Concerts in the Park popular as ever You’re sitting on your front porch in Fair Haven on a humid, summer night after a stressful day at work. You hear a robin anticipating dusk, some children playing nearby, and then the tell-tale opening notes from one of your favorite 60’s tunes drifting down the street from the town park. Or you could be vacationers
B I N G O
from Boston, on your way back to the rented cabin on Lake Bomoseen after a day with the kids at the Great Escape in New York. An energetic bluegrass fiddle catches your ear through open car windows as you drive through downtown Fair Haven. You begin tapping your foot and just can’t resist stopping to hear more.

The Fair Haven Concerts in the Park offer both area residents and tourists a chance to relax on a blanket or lawn chair in the grass and hear some great music in the summer. These free concerts will be held every Thursday night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. for 10 weeks, from June 11 until Aug. 13. “It’s a perfect location because it’s one of the nicest town parks in the state,” said Scott Lobdell of Castleton, a Concert Series Committee member. “We decided to start the concert dates earlier this year so that it wouldn’t be getting so dark at the end of the events later in the summer,” he said. The committee was established five years ago to help stabilize and grow the concerts, as well as be able to attract more performers and sponsors. The event has subsequently become well-established as a destination point and typically drew at least 300 or 400 people to each concert last year, according to Lobdell. “Last year I saw license plates at the Concerts from as far away as Texas, Nevada and even the Virgin Islands,” he said. The concert series features a wide range of musical acts to suit most tastes and draws heavily from local talent. It includes honky-tonk, countrywestern, bluegrass and Celtic/ Irish as well as Big Band, classic 60’s and 70’s popular music and jazz vocalists. Four of the scheduled performers for 2015 are returnees from last year’s schedule and six are new. The Committee likes to rotate in new talent each year while also offering repeats of particularly popular acts. In recent history, to stabilize and grow the event, committee members began recruiting business sponsorships that enabled them to attract more entertainers and to minimize

town costs, Lobdell said. “This year we’re holding four free-ice-cream nights,” he said. These will be on June 11, sponsored by Stewart’s; July 2, sponsored by Fair Haven Chrysler-Dodge; July 16, sponsored by the Rutland County Remote Control Flyers; and Aug.6, sponsored by Durkee Insurance. As always, the concerts will include door prize raffles for both adults and children, a 50/50 raffle, and hot dogs, popcorn, water and soft drinks for sale. A variety of raffle prizes are donated each year including such items as hand-made pottery, refills of propane and gift certificates to local restaurants. The schedule of performers: June 11—Starline Rhythm Boys (Honky-Tonk) June 18—Mellow Yellow (classic 60’s and 70’s) June 25—Santa Croce Family Band (family singers) July 2—Spurs USA (Country & Western) July 9—James Mee Band (acoustic adult/contemporary) July 16—Enerjazz (Big Band) July 23—Aaron Audet Band (contemporary popular) July 30—Snake Mountain Bluegrass Aug. 6—J.P. Murphy Band (traditional Celtic/Irish) Aug. 13—Maple Jam (a capella jazz singers) There is plenty of parking around the park, including disabled parking available close to the bandstand at the west side of the park. If the weather is bad, the concerts will once again be moved to the inside of the nearby Fair Haven Baptist Church. For more information, check out www.fairhavenvt. org/concerts. And watch for the concert schedule sign posted in the park in May.
Fair Haven Rescue Squad Serves Many It used to be that volunteers would suffice in small communities to staff such services as fire and emergency response. Those days are long gone in many Vermont towns, which may be sad for the reduced spirit of volunteerism, but better for overall safety. “Nobody has the time to volunteer as an emergency responder now,” said Lori Darrah, Fair Haven Rescue Squad administrator. “There are so many training requirements alone and people don’t have time to do it while trying to make a living.” In fact, basic certification training to be an EMT (emergency medical technician) takes about 180 hours, with annual recertification requiring another 48 to 72 hours depending on the level of expertise. Paramedics need even more education. The Fair Haven Rescue Squad made the transition from half-volunteer/half-paid staff to all paid staff more than 10 years ago. It employs 20 people, with two staff on duty 24/7, including at least one paramedic. The squad serves the towns of Fair Haven, West Haven, Benson and Hubbardton in Vermont and has a contract for services with Hampton in New York. Many people don’t realize that the squad’s services are not free

and, according to Darrah, about 85 percent of its revenue is through insurance billing. It also requests support at the annual meetings of the Vermont towns which it serves. All approved of these funds again this year. “We try to remain as self-sufficient as possible,” Darrah said. “We typically don’t ask towns for any increase in money each year.” Another way that the squad supplements its budget is by offering membership to area residents for $40 a year, covering July 1 to June 30. Darrah says that the number of members has remained at

around 180 since this option was first offered and it covers all costs related to emergency responders. There is also no annual limit on use of those services. The Fair Haven Rescue Squad, located at 17 Prospect Street, has three ambulances on-site. Darrah said a new defibrillator and a power stretcher were acquired last year. The squad is also looking at acquiring either a new ambulance or “reboxing” one of their current ones. “The stretcher is a good acquisition because doing this type of work is hard on the back over time,”
she said. Darrah said the squad typically responds to more than 700 calls a year. In the fiscal year that ended on July 1, 2014, there were 744 calls. “Most are for general illness, with cardiac issues in second place,” she said. The vast majority of calls require transport to a medical facility such as the Rutland Regional Medical Center. Be sure to watch for information about the annual Fair Haven Rescue Squad’s membership offer in the Lakes Region Free Press in June and elsewhere.

‘Fair Haven Concerned’ relocates downtown A major change came for Fair Haven Concerned (FHC) on Nov. 1, 2014. A big change of scene. After 31 years operating in space at the old elementary school on Washington Street, generously provided by the Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church, the non-profit moved to a downtown site in the historic block on Main Street. “We appreciate everything they’ve done for us and they remain major supporters, but we simply outgrew that space,” noted Ashley Bride, FHC’s executive director, of FHC’s old home. Outgrowing a space is certainly a good sign because it indicates that FHC is serving more people in the community and that there is increased awareness of the non-profit. The new location also allows for further growth and locating in the core of town puts the organization more physically in the public eye. Fair Haven Concerned was established in 1983 as a direct response to federal government cutbacks in social services and assistance. Its purpose was to help people in need in the communities of Fair Haven, Benson and West Haven and to help cover some of the service gaps caused by those federal cuts. All three communities, at that time, approved of funding for the non-profit at their annual town meetings and this included the hiring of an executive director. FHC offers an array of services that help needy people get back on their feet, while also passing on that giving spirit to others and helping to develop more stable and happy communities. One area of great need is for
Executive Director Ashley Bride with the Fair Haven Concerned donor list. food and FHC offers a Food Shelf that is open from 4 to 6 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, distribution of baked goods, monthly offerings of “commodity” items, and the distribution of holiday baskets at both Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Food Shelf serves about 45-50 households each month. Volunteers are key to the success of these efforts, as is the support of the Vermont Food Bank. FHC’s nutrition program is a successful collaboration with the Fair Haven Recreation Program’s summer program and other efforts in the warmer months. Over the summer of 2014, from late June through mid-August, this provided more than 8,000 breakfasts and lunches to area youth. FHC also offers an emergency fund with monies available for heating and cooking fuel, electricity, shelter and transportation. The non-profit collaborates with many other Rutland County providers, such as BROC/ Community Action of
Southwestern Vermont, in these efforts and if FHC can’t help, they will refer to other agencies that may be able to assist. Other FHC services include budget counseling, support and advocacy, assistance with various types of paperwork, help with applying for Medicare or Medicaid, and much more. The FHC is governed by a 15-member Board of Directors that Bride describes as dedicated and caring. “These folks are truly invested in the organization,” she said. “They have a passion for it.” She pointed out that several current board members have been with the FHC since its founding days. That passion for FHC may be why its volunteer participation has about doubled in the last year as well. And now those volunteers have a larger, more central space in which to help move the organization in some new directions. One of those is a thrift store. “We’ll be having a grand
opening for the new thrift store on May 1,” said Bride. This will be located in the front of the new space for maximum visibility from the street. “We’ve already had one sale day, with another planned for April, and the line waiting for the doors to open stretched around the corner.” Though any change is difficult and there have been some questions about FHC moving downtown, Bride notes that a survey circulated at polling sites back in November 2014 indicated that 66 percent of respondents wanted to see a thrift store in downtown Fair Haven. The store will also help FHC afford its new space. Items to be sold at the thrift store are yet to be determined, but FHC is accepting donations, by appointment, of clothing that is clean, in good condition, and suitable to the season. It will also offer new, Vermont-made items donated by one of its long-time supporters, the Vermont Country Store. FHC continues to receive financial assistance each year through annual town meeting votes, as well as from the United Way of Rutland County, various grant funds, and from annual fundraising events. The latter include its Gala in December, which brings in money specifically for the emergency fuel fund and emergency assistance program. Fair Haven Concerned’s office hours are 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Friday. Project Graduation offers seniors fun, safe celebration High school graduation parties have always been traditional. Unfortunately, in the past that tradition often included drinking alcohol and, perhaps, use of drugs. These days, however, high school seniors at Fair Haven Union High School have a safe, fun alternative for a night of celebration following their graduation ceremony. “Project Graduation first started here in 1986 when I was a senior,” said Kim Alexander, who is one of the parents of seniors active in the group this year. “It was intended as a drug and alcohol-free celebration for seniors. My class was the first to benefit from it and I wanted to give my daughter the same chance to participate in an awesome event.” That first Project Graduation event was held at
the high school. Later it was moved to Castleton State College and then to the Fun Spot near Lake George in Queensbury, N.Y. The Fair Haven graduation is set for Friday, June 12, at 7 p.m. Afterwards, Project Graduation offerings at the Fun Spot will include roller skating, laser tag, bumper cars and miniature golf. Project Graduation organizers have also arranged for other fun activities such as a hired hypnotist and a climbing wall coordinated by the National Guard. There will also be plenty of food offered throughout the night and early morning hours as well as the showing of a video that will feature highlights of the seniors’ last year at FHUHS. All of this costs money and the main focus of Project Graduation throughout the
school year is on fundraising for the event. Fundraisers have included a rifle raffle held last fall before hunting season, a chicken and biscuit dinner held at the Wheel Inn in Benson, another rifle raffle in time for turkey hunting season, a basket raffle held on April 11, and a fuel and fun raffle that included such prizes as propane, dry wood and wood pellets. “We’ve had tremendous support and generous donations from numerous local businesses as well as many parents,” said Alexander. “I’m really humbled by the generosity out there.” Comprised of the parents of high school seniors, Project Graduation volunteers meet on a bi-weekly basis at the high school. Alexander noted that there has been a core of very active parents and that many others help out with activities
such as raffle ticket sales and obtaining donations. She said that it is a challenge to the get the word out to all of the parents of seniors, but that some ways the group does this is through Facebook and high school announcements. FHUHS seniors do need to sign-up beforehand to participate in the Project Graduation festivities and get parental permission for activities such as the climbing wall. They may also bring one guest to the Fun Spot for the event. After graduation the bus leaves for the Fun Spot by about 9:30 p.m. It returns to the school around 4:30 a.m. and a breakfast is provided there by the parents of high school juniors. For more information about 2015’s Project Graduation, contact Kim Alexander at (802) 2654966.

THE “HEART” OF FAIR HAVEN
I was born and raised in Poultney. I live in Castleton and play on Lake Bomoseen, but I work in the “Heart” of Fair Haven.
Like others in the Fair Haven Community, we work hard to innovate, create and make our Business District attractive to the public who pass through. Take a look at our beautiful park, our beautiful “skyscrapers”. Listen to the concerts in the park. Count the smiles on the faces of our children and our citizens. Fair Haven is not only open for business, but it is a wonderful place to spend time. Like many competent lawyers in Rutland County, we strive to competently advise and represent our clients, while fitting into our rural Vermont setting. Fair Haven Business District is filled with business people who seek to serve the public and provide the services or commodities that are needed in our community. My assistant, Linda Way, and I try to be courteous, efficient and offer the best possible representation, consultation and advice. Every client is different, but when they visit our office, we see a need for them to be relaxed and comfortable. Our eclectic collection of memorabilia from the past centuries is enjoyable to most, but our state of the art business equipment allows a great degree of efficiency to assist in our client’s needs. My office offers expertise in probate practice, family law, real estate, civil law and personal injury. Fair Haven is a unique place and offers may goods and services. I am proud to work in this community, in the “Heart” of Fair Haven.
