‘Open Door, Explore’ Self-Programmed Wednesdays at The Manchester Museum Living Worlds Gallery – KS3 (Booking Essential)
The Living Worlds gallery is accompanied by an ‘App’ which can be downloaded from Appstore on most Smartphones. It can be used in the gallery to find out more information about the displays. The App is called Living Worlds and has a butterfly logo. http://www.museum.manchester.ac.uk/yourvisit/galleries/livingworlds/ The Living Worlds App enables your students to get their bearings in the gallery before they arrive and also access the ideas and information once they leave so it can be used for follow up work at school. We would suggest that you become familiar with the App before your visit and you could focus their questioning and research on the gallery with the app to suit your own needs. You could encourage your students to download the app on their smartphone before their visit to The Manchester Museum. Once on the gallery, the students will have to log onto the ‘museum’ wifi network to get the best signal and get the full benefits of the app. A member of staff will be able to help you with this if needed. You can use the app with your students in the following ways: 1. Find out further information about the objects and specimens on displays 2. Watch videos showing how the different themes that are explore in Living Worlds are connected to particular people’s lives 3. Find more images of the animals on display though the ARKive image database 4. To get inspiration of actions that can be taken to address some of the issues explored in the gallery 5. To find out ways to get involved and show how individuals can make a difference in the future of the earth. Another online resource that uses the themes explored in the Living Worlds gallery in solving tasks and mysteries suitable for KS3 and 4 is The Museum of Mystery (www.museumofmystery.org.uk). This interactive website uses the museums objects and expertise from our staff to provide evidence to solve mysteries and rise through the ranks from being a ‘trainee’ to ‘super investigator’. This would be a perfect pre- or postvisit resource.
