of the Woman’s Social and Political Union. This Manchester group kick-started the fight for the rights of women, which led to the Suffragettes achieving their aims in 1928 with women’s right to vote.
Alan Turing was born in Wilmslow, Cheshire and is often considered to be the father of modern computer science and also for his significant contribution to the concept of artificial intelligence. His work at the University of Manchester resulted in the emergence of one of the world’s first computers.

Underground Manchester
Valette, Pierre-Adolphe
Beneath the streets of Manchester lies a forgotten landscape of long abandoned tunnels and caverns. Over 200 years of building and development in the city has left a legacy of tunnels, sewers and air raid shelters but perhaps more surprisingly miles of nuclear-proof corridors built at the height of the cold war, a shooting gallery and the vast Victoria Arches once home to a plethora of small businesses.
‘The Manchester Impressionist’, French-born Valette settled in Manchester in 1904 and taught at Manchester School of Art, where the young LS Lowry was one his students. Valette’s atmospheric paintings, depicting a slice of life in early 20th century Manchester, are exhibited at Manchester Art Gallery, alongside works by his famous pupil.
Waterhouse, Alfred This renowned architect practised in Manchester for twelve years. His work is evident in the buildings housing the Palace Hotel, Owens Park Building (University of Manchester) and HMP Manchester (Strangeways), but his most striking legacy is the acclaimed Manchester Town Hall, a confection of Victorian neo-Gothic splendour, formally opened on 13 September 1877.
Xperiment (MOSI) Suitable for all ages and ideal for families: Xperiment is a fun-packed, interactive gallery at MOSI (The Museum of Science & Industry), where over 30 different activities present scientific principles in unusual and entertaining ways. There’s lots more to see and do in the rest of MOSI and admission is free.
Yellow From 1992 to 1999, DJ Dave Haslam hosted the legendary weekly club night, Yellow, at Manchester’s Boardwalk. Featuring soul, disco and classic 70s funk, Yellow was a beacon of Manchester night life in the years leading up to the turn of the millennium. Haslam is now an established writer: check out his book ‘Manchester, England’ for a history of Manchester’s cultural and pop music scene.

Manchester Voices
John Ryan John Ryan is a newly qualified Manchester green badge tour guide. He is the managing editor of BBC Radio Manchester and also a board member of Manchester Pride, the city’s annual lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) festival.
What made you want to train as a tour guide in Manchester? I was looking for something that would help me to learn more about Manchester. I’m a Mancunian by choice, rather than birth and love all that the city offers. It’s great to see visitors discover Manchester, particularly when they find out about our firsts – the first split atom, the first (modern) computer, and our world-class architecture.
There are plans to improve the links between the existing tourist attractions at The Quays and the tram will be extended into the heart of MediaCityUK. We currently run tours of the BBC at Oxford Road. What would be interesting is to do a tour now and then come to MediaCityUK in 2011 to see how much has changed. What kind of tours can visitors expect in Manchester and do you plan to specialise in a particular area?
What is the most exciting fact about Manchester that you’ve discovered since becoming a guide?
I’ll be delivering a wide range of tours but my particular interest is modern Manchester. This includes post-war architecture, media, film and Manchester’s LGBT market.
There are so many! I guess the thing I’ve thought about most was whilst researching the Manchester Ship Canal. I had never appreciated the sheer vision of digging a route to literally bring the sea into Salford, to avoid paying taxes to Liverpool!
If you had a visitor with limited time in Manchester, which attractions would you recommend for a quick look?
What is the most irreverent fact you’ve learnt? That alongside our other firsts – suffragettes, vegetarianism, gay bars – Manchester is the place that the term ‘hypnotism’ was first coined. How does guiding contrast to your role as managing editor for BBC Radio Manchester? Actually, there’s a lot of cross-over. Researching a story and presenting it in an interesting way for your audience are all radio skills. Although, on radio you have the advantage of having your notes in front of you so it is much easier to ‘remember’ facts! Will tourists be able to enjoy MediaCityUK when it arrives? MediaCityUK will give people the opportunity to experience many elements of broadcasting first hand. The new buildings are being designed to facilitate interaction with audiences, including production areas at ground level where you'll be able to see what is going on. We believe it will become a place for special events, with giant screens, cafés and restaurants.
The John Rylands Library, the new Civil Justice Building, the Northern Quarter, Canal Street, Manchester Art Gallery and the Manchester Wheel to take in the spectacular view. As a board member for Manchester Pride, what can you tell us about Manchester as an LGBT destination? It’s the reason I first discovered Manchester and that was before the rest of country had seen Queer As Folk! Nowhere in the UK has a better defined gay quarter. The scale of our LGBT community means there’s something for everyone. Pride has just been voted the UK’s favourite gay event for the third year running and raised £105,000 for charity in 2008 thanks to all those who supported the Big Weekend.

If an organiser has no prior knowledge of Manchester what can you do to help them learn more about the city?
end of the conference having got something really rewarding out of their time in Manchester – something that will leave a lasting legacy.
We have lots of ways to help an organiser get to know Manchester better. Come and meet me or one of the team at a trade event such as IMEX, EIBTM, Salon Bedouk or at one of the European sales missions we organise. Our website manchesterconferences.com - is really useful too. It is packed with information such as videos, downloadable resources, maps and information on venues. But I always think the best way to learn about a destination is to experience it for yourself; we welcome the opportunity to tailor a familiarisation visit to help you get to know the city better. I have lived in Manchester all my life and know the city well, I am always happy to share my personal knowledge when I meet clients or over the phone.
What is the largest event you are working on?
How does Visit Manchester support international event organisers to ensure that their event is a success?
Anthony Cassidy Anthony Cassidy specialises in account managing European and International association congresses. Recently he has worked alongside the organisers of the World Youth and Student Travel Conference, CEAS European Air and Space Conference and the International Chromosome Conference to deliver a varied programme of events in Manchester. Anthony can often be found at key international trade events such as IMEX and EIBTM allowing association meeting organisers to meet him face-to-face. What makes Manchester so suitable for international events?
Manchester is great for international events. There is a large number of venues, such as Manchester Central, the main congress centre, which is right in the middle of the city rather than on the outskirts. This means that delegates can easily explore the city and get the Manchester vibe! The largest venue, the MEN Arena, can hold up to 19,000 delegates and there are over 7,000 hotel bedrooms in the city centre.
The key in ensuring that we develop a really close bond with the organiser so that we can really get under the skin of the event. This allows us to not only provide services to meet the needs of an organiser but can make suggestions that add value to an event, improving the delegate experience and the return on investment and objectives to both organiser and delegate. As well as the services an organiser would expect from a leading convention city, such as venue finding, accommodation booking and social programme planning, we offer a bespoke service to each and every client to help them turn a good event into a great one. We help with event marketing, securing key speakers, civic receptions, financial support, identifying a local host or ambassador within a relevant association and liaising with other city stakeholders to deliver services such as city dressing, security and even road closures for conference parades. We can also work with transport providers to ensure that delegates have a seamless arrival in the city. International congress planners, on many occasions, have the difficult decision of choosing between a number of host cities. What does Manchester offer that sets it apart from the competition? Many cities can cite the range of venues it has, its infrastructure and financial incentives available to event planners. Manchester has all of these, but above all else we have passion! The team at Visit Manchester and the city as a whole relish the opportunity to host international events. There is nothing more rewarding than working on a bid to host an event and seeing it come to fruition. As part of our initial research we often liaise with the previous host destination to learn what worked well, and what did not, so that the Manchester bid is as strong as it possibly can be. The city has confidence in its product and will work tirelessly to ensure that organisers and delegates leave at the
Manchester was successful in its recent bid to secure the International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences which will take place in 2013. Held every five years and attracting up to 4,000 participants, the congress provides a world forum for the discussion and dissemination of research in this field of study. Close collaboration with conference ambassadors at the University of Manchester allowed the city to put forward a strong bid highlighting Manchester as a premier centre of research and learning in this subject. Hosting such an event is great for Manchester as it raises its profile internationally and makes a huge contribution to the local economy, supports the local community and Manchester’s future development. Conventions are often much more than plenary sessions, workshops and presentations. What do you do to ensure that delegates really get the most out their time in the city? Manchester offers a huge range of social options and ideas for partner programmes. The team know Manchester inside out and regularly visit the latest bars, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions so that we can pass on our firsthand knowledge onto organisers. Once we get an understanding of the key messages of the event or the interests of the delegates we will work with an event organiser to build as many of these in to the event programme as possible. With a vast range of options we can usually establish a link between the theme of an event and a gala dinner venue or social programme for example. We also ensure that delegates receive the right level of information, such as welcome packs, maps and digital resources to make exploring the city easy, in addition we have many ways in which we can make delegates feel more welcome upon arrival into Manchester; this can include things such as city dressing and a welcome civic reception hosted by the Lord Mayor. What is the best part of your job? The number of special and unusual requests our clients ask us to help out with! A recent bid to host the International Fire Sprinklers Conference involved researching the number of bedrooms in Manchester with fire sprinkler systems. The discovery that the city has a large proportion of these rooms meant that Manchester was best placed to put forward a bid to host this event.

In recent years Manchester has hosted a large number of high profile political events. What do you think are the reasons Manchester has been chosen as a host city? Manchester has a great convention complex at the heart of the city. This is made up of Manchester Central - which has a vast amount of exhibition space, auditoria and a range of breakout rooms; over 2,000 hotel bedrooms within a two minute walk and a further 5,000 in the city centre. The complex is also home to the Bridgewater Hall which has an auditorium that seats nearly 2,000. This site can be easily turned into a secure conference village that can adapt to the unique needs of such events. The wider city-region is also great for hosting fringe meetings and social events in a huge range of settings. Manchester City Council, Visit Manchester, Greater Manchester Police, venues and event suppliers enjoy a close working relationship that ensures all stakeholders involved with large events work together to ensure their successful delivery. Is Manchester suitable just for large associations?
James Caldwell James Caldwell is the conference team’s national association specialist; his role sees him working closely with some of the biggest names in the UK conference industry including The British Contact Lens Association, Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and The National Association of Pension Funds.
Not at all! The majority of events that I work on have delegate numbers below 400. The smallest association event that recently called Manchester home had just 150 delegates. Being a compact city, smaller events don’t get ‘lost’ in Manchester, yet they can capitalise on the resources and infrastructure often only associated with destinations that just host large events. What can Manchester offer associations that are on limited budgets? Manchester is a really cost effective destination. There are a great range of venues, hotels and service providers that are able to offer really competitive rates. As part of our initial discussions with event planners we establish what budgets are available and then suggest a range of solutions that may be suitable. As we are based in Manchester and only work with Manchester venues and accommodation providers we are able to negotiate best available rates on our clients’ behalf. We are a non-profit making organisation and our impartiality means that clients get the deal that is right for them. Manchester also offers a subvention programme that associations can apply to for financial assistance in promoting and hosting their events and we are always happy to advise on the application procedure.
What help can you provide organisers promoting their event in Manchester to potential delegates? Once an organiser has chosen Manchester we can help boost delegate numbers at the event in a number of ways. This can include attendance at the preceding event in either a networking, exhibitor or speaker capacity and providing a range of print and digital information for delegates prior to their arrival in the city. We can also work alongside organisers to help them develop a conference website that provides information not only on Manchester but the conference itself, travel information, event registration and accommodation booking. We also work closely with trade and local media and networking groups to ensure that the event gets as much PR coverage as possible. How can you help delegates with special requirements? Firstly, through a close working relationship with the event organiser we establish exactly what the special requirements may be and how they impact on the event, then using our detailed knowledge we work to not only find a solution but to seamlessly integrate it into the event programme. That way, something which starts out as a special request becomes an inclusive part of the event. Recently, we have helped organisers and delegates with accessibility requirements, heightened security needs, specialist diets and simultaneous translation. It’s quite often that organisers come to us and request something unusual for their social events. We recently took an event organiser on a tour of Manchester and whilst at one of the hotels we raised the concept of a Wii-Olympics social event as a way of engaging their delegates in a fun environment. As Manchester is known as a sporting city it was a great fit. Sourcing all the required equipment was very quick and, whilst the cost was low, the impact was significant. What makes you proud to work in Manchester? The energy and enthusiasm of people in the city. Manchester is and always has been a city of pioneers, a place that continually reinvents itself and does not rest on its laurels; meaning that I have always got something new to share with my clients!

Nicola Read Nicola Read’s specialism lies in her experience in supporting event organisers from the corporate sector. A member of the conference team for over three years, Nicola has worked with corporate event planners to organise in excess of 700 meetings, conferences, away-days and team building events.
What does Manchester offer the corporate meetings market?
How can you help a company achieve its corporate, social responsibility objectives?
Corporate meeting planners are spoilt for choice in Manchester. There are over 250 meeting venues to choose from; including hotels, conference centres, unique venues, restaurants, bars and serviced apartments that make a great base for busy executives. Just take a look through this guide at the diversity of Manchester’s product. What’s more, Manchester offers really competitive rates and great quality of service.
Many venues in Manchester are accredited by the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS), which demonstrates their commitment to lessening the impact of events on the environment and as an organisation Visit Manchester works closely with clients and venues alike to find ways to improve sustainability. We can also put clients in touch with specialist organisations that offer guidance on achieving BS8901.
Often an employee of a corporate company will get ‘landed’ with organising a meeting as an addition to their role, how can you help those clients that have no experience of meeting planning? The Manchester team has a combined knowledge of 98 years in the tourism industry and as such we have a vast amount of experience in planning events. We are able to provide a range of support services such as finding the right venue, negotiating rates and then processing the booking on the client’s behalf. We can source suppliers for every conceivable conference need, such as caterers, lighting and AV, room theming and transport. Should a client wish to conduct a site visit we can arrange this with ease. We will also run thorough a checklist with the client to make sure that they have not forgotten anything. As all of the team have got brilliant local knowledge and experience in the events industry we can always advise clients on any element of their event.
Do corporate clients have to pay for any of the services on offer?
How can you help companies that have to organise a meeting at very short notice? We have great local knowledge and a really close working relationship with Manchester’s venues and suppliers. This allows us to respond very quickly. We also use the latest technology to help source a client’s event solutions. We can turn an enquiry round in as little as four hours. We have even helped some organisers source a venue and then host a conference within eight business hours!
Absolutely not! All of the services we provide to corporate clients are free of charge. When you are not working, how do you like to relax in Manchester? It depends what kind of mood I am in. Manchester has loads of great museums and galleries most of which are free of charge; they are a great way to spend a few hours particularly if it is a rainy day. During the summer or on a dry day I love to go to one of the local stately homes such as Tatton Park or Lyme Hall which as well as grand houses have great expanses of parkland you can just get lost in.

What is the most exciting event that you have worked on? I can’t narrow it down to just one! One of the great things about my role is the many varied and exciting events we help to organise. No two events are the same. Over the three and a half years I have been at Visit Manchester I have secured venues and sourced service suppliers for large political events that welcomed over 11,000 delegates, a number of high profile events and many smaller but equally as important meetings, dinners, seminars, interviews and TV audition sessions amongst others.

Case Study:
Flying High in Manchester Over the past few years Manchester’s profile as a host destination for large-scale conferences has seen a meteoric rise. Both the Labour and Conservative Parties have made Manchester a regular home for their annual conferences, as have The Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development, Soccerex and the British Insurance Brokers Association. Whilst Manchester has the infrastructure, venues and support team to deliver events of such magnitude; the city is equally well-placed to host events that are smaller in nature yet are by no means any less important. David Gasson, Secretary General of the International Union of Aerospace Insurers explains why Manchester was an ideal choice as host city: “The International Union of Aerospace Insurers, founded in 1934, has chosen Manchester as the venue for its 2010 AGM. Each year the Union holds its AGM in a different country around the globe: recent host cities include Sorrento, Washington DC and Beijing, so it was important to find a UK city that would measure up to destinations such as these.
“Our Union’s essential requirements are a modern, central hotel with comprehensive facilities for our crowded business agenda, and ease of travel for our members based in all corners of the world. Clearly, Manchester’s breadth of quality venues and easy global access from Manchester Airport fulfil these criteria. “What really sold us on Manchester, however, was the sheer wealth of opportunities for our social programme, both for the delegates and their partners. The shortlist of exciting venues was so long that it took us three separate visits to Manchester before we made our final selection. We wanted to showcase the beauty of the surrounding countryside, the proud industrial heritage, the great Victorian architecture and the extensive redevelopment that Manchester has witnessed. “What clinched it for Manchester over the other UK cities in contention was the vibrancy and confidence that the city exudes. These are very noticeable as soon as you arrive and we are sure that our members will return to their countries after the AGM knowing that Manchester firmly deserves its place as an exciting international conference destination.”

Manchester Central There has been a central meeting place in Manchester since the 19th century; back then, it was a large outdoor meeting space, in the area of the city known as St Peter’s Field. People from all over the North of England would meet at St Peter’s Field to debate the issues of the day. The passage of time has not diminished the desire to hold public meetings, at which people gather together and debates and discussions take place. Now, however, the venue is an award-winning Convention Complex situated in the area known as Petersfield, just a few metres away form Manchester’s original meeting place. The environment may be more in keeping with 21st century meeting protocol - but the significance of Manchester Central is just as it was originally – the place where people meet, decisions are debated and history is written.
For over 150 years, Manchester Central has been a feature of Manchester’s cityscape. Now one of Europe’s premier convention and exhibition locations, the venue started life in the 1800’s as the historic Central Railway Station. It was the main source of transport for access into and out of Manchester city centre. The station closed in 1969 and the building was transformed into an Exhibition Centre in 1986; it was one of the first urban regeneration projects in the UK. In the year 2000, the facilities were enhanced by the opening of Conference facilities adjacent to the original

exhibition hall. The combined facilities included a conference auditorium, a range of break-out and seminar rooms, corporate facilities and over 13,500 sq m of exhibition space. Manchester Central is currently undergoing an impressive £20 million redevelopment programme to expand and enhance the existing facilities, which will enhance its appeal to national and International convention, exhibition and event organisers. Designed by award-winning Manchester architects, Stephenson Bell, the redevelopment is sympathetic to the much loved Grade-II listed frontage, but will also bring substantial operational benefits for the venue’s delegates and visitors.

Phase I of the redevelopment, which included the new Charter Foyer, was completed in November 2008. The foyer has created a new entranceway and provides ease of access within the Manchester Central site. Phase II, which is ongoing, includes a new and extended foyer area to the iconic Central Hall that will link internally and externally to the Charter Foyer. Due for completion in 2010, the final phase of the redevelopment will include additional seminar spaces and catering facilities, providing an extensive convention offering in the heart of one of Europe’s most interesting cities.

May 2009
The CIPD’s Annual Conference and Exhibition is the biggest event in the calendar for people management and development professionals.
BIBA’s annual conference is the largest insurance event in the country, and 2009’s conference and exhibition attracted 2000 delegates to Manchester.
Soccerex is the largest business-tobusiness event in Europe for the football industry, and is expected to attract up to 1,500 delegates during the two-day conference.
As Europe’s largest political conference the Labour Party Annual Conference attracts over 15,000 delegates, together with global leaders and the world’s press.
“Manchester Central’s state of the art facilities offer us the flexibility to be innovative in developing the conference and exhibition from 2009 and on into the future, for the benefit of the thousands of people management and development professionals who join us for the event each year. Manchester offers excellent transport links for our domestic and international guests, and also offers a wide range of accommodation and other facilities to cater for all those who visit the event over the three days.”
“We are looking forward to a very inspiring conference this year and it is a great pleasure to be coming back to Manchester as it is undoubtedly one of the most popular venues for our annual conference. In previous years, exhibitors and delegates have told us that Manchester Central’s great event facilities, lively atmosphere and wide range of hotels close by make it a superb venue for our event – and we are confident that 2009 will be no exception.”
"We are absolutely delighted to be coming to Manchester with the Soccerex European Forum from 2010 onwards. One of the main reasons for choosing Manchester were the quite exceptional facilities and new refurbishment of Manchester Central.”
“As ever, this year’s Labour Party conference in Manchester was a great success. Manchester Central’s modern facilities, highly professional venue staff, and excellent hotels add up to an excellent conference centre and are the perfect match to Manchester’s vibrant and friendly atmosphere."

Ones to Watch The best way to really get to know a city is, of course, to visit it in person. But one way to get ‘under the skin’ before you arrive is to check out its exports in the media world. On the following pages, local experts from the fields of music, TV, literature and new media outline their top five albums, programmes, books and blogs that will give you a glimpse into the spirit and soul of Manchester.
Blogs to Read Chi-chi Ekweozor is founder and managing director of Real Fresh TV, a social media consultancy based in Manchester. (www.realfresh.tv) Real Fresh TV helps companies as diverse as PUMA, T-Mobile and KEO films run social media marketing campaigns on the web using blogs, online video and social media sites like YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. The Manchizzle http://manchizzle.blogspot.com/ The Manchizzle is a popular Manchester blog featuring news about Manchester arts, media and culture. With links to pretty much every Manchester blog of note from its never ending sidebar, the Manchizzle is the place to find out about the city's latest literary and cultural news. Ever wondered what happened to a much loved café in the Northern Quarter that recently closed down? The Manchizzle probably knows. The Manchizzle is also behind intriguing projects like Rainy City Stories http://www.rainycitystories.com/ , a writer's map about Manchester. According to the Guardian it is "the pick of Manchester culture and hub of blogging goodness". Who am I to argue?
The Visit Manchester Blog http://visitmanchester.posterous.com Keeping track of everything that goes on in Manchester can be difficult but the Visit Manchester blog does a great job of highlighting the ‘must-see’ events around the city. Designed to complement the wider tourism information found on visitmanchester.com, this blog prides itself on offering multimedia content so expect to see lots of video and audio thrown into the mix. Scatterdrum http://gillmoorephotography.co.uk/blog/ If you're more interested in a visual perspective on Manchester, then checking out a photography blog (aka photoblog) maintained by Manchester-based photographer Gill Moore may be more your thing. Scatterdrum is billed as "ramblings from inside a photographer's head" but don't let that fool you. Amongst the articles on 'Classic British Designs on the new Royal Mail stamps' are well researched notes on eco friendly fonts, how to be a great photographic assistant and links to striking images from Moore's accomplished portfolio. Of particular note is her well-received 'Chorlton bench project' during which she photographed a number of park benches in the popular South Manchester suburb of Chorlton, putting up shortlist of seven to the public vote in mid 2008.
Manchester Daily Photo http://www.manchesterdailyphoto.com/ You can find beauty everywhere if you look for it and Paul Capewell’s Manchester Daily Photo blog is proof of that. If you want to see Manchester through

the eyes of someone who lives there, this is the blog to go to. Every morning Paul uploads an image he has taken somewhere in the city. The variety of the selection is what’s most striking here. From well-known landmarks like the Beetham Tower to fine details in the brickwork and ironwork of the city via haunting monochrome night time shots, Manchester Daily Photo certainly keeps you on your toes. While it won’t give you a ‘tourist brochure’ view of the city, this blog’s heart truly is with Manchester and a resident’s love for his surroundings shines through in every image.
Mancubist http://www.mancubist.co.uk/ One of the first ever Manchester blogs I came across, Mancubist is a Manchester blogging institution, covering artsy, music, media and cultural events in the city for over three years. I for one particularly appreciate their musical and creative slant: where else can you find out about local singer songwriter Denis Jones’s newest quarterly folk event and a 'capture Manchester' photography event offering you the chance to win a £500 award for capturing the city in a photograph? As their tag line goes: 'Life is good in Manchester'.
Books to Read Cathy Bolton is the artistic director of the Manchester Literature Festival. She previously worked as a writing development worker for Commonword and is currently completing an MA in writing at Sheffield Hallam University. Here, she outlines her top five reads that provide novel insights into Manchester’s rich cultural heritage.
Elizabeth Gaskell, Mary Barton (1848)
Andrea Ashworth, Once in a house on fire (1988)
In 2010, Manchester will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of one of its most celebrated literary citizens, Elizabeth Gaskell. Her first novel Mary Barton, combining class conflict, romance and murder mystery, was published to great acclaim from the likes of Charles Dickens. Gaskell's powerful and moving depiction of working class life in Victorian times continues to pack an emotional punch for modern readers and is a quintessential read for anyone wanting to become acquainted with Manchester’s industrial heritage.
This childhood memoir about growing up with abusive stepfathers in Manchester (and for a time, Canada) at once conveys the traumatic experience of domestic violence and entertains like the best of novels. A literary pre-cursor to the Misery Lit that has recently deluged the publishing world, Once in a house on fire is a cut far above the genre pulp, and should be read for the beauty of its language and vivid evocation of late 70’s Manchester as much as for the poignancy of its subject matter.
Jeff Noon, Vurt (1993)
Howard Jacobson, The Mighty Walzer (1999)
This cyber punk novel, set in a futuristic Manchester, follows in the footsteps of another local literary icon, Anthony Burgess, and has become a modern cult classic. Through the characters of Scribble and his gang, we experience a drug-induced vurtual version of the city. Noon drew heavily on musical influences in his writing, so you might want to play some Pixies or Ambient Dub in the background to help you enter the psychedelic world of Vurt.
One of several novels set in Jacobson’s home city, this comic, coming of age story tells the tale of Oliver Walzer and his dual obsession for ping pong and women. It’s a hugely entertaining novel and provides a wonderful insight into Manchester’s Jewish community in the 1950s. It not surprisingly scooped up several awards on publication, including the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for comic writing and the Jewish Quarterly Literary Prize for Fiction in 2000.
Mike Duff, Low Life (2000) This gritty comedy tells the tale of petty criminal Rooftop Rafferty – he's an anti-hero who will stoop as low as it takes to get his unfair share of the spoils, but one whom the reader feels ultimate empathy for. Low Life’s seedy depiction of North Manchester may not be the greatest of tourist adverts for the city, but Duff’s humane insight into the lives of characters most of us wouldn’t chose to cross in real life, make him a modern successor to Dickens.
The Manchester Literature Festival features some of the world’s most inspirational writers in prestigious and unusual venues across the city. Films & TV to Watch Susan Williams is the film liaison officer for Greater Manchester at Northwest Vision and Media. Susan has worked on many of the large and small screen productions that have been filmed in the city during the past six years. Here, she outlines her top five film and TV programmes you should watch before your visit to Manchester.
Hell is a City (1960) This hardboiled crime film based on the novel by Maurice Procter starred the big heartthrob of the day, Stanley Baker. It’s a true gem of a film showing a bygone Manchester, when Piccadilly bus station looked like New York City and the Mancunian skyline was littered with chimneys pumping out thick black smoke. It’s a true Manchester film; even the premiere took place here, in the Apollo Theatre in Ardwick (now the Carling Apollo).
24 Hour Party People (2002) This is a riot of a movie featuring the good, the bad and the ugly of the Manchester music scene from the past 30 years. Do you want to know why Manchester music is still a huge influence on today’s sound? Watch this film and you’ll have a laugh too.
Cracker (1993-1995) One of the must-see programmes of the 90s. This genre defining series has Robbie Coltrane as the eponymous anti-hero, stomping around the streets of Manchester like a bear with a sore head and highlights a Manchester on the verge of change. The city’s transformation can be seen as the series progresses. When you look at the Printworks, think of this show; when it was a just a deserted newspaper building, the early series were filmed there.

Life on Mars (2006-2007) The Street (2006 – present) These multi award winning dramas have transformed the locations they used into cultural hot spots. Stopford House in Stockport is no longer just a 70s municipal building, it’s been immortalised as the police station in Life on Mars where DCI Gene Hunt regularly vented his sexist, racist spleen on the displaced Sam Tyler. An ordinary street in Salford is now hallowed ground, as the characters in Jimmy McGovern’s The Street play out their ordinary lives in extraordinary ways.

Albums to Listen to Yvette Livesey is the chief executive of In The City (ITC) - the world’s premier new music event which takes place in Manchester each October. Over the years ITC has helped launch the careers of Oasis, Radiohead, Suede, Elastica, Coldplay, The Darkness, Doves, Foo Fighters, Elbow and the Stereophonics. Yvette took time out from planning the 2009 event to reveal her top five Manchester albums.
Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division
The Last Broadcast - Doves
In a city where we’re spoilt for truly great debut albums – The Roses and Oasis certainly both deserve a mention on those terms – it’s not too great a stretch of the imagination to say that in terms of influence and longevity there’s only one winner when it comes to the great Manc first album. It has influenced more bands than perhaps any other and continues to do so to this day, which is testament indeed to how good it really is.
Putting paid to both traditional ‘second album syndrome’ and those now ridiculous sounding allegations that they were somehow a melancholy band, Andy, Jimi and Jez’s second album thrust them into the big leagues. As Sub Sub they were local heroes – and in ‘Space Face’ had a bonafide Haçienda classic - but great singles like ‘Pounding’ and ‘There Goes The Fear’ took them to a whole new level and were just impossible to ignore.
Pills ‘N’ Thrills and Bellyaches Happy Mondays
Leaders Of The Free World – Elbow
Another Factory band, but what the hell. It’s tempting to pick their debut “Squirrel and G-Man Twenty Four Hour Party People Plastic Face Carnt Smile (White Out)’ - to give it it’s full title - but as one album that that sums up everything that was great, new and exciting about The Mondays, tracks like “Step On”, “Kinky Afro” and “Loose Fit” say it all – plus the Central Station artwork helped define a baggy generation.
It’d have been easier to pick their excellent, Mercury Music winning fourth album “The Seldom Seen Kid” given the mass outpouring of critical and commercial acclaim, but the troubles they were having with their record label at the time put a whole new context on this – an album that is easily as good as their more famous latest. All in all, a stunning example of the power of perseverance and positive thinking.
Substance - New Order Is it lazy to suggest a compilation album? Perhaps, but then again perhaps not when it’s ‘Substance’: released in 1987, it contains all of the band’s singles as 12-inch versions at that point in their career, plus all the B-sides. Take your pick from “True Faith”, “Bizarre Love Triangle”, “Ceremony” and more, but let’s face it you can’t come to Manchester and not listen to ‘Blue Monday’ at least once. Expensive though it turned out to be!

With over 30 international cuisines on offer, and something for every budget, Manchester’s diverse range of dining districts has the answer to every possible culinary mood. Whether you’re looking for some quirky places for a quick bite with friends, a more glamorous setting for a special occasion or buzzing squares for a pitstop, here’s an overview of the city’s foodie neighbourhoods;
Spinningfields / Castlefield
Chinatown
The newest quarter on the block, Spinningfields has quickly established itself as a hub of food, drink and social life. It’s home to 25 popular bars and restaurants including Gourmet Burger Kitchen (Irwell Square, M3 3HF), Carluccios (Hardman Square M3 3EB) and Shimla Pinks (Crown Street, M3 3HA), to name but a few. A lively outdoor events programme entertains visitors with live music, festivals and Screenfields; the city’s first open-air cinema. In contrast, Castlefield is an historical area with cobbled streets and canal side dining. Dukes 92 (Castle Street, M3 4LZ) offers informal ambience with views over the canal. The multi award-winning Choice Bar and Restaurant (Castle Quay, M15 4NT) is just across the basin, serving a delicious, modern British à la carte menu, while Albert’s Shed (Castle Street, M3 4LZ) brings a Mediterranean flair to the city by serving delicious Italian cuisine.
Take in the lights, sounds and tantalising smells of Chinatown. The Yang Sing (Princess Street, M1 4JY) is considered one of Europe’s finest Cantonese restaurants, using only the freshest ingredients to create authentic dim sum and à la carte dishes. The popular and award-winning Pacific (George Street, M1 4HF) offers both Chinese and Thai food and has one of the best wine lists in town. For less formal food, stop by Ho’s Bakery (Faulkner Street, M1 4FH) where you can pick up delicious soups and sweet and savoury Chinese pastries for around £1.

Piccadilly Vibrant and cosmopolitan Piccadilly is conveniently situated for Piccadilly railway station, bus station and city centre shopping. Shopping Spree When it comes to shopping, Manchester is hard to beat. Whatever style your heart is set on, you’ll find it here. The good thing is that most of the shops and quarters are within walking distance from each other, so it comes as no surprise that high-end shopping is just around the corner from vintage chic.
To help you find your way around Manchester’s retail heaven here are our top tips on where to go...
High Street Heaven on Market Street In the heart of the city centre and car-free, Market Street couldn’t be a better place for high street shopping. Besides the likes of American Apparel and Urban Outfitters there is also the Manchester Arndale, a double layer of renovated loveliness stuffed to the rafters with big names including Topshop, Levis, Apple, Adidas and a huge Next. Situated in Exchange Square and next to the Wheel of Manchester is the Triangle Shopping Centre - the original Corn Exchange building which has been wonderfully resurrected and now houses a wide range of shops, cafés and restaurants.
Vintage and Vinyl in the Northern Quarter The Northern Quarter is packed with small and unusual shops and outlets, home to all sorts of oddities and quirky finds. Take Den, for example. It’s part gallery, part shop, showcasing not only its trademark bespoke furnishing but also selling a mish-mash of vintage homeware and decorations. Down the road you will find one of Manchester’s iconic shopping outlets. Opened in 1982 and still occupying the brightly decorated corner of Church Street and Tib Street, the legendary Afflecks continues what it does best - providing affordable outlets for independent designers and traders. Rags to Bitches - a vintage clothing boutique offers gorgeous and unique vintage and handtailored clothes and accessories, while the Craft & Design Centre, housed in the beautifully restored former Victorian Fish and Poultry Market, is home to an array of artist-run studios offering the best in local design, jewellery, bags and accessories.
There are also a handful of shop-cum-café places that are worth checking out, namely Café Pop, a vintage shop with a small downstairs café, and Oaklahoma, a bazaar of all things weird and wonderful including gifts and homeware and a quirky little eatery. For those who are on the hunt for rare vinyls and independent music, try the different record shops along Oldham Street such as Piccadilly Records and Vinyl Exchange.
Exclusive Shopping on King Street Exclusive King Street has been a place for prestigious retail therapy since the 19th Century and is now home to designer shops including Emporio Armani, Boss and Jaeger Ladieswear. Vivienne Westwood’s flagship store can be found at the top of King Street but it’s also worth visiting her Anglomania Store on Bridge Street, the first of its kind to open in the UK. Just a short walk from here and you’ll find upmarket shopping at Harvey Nichols and Selfridges on Exchange Square.
Out of Town Shopping Further out of town but easily accessible by public transport and car (with the benefits of free car parking), The Trafford Centre is the place to go for your fashion fix. It is home to a whopping 230 stores and 60 restaurants, bars and cafés. Check out Barton Square with its flagship homeware outlets including Dwell, Habitat, M&S Home and British Home Stores. Over at Salford Quays, the fashion conscious should head to the Lowry Outlet Mall, Manchester’s only factory outlet shopping. Open seven days a week with prices up to 50% below the high street all year round, the Lowry Outlet Mall offers more than 260 brands at over 80 stores. These includ a Nike Factory Store, Flannels, Whistles as well as a choice of cafés and restaurants, entertainment, free shopper parking and a stunning Quayside location.

24 Hour Party People Manchester’s creativity and diversity is reflected in its music scene and nightlife. Household names to emerge from its melting pot of influences include The Hollies, Bee Gees, New Order, The Smiths, Happy Mondays, Oasis and Take That. Manchester was the place where some of the most iconic gigs took place, it’s where Madonna made her first UK appearance, Bob Dylan was branded ‘Judas’ for going electric, and punk band, the Sex Pistols gigs inspired some of the audience to start a revolution of their own - cue Joy Division, The Smiths, Factory Records and Simply Red. Thanks to Mr Manchester himself, Tony Wilson, founder of the legendary Factory Records and Haçienda, the birth of the Madchester movement and the endless list of popular Mancunian artists the city will always be remembered for its key role in the evolution of music and nightlife. Nightlife was all about music, and still is, with countless live music venues hosting local singer songwriters or the latest international acts. Night & Day, Roadhouse and numerous bars in the city host up and coming artists, whilst the Carling Apollo and Academy present the more established. The city’s music scene is thriving today, with Mancunian veterans Elbow being awarded the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 2008 and the emergence of bands such as the Ting Tings, Courteeners and The Whip. There’s also a host of independent record labels supporting new artists.
One of the most talked about highlights is the Warehouse Project, a series of club nights that has taken the city by storm. Taking place between October and January in unique venues such as an old air raid shelter, it presents a range of artists, DJs and genres. Beginning at Boddingtons Brewery three years ago, renowned headline acts and word-of-mouth has made it one of the hottest tickets in town. Other popular nights to look out for are Blowout and High Voltage, the latter launched by the winner of the recent Best of Manchester Awards (see page 62). Here you’ll see the fashion conscious, vintage clad, skinny jeanwearing hipsters dancing to the latest records. There’s are also Manchester favourites, Sankeys and Star & Garter, and those making their mark such as Mint Lounge and Moho. There’s such a diverse nightlife offering, including the trendy Deansgate Locks and Printworks, not to mention the vibrant Gay Village. There are also an array of traditional British pubs where you can enjoy a pint of Manchester brewed beer and meet the locals. Other entertainment includes comedy, theatre, classical music concerts such as the Hallé Orchestra at The Bridgewater Hall and more. Whether you want to dance the night away, be entertained by live music, or wind down in a bar, Manchester is the place to be.
The Northern Quarter is the hub of the creative community, bursting with independent, quirky bars and venues. Award-winning Odd offers continental beers against a funky setting, try cocktails in the sultry Socio Rehab, or listen to the latest up and coming DJ at Common. There are old favourites such as newly refurbished Cord Bar or Centro, and jazz bar Matt & Phred’s. This area represents the essence of Manchester’s character, individual and laid back, yet welcoming.

Southern gateway Maria Balshaw
Boundaries have blurred somewhat with the continued redevelopment in Manchester city centre. Manchester’s expansion into its suburbs has materialised through individual projects by a number of partnerships. Manchester City South incorporates an area from St Peter’s Square, along Oxford Road, to the University campuses and beyond. The City South partnership is overseeing a total investment of £1.5billion to develop infrastructure, transport and community projects within the area. Culture, entertainment and sport are at the very heart of City South. The area includes purpose built venues like Manchester Aquatics Centre, Contact Theatre and Whitworth Art Gallery. There’s also Cornerhouse cinema, Manchester Museum and Manchester Academy to name just a few.

Maria Balshaw, director of the Whitworth Art Gallery is heavily involved with the plans to enhance this area. Here, she explains why visitors should make a trip to the gallery and her vision of its future in this thriving part of the city. What can you tell us about the Whitworth Art Gallery? We’re surrounded by a beautiful green park that had some hard times in the past, but in recent times it has really been developed as a social space. The gallery has an eclectic range of collections. We have a really important fine art collection, with fantastic modern art. We have a stunning historic collection; beautiful 18th and 19th century landscapes painted by people like Constable, Girtin, Gainsborough and Turner: The gallery has 54 works by Turner alone. You can also look at textiles. From ancient Egyptian textiles (we have works in the collection that are nearly 2,000 years old and show the beginning of really important cultures and traditions), to works from the 16th Century in
visit www.manchesterconferences.com for your unique interactive search
England: incredibly beautiful tapestries. And we have works made out of new technological fabrics: stretched lycra and digitally screen printed. And lots of these are made in and around Manchester. You also have a great wallpaper collection. What can you tell us about that? It’s really unusual and the only other collection like ours is at the V&A in London. It’s popular because we’re all now into designing interiors and have really high aspirations for good design in our homes. Our collection goes from the 17th century: beautiful historic papers, to those being made now by top design companies and artists. There’s a real playfulness and fun in the wallpaper collection which is surprising to most visitors. And it’s uniquely Manchester because much of the wallpaper industry was based in the Northwest and so Manchester historically has been a kind of showroom for the industry.
How are you looking to develop the gallery over the next few years? We’ve got really ambitious plans. We want to extend out into the park. We’re putting in a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund so we can create a second entrance that will take you directly into the park. We want to put more exhibition space there for our landscape works. We’d like an outdoor cafe with canopied picnic tables too. And a really lovely shop selling craft by local makers and artists. Around the outside of the gallery we want to commission three international artists to develop the landscape outside. They will create sculptural shapes, spaces to sit in, relax, play and socialise. Enjoyment and family fun are an important aspect of your annual calendar. What can families expect from a visit to the Whitworth? It’s really important to me and the team that our gallery is for everybody from 0 to 90. We have a very active programme of events for families. They’re always on a drop-in basis; always free, always led by artists and always in relation to our collection. We do things like arty picnics (outdoors or indoors, dependent on the weather),
smelly/sticky art sessions where the kids are given things like potatoes, chocolate and jam for printing, and beauty walks where an artist leads a group of children to go and explore something in the park, bring it back to the gallery and then make a painting, a collage or a sculpture. Where else do you recommend to visit in Manchester? Visitors don’t always step outside the city centre enough. There are some fascinating places like Victoria Baths, partially renovated now, which people know from the BBC television programme ‘Restoration’. There’s a programme of artists work going on there at the moment. Along from there, is Elizabeth Gaskell’s House. She’s one of the famous 19th Century novelists that wrote about Manchester. Her rather beautiful residence is often open for visitors to see. If you go further along into Didsbury, there’s Fletcher Moss Gardens which are absolutely beautiful, you can walk through meadows and a secret hillside formal garden that has the most extraordinary collection of plants. You can be down there in 20-25 minutes from the city centre and feel like you’re a hundred miles from an urban centre.
FAVOURITE PLACES IN MANCHESTER Favourite restaurant Red Chilli on Portland Street. The best Sichuan food in Manchester. Really, really, fiery hot! Favourite shop Vivienne Westwood because the Manchester store is better than the others. They always seem to have the nicest things. Must do / see in Manchester Absolutely a visit to the Whitworth! My other recommendation is the Chinese Arts Centre. It has really unusual exhibitions around the year. Serviced Apartments
At the end of a long day of meetings and networking, swap the boardroom for an energising personal training session. A spacious serviced apartment allows delegates to take advantage of a wide range of health and therapy services that will ensure they start the next day on top form.
Gateway
to a great get-away
Thanks to Manchester’s central location and excellent air, rail and road transport links you have got the UK at your feet. Manchester offers a great gateway to England’s Northwest and beyond, so once the business in the conference hall is done why not take advantage of Manchester’s strategic location and give delegates the chance to experience the very best of the UK. Breathtaking scenery, dramatic coast lines, vibrant cities and quaint villages are just some of the delights waiting to be discovered.
Cumbria – the Lake District
Chester and Cheshire
From 16 sparkling lakes and England’s highest mountains, to sheltered valleys, heather moorlands and salty seascapes, Cumbria and the Lake District have inspired and captivated generations of visitors and famous writers and poets such as William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. But there’s more to see than just scenery. The area has a rich heritage to discover, a vibrant and contemporary cultural scene and a growing reputation for fine food and drink. And on top of all this, there is a huge choice of tourist activities in some of the best ‘Great Outdoors’ in the world.
Head south west of Manchester and delegates will discover the five star luxury of the Roman city of Chester, with its 21st century delights. Cheshire's sumptuous countryside welcomes all with fine food, world-class heritage and stunning scenery. Encircled by a glorious two-mile ring of Roman and medieval walls, Chester is a rare and truly magical blend of the ancient and traditional with modern cosmopolitan chic. Situated on the River Dee, close to the Welsh border, Chester is home to 2,000 years of history and is one of Britain’s Heritage Cities. Step back in time amid pristine Georgian and Victorian architecture, shop in the unique medieval two-tier galleries called the Rows and enjoy the city's classy café culture.
The unique landscape that inspired Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter today nurtures a new generation of writers, artists and musicians. Sculpture trails, poetry programmes, street art and theatre add up to a thriving cultural scene. The area has a fascinating heritage too. In stone circles and Roman forts, in historic houses and museums, the past still echoes. www.golakes.co.uk
Lancashire and Blackpool Discover the heart of the colourful county of Lancashire, where you will encounter beautiful countryside, seascapes and historical sights. Preston boasts some unique attractions such as Riversway, Europe's largest single dock basin, with its marina, leisure shopping and attractions. The Grade I listed Harris Museum and Art Gallery is a magnificent Greek Revival building dominating the centre of the town and houses an impressive collection of fine and modern art. The Lancashire coast covers around 220 kilometres (137 miles). It provides fascinating landscapes and attractions that you would find difficult to surpass elsewhere on the UK coast. Blackpool, the UK's most visited seaside resort, boasts its magnificent tower that stands 518 feet and nine inches high on Central Promenade and the Pleasure Beach provides 40 acres of fun with breath-taking attractions and world-class shows.

Liverpool City Region Liverpool is most famous as a port town and the birthplace of The Beatles. The city has many claims to fame, so many in fact, that it actually appears in the Guinness Book of World Records as the place with the most records. Whether it’s football at Liverpool or Everton, horseracing at Haydock or Aintree, or retracing the rock ‘n’ roll steps or the Fab Four, Liverpool genuinely does have something for everyone to enjoy. If culture is your thing then there’s also the Walker Art Gallery or TATE Liverpool. Great shopping can be found at the newly opened Liverpool One or one of the many boutiques dotted around the city. And being just 30 minutes from Manchester by train, a day trip to Liverpool is easily achieved. Southport is also 'England's Golfing Capital' with six championship courses including Royal Birkdale, which hosted The Open in 2008. The town is at the centre of 'England's Golf Coast' and no less than nineteen courses including the '3 Royals' can be reached in just over an hour from Manchester. www.visitliverpool.com

Conference Services
The printed materials given to delegates can make or break an event. Locally based conference service providers ensure that organiser’s requirements are produced to the highest quality and within the tightest of deadlines.
The Manchester events industry understands the need for a balance of environmental awareness, economic activity and social progress and in 2007 The Manchester International Festival was one of the first events to use BS8901 a British standard for the sustainability of an event. From attending education workshops to implementing leading standards the Manchester event community is keen to take a lead. Positive Impact is a not for profit education project which began in Manchester in 2004 with the aim of providing education to the events industry on sustainability. Now running education workshops across the world, Positive Impact provides delegates with the chance to learn from experts about the practical considerations for sustainability.
Sustainable Events Green Tourism takes into account the needs of the environment, local residents, businesses, and visitors; now and in the future. Fiona Pelham, founder of the Positive Impact project, is one of Manchester’s experts leading the way in the delivery of sustainable events. Green tourism businesses are those actively engaged in reducing the negative environmental and social impacts of their tourism operations.
Fiona Pelham launched the project and as well as being chair for the development of BS8901 into an ISO standard she also runs an event management company focused on sustainable events. As an event organiser what are the key considerations that need to be made in terms of sustainability and CSR when planning an event? Every event is different but the first step is to consider the economic, environmental and social impacts of your event. What elements of your event will have the greatest negative impacts and which do you have the most control over? Key areas to consider are: transport plans, materials being used and waste, which your event will generate. What benefits does acting sustainably bring to an event or conference? Sustainability makes good business sense so it is likely that a step to reduce negative environmental impact will also decrease your economic overheads (for example producing a lower amount of marketing materials). Most business brands now have commitments to sustainability so implementing sustainability in an event brings this commitment to life rather than damaging brand reputation. As a host city what can Manchester provide to both delegates and organisers to help them be sustainable? Manchester has a good infrastructure in terms of public transport and a good local supply chain, however Manchester goes one step beyond this and provides venues and suppliers who have been educated in the meaning of sustainability, ways to implement it and measure it. How can event organisers ensure that the venues and service providers are acting sustainably?
There are different certification schemes, which will help you to identify which suppliers or venues are acting sustainably. For example, the GBTS, ISO and British Standards help to identify those who are implementing sustainability. Organisers could also ask service providers for company policies or reports they have produced; by engaging with your suppliers you can determine the amount of co-operation they are prepared to give to help you to produce a sustainable event. What is the single one thing that an event organiser can change to their event programme to lessen its environmental impact? It’s difficult to pin point one action as every event will have different levels of impacts but the first thing an organiser could ask is; is the event actually needed in the first place? With the development in technology clients and organisers are now able to host events online. An organiser can also reduce the environmental impact of an event by asking these questions for all their materials; what is it, where did it come from, what is it made of, and where is it going? What is the future of sustainability in the events industry? The British Standard BS8901 Specification for a Sustainable Management System which was launched in 2007 has been widely adopted by the events industry in the UK and internationally. It is now starting its journey to become an ISO (international standard). The proposed standard will be open for commentary to the events industry; Sustainable Events Ltd can be contacted for more information admin@sustainableeventsltd.com The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a network-based organization that has pioneered the development of the worlds most widely used sustainability reporting framework. GRI produces Sector Supplements for those industries that have specific and unique needs when reporting on sustainability. Sustainable Events Ltd is facilitating the development and trialling of a new Events Sector Supplement in the industry. It’s a great opportunity for the event sector to act with integrity, transparency and those organisations willing to trial the Events Sector Supplement will have the opportunity to be leaders in the industry. What future projects are you working on to improve Manchester’s prominence as a sustainable destination? A new series of Positive Impact education workshops will start in April 2010, we are also organising sustainable events with environmental agencies and local festivals.

Manchester Airport Your gateway to the North of England. Situated in the heart of the UK, Manchester’s award-winning airport prides itself on being one of the world’s busiest and friendliest. As the largest airport outside of London, Manchester Airport handles over 20 million passengers per year. Its facilities are world class with three terminals, two runways, over 250 check-in desks and 65 airline operators. Over 190 destinations worldwide are served from this international hub and a comprehensive European and domestic air network enables visitors to use the city as a convenient base for transfers to the rest of the UK and indeed Europe.

If Manchester is your gateway to exploring the many attractions the North of England has to offer, or alternatively the venue for a connecting flight, why not take advantage of the fantastic offers available from the array of hotels located on the doorstep of Manchester Airport.
