‘Open Door, Explore’ Self-Programmed Wednesdays at The Manchester Museum Unearthed: Ancient Egypt Key Stage 1 and 2

This activity is to help your group explore objects from the past lives of ancient Egyptian people. Our temporary Egypt gallery can be found on the ground floor next to the Museum’s shop. Below are some instructions about how to use this resource in a 30 minute session. Split your class into 5 groups; give each group two ‘object clues’ from the list below. The group have to try and find the objects on the gallery. Future Archaeology: What do you think the future can learn about our lives from the objects we leave behind? In your groups can you think of 5 things that you would want to leave behind for future archaeologists to dig up and learn about our lives? Explain why you have chosen the objects that you have, are they about your hobbies, school life, home life, entertainment or local events? What am I? In your 5 groups can you find two objects in the exhibition? Object A: I am used in the home. I am made from glass and can be very useful for storing things. What am I? Object B: I am used in the home. I provide entertainment for the family and can be the source of squabbles and celebrations. What am I? Object C: I am used in the Egyptian’s working life. I am a home for a special insect and I store a really yummy tasting food product. You have to be very careful around me, definitely don’t shake me, what am I? Object D: I am used in the Egyptian’s working life. I am very strong and I am made out of copper alloy. I need to be sharpened regularly to do my best work. What am I? Object E: I am part of the Egyptian’s beliefs. I am very special to my owner. People look after me and tell me their secret wishes. What am I? Object F: I am part of the Egyptian’s beliefs. I am made up of different sections and look like a mini model of a home. I am usually made out of pottery, I am very important to the Egyptian families. What am I? Object G: I belong to the language and learning part of Egyptian life. I help to produce beautiful and detailed hieroglyphics. I belong to a very important person. What am I? Object H: I belong to the language and learning part of Egyptian life. I am one of the many tools needed to be able to mix different colours on. What am I?
