What’s New in Manchester? 2014 is set to be an exciting year, with new hotels, flights and re-openings as well as spectacular events taking place across the region. New Flights A number of new direct services are coming to Manchester, adding to the city’s direct connectivity to Europe and the US. Germanwings launches Hamburg-Manchester in spring and Jet2.com, Vienna-Manchester in May. For the summer season only the following direct flights will be available to Manchester: Charlotte, USA with US Airlines from May and Toronto with Air Canada from July.

Accommodation Update The Travelodge Piccadilly Gardens with 157 bedrooms and the 4-star Melia Innside Hotel with 208 bedrooms are both set to open this year. Work will commence on the following hotels, which will open in 2015: Motel One (330 rooms), Holiday Inn on Aytoun Street, Piccadilly (340 rooms), Gotham Hotel on King Street, a 5-star boutique (66 rooms) and Yotel Manchester (258 rooms).

Hotel Football - October 2014 Manchester United legends Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville have partnered up off the pitch for the first time for this exciting venture. Located on the doorstep of Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United Football Club, Hotel Football will offer a memorable and vibrant experience with football at its heart. Guests will be inspired by the unique interior design and use of space.

Sanctuary from the Trenches – Stamford Military Hospital at Dunham Massey Hall The doors of Dunham Massey Hall open on 1 March 2014 and will be a very different place to how the country house it is now. They are marking the centenary of the First World War by telling the story of the Stamford Military Hospital, the convalescent hospital in the hall in which 282 soldiers were treated between April 1917 and January 1919.

The Albert Hall, February This Grade II listed Wesleyan chapel in the city centre has been resurrected by Trof, the people behind bars/venues Gorilla and The Deaf Institute, as an unrivalled events venue, restaurant and bar. The grand and ornate chapel has been restored into a stunning purpose built music hall and is set to become one of the most atmospheric music and events venues in the UK. The full venue will be revealed in February 2014.

Central Library Re-opening The beautifully refurbished and extended Central Library will re-open again in spring 2014. The historic features are being sensitively and carefully restored as they bring the building up to 21st century standards.

Whitworth Art Gallery Re-opening Autumn

Castlefield Artisan Market

A stunning new extension will be the centrepiece of a £15 million transformation that will reconnect the gallery with the surrounding Whitworth Park. It will double public space and create state of the art new facilities with a characteristically bold and varied programme. There will be expanding gallery spaces, a learning studio and study centre, collections access zone, art garden and café nestling amongst the trees.

This new market runs the 1st Sunday of every month in Castlefield, the most picturesque area of the city and is Manchester’s biggest fine food, crafts and vintage market. The Victorian Hall holds over 70 stalls brimming with antiques and bric-a-brac – and brings together specialist producers, artists and collectors from the region.

2014 - 2018 marks the centenary of the First World War, a landmark anniversary for Britain and the world. IWM North will mark the centenary by leading a vibrant, four year programme of cultural activities including a major exhibition called From Street to Trench: A War That’s Shaped a region. The Museum will also showcase photography depicting the role women played in WWI and an art installation called Reactions 14.

War Horse tells the powerful and uplifting story of young Albert, his beloved horse Joey, and the unimaginable obstacles they overcome. Hailed by Time Magazine as ‘a landmark theatre event’, War Horse is an unforgettable experience, filled with stirring music and songs. At its heart are astonishing life-sized puppets by South Africa’s award-winning Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.

4. Chinatown The largest Chinatown outside London, this colourful district is bursting with authentic restaurants, bakeries and businesses. Its iconic ornate Arch was a gift from Manchester City Council to the Chinese Community. Every year Manchester’s Chinese New Year spectacular celebrations light up the city with its Dragon Parade, food stalls and special promotions.

Shopping Capital of the North From stylish shopping malls to specialist markets stalls, quirky boutiques to vintage treasure troves – the city offers a unique and diverse shopping experience. Selfridges, Exchange Square

Junk Shop, Northern Quarter

Manchester is a shopper’s heaven, its compact nature means that visitors can weave from street to store on foot, or take advantage of the Metroshuttle, the free city centre bus linking all shopping areas. Retailers line the streets and can be found hidden round every corner, under railway bridges and arches - nestled in between are award-winning attractions, restaurants and bars. The best times to visit Manchester for a bargain are during the January and Summer sale seasons, in between are mid-season sales – when visitors can buy exclusive labels at a fraction of the price.

Luxury Brands The city centre is a haven for the fashion conscious. The upmarket King Street is lined with decadent designer stores such as Gant, Whistles, Boodles, DKNY and Cath Kidston. In nearby Spinningfields, The Avenue’s catwalk of luxury stores include Mulberry, Flannels and Armani. New Cathedral Street and Exchange Square are home to two of the UK’s biggest department stores – Selfridges and Harvey Nichols – offering high-end fashion, beauty and dining across exclusive brands.

High Street Market Street is the central shopping artery where Manchester Arndale’s 240 stores stock high street labels galore, including NEXT, Clarks, Topshop and Kurt Geiger. At the top of Market Street is a flagship Primark for budget conscious shoppers, and at the bottom you will find a flagship M&S store. St Ann’s Square and neighbouring Deansgate is where heritage British brands reign supreme and where Manchester’s oldest department store, House of Fraser resides.

Independent & Unique Independent fashion can be found in the bohemian Northern Quarter, home to an array of retro and vintage outlets bursting with unique clothing, records, artwork and more. The area is home to Afflecks, an Aladdin’s cave of traders offering everything from top hats to tattoos, as well as numerous bars and cafés where visitors can unwind either mid-shop or at the end of their retail experience.

European Christmas Markets Every November the city centre is transformed by the bustle and excitement of the markets which get bigger and better each year. Over 300 beautifully festooned wooden houses at eight different sites will tempt visitors with unique gifts, crafts, jewellery, clothes and toys, as well as the array of delicious food and drink.

Spinningfields Ice Rink Along with hosting the only ice rink in the city centre at Hardman Square, the whole estate is awash with activity including late night shopping on The Avenue, a Victorian fair, a helter skelter and pop-up bars. Open seven days a week over two months starting in November, the ice rink offers the chance to skate under the stars, with ‘penguin’ guides for hire to skate alongside the under 10s. There are also a number of food and drink outlets and the big screen featuring Christmas films and music to get people in the festive mood.

Music and Theatre Evening entertainment throughout the winter months is varied, with pantomime and musical programmes in most theatres including the Opera House and Palace Theatre from December through to January. Coach Parking Manchester provides on-street short stay parking for coaches wanting to drop off or pick up visitors close to a number of city centre attractions and venues. Transport Information Connectivity to the rest of the country means that Manchester is an ideal gateway to the UK. Once visitors arrive in the city, getting around couldnt be easier with the fleet of buses, trains and trams.

Bus

Road access to and around Manchester is excellent, the M60 is Manchester’s orbital motorway allowing access to the whole of Greater Manchester. In the city, there are a number of car parks; NCP (ncp.co.uk) has over 13,000 car parking spaces across 43 sites, including a number of exclusive parent and child bays and green bays for vehicles with low emissions. Parking with NCP in the city centre starts from just £1.60 an hour.

Trains

Buses are an excellent way to see the city and the wider region of Greater Manchester. A comprehensive network offers fast and frequent services to many destinations. In the city centre hop on one of the Metroshuttle buses. Metroshuttle buses are free and link the main rail stations, shopping areas and businesses in the city centre. tfgm.com

Trams
