Welcome to Manchester Manchester is one of the UK’s most diverse and cosmopolitan cities, attracting visitors with its fine traditions of sport, culture, music and top class events. With its welcoming attitude, varied tourist attractions, quality shopping and legendary nightlife, Manchester is, quite rightly so, the third most visited destination in the UK. The city has a rich industrial heritage and is renowned for being a city of firsts: the birthplace of the industrial revolution, the splitting of the atom and most recently, the discovery of Graphene, the world’s thinnest and strongest material. Cultural venues are in abundance, from the National Football Museum to the dramatic Lowry and inspirational Manchester Art Gallery. The city hosts world-class events such as Manchester International Festival, attracting visitors from all over the globe. Shopping in Manchester never fails to impress, with luxury department stores Harvey Nichols and Selfridges offering the best in international designer labels, and renowned brands such as Vivienne Westwood and Mulberry both with flagship

stores in the city. Many of these retailers offer tax free shopping for visitors coming from outside of the EU. Independent fashion retailers also thrive in Manchester, such as Renegade Marmalade and Nina Merabi, as well as many vintage outlets within the bohemian Northern Quarter district. Its central location and accessibility makes Manchester the perfect base for exploring the beautiful North West region. Vibrant cities like Chester and Liverpool and stunning countryside in national parks like the Peak and Lake Districts are just one hour’s drive away. Manchester’s integrated transport network means visitors can find their way around easily using Piccadilly Station – the primary gateway to explore the rest of the UK – with London just over two hours away and Scotland only three. Manchester Airport’s growing capacity means that there are over 190 direct connections worldwide, from Europe, the US, Asia and the Middle East. Due to these links the city is
ideally suited to being the first or last destination as part of a UK or European tour. Manchester’s appeal to groups, whether from national or overseas locations, continues to grow at pace. The city was awarded ‘Best UK Destination for Groups’ runner up in the 2012 Group Travel Awards and welcomes almost 1 million international visitors every year, which is testament to the standards of excellence from across the Greater Manchester tourism industry. The vast choice of places to stay, from budget hostels and five star hotels, to the increasingly popular apart-hotel accommodation, makes planning packages and coordinating a short break simple. There is a large network of suppliers based here, from ground handlers to full service destination management companies, waiting to make your itineraries as memorable and Mancunian as possible.

Manchester - a city of firsts The birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, vegetarianism and the Suffragettes movement, Manchester’s entrepreneurial and innovative spirit has helped the city lead the world in the fields of engineering, politics, arts, sports and music.
Manchester is a city of firsts, having introduced the computer, professional football league and passenger railway before anyone else. A city of social reformers, liberal thinkers and visionaries, it was here where the great wealth that came with industrial success grew up hand in hand with social responsibility and patronage of the arts, creating the cultural legacy that we all enjoy today. With such a colourful past, there are a host of free visitor attractions and places of interest that pay homage to the city’s fascinating heritage. MOSI (Museum of Science and Industry) is home to life-size models and original contraptions that tell the story of Manchester’s contribution to the modern world. Set on the site of the first ever passenger railway, MOSI brings to life science and technology, innovation, computing and transport. A great day out for all ages. The People’s History Museum is where visitors can discover just how far the UK has come in terms of social and political justice. With changing exhibitions as well as permanent galleries, PHM tells the story of
social reform through five galleries themed Revolution, Reformers, Workers, Citizens and Voters. Manchester Town Hall, a Grade I listed, neoclassical, gothic masterpiece is also well worth a visit. With fantastic architecture and numerous sculptures of Manchester’s past ‘great and good’, the Town Hall offers guided tours and traditional Afternoon Tea packages in its grand Sculpture Hall. For historical significance, Manchester’s buildings have some great stories to tell. Chetham’s Library, the oldest public library in the English speaking world, is set in a collection of medieval buildings dating back to 1421. It was here where Karl Marx met Friedrich Engels. Visitors can take guided tours throughout the building on Wednesday afternoons. Nearby, Manchester Cathedral offers a wealth of magnificent architecture to explore. For a unique overnight stay, The Midland Hotel is where Mr. Rolls met Mr. Royce for the very first time in 1904 and from this, one of the most prestigious automobile brands was born. John Rylands Library is one of the city’s historic landmarks. Winner of the Large
Tourist Attraction at the 2012 Manchester Tourism Awards, the neo-gothic library was built in the 1890s and today houses a number of world renowned book collections. Fantastic evening entertainment can found at the Bridgewater Hall. Home to the Hallé Orchestra, founded by Sir Charles Hallé in 1858, the orchestra continues its concert series to this day in a state-of-the-art auditorium. The Royal Exchange Theatre is housed in a Grade II listed building which was once formerly Manchester’s huge cotton exchange hall during the height of the Industrial Revolution. The city’s only theatrein-the-round, groups can enjoy generous discounts and popular seasons of plays and performances. A great way to learn more about Manchester’s history and heritage is to book a guided walking tour where a number of friendly, knowledgeable tour guides can offer a range of themed tours in English and other languages. manchesterguidedtours.com

If Manchester is the last leg of a journey, visitors need to produce their goods, receipts and passport in order to get the forms stamped by a Customs Officer at Manchester Airport. Once stamped, the form should be deposited in the dedicated refund box. Terms and conditions apply.

Food For Thought The cosmopolitan nature of Manchester can be truly seen in the diversity of culinary establishments that serve up a range of cuisines from around the world.
From the inviting aromas of Chinatown and the tantalising tastes of Rusholme’s Curry Mile, to the slick and stylish eateries of Spinningfields, Manchester is sure to tantalise a variety of tastes and budgets. Whether it’s fine French dining, Greek grills or succulent Spanish tapas, visitors can dine their way around the globe each night of the week. Not forgetting the myriad of restaurants where locally sourced, seasonal British ingredients are always the order of the day. Daytime deals, cheap eats and special lunch offers are promoted in a number of restaurants so if budgets are low, visitors should look out for ‘early bird’ deals. For a more luxurious dining experience, many of the city’s top hotels have destination restaurants,
with exceptionally talented chefs at the helm, whilst a little out of town there are hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Local seasonal produce and delicious treats are also available at a number of city centre food markets throughout the year. Manchester’s annual Food and Drink Festival has been running for the last 15 years and takes place each October, bringing ‘foodies’ together for a week of events, celebrity chef demonstrations and tastings across the city. Bolton Food and Drink Festival is also a key event in the culinary calendar, taking place annually in August. visitmanchester.com/food

Transport Information Manchester is one of the most accessible cities in the UK thanks to its location and excellent transport infrastructure. Connectivity to the rest of the UK makes Manchester an ideal gateway. Once visitors arrive in the city, getting around couldn’t be easier thanks to a fleet of buses, trains and trams.
Bus & Coach
Trams The city’s Metrolink (metrolink.co.uk) network is one of the most successful light rail systems in the UK, carrying nearly 20 million passengers every year. With services roughly every five to ten minutes, it is a great mode of transport. Tickets are purchased on the platform before boarding.
Trains
Within the city centre, Metroshuttle provides a free ‘hop on, hop off’ service that links all of the main rail stations, shopping districts and business areas. It runs every ten minutes from 7am - 7pm, Monday to Saturday and 10am - 6pm on Sundays.
There are four main stations in the city centre: Piccadilly, Oxford Road, Victoria and Deansgate. Piccadilly is the main arrival point for those flying into Manchester Airport or travelling up from London.
Across Greater Manchester, Arriva (arrivabus.co.uk), First (firstgroup.com) and Stagecoach (stagecoachbus.com) operate a comprehensive network.
The city has direct rail services south to Birmingham, Chester, Reading, Bristol and Plymouth as well as north to the Lake District, Leeds, York, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Further afield, National Express provides services from all over the country into Chorlton Street Coach Station in the heart of the city (nationalexpress.co.uk).
Operators include: •CrossCountry Trains crosscountrytrains.co.uk
There are also official coach parking bays and drop off/pick up points across the city centre, see pages 38 and 39 for a full map.
•First Great Western firstgreatwestern.co.uk •Northern Rail northernrail.org •TransPennineExpress tpexpress.co.uk
Road Manchester is well connected to the rest of the UK via excellent motorway links. The M60 ring road connects the city to motorways north, south, east and west. In the city, NCP (ncp.co.uk) has over 13,000 car parking spaces across 43 sites, including a number of exclusive parent and child bays and green bays for vehicles with low emissions. Parking with NCP in the city centre starts from just £1.60 an hour.
