Exhibitions & Events Sep – Dec 2011

Whitworth Art Gallery

Welcome Dark Matters are afoot at the Whitworth as we say goodbye to summer and projections in our park. With nights closing in the flickering images are all inside, as part of an exhibition that explores the science as well as the wonder of digital art making. With artists from across the globe including new commissions by Ja-Young Ku (Korea) and Brass Art (Manchester), visitors will encounter the playful and the menacing dimensions of a world of shadow and light. With a lively After Hours programme and a Shadow Lab for all our family visitors there will be much to capture the imagination as we hurtle forwards to the shortest day. Enjoy the darkness.

Cyprien Gaillard Whitworth Park Obelisk A permanent sculpture by the celebrated French artist Cyprien Gaillard has been commissioned by the Whitworth and installed in the centre of Whitworth Park. The work is a traditional obelisk shape, and is made from recycled brick and concrete – the brick from recently demolished late nineteenth-century houses in the Bowes Street area of Moss Side, and the concrete from the remains of the1960s flats that were located around Bonsall Street in Hulme.

The obelisk has been made possible through the assistance of Councillors Mary Murphy and Alastair Cox, Manchester City Council, Friends of Whitworth Park, Manchester Metropolitan University and GB Building Solutions. It was fabrictated by Stockley and Thorp Precast, with aggregate produced by Offerton Sand and Gravel.

Shadow • Technology • Art 24 September 2011 – 15 January 2012 Encounter phantoms in the mirror, captured spirits and playful shadows as the Whitworth’s spaces become populated by works of darkness and wonder. Exploring the impact of scientific, digital and mechanical invention upon visual culture, Dark Matters brings together the work of ten internationally acclaimed artists from across the globe who engage with ideas of darkness and shadow through a range of technologies. In an exhibition populated by half-seen spectres, visual riddles and distorted reflections, these artists explore themes of time, illusion and memory through a variety of media and machinery. The exhibition includes a newly commissioned installation by Korean artist Ja-Young Ku who engages with the ghostly remnants of his former actions through performance and projection. Works by Daniel Rozin combine state-of-the-art digital software with wooden machinery and suspended silk to create art objects of technological wonder. R. Luke DuBois’ sparkling computer-generated version of cinematic romance and Barnaby

Hosking’s imposing Black Flood challenge our perceptions in the dark and large photographic prints by Idris Khan present historically important texts as translucent, layered shadows. Highlights from the Whitworth’s outstanding collection, dealing with ideas of darkness and shadow, will be on display in the relatively tangible, stable media of print, drawing and painting. A diverse array of works by artists such as Rembrandt, Paula Rego, Rachel Whiteread, JMW Turner and Francis Bacon are included. In collaboration with Animate Projects and to coincide with the opening of Dark Matters, the Whitworth presents a four-week screening of work by contemporary animators who make use of a variety of techniques and technologies to engage with themes of loss, memory, darkness and light. In response to Dark Matters, the Friends of the Whitworth present a programme of film screenings. In this selection of film noir thrillers and historic chillers, shadows play the lead role in creating drama, magic and beauty.

Events: A wide range of Adult Programme events accompany this exhibition from a Movie Night: Film Noir season to After Hours festive treat. See pages 05 – 07 for details. Air Pressure 5 November 2011 – 15 January 2012 Our globalised contemporary world has been made possible and shaped fundamentally by international air travel; but at what costs to our sense of place and our wellbeing? This multi-media installation explores the clash between traditional farming life in Japan and the technology and economy of international travel. Two remaining farming families still live at the end of the runway at Narita International Airport in Japan. This exhibition follows one family who have refused to move elsewhere despite pressure from the authorities since the planning and construction of the airport in the 1970s. Air Pressure uses sound recordings, on-site and archive film, to represent the sonic experience of living and working on this farm, which is surrounded by the airport’s infrastructure and constantly monitored by surveillance and sound measuring mechanisms. Air Pressure allows the audience a vicarious, immersive experience of the site and an opportunity to address debates on the impact of aircraft noise on our lives. The installation is being created by Rupert Cox, from the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester, Angus Carlyle, a sound artist and Reader at the University of the Arts, London, in collaboration with Professor Kozo Hiramatsu, Japan’s foremost acoustic scientist and UK president of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. w: http://airpressure.posterous.com

Symposium: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Thursday 5 January The creators of Air Pressure will talk about their work and the ways that art-science collaborations illuminate the social, political and ethical issues in the public understanding of science. They will be joined by speakers from Japan to reflect on the Air Pressure project, and discuss examples of disaster and disease in Japan and elsewhere. The symposium will be followed by a concert of contemporary sound art. For more information or to book: e: whitworth@manchester.ac.uk or t: 0161 275 7450

Air Pressure is supported by a Wellcome Trust Arts Award. In partnership with Asia Triennial Manchester 2011, initiated by Shisha, a festival of current contemporary visual art and craft from Asia. For more information visit: w: www.asiatriennialmanchester.com w: www.shisha.net
